UPCOMING EVENTS

Zoe Fleming and Claire McGuirk won’t be changing too much up in the lead-up to rep-resenting ACT/NSW Country at the national championships early next year.

The two young cricketers continue to make a name for themselves in the women’s game with their selection on the back of their perfor-mances for Central North – a fortnight ago – at the Country Championships.

McGuirk will play in the under 15 side at Canberra in February while Fleming will be in the under 18 team at Ballarat and Bendigo in January.

They both plan to play and train as they nor-mally would in the lead-up.

“Pretty excited,” the girls – who both play in Sydney and Newcastle on weekends – said of the impending championships.

Fleming added: “[We’ll] just keep training and stuff.”

It is the first time either girl has been selected for ACT/NSW Country.

McGuirk gained selection after being the

second top run-scorer for Central North along with taking four wickets.

In almost every game she played an integral role.

In the opener she scored 28 not out and then against Newcastle she chimed in with 3-17.

She top-scored with 27 in the final where Central North went down to ACT Southern Districts.

Fleming didn’t get as much time to put her case forward for selection.

With rain affecting the tournament, Fleming took her sole opportunity to impress with both hands. She top-scored for Central North with 35 retired not out before claiming 2-9 from two overs.

In total, seven Central North players have been selected in the extended squads for the two ACT/NSW Country sides.

The nationals are sure to test the two Gunnedah girls and Fleming will play alongside – as well as against – players contracted to Women’s Big Bash League clubs. www.nvi.com.au

YEAR 12 OFFICIALLY FAREWELLED

At the end of Term 3 we farewelled our Year 12 students with a special assembly.

The assembly was filled with emo-tional speeches, an amusing slideshow, the final roll call and balloons released by Year 12 students.

Year 12 also conceded defeat in the Ring of Honour battle against staff.

Thank you to all of the family, friends and community members who were able to attend.

Gunnedah High School have secured a member of the Family Referral Service (FRS) to work on-site at school for three days during Term 4.

The FRS brings together families, support services and community resources so that children and young people are safe and well.

The FRS work with all services to find out what best supports young people and families and their children, and what can be done to improve community resources.

If you are a young person or family with children, or an extended family member, FRS will listen to your needs and refer you to the right service.

This service can provide advice on the agencies that could benefit your child’s development as well as assis-tance in making appointments and/or writing and submitting referrals for your child.

This is a fantastic opportu-nity for parents to gain knowl-

WHAT'S YOUR HEALTH STORY?

You're invited to take part in the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Survey (NATSIHS). Interviewers from the Aus-tralian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) are now knocking on doors in your area, so make your story heard.

The NATSIHS collects information about the health status of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

We will ask you a range of questions face-to-face about your health and life-style, such as:

• visits to doctors, nurses or Aboriginal health work-ers

• health conditions• medications• smoking• exercise• what you eat and drinkYou will have the oppor-

tunity to take part in a voluntary hearing test and have some physical measurements taken, if you agree (height, weight, waist and blood pressure).

For general enquiries, visit the ABS website at www.abs.gov.au/surveyinfo

the Family Referral Service, please contact her on 1800 597 589 or call the GHS Front Office on 6742 0155 for more information.

Students Lucy Moore, Nicola Bemet and Ashleigh Mills recently helped with the Kadina Apex Club Hay Run distribution.

In just over an hour 80 bales of hay, $5600 in gift cards, 1.4 tonnes of dog food and 50 care packages – a grand total of $16,000 worth of goods – was distributed to struggling farmers.

There were a lot of smiles, lots of tears and endless thanks from Gunnedah's farm-ing community.

The three Gunnedah High students have a strong inter-est in helping farmers. They recently raised $1150 with their 'Dress Like a Farmer' day and 'Kiss a Cow' competition.

2018 UPPER HUNTER BEEF BONANZA

Despite the drought the Upper Hunter Beef Bonanza (UHBB) was as big as ever with nearly 900 students compet-ing.

