Greetings to All! This has been a very trying winter for us all here in Illi-nois with all the snow and ice and high winds that we

have had, but we as Lions

continue to stand up and serve no matter what. I at-

tended the Lions of Illinois

Foundation Board of Trus-tees meeting in February and

there was discussion on dis-

aster funds and that there is still a need in communities

due to the tornados that went

thru our state last fall.

So, I sent out an email to all the Council of Governors

and as of this writing I have heard back from most of them. I asked them to tell me if there were still needs in

their Districts and where and what those needs were be-

cause there is still disaster money that has been collected here in Illinois that needs to be disbursed.

Remember that we had 6 of our districts hit by that storm system and here is what I have heard so far from

my Governors.

Here are the results of my survey by District: A- OK and

needs no money; B - OK and needs no money; CN - the

District is currently meeting the needs of the New Min-den, Hoyleton, and Centralia areas and says to send the

money elsewhere; CS - currently OK; D - OK and has

no needs; E - the district is currently working with the Gifford area where the water supply is currently mini-

mal. The Gifford area stresses that as the spring arrives

that more problems will become visible. Work has be-gun to plan on tree replanting and getting street signs

back up. Also, currently the food pantry serving the area

is in need of canned fruits as their supply is very low. For further details contact DG Butch. District F - OK

and has no needs and has money they will be deciding

on disbursement; G - OK and has no needs and will be looking at disbursing money on hand; H - currently the

district is waiting on direction from the Washington area

- the district has funds on hand but at this time do not know specific needs.

For updates please contact DG Tawny. J - no needs at this time and will be disbursing money on hand; K - they

are currently working on replacement of eyeglasses and

hearing aids to storm victims - they have some money available for this but not sure how much will be needed

as the requests come in; L - no needs at this time. I hope

that this answers everyone’s questions about where to send disaster money that has been collected.

Remember that there are District Conventions that will

begin to take place and for any information about them, please go to our MD 1 website or check the Special

Convention Issue of our State Magazine that was pub-

lished last month. I encourage you to get involved and attend your convention to reconnect with your Lions

family members, and to meet and talk with the Interna-

tional speaker that will be in attendance. I also know that many informative seminars have been planned at the

conventions and I encourage you and your club members

to take advantage of the learning opportunity they af-ford.

Our MD 1 State Convention Committee headed by State Chair PDG Judy Tapper is hard at work putting together

our State Convention that will be held at the Hilton in

Lisle on May 16-18, 2014. Be sure to get your registra-tion sent in and book your hotel room early. A great

convention is being planned and remember that we will

also be celebrating the 40th Anniversary of our Lions of Illinois Foundation at the convention. The Foundations

Anniversary planning committee has been working hard

on some special plans, so come to Lisle and help us cel-ebrate. The Council of Governors are looking for dedi-

cated Lions to serve on various state convention commit-

tees, so contact your District Governor and see where you can serve.

Also, at the State Convention we will be voting on 6 Resolutions and they are printed in this issue of the State

Magazine. Resolutions 1,2,3 and 4 are from the Council

of Governors and Resolutions 5 and 6 were submitted by District 1-J. I encourage you to read them carefully and

ask questions of your Constitution and Bylaws District

representative and your District Governor. Also, you may contact me with any questions or comments that

you might have on any of the Resolutions. Remember also that the Friday night plenary session at the Conven-

tion and the District Caucus time at the convention will

be open for discussion of these Resolutions.

The Council Policy Committee is continuing to work on

updating our Lions of Illinois Policy Manual. This has been a project that has been worked on entire year, and

much progress has been made to update the Manual to

make it a more useful tool in the running of this state. Lions International has developed a wonderful learning

tool called webinars.

There are many great topics that are talked about and to

find out information on them and to register for the

webinar sessions, go to www.lionsclubs.org. Training of our membership is very important so that they can learn

more about being a valuable Lion who is willing to

serve. We MUST train our new members when we in-duct them into our clubs, we MUST continue to train our

3

Page 4: State magazine march, 2014

members to keep them as members, and we MUST con-

tinue to let our work be known in our communities. The more our communities know about what we do the more

members we will get into our clubs. Do not keep our

work or our mission of WE SERVE a secret. Spread the word about Lionism. Thank you everyone for taking the

time to serve.

Editorial:

TIME TO CELEBRATE!

Starting March, in Lionism it is time to celebrate. One after another Districts will have their conventions

planned followed by Multiple Dis-

tricts and then finally International

Convention.

