Enterprise mobility has been on the radar of

organizations for a while, yet for many it has

been a roadmap item rather than a priority.

Mobile projects have been delayed, viewed

as unimportant, or deemed “nice-to-haves.”

Moving into 2018, there is a new sense of

urgency. Enterprises are no longer just in

competition with other large enterprises,

but increasingly with mobile-first companies

that are disrupting industries and capturing

market share. New competition is coming

from everywhere at a frenetic pace. These

fast-moving, agile startups have less red

tape, mobile-first products and services,

and mobile workforces available at the tap

of a button: and they are coming after your

customers.

Uber turned the taxi industry on its head

almost overnight; AirBnB made waves

in the hotel and accommodation sector;

Netflix changed the way people consume

entertainment as one of the original

accelerators of the cord-cutting trend. These

are the most striking examples, but there

are plenty of others that are challenging the

status quo in industries typically dominated

by large enterprises, from banking to

healthcare to retail. In today’s market,

enterprises must put mobile top of mind,

or risk being blindsided and losing market

share.

The purpose of this paper is to provide

an overview of the enterprise mobility

landscape and the challenges organizations

are facing as they adapt to the rapidly

evolving mobile ecosystem. It will discuss

the increasing importance of mobile apps

through both an employee- and customer-

facing perspective, and how they are integral

to how enterprise operates and engages

customers. We apply analysis of the current

landscape and future trends, and provide

recommendations on how to navigate key

enterprise mobility challenges.

Enterprise is currently competing with a plethora of companies that have a mobile

workforce available to customers at the tap of a button. The emergence of the

service-for-hire model pioneered by companies like Uber means that organizations

have to not only target customers on mobile, but also enable their workforces to

compete with the changing nature of labour that mobile technologies are facilitating.

CHALLENGES STILL REMAIN

Capabilities and resourcing are among the

most pressing challenges for Enterprise app

development and deployment. Enterprise

organizations typically don’t possess

the capabilities for mobile in-house, and

increasingly have to compete for talent

with the very mobile-first startups that are

challenging their business. In fact, Gartner’s

CIO Survey found that lack of guidance to

help identify and source the required roles

and skills needed to create mobile apps was

one of the top priority issues identified.

RESOURCING AND CAPABILITIES

“By the end of 2017, demand for enterprise mobile app development services will grow at least five times faster than internal IT organizations’ capacity to deliver them” 17

“As a result of having fallen into app development as a business necessity, organizations are typically lacking in basic app development life cycle skills such as user experience (UX) design, quality assurance, mobile-specific back-end data integration and mobile-oriented security needs” 18

“There is a significant gap between organizations’ mobility goals and their ability to achieve these goals”

“Only 26% of organizations are adopting an in-house-only development approach; 55% are successfully delivering apps using mixed sourcing” 19

modernize their applications20. Emerging,

mobile-first competitors have a significant

advantage in that they don't face the same

legacy system issues and in many cases

have less complex security challenges than

their enterprise counterparts.

LEGACY SYSTEMS & SECURITY

challenge to organizations across the

enterprise space. On top of modifications

and updates that have to be made to

"While mobile applications become impossible to ignore and require new investments in application development platforms and tools, most organizations are challenged to improve the speed and agility of their application development processes."24

The demand for mobile applications continues to increase, and meeting this demand is proving challenging for organizations. Sourcing experienced developers, scaling development and delivery, and modernizing processes are among the most commonly cited barriers to mobility initiatives.

ability of organizations to implement enterprise mobility initiatives, including application

performance, project complexity, establishing necessary support infrastructure, and keeping up

Legacy systems exist everywhere; the major

challenge is interfacing with them and

figuring out how to pull the right data from

them. Where enterprises tend to struggle

is finding a way to take legacy systems that

have been created for disparate purposes,

centralizing them, and allowing people across

the organization to interface with them.

The best solution when facing this challenge

is creating an API layer that sits on top of the

legacy systems, which allows centralization.

This layer speaks to the legacy systems so

that the systems and data are available to

various facets of the business; anyone who

needs to can communicate with the legacy

systems through the API layer. Creating an

API layer also allows organizations to choose

what they expose so they can allow different

groups – employees, partners, customers,

etc. – to access specific subsections of the

systems based on their needs.

Security should be an underlying aspect of

your holistic mobile strategy. While enterprise

mobile security can be a complex issue to

tackle, there are a number of focus areas that

can lay the foundation for securing sensitive

data and systems. If you are using a bring

your own device (BYOD) model, a Mobile

Device Management (MDM) solution, like

SOTI or Airwatch, is essential. These solutions

create a sandbox where your enterprise apps

live, let you set compliance requirements,

remotely wipe data, and more.

If your organization is issuing the devices,

you have much more control over what

employees can access on the devices and

limit how the device is used. For example,

you can disable native apps, force the use of

whitelisted apps, have remote device locking

functionality, and more.

Data encryption, certificate underpinning,

and strong authentication measures are

also imperative to a well-rounded mobile

security strategy and are typically part of

MDM solutions. Importantly, your applications

security strategy should be formalized and

present early in the development lifecycle,

rather than a consideration that is addressed

in later stages

16

The most substantial challenges faced by

enterprises in their pursuit of employee-

facing apps stem from a gap in knowledge,

both in hiring the people needed to

successfully implement mobile solutions,

and in their current team’s mobile

capabilities. Mobile is new territory for

most, and it requires specific skill sets.

