STATE MEDICINE PLANTS BOARD, J&K Jammu & Kashmir State Medicinal Plants Board (SMPB) was established in January 2001 under the Chairmanship of the Hon’ble Minister for Health & Medical Education as an independent entity in its working to coordinate, monitor and give directions in accordance with the programs and policies of National Medicinal Plants Board (NMPB) Department of ISM (AYUSH), Govt. of India related to development and sustainable use of medicinal plants in Jammu & Kashmir State. Medicinal plants form the major resource base of our indigenous health care traditions. Presently 8000 small & large scale AYUSH Drugs Manufacturing Industries are established all-over the Country. The Cultivation of medicinal plants, therefore, is key to meet the raw material needs of the AYUSH drug industry besides offering opportunities for higher levels of income, crop diversification and growth of exports. Further increasing concerns of unsustainable collection from the wild, disappearance of certain high demand species on one hand and concerns of quality and standardization on the other make it imperative to promote cultivation of species critical to AYUSH systems of medicines through appropriate financial incentives, policy, infrastructural and marketing support in a synergistic manner. The main Functions of the Board are:- Advise other dept. / organizations / NGOs / universities / individuals etc on policy matters relating to schemes and programs for development of Medicinal Plants. Registration of Traders, Cultivators, Processors, Collectors and other stakeholders involved in the trade. Coordinate with other Deptt/Organization for development of Medicinal Plants in general and specifically in the following fields. Assessment of demand/supply position relating to Medicinal Plants both within the state and outside. Provide guidance in formulation of project proposals. Two herbal gardens established in Bhaderwah ( One at Dradoo & other at Baloot) were recently inaugurated by Hon’ble Union Minister of Health & FW Sh. Gulam Nabi Azad.

For conservation and development of Medicinal Plants Rs.611.32 lacs was sanctioned out of which Rs.350.00lacs stands released and placed at the disposal of Forest department for protection of existing Medicinal Plants resources.

Rs.686.60 Lacs for state Horticulture mission on Medicinal Plants was sanctioned out of which Rs.328.65 Lacs have been released to the Horticulture Mission of the state for implementation of Medicinal Plants Mission and out of Rs 41.40 lacs have been spent so for.

The Awareness regarding the promotion & propagation of Amla which is beneficial for the treatment of dreadful maladies i.e. Arthritis, Diabetes, and Gastritis besides actively involved as an immunomodulator was given to the farmers. Due to mass cultivation in Kandi areas of Jammu Division it gives ample benefits simultaneously a source of livelihood to the farmers and populace of Jammu Division.

Amla plantation drive has been launched by the Hon’ble Minister for Health Horticulture and Floriculture in 2010 at Govt. Degree collage Akhnoor and with regard to this about 1 Lac Amla saplings have been raised in different nurseries with the collaboration of Department of SFRI J&K Jammu & Department of Horticulture Jammu and till date about 80,000 thousands Amla saplings have been distributed to the farmers and other organizations free of cost in the various camps organized by the J&KSMPB itself and the Department of Horticulture Jammu.

Awareness campaign on promotion and propagation of Amla has been organized in various Schools/Colleges of J&K state to educate the students about the usage, cultivation practices and also from the economic benefits and medicinal aspects. For this, about 160 institutions have been covered so for.

An Amla Orchard has been established by J&K SMPB at Govt Degree College Akhnoor on the directions of Hon’ble minister for Health, Horticulture and floriculture and the same is being maintained by the College itself.

Community Awareness/Training programs on promotion and mass cultivation of Amla are been organized in various Kandi areas of Jammu division in which around 1500 farmers have been educated about the potential of Amla in the increasing livelihood of farmers.

J&K SMPB has involved various scientific research institutes for preserving the gene bank of rare

and endangered species of Medicinal Plants.

A comprehensive project proposal for establishment of Demonstration herbal Gardens and

specialized AYUSH centers for promoting herbal tourism in the state stands submitted to the State

Govt.

STATE ACTION PLAN OF J&K SMPB (2009-14)

The J&K State Medicinal Plants Board submitted a comprehensive State Action Plan to Deptt. of AYUSH Govt of India for conservation, development and sustainable management of Medicinal Plants

The Action plan covers all the areas of Medicinal plants sector with a financial outlay of Rs. 7650.00 lacs for four years.

PROJECTS SANCTIONED / FUNDS RELEASED UNDER STATE ACTION PLAN

A project proposal of J&K Forest Department for conservation and development of medicinal plants to the tune of Rs. 611.32 lacs out of which Rs. 350.00 lacs stands released and placed at the disposal of Forest Department.

An amount of Rs. 11.50 lacs stands transferred to Divisional Forest Officer, Leh for conservation & development of Seabuckthorn.

The PIP of State Horticulture Mission on Medicinal Plants was sanctioned to the tune of Rs. 686.60 lakhs, out of which Rs. 328.65 lakhs have been released to the Horticulture Mission of the State.

Under IEC component, an amount of Rs. 40.00 lakhs has been released to J&K State Medicinal Plants Board for implementation of National Campaign on Amla.

A project proposal under IEC component stands sanctioned to Director Field Research Institute, DRDO Leh

to organize a National Level Seminar on high altitude Medicinal plants

NATIONAL CAMPAIGN ON AMLA IN J&K STATE.

J&K SMPB has already launched the campaign and has covered the following activities: -