This year in MD1, District 1H start-

ed their convention in third week of February followed by 1CN in last

week of February, 1CS on March 15th weekend, 1B and

1L weekend of March 22nd, 1A and 1K weekend of March 29th, 1D, 1F and 1J weekend of April 5th and 1G

in the weekend of April 12th. MD1 convention will take

place in the weekend of May 17th and International con-

vention will take place in from July 4th to 7 in Ontario,

Canada.

It is really fun to attend these conventions and see what other districts in State of Illinois celebrate. This year our

District 1A convention will be in the same hotel – Wes-

tin in Itasca. What a fun-filled event this will be for Dis-trict 1A Lions, Lionesses and Leos and to their family

member and friends.

This year’s MD1 Convention will be in Hotel Hilton, Lisle – closer to District 1A. At this convention many

lions from MD1 will be receiving their President’s and

Leadership Medals. What a way to attend this conven-tion and cheer up our winning lions. Recognizing what

they did and giving a pat on their back for doing a great

job for lionism in their districts and state.

Attending these conventions will be a great experience –

fellowship, friendship, ideas and fun. Meeting various

International Directors and listening to their inspirational speeches. This lionistic friendship will last forever –

life time. Lion Terry & I have decided to attend as

many District Conventions as possible except 1K which falls during our own convention.

As a last note, hope all of you like my MD1 State e-Magazine with news and view from all 12 Districts from

MD1. If you had no chance to read, let me know

through e-mail and I will be glad to send you the links

where you can read all 9 issues of MD1 e-Magazine on

the Web. My e-mail is: [email protected].

See many of you during your District Conventions and

or during MD1 State Convention in Lisle.

SYNOPSIS OF COUNCIL OF

GOVERNORS MEETING The Council of Governors met on Saturday, February 1,

2014 at the Parke Regency Hotel in Bloomington. Fol-

lowing is a brief description of decisions that were made at the meeting.

Financial auditor:

Finance Committee Chair PCC Terry Knollenberg pre-

sented to the Council the findings of the search the committee made for a Auditing Firm for next year. The

recommendation of Eck, Schaffer & Punk (currently be-

ing used by the State) was approved.

SST evaluation & contract:

The Council Executive Committee met and reviewed the Council’s evaluations of SST Michele. The Council met

with all the VDGs in Executive session to apprise them

of the results. The SST’s work was found to be accepta-ble and SST Michele’s contract was extended with a

raise in pay and a raise in mileage reimbursement.

Sale of building & property:

It was reported that there is still a pending interest in our

state office building and property. It was decided to find a realty company and list the property and building for

sale, under the condition that if the pending interest

should develop into a purchase that they would have first chance at the property and building.

Offsite computer backup: The Council has discussed this year of the feasibility of

having a offsite backup system in place to protect the

records on the computer. It was approved and a backup program has been purchased from Carbonite.

2015 State pin design contest:

The Council asks that state pin designs for the 2015 In-

ternational Convention to be held in Hawaii be submit-ted to the State Office by April 1, 2014.

The designs will be reviewed at the State Convention and one will be chosen. The winning design will be dis-

played at the Convention and orders are to be submitted

4

Page 5: State magazine march, 2014

to the State Office by May 25 with the order being sub-

mitted to the pin company on June 2, 2014.

Resolutions to be voted on at 2014 State Convention:

The Council reviewed 6 resolutions that are to be

brought to the delegates at the State Convention.

Resolution #1 is recommended for adoption by the

Council. The Council feels that we ask the Incoming Council Chair and the International Convention Chair to

serve then they should be allowed some reimbursement;

especially since they both are required to attend. The incoming Council Chair and Council of Governors hold

their first Council Meeting at the end of the Convention.

Resolution #2 is recommended for adoption by the

Council. The Council feels that this is a housekeeping

resolution. We have many qualified Lions who can serve as State Chairs even though they have not had the oppor-

tunity to serve on that particular committee in their re-

spective districts.

Resolution #3 is recommended for adoption by the

Council. The Council feels that this is a right step in the right direction for the growth of MD 1.

Resolution #4 is approved by the Council of Governors

for this resolution to be brought to the delegates at the State Convention to be voted on.

Resolution #5 is approved by the Council of Governors for this resolution to be brought to the delegates at the

State Convention to be voted on.

Resolution #6 is approved by the Council of Governors

for this resolution to be brought to the delegates at the

State Convention to be voted on.

2014 MD 1 Forum:

The Council of Governors approved the date of Novem-ber 7-8, 2014 for the MD-1 Forum to be held at the

Parke Regency in Bloomington.

