We see it every day, a call or a note or an email from someone asking how can I help. When our world came to a halt this spring, we received many special calls asking “How can I help?” We are humbled and honored by the overwhelming generosity of everyone who has reached out with supplies to help us support our essen al personnel, first responders, and communi es in need.
Ted Rossi and his family, through the generosity of the Rossi Family Founda on Trust, worked with CFMC to bring essen al face masks to our most vulnerable families and organiza ons.
Connec ng the dots … the Andy Schatz and Barbara Wolf Founda on joined several anonymous donors to provide face shields to our first responders.

Dear Friends,
The world has certainly changed since the end of 2019. It’s shi ed – morphed. 2020 is amazingly different and complex with many uncertain es. In a heartbeat, COVID‐19 stopped all of us in our tracks and changed everything in ways none of us could have foreseen. Thankfully YOU remain the constant in your steadfast commitment to our wonderful community and everyone in Middlesex County.
Whether you live “up‐county” or “down‐county,” you have demonstrated your love of – and concern for – where we live, work, and play. Your amazing “we’re in this together” and “can‐do” a tudes have expanded our capacity to do more, give more, and ‐ dare we say care more ‐ to support our friends and neighbors and the unique quality of life we treasure.
You have put your hearts and dollars to work to help others through the Community Founda on of Middlesex County. For that we are extremely grateful. YOU have demonstrated that generosity is more than dollars. It’s that phone call to an elderly neighbor or rela ve, that wave from across six feet, that smile (behind the mask, of course) to a complete stranger that communicates “I’m here for you.”
We know there are many challenges ahead and that we have a great deal of work to do. We also know that by working together the important, cri cal priori es will get done. At the Community Founda on, we commit to con nuing the dialogues that have begun to find meaningful, equitable solu ons for our future, so that all of our neighbors will have the chance to realize their full value and poten al.
We take pride in turning obstacles into opportuni es and with your help, we will make our towns and county even be er than they are now. We are “Great People Doing Great Things,” and together, we are moving forward for a brighter future. Thank you for your con nued support and partnership.
TOGETHER WE’VE GOT THIS.
Best Regards,
John L. Boccala e Deborah L. Moore Cynthia H. Clegg

PS. Our annual Report to the Community is later than we’d like. It also has a slightly different look than in past years. This report contains some of the usual pieces we are honored to share with you – such as our 2019 Financial Statement, the grants approved by our Board of Directors during 2019, our generous supporters and many Funds working on your behalf throughout Middlesex County. The Report also includes a 2020 snapshot of what you have made possible during this extraordinary me. You have come together through the Live Local Give Local Emergency Fund and Donor Advised and Field of Interest Funds to support our community in its me of need.
For your unwavering support and trust in working with and through the Community Founda on of Middlesex County, we are most grateful.
Thank You.

Making Great Things Possible CFMC Leadership Circle Community founda ons take me to build. The Founda on is well on its way with its endowed funds and known planned gi s. However, it needs opera ng support un l such me as its capital base can fully support its modest administra ve costs.
In 2006, a commi ed group of Community Founda on supporters ini ated a giving circle fund known as the President’s Society to support general opera ons. These generous donors make contribu ons of $1,000 or more annually to Opera ons in support of the work of the Community Founda on. A second Leadership level, the Chairman’s Circle was established with annual gi s to opera ons of $2,500 or more annually. Recently, in recogni on of several long‐ me CFMC supporters, a third level was established, the Community Benefactor. These generous donors make contribu ons of $5,000 or more annually to support our work in the community. In a difficult economy this support has allowed the Community Founda on to increase its much needed financial and other (Beyond the Grant) support to local nonprofits.

