Mr. Michael T. Abraham, Executive Director Theta Tau Professional Engineering Fraternity 1011 San Jacinto, Suite 205 Austin, TX 78701 Dear Brothers, It is an honor to present to you our colony’s petition for chapter status on behalf of my Brothers. Since the early meetings of our small interest group at SUNY Stony Brook University, we have grown in membership and influence. Our Brothers have dedicated time and heart in building an organization whose members embody the ideals of Theta Tau and strive towards continuously improving and fostering professionalism and personal growth within the Stony Brook community. Sigma Beta Theta Tau began in Fall 2012. Our Founders sought to create a close-knit community among engineering disciplines that did not discriminate against gender, race, religion, or personal beliefs. Through research, we discovered and were inspired by the ideals Theta Tau held regarding professionalism, service, and brotherhood. Since our colony’s installation on March 23rd, 2013, our Brothers have grown as professionals, as individuals, and as leaders for others to follow. We strive continuously to not only improve our colony’s operations and bequeathing of our collective knowledge and resources, but also to make a more meaningful impact on each other, other organizations, and the Stony Brook community.

Our progression as a colony has been arduous but inspiring, thanks to the continuous guidance and support we have received from surrounding colonies, chapters, and nationals. Our collaborations with professional and cultural organizations on campus have helped grow our professionalism and shape our internal and external operations. Our involvement with nearby clean-ups, Habitat for Humanity, and exposing young students to the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields has greatly shaped the service our colony has had on the Stony Brook community. Our attendance to Regional Conferences, National Conferences, Spring Break Habitat for Humanity, nearby chapter visits, and hosting visits from nearby chapters and colonies has greatly strengthened our brotherhood and development of our colony. Our interactions with other colonies and chapters have been eye-opening. Seeing their operations and their progression at their respective universities has motivated us to achieve chapter status within Theta Tau.

As a member of Alpha Class, I have witnessed the Brothers of this colony grow and surpass ambitions and goals they have set for themselves and for this colony. Our colony has experienced successes that have increased our presence on campus and has remained resolute in the face of challenges and struggles. Such experiences have allowed us to emerge as an organization stronger than ever with driven members dedicated to each other, to the community, and to Theta Tau. Once we are granted chapter status, I am confident that our Brothers will continue to improve and maintain Theta Tau as the leading professional engineering fraternity.

Sincerely, Edward Qiu Regent SUNY - Stony Brook University, Stony Brook Colony of Theta Tau

History of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS)

The State University of New York at Stony Brook’s College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS) was founded in 1960. It is home to nine academic departments: Applied Mathematics and Statistics, Biomedical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Technology and Society. In addition, to further promote quality education, CEAS is also home to the Electrical Engineering Online Degree and the Women in Science and Engineering Program.

Mission and Approach

The mission of CEAS is to provide comprehensive high quality undergraduate education and research opportunities for graduate students and practicing professionals, to provide leading edge research programs that probe the frontiers of knowledge and contribute to the development of globally competitive economies, both regionally and nationally and to provide technology transfer that promotes industrial development, with particular emphasis on the needs of Long Island industry. Alongside working towards its mission, CEAS aims to provide students with a solid foundation that prepares them to adapt successfully throughout their careers as technology advances. Hands-on laboratory courses, the undergraduate internship program, and the senior design project provide practical experience in engineering that complements theoretical training.

Today, nearly a quarter of the total student population at Stony Brook is enrolled in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. The departments with the largest number of students are the Departments of Applied Mathematics and Statistics and Computer Science. Recently, the backbone of the College are its 160 faculty engineers, researchers and applied scientists.

Centers & Institutes

CEAS has an active support staff that is heavily involved in the recruitment of prospective freshman and transfer students, college-wide events, student organizations, and they administer the unique CEAS-specific scholarship and tutoring programs. They also work closely with the Career Center and industry leaders to assist students with finding internship and job opportunities.