2015 State Convention:

The Council of Governors approved the date of May 15-17, 2015 for the State Convention. A contract proposal is

being requested from The Thelma Keller Convention

Center in Effingham for review.

How Full is Your Bucket?

Recently, I was reorganizing our

bookcase. I came across a book I had read previously entitled, How

Full Is Your Bucket by Tom Rath

and Donald Clifton, Phd. I had

used ideas from this book as a staff and student development

project as a school counselor and

again as a school principal, but I had not turned the

pages recently.

These activities met

one of the state re-quirements that ex-

pected schools to

not only teach read-ing, writing, and

arithmetic, but also

promote a positive school environment.

I flipped through a

few pages and won-

dered what would happen if these ide-

as were applied to

our Lions Clubs.

The premise behind

the Dipper and the Bucket is that each of us carries an invisible bucket. It is constantly being filled or emptied

as we interact with the people around us. When we do

or say something positive to someone else, we not only

fill our own personal bucket, but also fill the bucket of

the other person. When something negative occurs, both buckets are emptied.

The person carrying around a bucket that is filled will likely have a high level of energy, a positive outlook,

and a strong optimistic attitude. A person carrying

around a bucket that is empty has little energy, interacts

negatively with others, and is typically unhappy. More work, at a higher level of quality gets done when people

have full buckets.

Applying this idea to our Lions Clubs, I would hope that

our clubs are places where our buckets are being filled.

We come to meetings and have positive encounters with other members. People are treated with respect and dig-

nity. Accepting of diversity is the norm. Ideas are

shared proactively. Communication is clear between

and among all members. If a disagreement occurs, it is addressed diplomatically in such a way as to allow both

parties to be heard and understood. Lions are helped

when taking on the challenge of being a club officer, committee member, or project chair. Said simply, living

by our Lions Code of Ethics, there is no emptying of an-

yone’s bucket, leaving a Lion feeling unappreciated.

And we all know that unappreciated Lions, or volunteers in general, will find a reason not to be involved. When

Lions are lost due to lack of involvement, fewer hands

are available to serve our communities. The needs of those less fortunate are not met.

So, what is your club doing, filling or emptying buckets?

Lions of Illinois Foundation Lions Fox Valley 5K Run/Walk for Diabetes and the Visually Impaired Saturday, April 12, 2014

The “Lions Fox Valley 5K Run/Walk” is re-placing District 1-J’s version of the Lions of Illinois Foundation’s (LIF) “Walk for Sight”, which was last held during June of 2012. The LIF’s “Lions Fox Valley 5K

Run/Walk for Diabetes and the Visually Impaired” will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2014, with the run/walk starting at 8 am. Starting location of the walk will be from Mount St. Mary's Park in St. Charles and utilizing the Park and Trails along the Fox River. The Lions Fox Valley 5K run/walk is for all Lions, Lioness, Leo’s, and anyone who wants to run or walk and help our charitable causes. Until March 31st, registration is $25 for anyone interested in the run/walk. However, registrations will be accepted until the start of the run/walk. There will also be a one mile fun run, and children under 12 years of age can registrar for $10. Applications received before the March 31st deadline will receive a t-shirt. Refreshments and a raffle will be available during the awards ceremony.

13

Page 14: State magazine march, 2014

Our LIF helps between 18,000 and 20,000 each year and the numbers could only grow with addi-tional support. More important is that you will be helping someone (child or adult) with the detection of a major problem. Hopefully, this will aid them in getting assistance before a major problem devel-ops. There is more involved, but this is a start. Mark this date: Saturday, April 12th on your calen-dar, and help the Lions helping others. Also, let your friends know of this event and invite them along – they are also welcome. We also welcome other Lions Districts to participate and if anyone can be sponsored by one or more individuals that

would be an additional plus. Additional information covering this event; registra-tion, location, forms, and map is now available by clicking on this link: Lions Fox Valley 5K Run Walk. Race information can be viewed and forwarded to others that might be interested in participating. We have an e-mail address setup so you can contact the committee or we can forward requested run/walk information. Lions 5K Committee e-mail address: [email protected]. Thank you,

40th Anniversary Cruise

The 40th anniversary committee of the Foundation put

together a cruise to celebrate the 40th

anniversary of the Lions of

Illinois Foundation and all the good work the Foundations has

accomplished over that time. We sailed with 89 Lions, from every

District in the State, on the cruise. We started from Tampa, went

to Key West, Coxen Hole, Roatan, Santa Tomas, Guatemala, Costa

Maya, Mexico, and back to Tampa. The food was great, the sight-

seeing was fantastic and meeting and visiting with other Lions

was fun. The talk is that we should do it again in 2015.

