State Game Land 192 is a single tract consisting of 333 acres within the PGC's Northwest Region, Wildlife Management Unit 1B. It is about 15 miles southeast of Erie, 3 miles southwest of Waterford, 7 miles north of Cambridge Springs and about 3 miles east of the college town of Edinboro, in Washington and Waterford Townships, Erie County, Pennsylvania.

The general aspect of this portion of the county is a series of deep broad valleys separated by gently undulating broad ridge tops. Ridge top elevations are generally from 1,200 to 2,000 feet. Valley elevations are mostly less than 1,000 feet. Local relief is minimal and seldom exceeds 100 feet. Elevations on SGL 192 range from about 1300-1610 feet above sea level.

State Game Land 192 is located approximately 3 miles east of Edinboro and 3 miles southwest of Waterford. It can be easily accessed by 2 secondary roads. The south end of SGL 192 has a small amount of road frontage and a parking area along Lewis Road (T-407). Smedley Road (T-550), a north-south running road, borders the east boundary and contains a parking area.

Currently, 16.33 acres and 0.36 acres of the game land are within 150-yard and 50-yard safety zones, respectively

State Game Land 192 receives light hunting pressure, primarily for deer and turkey. There is potential for small game hunting, including ruffed grouse, but it is limited, and pressure is light. Also, there is an unusual concentration of oaks on this game land and thus potential for squirrel hunting. This game land is not stocked with ring-necked pheasants. Snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and geocaching appear to be popular on the game land.

The game land harbors an uncharacteristically rich oak component with both red and white oaks represented. Since 1973, there have been 5 commercial timber sales which have resulted in a mixture of forest seral stages. Additionally, there are several open fields and 6 small anthropogenic shallow water impoundments.

SPORTSMEN'S RECREATION MAP

Each time a hunter buys a hunting license, the

money he spends goes toward many facets of

wildlife management. Since 1920, close to a million

and a half aces of State Game Lands have been

acquired with these funds. Each year nearly

$7,000,000 is spent to improve wildlife habitat.

Habitat improvements enhance living conditions for

non-game birds and mammals as well as those

species which are hunted. Pennsylvania hunters

willingly share these lands with the non-hunting

public, and with few exceptions, State Game Lands

are open for general use year round. Surveys

indicate that hunting accounts for only thirty-five

percent of game land usage. The remaining sixty-

five percent is used by the general public for non-

hunting purposes.

“Working Together for Wildlife” is a Game

Commission program providing everyone an

opportunity to help support wildlife management in

the areas for endangered and non-game animals.

Monies derived from the “Working Together for

Wildlife” Program are being used in Pennsylvania to

re-introduce the osprey, river otter, bald eagle,

peregrine falcon and provide habitat for other birds

and mammals indigenous to the Commonwealth.

Construction placement of blue bird houses on State

Game Lands provides needed homes for this

beautiful songbird. Islands in the Susquehanna River

have been set aside as propagations areas for non-

game shore birds. Numerous other projects are

planned on State Game Lands and other public