The College of Engineering and Applied Sciences offers a wide range of programs that provide students with opportunities to find work in industry or proceed to graduate study in a variety of fields. Seven programs lead to the degree of Bachelor of Engineering: Biomedical Engineering, Chemical and Molecular Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Science, and Mechanical Engineering. Programs of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences that are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission and the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org are so identified under the individual program descriptions. The engineering degree programs place a strong emphasis on capstone design experience and research projects in the junior and senior years. Students are also encouraged to work closely with members of the faculty on research projects of interest to them. Four programs lead to the Bachelor of Science degree: Applied Mathematics and

Statistics, Computer Science, Information Systems, and Technological Systems Management. These programs emphasize applications of analytical and computing techniques to a wide variety of technical and societal problems as well as the design, operation, and management of computer systems and environments. All of the College's programs give the student latitude to plan a course of study within traditional engineering disciplines or in new interdisciplinary fields.

The College is ABET Accredited and aims to provide students with a solid foundation that prepares them to adapt successfully throughout their careers to advances in technology. Hands-on laboratory courses, the undergraduate internship program, and the senior design project provide practical experience in engineering that complements theoretical training. Affiliated with the College of Engineering are Stony Brook's Center of Excellence in Wireless & Information Technology (CEWIT) and Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). CEWIT’s new building was opened in March 2009 and over the past four years worked hard to build strategic alliances and business partnerships among the academic, scientific, and business communities. With over 70 associated faculty members, 190 PhD and 180 Master students, it is a next generation research and educational facility. The Center's research areas are diverse and cover distributed robotics, expressive and hybrid networks, mobile computing, wireless networks, cyber security, computer vision and image processing, RF systems, microwave sensors, wireless sensor networks, computational genetics and protein docking, computational neurobiology, virtual reality, effective bandwidth utilization, wireless protocols, wireless ad hoc networks and wireless gateways. Brookhaven National Laboratory was founded in 1947 and became partners with Stony Brook University in 1998 when SBU began managing the Laboratory for the Department of Energy. It is located less than 20 miles from campus and is a multipurpose research laboratory housing large, state-of-the-art facilities such as the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider laboratory, the National Synchrotron Light Source research facility, and the Center for Functional Nanomaterials. Just in 2012 the University and BNL collaborated on the Joint Photon Science Institute, the Center for Extended Lifetime Energy Storage Technologies (CELESTe), the Center for Accelerator Science & Education (CASE), the Institute for Advanced Computational Science and the Center for Scientific Computing, the NY State High-performance Computing Consortium, the Smarter Grid Research, Innovation, Development, Demonstration & Deployment (SGRID3) initiative, and the Consortium for Innovative Global Water and Energy Solutions (CIGWES). In the spring of 2012, SUNY Korea opened its doors in Incheon, South Korea. SUNY Korea, located in the Incheon Free Economic Zone (IFEZ), is the first Korean campus managed by a US University offering US degree programs and the first global university in IFEZ. SUNY Korea is committed to providing high quality research-oriented education while providing the full American university experience in Korea. The curriculum at SUNY Korea consists of selected engineering degree programs of Stony Brook. The design and delivery of each program agrees with the degree program as delivered in the US and the degree is granted from Stony Brook University.

History of Prospective Chapter

Sigma Beta Theta Tau began in the Fall of 2012. Ali Islam and Anna Wu both wanted to create a close-knit community among the engineering disciplines that did not discriminate against the gender of a person. Through research it was soon realized that Theta Tau would be the best way to bond the people within the engineering community in Stony Brook University.

The Central Office of Theta Tau was soon contacted and a small interest group was formed. The group was then presented with a small PowerPoint presentation by Mr. Abraham, and shown the values of Theta Tau. After the informative presentation, the first steps were taken in colonizing Stony Brook University when The Sigma Beta Theta Tau Engineering Organization was formed. The organization with Ali as president and Anna as vice president, elected its first round of officers during the Fall 2012 semester.

The following week, The Sigma Beta Theta Tau Engineering Organization held its first general meeting. Since then, The Sigma Beta Theta Tau Engineers have had weekly meetings and collaborations with other organizations in Stony Brook University to better know the community, in addition to organizing community service with organizations in Stony Brook, study days for members to help one another with schoolwork, and gym days to keep everyone in shape. Through various meetings and activities, the officers and the members soon became close friends all while benefiting the community.

