As for relationships, Leonardo is pretty much of an independent nature, and hisneed for relationships is somewhat limited. He can take them or leave them, butwhen he is cooking on some project, he tends not to need them, and they seldomeven come up on his radar screen. Martin: StarType #21, "The Receptive"Leonardo: StarType #35, "The Artisan"Here we are mixing Leonardo, who is represents an independent type, withMartin, a dependent type. "Dependent" means that Martin is happier and morefulfilled through relationships, while independent (Leonardo) types can be quiteself-sufficient and content on their own. This particular match-up has the potentialto be a little confusing, for the following reasons.Martin, as mentioned, is looking for a relationship where his role as a lover andcare provider will be fulfilled. He will naturally want to manage this relationship.However, Leonardo has not only the ability to assume the role of the loved one,and enjoys a lot of attention, but also has very strong care-taking abilities of hisown. Now here is a relationship with some promise, because the basic chemistry isthere, with only some minor adjustments. Martin is quite independent andprobably more self-satisfied than is Leonardo, who is not an independent type,and quite obviously is looking to be in a relationship. In that sense, he is the moreneedy of the pair, and Martin knows this and uses that fact.Martin's independence makes it appear as aloofness to Leonardo, so he mayhave to understand that this is not personal. Martin just naturally is content to bealone more that is Leonardo. That is the way it is.As for knitting a relationship together, this would involve Leonardo in the role ofprovider, the boss of it all, and Martin as the object of attention, the one Leonardodotes on. The mental connection is what holds this relationship together. They can talk,and Leonardo can more or less listen from time to time. I say "more or less"because as a type, Leonardo is pretty wrapped up in HI2S own goings on, andmay not have time or awareness of what is going on outside of HIS2 own self-absorption. This could leave Martin feeling ignored or left out, howeverunintentional it was meant.Martin is basically shy and tends to insecurity rather than too much self-confidence. Leonardo is just the opposite, quite at home in the crowd, willing andable to rub shoulders with the best of them, and generally a "Howdy, how areyou?" kind of person. Not so with Martin, who is uncomfortable when more than afew people are present, and tends to withdraw and take it all in than participate.So there you have the general idea. Leonardo is more confident, self-expressive,and aggressive, while Martin holds back and is more retiring. Martin may perhapsspend too much time in his mind, and never get a hold on the practical aspects ofhis life. He probably needs some guidance from Leonardo in these areas.
