Principal’s News
Happy Friday Bobcat Family,
In my first newsletter, I shared that at SBCE we are not only keenly focused on academic progress but also
the safety of our student as well as their social and emotional needs. One addition we made this year to
support the ‘whole child’ is sponsoring Walk to School Days. Research shows that walking or biking to
school can significantly contribute to positive student health.

Please consider joining us as we celebrate our first SBCE Walk to School Day on the morning of Tuesday, October
16th. Additional details are noted in the flyer below. We hope you will participate with us! Buses will continue to run
for students who are not able to participate.
Congratulations to Ms. Howell and Ms. Martin (formerly Ms. Crowder) for being recognized by their peers as the
August and September ‘Stars of the Month!
Have a wonderful weekend! Bridgette M. Marques

to have their fall picture taken. Flyers and order forms were
sent home this week. Please return with your student.
Fire Prevention Week
Mark your calendars for October 7 – 13! This year, the
National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) theme is:
“Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere.”
We are excited for our PreK-2nd grade students to attend an
assembly with the JCHS Fire Department. Our 3rd-5th grade
students will be provided the opportunity to write a letter of
recognition and appreciation to our community firefighters. We
are excited for our students to learn about fire safety while also
thanking these very important members of our community.
Student Recognitions
Excitingly, we are bringing more student recognition programs
to SBCE this year, to not only directly align with our strategic
plan, but also to support our PBIS framework. Be sure to ask
your child about how their class can win the Golden Spoon
Award and Quarterly Attendance Award! We hope these
recognitions will promote ‘respectful, responsible, and ready to
learn’ cafeteria behavior and student attendance!
Upcoming Staff & Program Recognitions
We are thrilled to be celebrating Pre-K week next week,
October 1st through the 5th. Equally exciting, we will be
recognizing our fantastic custodians on Tuesday, October 2nd
for National Custodian Workers Recognition Day. Finally, on
Monday, October 22nd, we will celebrate our dedicated bus
drivers for Bus Driver Appreciation day. We are fortunate to
have so many individuals and programs to celebrate this month!
Extended Learning
For those 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students who were invited to our
Extended Learning after school program, please note that
classes begin next week. Parent pick up will be promptly at
4:30pm in the front circle. Thank you for signing your student
up for this extra learning opportunity.
Iowa Assessment – 3rd & 5th Grade
Please mark your calendars for October 22nd – November 2nd,
when our 3rd and 5th grade students will be participating in the
Iowa Assessments. While the testing window is two weeks
long, the students will only be testing on four mornings (a more
detailed schedule will be forthcoming from your child’s
teacher).
Due to testing and the need to create a quiet, secure testing
environment for our students, we are asking for no lunch
visitors from October 22nd – November 2nd. Lunch visitors are
welcome to return Monday, November 5th. Thank you for your
understanding and cooperation!

SOCKtober!
Let’s kick off SOCKTOBER! We will kick off our sock
collection on Friday, October 12th by wearing our craziest
socks to school! Did you know that socks are the least
donated items to shelters? State Bridge Crossing will be
collecting new unworn socks beginning October 15th-
October 26th.
Science Olympiad
We are excited to put together a Science Olympiad Team
again this year! Last year State Bridge Crossing made it to
the State Science Olympiad Competition in Kennesaw
Georgia! We look forward to another amazing year.
We are looking for dedicated students who will practice
before school, after school, and at home to be ready for the
Fulton County competition on March 2nd, 2019 (8:00-
4:00). If our team qualifies, we will continue on to the State
Science Olympiad Competition in May at Kennesaw State
University. Practices will be held weekly from 7:10AM –
7:35AM or 2:45PM – 3:45PM. Training times and dates
will vary depending on which events the team members are
preparing for.
All 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students are welcome to apply.
While we wish we could accept everyone who is interested,
we are limited by competition rules to 20 team members.
Applications will be reviewed by the coaching team using a
rubric. The top 20 application scores will be selected as
members of the team.
If your child is interested, please have them visit Ms.
Scheifflee for an application.
All parts of the application are due to Ms. Scheifflee by
10/3/2018. We will not accept any late applications or
applications by email (this eliminates anonymity for
scoring). Please turn in parts 1 and 2 separated (not stapled)
as this will aid with anonymity during scoring.
Please feel free to contact Ms. Scheifflee at
[email protected] if you have any questions.

