STATEMENT OF PURPOSE FOR CENTRE OF SCIENCE AND ENVIRONMENT
An environmental journalist like Mr. Anil Aggarwal can create such a prestigious
image on the international platform by documenting and analyzing the various
movements undertaken by other countries for saving Earth and bringing it to the notice
of the Indian government is a huge task. Hence our task is to make his dream a reality
and make India count as one of the major countries supporting the solutions to the
Global warming and the Greenhouse Effect. India is rich in all the natural resource and
plus beyond abundance sunshine.
The intention of proactively participating in the Boot Camp is to be in touch with
the latest up gradation of the engineering part of Eco-Friendly Architecture. The main
exercise is that whatever is presented, the strategy to inculcate in the Indian social
fabric for saving Mather Nature.
Since the Centre for Science and Environment systematically documents andalso hold workshops for the same, it will provide a good platform for all architects,
engineers, environmental journalist to come together and work and come up with the
solutions applicable at the grass root levels.
Architecture being an upbeat along with the concern about the Environment, the
focus will be how to make it palatable to the major part of the country that resides in the
rural areas. As a lot of the materials that are used for low energy consumption ends up
with expensive finishing materials, skilled labour to be employed, technical expertise
and detailed drawings to be drawn. To amalgamate the best of all yet make it cost
effective is what the Architecutural world all over the globe is struggling for.
Germany has broken their world record of solar PV production with 24 Giga
Watts produced at midday on July 21 2013.
We need to start taking concrete steps from the rural, urban, to cosmopolitan to
metropolitan cities, from a layman, skilled labour, engineers, architects, municipalities,
State to Central Government to reach our target of becoming the country with largest
production of renewable energy.
Earthen Architecture, for example has been practiced by the localities living in
the bhungas in Kutch and Saurashtra region. They create simple small hutments in thedessert region which can beat off the extreme climatic conditions of the dessert. All they
use is earth, thatch, locally available wood and cowdung. They do not have a formal
education of Architecture neither have referred Time Savers Standards. Yet their design
of the bhungas, their plinth height, sill level, lintel level along with the flooring and
projection of the eaves is so perfect that even at midday in mid May we can live
comfortably in these houses.

On the coastal region of Gujarat, Veraval, there are wind farms. In Maharashtra
recently the state government sanctioned the plantation of bamboo on a large scale.
Hence the efforts are there but they have to be concentrated and at each and every
level such people such be encouraged by the governing bodies by giving them
subsidies and good qualitative and free education to their children and other basic
infrastructure.
This is what we need to learn and inculcate in our society-the technological
advancement. We need to take concentrative and cumulative steps towards the saving
of Mother Nature. And is the whole purpose behind this Boot Camp.
