Catholic Daughters of the Americas strives to embrace the principle of faith working through love in the promotion of justice, equality, and the advancement of human rights and human dignity for all.

My Sweet Sisters in Christ,

As I sit here today to write this message, we are facing another hurdle; freezing cold weather, snow, sleet and rain. God is trying to speak to us loudly, but do we hear Him through all the noise of the world? As devoted Christian women, let’s listen for His voice and receive His message.

As we enter into this Lenten season, I am ready to delve into the sufferings of Christ and the beautiful Easter Resurrection. This lent, for me, will be more special than the past. Our Christianity is being threatened more now than ever, but not only by outsiders, but by us. Why? Because of fear! Many of the saints of the past had fear stand in their way. Is fear controlling you? Fear has no place in a believer’s life. So, we must pray and ask the Holy Spirit to speak to us in ways that build us up and give us the courage to stand firm in our faith.

I received a message today from Dynamic Catholic: “Every single human being, every life created by God matters to God. No one is more important or significant than or valued than any other. Here’s the catch: If each person matters to God, then each human should matter to us.” Allen R. Hunt. Wow! As Catholic Daughters please remember to treat others with kindness, love and compassion as Jesus Christ treats each of us.

Regent’s Message Cont.

My time as your State Regent is nearing an end and it is bittersweet. I hope I served you in ways that matter most. We worked hard as a team to enrich your spiritual life, to help with your duties as local Court officers, and to be available anytime you had questions or concerns. As this is my last newsletter, I pray you are well and that the newsletters gave you valuable information and encouragement. I ask that all of you pray for our State Convention to be a successful, prayerful time. While the numbers will be smaller, we are encouraged that many are still registering. We promise to work very hard to make this a wonderful experience for the new comers and the old timers. Shhh…Father Jason is working hard to have something special for us. We have lots of events planned…you will not want to miss out on Thursday, from the Workshops to the Spiritual Events. And the Fun Night “CDA Has Talent” show will be a one of a kind! Laughter is the best medicine, we hope to have lots.

I am praying you all enjoy a very blessed Easter season. May the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior remind us that He is always with us, no matter the struggles.

God bless and stay safe,Dawn

Chaplain’s MessageDear Sisters in Christ:

So what are you doing for your Lenten penance this year? Are you like the usual Catholic who "gives up" something, like coffee, or chocolate, or soft drinks? Or were you an above-average Catholic who "took on" something, like a new church ministry, investing some of your treasure in a new charity, or committing yourself to some spiritual reading? Of course, you all could be exceptional Catholics and do a little bit of both during Lent.

Why do I place "giving up something" in the category of the usual Catholic? Well, simply because when we give up something that has been in our lives a long time, we get cranky and moody, and no one in our lives really needs to inherit us for any length of time when are cranky or moody, when we think we are doing something good for God. Doing something good for God should be beneficial to humanity, too. I tell people to get creative with your Lenten penances. Instead of giving up coffee, maybe we should give up sugar and cream in our coffee. Instead of giving up soft drinks, maybe we should buy a few packs of our favorite, contact the activity director at the local nursing home, and go deliver them so that the elderly might be able to enjoy one or two of them, too. Each year, I try to construct something during Lent that will glorify God. It is really hard to give up much of anything as a parish priest because people love to bring sweets and other good things to the church office for us to enjoy. So building something for the church has become a tradition. This year, some of you ladies will get to see what I am building when you attend the state convention in Alexandria. I want to thank a member of the Catholic Daughters (from Gonzales, LA) who thought it was a pretty cool idea and funded this surprise construction project! If I can recommend some spiritual reading for your remaining days of Lent, I would tell you to pick up The Imitation of Christ by Thomas à Kempis. It is one of those spiritual classics that was written at a different time, and it even has some overtones of Jansenism inside. Therefore, it should not be read quickly...

Chaplain’s Message Cont.