You, your neighbors, colleagues, and the commi ed grants commi ees con nued to respond to needs across our local communi es through donor advised funds, designated funds, and the compe ve grants cycle.
The Community Founda on offers a compe ve grant applica on cycle once a year. Nonprofit organiza ons may apply in one of several focus areas including:
Community Enrichment (Arts/Culture/History)
Community Health (Health/Medical/Hospital Care) Economic Security/Economic Opportunity Economic Development Educa on (Community Wide/Schools) Environment Public / Social Benefit (Civic Improvement/ Social Service) Recrea on Programs addressing animal welfare and services and animal/human
services; Programs serving women and girls; and Programs serving at‐risk boys and young men.
Grant applica ons are reviewed by eight (8) commi ees made up of diverse volunteers who care about our community. Grants are awarded to organiza ons that provide programs and projects to help individuals build be er lives; foster coopera ve approaches to community issues; serve as a catalyst for a rac ng other resources; and build and strengthen the infrastructure within an organiza on to help it be er meet its mission
In short, we look for organiza ons that will make a difference every day in our community.
Together we are addressing issues important to our community, crea ng opportuni es to bring young and old together, and discovering new ways to make our region the best place to live, work, and play. In the following pages, you will see how you – our donors and fund holders – made a tremendous impact in Middlesex County.

Raising Awareness Through Community Partnerships As you stroll along Harbor Park in Middletown, you will see a new addi on—a purple Buddy Bench.
Community Partnerships are at the core of all CFMC does, connec ng the dots among organiza ons, individuals, and businesses to raise awareness and make a posi ve impact in Middlesex County. Just such a “connec ng the dots” opportunity arose through the Big Thinkers Group, a community partnership focused on community outreach projects.
Gary Wallace, CFMC Board member and Community Health Center Director of Community Engagement & Rela ons was familiar with the CFMC Council of Business Partners Buddy Bench project through the Campaign for Bully‐Free Communi es. When approached by Officer Andrews Brooks of the Middletown Police Department with the idea of placing a bench in recogni on of vic ms of domes c violence during Na onal Domes c Violence Awareness month, Gary knew just how to help connect the dots!
Staff members of CFMC, Middletown Police Department, and Community Health Center joined clients at the Rushford Academy to paint a special bench for the presenta on and the bench was unveiled with guests from throughout the community, including Mayor Ben Florsheim, Senator Ma Lesser, Representa ve Q Phipps, and David Director, Marc Levin, Riz Rizzo, and Liz Shulman of the CFMC Council of Business Partners.
The dedica on plaque expresses our community’s commitment to End the Silence:
Given in Recogni on of Vic ms of Domes c Violence. End The Silence. Donated by the Community Founda on County’s Council of Business Partners Fund, in partnership with Rushford Academy,
Community Health Center New Horizons Domes c Violence Shelter, and the Middletown Police Department

Live Local Give Local Emergency Fund What’s the most amazing thing about Middlesex County?
In mes of need—of great need—you reach out and ask "How Can I Help?"
These are "interes ng" mes, indeed, and our nonprofits whose work puts them on the frontline to meet the most cri cal needs of our neighbors, needed our help. You joined together and put your hearts and dollars to work for the benefit of all in Middlesex County.
We know that when friends and neighbors join together to help each other, we will succeed. You proved this when you supported the Live Local Give Local Emergency Fund to help our local nonprofits this year.
We are extremely grateful to Guilford Savings Bank and Pra & Whitney for leading the charge to ensure our nonprofit organiza ons and essen al personnel had the tools and resources to meet the ever‐changing issues of the COVID‐19 pandemic. So many stepped forward to answer the call—Thank You!

Nonprofit organiza ons rely on the support of the community to address the issues and meet the needs of our neighbors, now and in the future. When you establish a Designated Fund for your favorite nonprofit organiza on, you ensure its growth and service to the community for years to come. Designated Funds also support educa onal awards for our region’s school dis‐tricts, providing opportuni es to support the next genera on to pursue their dreams – and help make our community strong‐er. Project Funds support short‐term ini a ves with a beginning, middle, and end.

