SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Charles Thomas Leonard Papers, containing approximately 10,500 items and one volume, span the period of 1855-1992, although the bulk is largely concentrated in the years 1962-1988. The collection is composed of an account book, associations, institutions, etc., certificates, church records, correspondence, genealogical data, invitations, programs, etc., a ledger book, maps, photographs, drawings, etc., school records, slavery, writings, and several miscellaneous items. Genealogical data make up the main body of the collection. Charles Thomas Leonard (1941-1993) while employed as a librarian at the National Genealogical Society in Washington, D.C. became interested in his family history. At this time he began research work on the Leonard, Twitty, Little, Sims, Metcalf, Snodgrass, Broyles, Cameron, and Officer family lines. Later, after returning to his family home in Sparta, Tennessee, he continued his family history research and would expand this to include many White County family names when he became White County Historian. There is genealogical data on more than 500 family names, not including collateral lines. In the early 1970s, Leonard opened a floral, antiques, and gift shop, “The Jacob Tree,” in Sparta. In the collection are an account book, announcements, and business cards concerning this business. There are several items relating to the Officer Family Association in the Leonard Papers. Included in the church records is a directory and history of the First United Methodist Church of Sparta, Tennessee, as well as the minutes of the Stockton’s Valley Association of United Baptists, Overton County, Tennessee, September 1971. Correspondence is arranged under the following sub-headings: family and general/genealogical. As White County Historian, Mr. Leonard was forwarded numerous genealogical inquiries from the White County Clerk’s Office, the Sparta Public Library, and also came into possession of letters addressed to Mrs. B.R. Mitchell, former White County Historian, and to Judge Casto Officer. Among the invitations, programs, etc., is an invitation to a revival sermon by the Reverend Sam Jones on October 2, 1888. There are two sets of oversize maps: the Cumberland Plateau by the State Forestry Division, and the Tennessee State Board of Equalization for White County. There are many unidentified photographs in the collection. It would appear that Leonard acquired these while serving as Historian of White County.

There are two special sets of papers in the collection: the papers of W.F. Story, Jr., a prominent land developer in White County, and the O.L. Johnson Papers containing, among other items, letters from his son Esker serving with the U.S. Army in France during the First World War. School records include a program of the closing exercises of the Riverside High School on June 24, 1881. The slavery item is a bill of sale for slaves in 1855. There is a ledger book for an unidentified general store for the period of 1889-1894. Two boxes of loose county court records will be returned to White County. Included is a court minute book for 1814-1817. The following publications were transferred to the library holdings of the Tennessee State Library and Archives: Glomerata, Yearbooks of Auburn University, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965 White County Court Minutes, 1812-1814 Probate Records of Van Buran County, 1840-1860 History of First United Methodist Church, Sparta, Tennessee Doyle Elementary School, 1990-1991 1830 Census for Middle Tennessee White County, Tennessee Cemetery Records, Vol. 1 and 2 Burgess History: A Tennessee Pioneer The Tennessee Phantoms The Plumlee Family Felix G.