Gunnedah High School took five steers in partnership with Panorama Farms ( two Charolais Cross Speckle Park, two Angus and one Speckle Park cross).

While we did not place on the hoof I am quite excited about how these steers will do in the Carcase compe-tition component of UHBB. Results for this section will be released on Saturday.

12 students from Years 10, 11 and 12 accompanied Mr Tydd, Miss Dunning (prac teacher from UNE) and Mrs Dwyer.

Ashleigh Mills placed 1st in her heat of the paraders competition and made it into the 17/18 years finals. Kurt Rennick placed 4th in his heat of the 16 years. With 15 students in each heat, this was quiet and accomplishment.

A huge thank you to Mr Phillip Tydd (GHS farm assistant) for all the preparation it takes to get our steers to this competition and for giving up his weekend to attend.

Also thank you to Mrs Sharon Tydd for the photos, Mr David Pease and Mr Ken Moore for all their help over the weekend and to Mr and Mrs Rennick for helping to get the gear back to GHS.– Nicole Dwyer

HAVE YOUR SAY ON DIABETES IN SCHOOLS

Diabetes Australia is currently in consultation to develop a national program to better support kids with type 1 diabetes in schools.

The new nationally con-sistent training program for teachers and school staff will be targeted at every school with a student with type 1 diabetes and this will cover the safe administra-tion of insulin, hypoglycemia (low blood glucose level) management, and ‘normal-ising’ diabetes in schools so the students are not stigmatised.

The program will also clarify the legal framework for diabetes management in schools and resolve any confusion over who can train school staff.

To ensure the new pro-gram meets the needs of schools, students and par-ents we want to hear from you about what works and what needs to be improved.

Register to attend one of our information sessions using the link https://pwc.to/2OIetTr.

If you can’t attend a work-shop, please take five min-utes to complete a parent or school survey.

If you have any questions please visit www.diabete-saustralia.com.au

For eight years of his life, Luke was an obese alcoholic and drug addicted thug. Leading a violent street fighting crew, he was stabbed on two separate occasions; once in the lung, the other time in the head.

On the outside he looked strong and confident, on the inside his thoughts would come to haunt him. He was incredibly scared, depressed, anxious, and awkward in social situations. Luke always worried what other people thought about him which led to him committing some harsh acts and missing out on many positive opportunities.

He opens up the audience’s eyes, and mind, to their ego – to the labels that we battle to live up to,

and relates his story back to some of the masks the audience would be wearing.

He then shows how these labels, and worrying what other people think, is ruining our relationships, following through on ideas (it could

be as simple as not making those crucial sales calls, or not putting your hand up in class), happiness, and success in every area of life. Becoming aware of ones ego and labels, is the first step towards releasing it.

Hudson and Logan Dries recently trav-elled and played tennis in the USA.

The boys were away for a month and during that time they played five tourna-ments, amidst the training days on the tennis courts where they stayed.

Hudson won the La Harbra Junior Open Boys 18s doubles. Logan was runner-up in the Tuskin Junior Open and was also runner-up in the Anaheim Tennis Centre Boys 16s doubles.

The trip was not all tennis, they also enjoyed sightseeing at Disneyland, Cali-fornia Adventures, Seaworld, Knottsberry Farm, Universal Studios and a Hollywood tour.

It was such a great opportunity for these junior north-west and Gunnedah High School tennis players.

Hudson and Logan are pictured with tennis players from New Zealand.

CHRISTMASCHARITY GOLF & FAMILY FUN DAY

SUNDAY, 9 DECEMBER 2018GUNNEDAH GOLF CLUB

4 Person Ambrose + 4 Ball Par +Supreme Team Challenge

Heaps of prizes to be won, novelty games, live music and family activities. What a fun way to end the year with your

work colleagues and mates!

SAVE THE DATE!