Walk to School Day – Tuesday, October 16th
International Walk to School Day!
We know that your child’s safety is very important to you. That’s why we are inviting you to join us for our inaugural
International Walk to School Day on Tuesday, October 16, 2018. State Bridge Crossing Elementary is partnering with the Georgia
Safe Routes to School, Georgia Commute Options and the City of Johns Creek to take part in this very important event and will
work to ensure the safety of children traveling to and from school. By working with our partners, this program will determine the
safest routes to walk and bike to school, suggest safety improvements to those routes, develop fun ways to encourage more
children to use those routes, and recruit parents and neighbors to accompany children to school.
International Walk to School day began in 1997 as a one-day event. Over time, the event has become part of a movement for year-
round safe routes to school and a celebration – with record breaking participation – each October to remind students, parents, and
communities about the many benefits of walking or biking to school. The event raises community and global awareness about
pedestrian safety, traffic congestion, concerns for the environment and also promotes healthy behavior. This year, students and
their families will be walking, cycling, biking, skate boarding or scootering to school individually or with walking school buses.
Johns Creek City Police Department will be present to assist along the route. We encourage all students to participate. Students
who walk or bike regularly are encouraged to take their normal routes as a part of the event. Once at school, students who
participate will receive giveaways. Details for the walking school bus or buses will be forthcoming.
Hearing & Vision Screening – Tuesday, October 16th
We are looking for volunteers to help with our SBCE Hearing and Vision screenings on Tuesday, October 16th from 8:00am until
about 11am. No experience necessary! This is a fun way to interact with the children and help provide an invaluable service to our
SBCE students. There will be a short training session between 7:45am and 8am. Please sign up using the following

PTA Meeting – October 16th at 11:30 at SBCE
Our next PTA meeting will be on Tuesday, October 16th at the school. Everyone is welcome to attend. If you are not able to join,
we do post our meeting minutes on our website at http://www.sbcepta.org/ . We hope to see you there!
Box Tops – Send them in by October 17th
Our first Box Top collection will be on Wednesday, October 17th. Please send any Box Tops that you have in a baggie with your
child to school to be turned in by Wednesday, October 17th.
The Box Top box is located in the front of the school by the front office. Your child can either drop them into the box or give
them to their teacher. Make sure that the Box Tops that you send in are not expired and that the expiration date is not cut off
otherwise we cannot use them.
And if you haven't already, take a quick minute to download the Box Tops app on your phones. This is a great way to collect Box
Tops without having to cut and send them in! Once you have the app downloaded, all you have to do is Buy products with the box
top logo, Scan your receipt and then our school Earns the money! It really is as easy as 1, 2, 3!
Thank you for all of your support with the Box Tops program! This money goes towards lots of programs that the SBCE PTA
sponsors and every little bit helps!

Teacher Tailgating
PTA will be hosting a Tailgating lunch for our teachers on Friday, October 19th! Thank you, teachers, for all that you do!
Mini Grants
We are pleased to announce that your PTA memberships just granted $11,500 in mini-grants directly back to the classrooms!
How? At the beginning of every school year, the teachers apply for mini-grants to help enhance your child’s education. The
teachers will have an opportunity again after winter break for an additional $4,500, so long as we have the funds in our budget,
which is why we depend so much on PTA memberships to fund our budget. Here are some of the grants we funded this semester:
Scholastic News, Scholastic Storyworks, Scholastic Reading Counts, IXL, Flocabulary, iPads and iPad Minis and Cases, Butterfly
Life Cycle Kits, Clay and Clay Storage, Professional Development at Ron Clark Academy, Chair Pockets, Skype with an Author,
Children’s Museum in House Field Trips, Splash on Literacy, Playground Toys and Storage, Word Study Games, Whisper
Phones and Resources for Orton-Gillingham Classroom
As you can see, YOUR membership matters! Thank you, PTA members, for your support!
Family Fun Run Survey
Thank you again for participating in our parent survey. We are excited to announce that with 84% of parents voting to move
forward with Boosterthon we have started to put it in motion as a spring event. With our playground project as the focus, we have
thought it best to cancel the fun run and put all our efforts into the event in the spring. Currently we are working out dates and
will have more information soon.
Donations for the school
If you have any of the following items that you would like to donate to SBCE, please drop them off at the front office with a label
for the PTA and we will distribute throughout the school.
- Legos
- Gently used books
- Treasure Chest items
- Pet supplies for gerbils, hermit crabs and fish such as bedding, food, water bottle, toys, etc. If anyone has a 10 or
15-gallon aquarium that they would like to give, we can use one of those too!