“WE SERVE” PLACED INTO

ACTION Brookport, Illinois. November 20, 2013. A deadly tornado ripped through the small community of Brookport, leaving three dead in its path of destruction. Governor Waymon “Moe” Johnson immediately sought emergency relief funds from Lions Clubs International Foundation. And soon there was $10,000.00 at the district’s disposal to aid the victims of Brookport. Governor Moe assembled a team to determine the needs and to react to those needs. That team consisted of PDG Jani Robinson, PDG Chip Farring-ton, PDG Alma Young, Lion Mark Ben-son, Lion Barbara and DG Moe John-son and IPDG Randy Ferguson. It was determined that budgets had been strained from the devastation and rebuilding of the community. The decision was made to be sure the vic-tims had a Christmas dinner. Contact was made with Big John’s Grocery in nearby Metropolis. The owners, them-selves former tornado victims, sold the food items at a discounted price and deliver it to a Brookport church. December 23, 2013 the packaging of the food items began. Each grocery sack contained one half ham, one tur-key, green beans, mashed potatoes, gravy, apples, oranges, cookies, and Lions mints. This was enough to make one complete meal. The deliveries were made by Lions with a community member ride-along for directions. PDG Jani says there were tears shed and laughter shared as the bags were distributed. These Lions were assisted by many community members such as Frances Neal, Pastor Ronnie White and Lynda, Deacon Allen Webb and Connie, Lela Beard, Lawanda Webb, Debbie Christansen, Lucille Shannon, Linda Martin, Kelvin Welch, Jan Houston and Cindy Braderoup. Pastor Ronnie White was so impressed by the Lions that he has expressed an

interest to join the Lions.

Convention and Vacation

season will soon be here. I

would like to pass on these

tips. A person gave this to

me. This person was in the

hotel management busi-

ness.

Tips for a Clean Hotel Room

A few simple steps to clean up your hotel

room can lower your risk of getting sick.

When you arrive at your room, take out your

antibacterial wipes. (Yes you need to start

packing them).

When hotel staff cleans a room, they focus

on the basics, sheets, towels, showers, sinks

and floors. The rest of the room doesn’t get

much attention. So take matters into your

own hands by wiping down the TV remote,

phone, alarm clock, door handles, lights

switches, coffee maker, hair dryer, etc.

Take off the bedspread. In most hotels, they

rarely get wash. Don’t use the extra blan-

kets. They don’t get wash.

# 1. Thing to avoid is the glasses. Use the

plastic wrapped disposable cups.

Housekeepers are only provided with clean-

ers (not soap) so they often put some hot

water in the sink and put the glasses in there

with shampoo. They want them streak free,

so they’ll often use some furniture polish

just to get the shine.

Cleaning up your room sounds like a lot of

work, but it will take a few minutes, and

you’ll save yourself from a lot of nasty

germs.

Also don’t forget the germ-x hand sanitizer.

After ordering your meal use the hand sani-

tizer, menus, salt and pepper and other items

on the table may have germs.

Dear Lions Club Members,

The Lions Club’s Mission of community service,

good citizenship, and promoting the welfare of the

community is a very no

Green Youth Challenge

In 1885 the National Education Association called

for observation of Arbor Day in all of the nation’s

schools on the official Arbor Day of their own

State. It was a resounding endorsement of J. Ster-

ling Morton’s founding of Arbor Day. When the

Nebraskan was later asked about the holiday he re

marked, “All other holidays repose upon the past,

while Arbor Day proposes for the future.”

School observations grew by leaps and bounds.

Over the years, millions of children received and

planted millions of seedlings . . . millions of seed-

lings that grew into millions of mature trees. To-

gether, those trees make up a unique forest. A forest

planted by generations of America’s children.

Somehow the School Arbor Day tradition began to

fade away and now only relatively few kids get a

tree to take home and plant it on their State’s Arbor

Day.

It’s time to reverse the decline.

Now in the era of global warming and air pollution,

tree planting is even more important than ever.

Trees take carbon dioxide (CO2) out of the atmos-

phere to help reduce warming and help clean the air

we breathe. Planting trees is a simple, inexpensive

and easy way to address the problem.

The Fourth Grade Foresters Project has four major

goals:

1. To revitalize observation of Arbor Day in Ameri-

ca’s schools on the official Arbor Day proclaimed

in their own state.

2. To send every fourth grader home with a tree of

their own to plant and care for.