This year all Year 10 students will be required to participate in work experience during Week 7, November 26-30.

This is a whole year activity and students need to approach employers now and com-plete required Student Placement Record and return to Careers Adviser, Mrs Sanson by the end of Week 5.

Work experience provides a valuable opportu-nity to:• Find a pathway into an apprenticeship or

traineeship. Many Gunnedah High School students have completed or are currently working towards completing a School Based

Traineeship or Apprenticeship. Work expe-rience has been essential in helping stu-dents to secure these positions with local businesses. Employers who have provided positions include Namoi Valley Brickworks, Peel Valley Machinery, Hunter New England Health, Reece Plumbing, McDonalds and many others.

• Evaluate whether a career path meets their expectations. Students may find that the work was not what they expected and change career directions.

• Secure part-time work.• Learn about the world of work from first-hand

experience.

Time to organisework experience

As a parent how can I help my student with career planning? Some suggestions that you may be able to follow to support your child in making career decisions are outlined below:

• Encourage your children to get the most out of their education

• Talk to them regularly about different occupations. Encourage them to 'think outside the square' and encourage them to investigate occupations that they may not know a lot about, especially ones that do not exist in the town we live in. The more you can expose them to different Careers the better.

• Challenge stereotypes.

• Talk about your own experiences, career decisions and pathways

• There are many Careers Events during the year. Encourage them to attend any that are available to them such as university open days, Try a Trade Days, Army Trades Day, Tamworth Careers Expo.

• Your interest, support and encouragement will be invaluable!

GUNNEDAH HIGH SCHOOL

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Mr Ken White Relieving Principal

TRANSITIONOver the past two weeks I have been vis-iting our Primary partner schools as part of our High School Transition program. We spoke to primary students about our great school and some of the wonderful things we offer here at Gunnedah High, as well as conducting some science experiments. It was also another great opportunity for me to meet our incoming students for next year and other years to come. I must pass on my thanks to Year 7 (2019) advisers Miss Constable and Mr Kiely, as well as Year 9 students Sophie and Cruze for their help with these successful visits. Thanks also to Ms Meek and Mr Proudfoot for assisting us with the science experiments when Miss Consta-ble couldn’t be at the visits.

SCHOOL FAIR

Don’t forget our school fair on Friday, No-vember 9. It promises to be a great event with Mr Mooney and his team working hard to make it the best GHS Fair ever!

FAREWELL MISS HOLDOMBy now I am sure that most of you are aware that Ms Emma Holdom is leaving soon to take up her new position as Head Teacher English at Morisset School. Emma has been at the school for 10 years and has been involved in all facets of school operations and activities. She has relieved as Head Teacher English at Gunnedah for the last three years and will be missed very much by students, staff and parents at the school. I wish Emma all the best in her new role. If there is any silver lining to this news, it is that

Mrs Belinda Foran was successful in gain-ing the position as permanent replace-ment Head Teacher at Gunnedah High. Mrs Foran will move across from her role as Head Teacher Teaching and Learning. We will advertise for a relieving Head Teacher, Teaching and Learning to fill the position until the end of the year.

UNIFORMJust a reminder that Gunnedah High School has an agreed uniform that has been endorsed by our P&C Association. The endorsed uniform is sold via our supplier Alinta and we have the uniform shop open on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Unfortunately, there are some students who are wearing clothes that are covered in logos that are not part of our uniform code. I ask that when parents/carers pur-chase uniform that they use the school

shop so that we can have a consistent uniform across the school.

DENTAL VANSome of you may have been confused about missed dental appointments when our dental van left earlier than expected last Friday. I apologise that this happened, and I can tell you that it was an issue that was in no way connected to the school and its organisation. It was a business operational matter to do with the owners/leasees of the van. I am not able to confirm if there will be more den-tal work available to students this year.

The GHS Fair is on Friday, November 9 from 5pm. Everyone is welcome – see you there!