National Regent’s Message

I would read a chapter at a time, sometimes allowing the chapter to be the meditation of prayer that day, and then moving on to the next chapter. It discusses the replacement of vices in our daily life with virtue. That is the beauty of Jesus' teachings in the New Testament--He offers us virtue-based ethics. In the Ten Commandments and the 550 laws of Moses, we hear a lot of "DO NOT do this or that" and Moses gives a penalty for breaking the laws. Jesus in proclaiming the Kingdom of God says, "Blessed are you if you DO these things" and He names a reward for doing so. There are different sets of virtues in our Catholic tradition, as well as fruits of the Holy Spirit. I find Lent to be a wonderful time to think about Jesus' virtues in light of the Jewish prophets and what they said was pleasing to God--instead of countless blood and animal offerings. During his 33 years among us, Jesus (1) possessed a chaste body, (2) had a disciplined mind, (3) demonstrated an understanding heart, (4) was a cheerful giver, and (5) showed a merciful spirit. So during this grace-filled season of Lent, it might be good to thoroughly examine your conscience in light of these virtues, and base your Lenten confession / Easter duty on how well we look like Christ and where we need to grow. I am aware that soon after the state convention, you will have a new state chaplain for the next two years. I hope to see many of you in Alexandria, and if not, please continue to pray for my mother's battle with Reynaud's Phenomenon, Sjogren's Disease and renal failure, and for me as I am called at this time in my life to be both priest to many and a caregiver to my mother. God's peace and blessings to all. Fr. Jason

Our Holy Father, Pope Francis has declared 2021 as the Year of St. Joseph, which started December 8, 2020 and will continue through December 8, 2021. St. Joseph, husband of Mary the Mother of Jesus, was an outstanding example of accepting without question, the task of raising this tiny baby who would save the world. What wonderful faith Joseph had! As health mandates continue to be enforced that do not allow courts to meet or gather to work and celebrate accomplishments, let us be more like the gentle humble servant St. Joseph. May we be more willing to accept each member as a gift for the court and accept their burdens. Can we show sisterly love for all God’s people especially those who are not like us?

The pandemic has changed so much in our lives. Missing the joyful gathering of Catholic women who share their lives, burdens and heart breaks, good times and difficult times is difficult to understand and accept. State Conventions may not be exactly as we remember from years past. Limiting the number of attendees, limiting the time for a convention from a busy weekend to a day or two, having a virtual convention, using absentee ballots for the first time and accepting a different plan, while conducting meetings, are just a few of the changes experienced this year. Good leaders are still needed to make our order the best it can be. Join together in prayer for one another. The Catholic Daughters are a power-house of prayer! Please consider accepting the call to become an officer in your court. Please consider being a District Deputy or Circle of Love Chairman. Every member has a special gift to share. Share that gift by being an officer in the local court, state court or on the state board. You will be working with some of the best women in this world. National Center on Sexual Exploitation-Credit Cards Cut Ties with Pornhub!Mastercard, Visa and Discover credit cards have cut all ties with Pornhub and will not allow their credit cards to be used on the Pornhub site. Pornhub is a pornography site that promotes the exploitation of children and women. It is one of the National Projects supported by Catholic Daughters.

Howdy, Catholic Daughters of Louisiana:

I am so sorry that I will be unable to attend the Louisiana State CDA Convention in April 2021, especially since Louisiana is one of my favorite states to visit. However, in the past year due to Covid, the visits have been few and far between. Your state officers have been spending countless hours to make this an exciting time for you, the officers and membership. So, you need to avail yourself of this great opportunity to attend and participate in the programs which are planned. I have no doubt that this convention will be a very spirit-filled, fun-filled and uplifting convention. I know you will ALL come away with a burning desire to work harder for the Catholic Daughters of the Americas in the state as a whole. This is a time to become energized and enthusiastic about the programs and goals set forth by the state officers of Louisiana for you in CDA.

Convention is a time to renew old friendships and make new friends from across the state. Take advantage of this opportunity to share your projects and programs with others and learn how others participate in the national program of the Circle of Love. Make notes and take these new ideas back to your local courts to implement. Best wishes for a very productive and informative convention.

Keep up the good works for Our Lord and His Mother. God Bless.