3. To support employment of workers with disabili-

ties. (Each tree is individually packaged for distri-

bution by workers with disabilities.)

4. To bring schools, community service organiza-

tions, businesses, and private individuals together to

have direct positive impact on the urban forests of

their communities.

In its first seven years, the Fourth Grade Foresters

USA and nearly 2,570 sponsors provided more than

505,000 trees to fourth graders in 46 states. Lions

Club’s alone contributed 48,800 trees from 294

clubs.

For more information visit:

www.fourthgradeforestersusa.com.

How Lions Clubs Can Help

If a Lions Club becomes a sponsor of the Fourth

Grade Foresters they will:

1. Build a new connection with the community by

making it possible for trees to be planted and cared

for in your local Urban Forest . . . the trees sur-

rounding the homes of your citizens.

2. Share the message and vision of the Club directly

with local families.

3. Help kids learn that they make a difference in

their community and have a direct impact on the

environment.

4. Help local Fourth Grade Foresters set an example

for the entire community. The trees they plant will

become a forest that will benefit the environment

and generations to come.

There is absolutely no cost to the student, the teach-

ers, the schools, or the school district. The individu-

ally packaged 12” – 18” trees are available for

$1.79 per tree, including shipping. Every tree is,

packaged by workers with disabilities.

The cost to provide a tree to a Fourth Grader in-

cludes:

*An individually packaged 12” to 18” evergreen

tree recommended for growth in your state.

*A bag tag attached to each tree featuring planting

and care instructions and you attach any

information about the Club you wish to include.

*You will be provided with media kits to send in-

formation to local media.

Fourth Grade Foresters USA is not a nonprofit or-

ganization but rather a catalyst for direct sponsor-

ship of the project in local communities and at the

grass roots level. Your sponsorship takes center

stage as a community service and public relations

outreach while we provide trees, packaging, and

logistics. Our role is that of a service resource for

the program. In providing those services we hire

workers with disabilities to prepare and package all

of the trees given to fourth graders.

As leaders in this program the Society will set an

inspiring example to organizations across the state

and nation and will be known by their good work at

home and afar.

Sincerely,

Sarah Henne,

Fourth Grade Foresters Project Coordinator.

The Lions of the World will be descending on the

City of Chicago to celebrate their 100th Anniversary

in 2017. The Lions of Illinois, Multiple District 1

will serve as the Host Committee for the Centennial

Convention. It may sound like it is still far away,

but there is a lot to prepare for in the years leading

up to the convention.

The Centennial Convention will be June 30 - July

4, 2017. The main venue will be McCormick Place

and about 8 to 12 hotels will be used to house the

more than 25,000 attendees that are being antici-

pated to attend this milestone in our

Association’s history. The International Parade is

scheduled for Saturday, July 1 and will march down

either Clark or State Street.

The Host Committee is still in need of LIONS who

are willing to be an active leader. The Host Com-

mittee is responsible to promote the committee ac-

tivities and the convention at various functions

throughout the coming years; hosting of the visitors

during their stay in Chicago; the marshalling of the

parade and various sessions that will take place dur-

ing the convention and the fund raising to allow for

the committee to carry-out the committee responsi-

bilities. There are various areas that LION Leaders

are still needed to assist and be an active member in

the planning of the committee’s activities.

Right now, we have two projects that will step off

our fund raising efforts this Spring. This Commem-

orative Pin will be available to all Lions for a $5.00

donation to the committee. Pins will be available in

later February and at all District Conventions. The

other is a banner patch that will be given to the club

that makes a direct donation to the committee.

There are three levels of donations - $100.00,

$250.00 or $500.00. Each level of donation will

have its own distinct patch.

Over the next couple of years, the Host Committee

will be presenting programs that will inform the

LIONS of ILLINOIS about the duties and responsi-

bilities that are needed to coordinate the Hosting of

the Centennial Convention. LION Volunteers will

be a big part of this committee with a lot more in-

formation coming as we get closer to the conven-

tion. If you are interested in being an active leader

on the Host Committee, you can reach Lion Bob

Block, PDG at [email protected] or by phone

(219) 671-0287 for additional information.

Remember that there is always a place for

YOU to volunteer. We’re excited to finally announce the winners for Lions Clubs International’s first ever social media photo contest held in honor of #MatteosDream. In December, we asked Lions to share photos on Facebook and Instagram that show how your club makes dreams come true. The responses were great, and choosing a winner was no easy task! - See more at: http://lionsclubs.org/blog/2014/01/27/matteosdream-photo-contest-winners/#sthash.WWFjU2ZS.dpuf
