Mountain Biking

Mountain Biking

The Clarion Inn & Suites

Chewacla is located in the southern most foothills of the Appalachian Trail. This varying terrain complete with rocky outcrops, wide-banked curves, and steep dropoffs is the perfect setting for the best single track the state of Alabama has to offer. The park offers a wide variety of trails, ranging from beginner-friendly with progression built in, to hand-built trails with texture and options, along with a small skills area and the state’s only wall ride: a 15-foot-high arc with a 70-degree angle known as The Great Wall of Chewacla. Some of the best trails in the park aren’t about speed or skill, but scenery. Creek View parallels Chewacla Creek, which converges with Town Creek at the Natural Falls, a wide cascade that tumbles into a social swimming hole.

Mountain biking gives people of all ages and experience levels an opportunity to get outdoors, and these trails offer great riding in all four seasons. Auburn-Opelika’s local mountain biking club, the Central Alabama Mountain Pedalers (CAMP) is responsible for the thousands of hands-on volunteer hours that went into building these trails, and the group offers open instructional rides for all skill levels. Check out the weekly children’s Base Camp ride on Saturdays at 10am, Tuesday Night Group Rides & Grill, and the Sunday afternoon Ladies Only ride!

Pavilion Rentals

Chewacla offers several pavilions available for private rentals and special events. The upper pavilion is located on a large grassy knoll perfect for family gatherings and outdoor games and activities. Just a short hike to the waterfall, it is equipped with water, electricity, a barbecue pit and charcoal grill.

Beach pavilion is adjacent to Chewacla Lake’s swimming and boat rental area and features restrooms and one charcoal grill.

Lower pavilion features two charcoal grills and is the only pavilion with a wood-burning fireplace. Situated along Moore’s Mill Creek, it is located near the playground and mountain bike pump track.

Chewacla’s original Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) campground features two pavilions that are the only ones in the park available for day as well as night rental. The area includes a restroom and two charcoal grills. This original section of the park was constructed between 1934-1938 as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal Program.