You met the soaring demand to provide meals for seniors with Meals on Wheels through the Estuary Council of Seniors.
You also provided food and supplies for your neighbors and friends through the Shoreline Soup Kitchens and Pantries, Tri‐Town Youth Services in Chester, Deep River and Essex, the Town of Durham Neighbors in Need, HK Backpack Program, and St. Vincent dePaul Place and Amazing Grace Food Pantry.
You purchased tablets to support youth educa on virtual programming for neuro‐diverse students at Futures, Inc. and virtual programming and support services for clients of Vista Life Innova ons.

And, so much more. Others joined you in making a difference in our community. Thanks to a generous Donor Advised Fund at CFMC, we helped launch weekend “grab and go” meals for students and their families and partnered to provide fresh greens each week through the Middletown Public School meal sites.

Going the Distance Beyond the Grant CFMC Nonprofit Resource Center
We understand that nonprofits o en need more than a grant to accomplish their missions. Nonprofit organiza ons need access to knowledge: resources, experts and leaders in governance, financial management, marke ng and communica ons, and development. CFMC’s Nonprofit Resource Center brings leaders and experts to the table to work with our local organiza ons. These experts offer their me and knowledge at our Morning Musings workshops and our Nonprofit Networking series.
We are grateful for the tremendous support Guilford Savings Bank provides in bringing na onally‐recognized speakers to our area to work with boards of directors, volunteers, and staff on important governance and development topics. We are pleased to work with local knowledge experts who provide access to resources, advice, guidance, and essen al professional development opportuni es. Tom Gezo (a.k.a “The Doctor is In”) provides free, one‐on‐one advisory services to local nonprofits on a broad array of topics, including board development, fundraising, organiza onal management, and strategic planning. Harvest Development Group is an integral part of the resource team developing workshops concepts and execu ve leadership learning opportuni es on a wide range of professional development topics to help nonprofit organiza ons strategically grow their resources and serve their communi es.
With the onset of the COVID‐19 Pandemic, CFMC has worked with our nonprofit partners to be er understand and address the issues and needs they see in the community. We have found new “virtual” ways to reach out to partners and individuals and con nue important conversa ons, including
Offered a nonprofit survey, developed by Tom Gezo, to iden fy issues and needs in our communi es related to the COVID‐19 Pandemic;
Facilitated virtual listening forums to share ideas and learn from our nonprofit community;
Assisted members of the Middletown Police Department (MPD), St. Vincent de Paul, Middlesex United Way, Middlesex Community College, and Community Health Center launch a “Big Thinkers” group to discuss community outreach ini a ves for MPD;
Par cipated in a variety of coali ons and working groups throughout Middlesex County addressing a wide array of community needs, including employment opportuni es and access to basic needs.

Just look at what you have made possible:
You supported daily childcare programs for children of essen al personnel and first responders at YMCA of Northern Middlesex County and Kids of Chatham Organiza on.
You provided supplies and Personal Protec on Equipment (PPE) for not only our first responders and essen al workers, but also for health and human service organiza ons such as the Coali on on Housing and Homelessness, Columbus House, Gilead Community Services, and MARC Community Resources.
You helped provide underserved communi es with wellness packages offering informa on on disease preven on and wellness that have been distributed throughout the Community through Cross Street Training & Academic Center and Bare Neccessi es..
You helped women and families on the shoreline access essen al counseling and support services during the shelter in place order through referral programs at the Women & Family Life Center.
And, so much more. Others joined you in making a difference in our community. Thanks to a generous Donor Advised Fund at CFMC, we helped launch weekend “grab and go” meals for students and their families and partnered to provide fresh greens each week through the Middletown Public School meal sites.
Thank you is not sufficient ‐‐‐ but THANK YOU!

Grant Making is a Team Effort
Grant making occurs all year long. Your generosity and your passion impact the community with every gi you make and every grant you recommend. In FY2019, thanks to you, grants totaling $805,825 were approved by the CFMC Board of Directors to support our community.

Thank You.