On March 23rd, 2013, the Stony Brook University Colony of Theta Tau was installed with 12 Founding members and Dr. David Westerfeld as their adviser. The Founding Class would try to help Theta Tau at Stony Brook University become a chapter as soon as possible. Semester by semester, the colony achieved its foundational goals quickly with the combined efforts of its Founders.

In the Fall 2013 semester, Theta Tau at Stony Brook enjoyed its first Rush period, and nine new members were initiated into the fraternity as the Alpha Class. Having learned the core values of Theta Tau, several newly-crossed Brothers of the Alpha Class were appointed chair positions shortly after crossing, with the majority of the class going on to become Executive Board Officers within the colony in following semesters. Events were held in collaboration with professionals from companies such as GE and Morgan Stanley during this time, as well.

The Spring 2014 semester came around, and although inclement weather affected attendance at Rush events, four strongly-bonded prospects later crossed as the Beta Class, all of whom would eventually become New Member Educators. The Pledge curriculum during this time was adjusted to conform to a smaller class, and improvements were implemented after learning from the previous semester. Spring marked the first time that Brothers of Theta Tau at Stony Brook participated in Habitat for Humanity Spring Break, along with Service events like volunteering for Habitat for Humanity NYC and cleaning up the local Fire Island. Over Spring 2014, the colony hosted the first occurrences of what would become its two most prominent Professional events on-campus, the Demystifying Series and Steel Toes and Stilettos – the former being an invitational to

professionals from various engineering disciplines to come to Stony Brook University and speak about their personal experiences, with the latter being a women’s engineering panel held in order to advocate female presence in the engineering profession. The colony’s members also listened to speakers at the Green Energy Startup Panel and received a tour of CEWIT. At the semester’s end, the remaining members congratulated the colony’s first batch of graduating Brothers.

During the Fall 2014 semester, Theta Tau at Stony Brook experienced a sizeable Rush again, the same of which could be said for its initiated Gamma Class, comprised of eight members. The Gamma Class was notable for its activity across the different facets of on-campus extracurricular activity, including SUNY Korea, honor societies, and religious organizations, helping the colony improve its relationships with other clubs. Additionally, the Pledge curriculum was more akin to that of the Alpha Class, due to a similar class size. Collaboration with other organizations at Stony Brook was stronger than ever at this time, with a plethora of technical societies adding onto the Demystifying Series and other workshops, and the colony’s members acting as emcees for Trivia Night and Bingo for Breast Cancer. The colony also formed an intramural basketball team during this time.

At the beginning of the Spring 2015 semester, Theta Tau at Stony Brook University joined the campus’ Professional Greek Council (PGC) and had yet another successful Rush, with 12 Pledges carefully chosen and all 12 Pledges crossing thereafter as the Delta Class. This class was the largest since the Founding Class and marked the colony’s first time initiating multiple first-year students, who brought a number of new ideas to the fraternity. Tried and true Professional events such as Steel Toes and the Corporate Networking Mixer were held, alongside the new Dress to Impress Rush contest. Meanwhile, numerous Service events included the likes of volunteering at Girl Scouts STEM Day, helping out at Ride for Life, and cleaning up the Long Island Railroad. Two members made the trip to Florida for another Habitat for Humanity Spring Break, as well.

The Fall 2015 semester’s Rush was greatly propelled by the colony’s social media campaign, and seven new members went on to be initiated as the Epsilon Class, a group of energetic, complementary personalities. Professional collaboration continued in the form of Steel Toes and Pre-Conference and resume workshops, establishing a connection with the recently-founded ASME at Stony Brook. More internal workshops were conducted by the Brothers themselves to sharpen each other’s technical skills, too. Following this trend, more internal hangout events, like bowling, ice skating, and game and movie nights, furthered brotherhood between the colony’s members. In addition, alumni were invited back for the Founders Day Barbecue. Service to the community continued, too, as members lent their hands at a multitude of Service events hosted by other organizations on-campus, including Circle K Service Day and the PGC Penny Wars, fostering good relations in this department, as well. Finally, over Fall 2015, Theta Tau at Stony Brook attended the NERC, visited the Nu Gamma Chapter, and spent time with the NYU Colony, along with hosting mixers with other professional Greek organizations at its designated house.

