Objectives

SWBAT identify the motion of molecules in the four States of Matter

Solids

1. Low amount Kinetic Energy

2. Little to no particle movement

3. Tightly packed particles

4. Have a definite shape and definite volume

5. Rigid, not very compressible

Liquids

1. Medium amount of Kinetic Energy

2. Moderate amount of particle movement

3. Tightly packed, but far enough apart to slide over one another.

4. Liquids have an indefinite shape and definite volume. (takes the shape of the container it is in)

Gases

1. High Kinetic Energy

2. A lot of particle movement

3. Particles are very far apart and move about freely.

4. Gases have an indefinite shape and indefinite volume.

4th state of matter? What happens when you raise the temperature to extreme levels….does it stay a gas forever?

Plasma

1. Very High Kinetic Energy

2. Plasma is different from a gas, because it is made up of groups of positively and negatively charged particles.

3. Like other gases has an indefinite shape and indefinite volume.

Examples?◦ Fluorescent bulbs

◦ Lightning

◦ The Sun

States of Matter Comic Strip

DIRECTIONS

Create a comic strip with a story where the maincharacter changes between the three states ofmatter (solid, liquid, gas) atleast once.

Teacher Example: Mr. Icicle begins as a solid, meltsinto a liquid puddle and evaporates into a gaseouscloud. (you cannot use this example)

You must include a title for your comic strip.

The story must make sense and there must beatleast one word in each frame. The words of thestory should indicate why the change of state ishappening. For example, the main character mightsay, “I’m melting because it is so warm in here!”

GRADING RUBRIC

Title

Main Character is a Solid

Main Character is a Gas

Main character is a Liquid

4 or more frames

Each frame has a quality illustration

Each frame has details

Each frame is completely colored

The story makes logical sense