Louisiana State Court has chosen St. Mary’s Residential Training School as our State Philanthropy Project for the State Convention. St. Mary’s not only is a worthy project, but it is inclusive of all the Dioceses. As one of few residential facilities in Louisiana who cares for children with the most difficult diagnosis, St. Mary’s residents come from 40 parishes and an additional 8 states.

For more than 60 years, St. Mary’s Residential Training School has provided expert care for young people living with severe to profound developmental disabilities. While our campus is not in your backyard, odds are St. Mary’s is the only resource for your most vulnerable neighbors in need. St. Mary’s operates 25 homes which each contain 8 residents.

Below are items St. Mary’s could use. Their management team came up with several great ideas, but settled on the opportunity to create leisure packages for each of our group homes. They thought this would not only be very useful for their clients’ Quality of Life, but also an affordable option.

Our Lady of Sorrows has been traveling around the state from Court to Court since May 2019. We have been praying for an increase in our membership along with fervent desire to serve with joy. Our Lady will end her journey at the State Convention. It will be a lovely end to a beautiful prayerful journey. Many rosaries and prayers have been recited for our membership. I am so excited that she was in my home town recently and I was able to join the host Court to pray with Mary.

Remember she ends her journey at the State Convention. The State Board had to decide what to do with Our Lady's Statue once her journey has ended. The decision was all Courts attending who have prayed with Mary along the way will have a chance to win the beautiful Our Lady of Sorrows Statue for their Court!

Please continue praying, as many courts are still having troubles meeting and with participation. Always remember, our God is awesome, and He will take us through this. PATIENCE, FAITH and PERSEVERANCE will save us!

On another note the State Regent will be on Catholic Community Radio on March 17 at 7:48 am to talk about our Traveling Mary. Mary Queen of Sorrows Statue Inspires Local Court

Court 2741, Fr. Joseph Cazenavette, received the Traveling Mary Statue on November 5, 2020. With only a few days to have the statue, court members quickly signed up to have Mary’s Statue in their homes from a few hours to a day. Some members invited prayer groups, family, and friends to pray with them. At the November meeting, every member commented on what a wonderful experience it was. I can personally attest that a feeling of calm, serenity, and peacefulness surrounded me when Mary was in my home. At our December meeting, one of the members suggested that our Court purchase a Mary, Queen of Sorrows, statue for us to rotate around to the members who want to have Mary in their home. She even volunteered to keep track of the schedule and coordinate the activities. Another one of our members generously volunteered to pay for the Statue. Our Court is anxiously awaiting the arrival.

State Court HappeningsPROJECT RAINBOW DONATIONS

Project Rainbow is a State Project started many years ago. Courts are asked to donate at least $45 per year to support this project. The money is divided between the three entities. We have not been receiving enough to fund these projects and are asking our Courts to please add this to your budgets. If you could spare, we sincerely appreciate it if you can give more than the recommended $45. Our Project Rainbow consists of:

CDA Kid – A child from each of our seven dioceses is selected by Courts in that diocese for one year. The child is usually someone who has major health problems and financial needs. We also ask our Courts to support the child financially, with gifts or needs, and mostly with prayer.

Disaster Relief – These funds are set aside and used when the need arises. Each Court can request a donation in the amount of $300 (as long as funds are available) by contacting the State Regent with information of the Disaster, and who was affected. This is for member’s loss only.

Scholarship – The State Court gives out four Scholarships. Two are awarded to two High School Seniors who will be attending an accredited University in the amount of $1000 each. Two are awarded to two Eighth Grade Students planning to attend a Catholic High School in the amount of $500 each. The checks are written to the Student and the Schools. These are given annually.

FINANCIAL REVIEWS

Financial Reviews are held twice a year. The reason for this review of the Courts records is due to our 501c3 status. In order to protect our status, we must make sure all protocol with proper record keeping is followed.

This is done by your District Deputy. The five Court Officers should be present, along with the three auditors (appointed by the Regent). The financials and membership are reviewed.

The timeline for reviews are the Spring, April 15-May 15 and the Fall, Oct. 15-Nov. 15. A copy of the Financial Review form must be sent to National, the State Regent and the State Secretary along with a check for State Dues.

