• Statement of Vision •Leaders in Serving
• Statement of Mission •The ministry of Landis Homes is to serve aging adults and their families by honoring and enriching their lives in a community of Christ-like love.
God is making all things new!
A few years ago after the opening of the new healthcare center, former Landis Homes president EdLongenecker referred to the change we were experiencing as a time of metamorphosis, similar to thetransformation of a caterpillar into a beautiful butterfly. This year’s annual report features thistransformation theme, recognizing that many of the changes of today are rooted in seeds planted overthe years.
In Revelations 21 John writes of a vision of a New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God.He then heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with them, and Godwill dwell with them, and they shall be God’s people. God will be with them and be their God.”
While this is a vision of a glorious future where there will be no more death, sorrow, or pain, God eventoday desires to make all things new, first in our relationship to God and others, and in the worldaround us. John records that God who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new. Write, for these words are true and faithful.”
How is God making all things new at Landis Homes? This report shares a few images and stories oftransformation from this past year. Each of us in the Landis Homes community as residents, clients, business partners, staff and board members are partners with God in this effort to make all things new, rooted in the assurance of God’s love for each one. This love motivates us to carry out our mission to honor and enrich the lives of aging adults and their families in a community of Christ-like love.
The magnitude of this team effort is also illustrated by the many persons, including many residents, who give of their time as volunteers and of their financial resources as donors. We also acknowledgemembers of the board, staff, auxiliary and congregations, as well as many business partners who alongwith volunteers and donors are the heart and soul and hands of our community of serving one another.
Included in this report are the financial statements, which after a number of years of recovery from thesignificant investment in transforming our healthcare and assisted living environment, reboundedfrom a prior-year loss to a healthy gain for the year. Your prayers and partnership together with othersin the Landis Homes community are appreciated as we seek God’s new future!

Towel & Basin Change HandsWest Bethany Chapel was filled with residents and visitors as LarryZook was installed as the third president of Landis Homes on January4. As part of the ceremony former president Ed Longenecker, picturedright above, presented Larry with a towel and basin, a symbol ofLandis Homes’ identity. Ed told those gathered he also was given thesesymbols when he was installed 30 years earlier.
In response Larry said, “I accept the towel and basin with a desire toalso serve and support the staff team and the entire Landis HomesCommunity. These symbols remind us of Jesus washing the disciples’feet, and his invitation to follow his example of serving one another inhumility, deference and love.”
Moderator of Lancaster Mennonite Conference Keith Weaver, who tookpart in the installation ceremony, said to Larry, “I call you to viewyour vocational calling as a calling of the church . . . The vocation ofthe church calls us to follow the Lord of the Church, Jesus Christ, whois the ultimate servant-leader of all time.”
Star Comforters Receive PANPHA AwardA group of volunteers from Landis Homes received statewiderecognition for their service to the residents of the retirementcommunity. The group that formed in April 2006 called StarComforters received the PANPHA award as Volunteer Group of theYear for 2007. PANPHA is an Association of Pennsylvania NonprofitSenior Services representing over 320 nonprofit providers.
The idea for the Star Comforter service arose at the suggestion of acertified nursing assistant who wanted to do more with residents inher care who are dying. According to the PANPHA DistinguishedService Award booklet, “the Landis Homes Star Comforters program, consisting of resident and staff volunteers especially screened andtrained to serve, affords terminally ill residents a calming andsupportive presence in their transition from life to death.”
The awards were presented in late June at the PANPHA AnnualConference in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Pictured at the conference are, left to right, resident Marie Cutman, and staff members Eva Bering, SueShirk, Don Good, Katie King and Ethel Caldwell representing the StarComforter program.

A Fish Story:Person Centered Care
George Biggs enjoyed fishing all of his life. Inlate summer of 2007, when he entered thehealthcare setting, George expressed hissadness at the possibility that he might notever be able to go fishing again. Severalhealthcare and maintenance staff teamed up toshare a late summer afternoon fishing trip toone of the Landis Homes ponds. George eveninvited his brother to join in the event. Thepicture says it all. “That experience meant somuch to George,” said his wife Doris. Georgetalked about it for the next few weeks, rightup until he passed away.

Volunteers who contributed 25 hours or more in 2006
A Fish Story:Person Centered Care
George Biggs enjoyed fishing all of his life. Inlate summer of 2007, when he entered thehealthcare setting, George expressed hissadness at the possibility that he might notever be able to go fishing again. Severalhealthcare and maintenance staff teamed up toshare a late summer afternoon fishing trip toone of the Landis Homes ponds. George eveninvited his brother to join in the event. Thepicture says it all. “That experience meant somuch to George,” said his wife Doris. Georgetalked about it for the next few weeks, rightup until he passed away.
Annual Fellowship Day & AuctionUsing the many hours served by hundreds of volunteers, such asSharise Gbur, pictured right above, and the fun of many people of allages enjoying a good day of food and fellowship, this annual eventturns it all into providing care for those in need.