Mobile app development and delivery

requires more than a team of mobile

engineers. You will need an architect, UI/

UX designer, and product owner on top of

engineers.

Furthermore, mobile engineers tend to

turnover more quickly because there

is high demand for them in the market,

and they are accustomed to a different

work culture than most enterprises offer.

Organizations must have a plan that allows

them to adapt to constant change

IMPLEMENTING EMPLOYEE-FACING APPLICATIONS

UNDERSTAND RESOURCING AND CAPABILITY NEEDS

“Organizations want to have full control over

their mobile app development initiatives,

however, maintaining a pure in-house

development environment is difficult to

achieve given mobile is a relatively new

competency to many developers. It entails

many complexities and specific activities,

such as UX design and psychology or

cellular coverage testing, which may be

more efficiently handled by an outsourced

third party experienced in mobile app

development.” 27

CONSIDER A MIXED-SOURCING MODEL

In its analysis of enterprise application

trends, Gartner recommends adopting a

mixed-source approach, stating that 55

percent of organizations are successfully

delivering apps using this model.

This approach can be highly beneficial,

particularly for enterprises that are

just starting out with their enterprise

mobility initiatives, as it combines external

consultants and specialists with in-house

talent. This can help reduce internal costs

while also allowing internal team members

to gain the knowledge needed for future

initiatives.

Page 17: State of the Nation 2018 - clearbridgemob-wpengine.netdna ... · 94% of Enterprises say their organizations practice agile According to the 11th Annual State of Agile Report: 71%

17

Employee-facing apps can be easier and

cheaper to build, for a few reasons. First,

you don’t necessarily need to develop

natively (which is highly recommended for

customer-facing apps). Tools like Xamarin,

which allow for cross-platform deployment,

are more feasible since UX can be forced

to be uniform within an enterprise.

Furthermore, it is easier to confine device

types in enterprise, which is something

that can’t be controlled in consumer-

facing apps. This means you can dictate

what devices and operating systems are

supported. A predetermined inventory of

device and OS support allows enterprises

to build for a smaller number of platforms

and devices; more easily leverage cross-

platform tools to reduce costs; and avoid

platform fragmentation issues.

USE PLATFORMS THAT ALIGN WITH ORGANIZATIONAL NEEDS

Respondents from the Global State of

Enterprise Mobility 2016 report noted

that a key lesson learned from their

mobility initiative was “Think big, but start

smaller”. Consideration of the big picture is

important, but starting with a smaller, more

specific mobile project is the most efficient

way to get started.

We recommend that organizations

start with a “point app”; one that solves

a particular problem for a specific set

of users. An example would be an app

specifically for field service technicians that

allows them to interface with the back end

system, view their schedules, and report

on appointment status directly from the

application.

ADOPT A FOCUSED APPROACH

Page 18: State of the Nation 2018 - clearbridgemob-wpengine.netdna ... · 94% of Enterprises say their organizations practice agile According to the 11th Annual State of Agile Report: 71%

18

The skill set required for customer apps

can often be different from employee-

facing apps. Since these applications are

your brand, there is a heavy emphasis on

UX/UI and customer delight, so design

talent is imperative. With customer facing

apps, you need product managers that

truly understand mobile; understand your

business and its problems; and know how

to solve these problems. These people

are very difficult to find, so like employee-

facing enterprise apps, customer-facing

apps present enterprises with similar

resourcing difficulties. Therefore, a mixed-

sourcing model is something that should

be considered.

DETERMINE THE CAPABILITIES & RESOURCES NEEDED

IMPLEMENTING CUSTOMER-FACING APPLICATIONS“Expert consensus shows companies that

don’t put a mobile consumer strategy in

place today could easily find themselves in

the same place as those who didn’t develop

a web strategy 20 years ago” 28

FOCUS ON UX & CUSTOMER DELIGHTThe delivery of customer-facing apps is

different from internal apps. Your app is a

key customer touchpoint: you need to be

cutting-edge and offer a seamless user

experience. Design, customer delight, and

adding value is typically much more heavily

emphasized in contrast to employee-facing

apps.

THINK NATIVESince customer delight and user

experience is so important, we recommend

building your customer apps natively.

Native apps perform better and are able to

take full advantage of the unique design

conventions that are exclusive to each

platform; are typically faster; and don’t

have the UX limitations non-native apps do.

Page 19: State of the Nation 2018 - clearbridgemob-wpengine.netdna ... · 94% of Enterprises say their organizations practice agile According to the 11th Annual State of Agile Report: 71%

19

Customer-facing apps are typically more

difficult to build and take more time,

for a variety of reasons: broader range

of platform and device support; more

emphasis on design; the need for native

builds, etc. You will also need a marketing/

user acquisition plan to promote the app

and acquire users. Budgets should be

congruent with your success benchmarks

for the application.

Ideally, organizations should have a 3-6

month vision for their app that aims to

solve their business problems. Initial

launch is just the first step; you need to

have a process of delivering successfully,

continuously, into the market. The mantra

of continuous iteration is important to

assess and analyze the application; add

features to improve the user experience;

and stay ahead of the constantly changing

mobile ecosystem.