Junior Catholic Daughter NewsJCDA STATE PROJECT

The State board discussed our JCDA Groups this past term. We tried many different avenues and venues; such as, the possibility of having a State Convention, a State Retreat or some sort of activity for all groups. Covid-19 has truly impacted all of our plans. Many of the locations we reached out to could not allow the children and adults to gather. We are saddened that we could not be fruitful in our efforts, but God has another plan.

Each JCDA Court was mailed a gift from the State for each member as recognition that they are truly appreciated and needed in our organization. It is our hope that the Senior Courts were able to do a little something to recognize the girls for their JCDA Day, which was Sunday, February 21!

We hope many of these young ladies will become Senior Court members of the future and lead us to bigger and better things. May God bless all of you young ladies, your leaders, and your Senior Courts for your dedication to service and fellowship. WE DO LOVE OUR JCDA!!!

Court DevelopmentCOURT DEVELOPMENT

The signs of the times these days leave us with little hope that things will return to normal. As we read scripture, we realize “this too shall pass”. There have always been obstacles for Christians as far back as we can remember. Look at the journey of God’s people from Egypt. There were several challenges: water, food, enemies, and just all sorts of mess.

This is also true with our Courts. Many are still not meeting very often, attendance is low, and passion to serve is weakening. Things will get better, have faith. We are here to help. We are a wonderful sisterhood, who, when joined together, can achieve the impossible.

We all joined the Catholic Daughters for one reason or another. Think back to that reason and let it renew your hope and devotion to service. God calls each of us in different ways. He gifts us with talents...use those talents. Let the world know who we are and why we are here.

I ask for prayers for a few of our Courts who are on reprieve for various reasons. We promise to work diligently with them to get them back - more vibrant than ever! If it is God’s will, we will be fruitful. We will be helping some of these to do recruitment to gain new and younger members. I can tell you from experience that people are spiritually hungry; you just have to reach them where they are. You may be called upon to help us out. Please consider and join our efforts. And least, we ask all of you for prayers for our Courts in Louisiana and the nation. The struggle is real!

Thank you to all those who are working hard! We appreciate and love our CDA Sisters.

Court #100 for Louisiana!!!February 6, 2021, was a wonderful day in Gretna, Louisiana, where 26 ladies were installed and a new Court instituted, St. Cletus #2768. Special thanks to Trisha Crombie, First Vice State Regent for continuing efforts to get this Court formed. Some of the State Officers and a few District Deputies had recruited in March of 2020 and we all know what happened then. We regrouped recently, and with the help of Chaplain, Rev. Chris Zavackis, we were successful in making this happen. Congratulations to all the members and the State of Louisiana for charging forward, even in these trying times. This makes number 100 for Louisiana!

Sunday June 6

† Please remember your chaplains and local priests in your prayers and have a special thank you celebration

for them. We don’t thank our priests enough for all they do for us.

Heavenly Father, we thank you for the gift of our priest. We experience

the gift of the sacraments through them. Help them to become

instruments of Your divine grace. We ask that you guide them as they

minister to us, Your people.

Sometimes I wonder how this can truly be happening in America. The United States Senate once again voted to issue a death sentence for babies born ALIVE after failed abortions. Every single Senator is now on record for history to judge how they voted – including two Senators from Arizona and Georgia who are up for re-election next year. We need to be sure that every voter knows that these two Senators chose to vote against giving life-saving treatments to infants born alive during failed abortions.

A strong majority of Americans (77%) believe babies born alive during failed abortions should be protected under the law. Frankly, that number would be closer to 100%, if it were not for the fact that Planned Parenthood and their puppets in the mainstream media have deceived the public on the issue of abortion. Our canvassers in the field continuously find that voters simply have no idea how radically pro-abortion some elected officials have become. But that’s where you come in.

After the US Senate issued a death sentence for babies born alive during failed abortions, Pelosi’s House doubled down on their pro-abortion agenda. A sitting member of Congress said that killing a child by abortion is just as important as getting treatment for cancer.

…And after our organization called her out on her cruel statement, she fired back at us.Here’s the truth: Treating cancer saves a life. Abortion, by definition, ends a life.We MUST rein in the pro-abortion majorities in both houses of Congress.