Today, Theta Tau at Stony Brook University offers its members professional development experiences and contacts with alumni who are professional engineers – opportunities not available to most undergraduates. Many of its members are current/former Executive Board officers of other technical societies. The colony carefully follows a program in the selection and development of its members that stresses the importance of high professional activity and social compatibility, provides a framework for group participation in campus, community, engineering, and fraternity affairs, offers recreation, and promotes lasting friendship – a lifetime of brotherhood in an engineering environment. As such, the colony’s members have created engineering projects like a POV display, motorized car, and an LED clock and table. At Stony Brook University, Theta Tau hosts a variety of Professional events such as networking events and resume workshops. Outside of Professional events, the colony also actively participates in community service, the most prominent of which is volunteering for Habitat for Humanity events, in which its members help build homes for those in need.

Theta Tau – Nu Gamma Chapter February 27th, 2016

Page  1  of  1

Dear Brothers, It is with great pleasure that I recommend chapter status be granted to the Sigma Beta Stony Brook University Colony of Theta Tau. As the current Regent of the Nu Gamma chapter at Binghamton University, I have personally been able to become acquainted with the Stony Brook Colony over the past year through a Halloween meet-up at our chapter, the 2015 Northeast Regionals at Tau Chapter, and also the Northeast Regional SASE conference at Northeastern University as well as keeping in touch over email. I feel as though these young men and women exemplify the values of Theta Tau and I would love to call them my brothers. After perusing through the Sigma Beta petition for chapter status, it became clear to me that the Stony Brook Colony of Theta Tau has spent the past 2 years developing their professional development, brotherhood, and philanthropic aspects of their colony. It is apparent that the colony takes their professionalism seriously through the amount, quality, and colony participation in professional development events. The colony hosts many events geared towards fostering a successful professional career in internships and post-graduation careers through resume workshops, mock interviews, company panels, etc. The proof is in the graduating members’ careers. Many of the graduating members of Sigma Beta Colony have already went on to lead successful careers, representing Theta Tau in more professional environments for engineers. This colony exemplifies the development and maintenance of a high standard of professional interest among their members. Brotherhood and Philanthropy are just as important in a successful chapter of Theta Tau in my opinion. The Sigma Beta colony has united themselves in a strong bond of fraternal fellowship, but have also made a considerable effort reaching out to other chapters in the Northeast to acquaint themselves with brothers all over. Philanthropy is also an important aspect as it is the only aspect of a Theta Tau chapter or colony where Theta Tau can better their community and others rather than ourselves. The Stony Brook University Colony is a benefit to their community which is a great quality of a Theta Tau Chapter. As a professional fraternity, we must better our community as well as ourselves and not be a detriment to society. As someone who grew up on Long Island and still has a permanent address 15 minutes from Stony Brook University, I think I can speak for all Long Island brothers when I say it would be great to have a local chapter to visit. I have no doubt that the members of this colony will continue to grow our fraternity of Theta Tau in a positive manner and bring honor to our profession as engineers, meaningful bonds to our brotherhood, and also benefit their community. I recommend chapter status be granted to the Sigma Beta Colony at Stony Brook University of Theta Tau as they have proven themselves to represent the values of Theta Tau and will continue to foster these values to benefit out professional fraternity as a whole. In H & T, Adam J. Weiner

THETA TAU OFFICE OF THE REGIONAL DIRECTOR

PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERING FRATERNITY Northeast Regional Director

February 13, 2016

Brothers,

I am pleased to support this petition for chapter status of The Colony of Theta Tau at

Stony Brook University. I’ve meet the members of the colony most recently, during a visit in

March of 2015.

During my last visit I have gotten a good sense of the strengths of the members of the

colony. They have excelled in developing a group that embodies the three pillars of Theta Tau.

This group has set up and participated in a number of service and professional events. The

Colony is doing well, they have been going steady for the past few years with their numbers

being relatively consistent. Everything about them reflects a chapter, from the way they interact

with each other to the quality of events they have.

As for Brotherhood, they are a tight knit group all focused on the same goal. In my

interactions with them, this group works very well together and have been able to instill the same

ideas in their newest members. I believe they have built a strong foundation for a long and

prosperous existence as a chapter of our great fraternity.

Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns.

In H&T,

Joseph P. Reill

Northeast Regional Director
