Dear Friends,

On behalf of the Board, staff, and volunteers of the State Theatre, it is our pleasure to present the 2014-2015 Report to the Community.

This year’s report provides a perspective on the breadth of State Theatre efforts from mainstage performances such as Harry Connick, Jr. and Crosby, Stills & Nash to world-class Performances for Schools to beautiful and heartfelt poetry by our artist-in-residence Glenis Redmond, and beyond.

Last season, State Theatre offered 201 performances; reached nearly 27,000 students and teachers; hosted artists from around the world including Russia, China, and Argentina; and in 2014 ranked #1 in New Jersey for paid attendance for the 3rd year in a row by Pollstar Magazine. It was a season packed with excitement and great success.

Many have given generously to the State Theatre to support our programs and for that I extend my deepest gratitude; it is through your support that State Theatre’s successes have been made possible.

There is no doubt that the State Theatre has made a major contribution to the city of New Brunswick, Middlesex County, and central New Jersey. I am tremendously proud to be a part of this remarkable organization as we make plans for the future. Thank you for joining us this season.

Sincerely,

Thomas J. CartoPresident & CEO

Letter from thePresident & CEO

Dear Friends,

We are pleased to present the State Theatre New Jersey Report to the Community for the 2014-2015 season. The season saw continued strong attendance for our programming, additional educational offerings, and the appointment of Tom Carto, our new President and CEO.

I would like to personally thank Warren R. Zimmerman for his leadership during this year of transition. As past Chairman of the Board of the Trustees stepping into the Interim CEO position, Warren kept the ship on course and we didn’t miss a beat. We appreciate his dedication and commitment.

A major highlight this season was the State Theatre’s Gala event. We celebrated our 27th Annual Gala in May with a featured performance by Brian Wilson, co-founder of the Beach Boys, and raised a record-breaking $803,000.

As the new Chair of the Board of Trustees, I pledge to continue to foster the commitment to excellence represented by the 2014-2015 season. We value our role as a prominent member of New Jersey’s cultural community and look forward to even more partnerships and collaborations in the future.

The tremendous work of the State Theatre is only possible through the generous contributions of our donors, grantors, and sponsors. This support enables us to honor our mission and serve our community as a major performing arts center. On behalf of the Board of the State Theatre, I would like to sincerely thank the individuals, corporations, foundations, and government entities that continue to support us, our mission, and our vision.

Regards,

Douglas M. Garback, Sr.Chairman of the Board of Trustees

Season Highlights

It was an exciting record-breaking season at the State Theatre. Ticket revenue reached $6.48 million, our annual Gala raised the most money in the theater’s history, we balanced our budget for the sixth year in a row, and our Education programs were as strong as ever.

Sold-out concerts, top-notch stand-up comedy, big Broadway national tours, amazing Performances for Schools, heart-warming storytelling for kids, State Theatre premieres, a two-show New Year’s Eve to remember, and so much more made the 2014-2015 season one of the most exciting to date.

Contributing to these memorable experiences, this season saw the installation of a new state-of-the-art L-ACOUSTICS sound system. The new system was installed in mid-October of 2014 and was introduced in November with a performance by The Fab Faux to rave reviews.

Whether we were Singin’ in the Rain with Gene Kelly on screen as the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra performed live, or writing poetry with Artist-in-Residence Glenis Redmond, the State Theatre played an indispensable role in cultivating and presenting vital arts to the community. Upholding our mission of providing a major performing arts venue in central New Jersey, we continue to encourage patrons to have a life-long association with the performing arts.

Education & Outreach

In 2014-2015, the State Theatre’s education and outreach programs served nearly 27,000 people throughout New Jersey. Performances, artist residencies, workshops, lectures, our Family Day Festival, and other activities provided opportunities for people of all ages, backgrounds, and socioeconomic conditions to engage in a meaningful way with the performing arts. As part of the State Theatre’s commitment to making the arts accessible to everyone, all of our education initiatives were offered free of charge or at a steeply discounted cost.

All told, the State Theatre gave to the community nearly $650,000 in free and subsidized programs.

Performances for SchoolsNearly 13,000 students at 217 schools in 17 counties in New Jersey and New York attended the State Theatre’s 2014-2015 Performances for Schools, featuring world-class musicians, dancers, actors, and acrobats from across the globe. For many children, this was their very fi rst experience with live performing arts. For teachers, the performances created rich learning opportunities, with direct connections to school curriculum across a variety of subject areas.

Page 7: State Theatre Report to the Community 2014-2015

7

Community ResidenciesNo State Theatre education initiative makes a deeper impact than our community residencies, which engage people—particularly disadvantaged and underserved children and adults—directly with professional artists. In 2014-2015, the State Theatre presented two artist residencies with participants from 44 school and community partner organizations. The innovative percussion ensemble Scrap Arts Music led hands-on workshops exploring the world of sound on their extraordinary, one-of-a-kind instruments. Poet Glenis Redmond returned to the State Theatre for her seventh year as artist-in-residence, nurturing and inspiring students, senior citizens, adults in recovery, and others to create their own deeply personal poems.

New Brunswick Community OutreachThe State Theatre’s New Brunswick Community Outreach initiative was created especially for children and families in our local, predominantly Hispanic community. In partnership with school, parent, municipal, and community organizations, the State Theatre presented four bilingual storytelling, music, and theater performances that drew approximately 650 people—most of whom were attending a State Theatre event for the very fi rst time. The performances were free of charge to the public.

State Theatre Family DayThe State Theatre’s Family Day Festival, held each year on Presidents Day, is a much-anticipated event. Spanning multiple venues (State Theatre, George Street Playhouse, Crossroads Theatre, and the United Methodist Church), Family Day features performances, workshops, face painting, balloon animals, games, costumed characters, and more—almost all of it free of charge. At Family Day 2015, over 6,000 children and their families braved freezing weather to spend a fun, action-packed day at the theater.

Milk & CookiesDuring the 2014-2015 season, close to 1,500 people attended Milk & Cookies, the State Theatre’s wildly popular storytelling and music program. With 12 performances spread over six Saturdays, the free series introduced very young children to live performing arts, with entertaining, interactive shows—followed by free milk and cookies! The performances took place in the comfy confi nes of the theater’s Heldrich Room, creating a friendly, intimate space for this young audience.

Pre-Performance InsightsThe State Theatre presented 24 Pre-Performance Insights lectures in 2014-2015, attended by over 400 patrons. Offered for all symphony, ballet, and musical theater events, Insights explored the art form, the work, the artists, and creators, enhancing the audience’s understanding, appreciation, and enjoyment of the show.

Symphony ScholarsIn 2014-2015, the State Theatre introduced Symphony Scholars, an in-depth exploration of classical music for music students at New Brunswick Middle School. The program gave these budding musicians a thrilling opportunity to experience live classical music by a world-class orchestra. The students attended the State Theatre performance by the BBC Concert Orchestra, and met the conductor and soloist after the show. Pre-concert preparation included introductory workshops, study guides, and CD recordings for each student. A follow-up workshop gave students an opportunity to refl ect on the experience.
