Roles
A Junior management consultant’s role can vary from company to company. Generally, their role is to be an essential part of a project team where they support senior consultants and project managers.
Day to day jobs include
1. Collecting data and performing analysis
2. Conducting client interviews
3. Presenting up-to date results both the clients and internally to project managers and senior consultants
4. Creating focus groups and workshops for client’s employees.

Junior Management Consultants who have more experience may also be given the opportunity to lead projects. This includes:
1. Running client interviews
2. Proposing analysis
3. Managing client teams
How do I get there?
Graduates cant just walk into this job. 2 years minimum experience as a Business Analyst is required
Once you have attained the role of a Junior Management Consultant, it takes 3 years to become an associate consultant/senior consultant.
Consultants who have lots of ambition and a good record could reach up to director or partner level in 10 years!
What company should I apply for?
There are several organizations and small business you can work for
Each have their advantages and disadvantages
One of the “Big 5” Firms
These are companies that are in the top 500 global are well organized and give the opportunity for junior management consultant’s to train at the highest levels.
However, these companies involve a lot of politics and the management policies are not the greatest.
Boutique Companies
Offers Junior Management Consultants valuable access to senior consultants and partners who monitor their progress. This enables quick learning from feedback and one to one sessions.
However, these companies have smaller infrastructure and less opportunity.
What about being self employed?
Benefits
Everything is run the way you want
Enables you to take control and learn as your business grows
All the profits that you earn, are yours.
Drawbacks
After graduation it is likely you wont have much experience therefore may prove too difficult for you to start a business by yourself.
Marketing your business and carrying out consulting jobs may be too much if everything is done by yourself.
Conclusion
The choice is yours!
Be wise in what company you choose as this may have a significant impact in your long-term career.