NCOSE - 2020 Victories to Celebrate: How the Dirty Dozen List made the Internet Safer

February 9, 2020 is the global observance of Safer Internet Day. Safer Internet Day focuses on the idea that everyone plays an important role in making the internet better. We’re so thankful for all of the advocates (YOU!) who took action via our 2020 Dirty Dozen List, and brought changes to corporations! The internet is a safer place now because of you.

Going up against giant tech companies, Fortune 500 corporations, and the billion-dollar pornography industry can often be utterly overwhelming. Even the most optimistic among us can feel daunted, questioning whether any effort - big or small – can make a difference. But we assure you that YES! Collectively, we can change corporations…and we have.

In the past year, we’ve had progress with major companies like Amazon, Google, and Netflix to name a few! They adopted recommendations made by NCOSE: adjusting problematic policies, products, and platforms. These changes led to fragmentation of the porn industry’s infrastructure, resulted in refined reporting mechanisms for child sex abuse material, reduced the risk of kids being accessed by predators, stemmed sex buyers’ ability to purchase bodies for their pleasure, and minimized exposure to the harmful effects of pornography.

We hope you will join us in celebrating the victories of 2020!

Highlights from National NewsNational Quarterly Protocols

Sending Documents to the National Office: When sending documents from your court to the National Office, please follow-up with an email or phone call to be certain the document has arrived. A phone call is the very best option to check it out.

Receiving Group Emails: Group emails are many times sent to get a message out quickly with exact wording. If a reply is expected or to acknowledge that you received the group message, please use only the Reply not the Reply All. Reply All sends the message to every email listed in the group mailing. This causes mailboxes to fill up unnecessarily.

Misericordia: Please note Misericordia is no longer on our list of charities and projects. Any checks received for Misericordia at the National Office will be applied to another charity.

Updating the Store: The Store at the National Office has been so helpful in supplying goods to courts. Ordering new court robes is so much easier. Local, state, JCDA and chaplain/spiritual advisor pins, jewelry, Catholic Daughter items with our logo, recruitment tools and supplies for all courts can be ordered with a click on the computer. Gift items are also available as long as supplies last. Do you have any suggestions on items that could be added to the store inventory? Please send suggestions to any National Board member. This is our store and we want it to be useful and include items of interest to our members.

Financial Review: The semi-annual Financial Review must be conducted after March 31st by a committee of three members. The District Deputy/State Representative must be present for at least one of the twice yearly financial reviews. All court officers must be present to answer any questions by the Financial Review Committee. The review must be signed by the three members plus the district deputy/state representative. The district deputy/state representative signs only when she is present for the financial review.

Prayer in Preparation for the election of Officers

Mary, Mother of Love, the first Catholic Daughter, we ask you to grant us the grace of openness to the Holy Spirit, dynamic fidelity to the charism of Unity and Charity, and untiring devotion in the service of the Catholic Daughters.

May this period of preparation for our State Election of Officers be for us a favorable time of humility, obedience and openness to God’s will for our Court. Make each member available and open to what the Spirit wishes to accomplish in our Court. Grant that each member have the ability to respond “YES” to God as He calls her to serve Him. May, Mother of the Church and of the Catholic Daughters, Pray for Us.

March 19 St. Joseph’s Day

St. Joseph’s Day Customs & Traditions

St. Joseph’s Day is celebrated all over the world. In Sicily, participants usually wear red and build what is known as “St. Joseph’s Altar”. This table is often decorated with flowers and candles, and people place wine and foods on it that are considered lucky. Some of these lucky foods include fava beans, lemons, and foods that contain sawdust. All of these foods have symbolic meanings. Fava beans were the only things that survived a drought during the Middle Ages in Italy – which is why it is considered lucky. Breadcrumbs are worked into the recipes of the dishes because St. Joseph was a carpenter and the breadcrumbs represent sawdust. Some people place fish and seafood on the altar as well. Since this holiday occurs during lent, there are no dishes which contain meat.

Let us pray for our Mothers.

Those who are here with us and those who have gone to

their resting place. May God have mercy on

them. And let us especially

rememberOur Blessed Mother, the

true example to all.
