We are going to look at the four main things that cause sea pollution.

Plastic

Oil

Plastic is a very useful material we use for everyday items because its cheap, strong and doesn't break. However because it is usually made from fossil fuels like crude oil. It is the most harmful material to our sea animals. It can harm them by small pieces of plastic being eaten by sea animals because they can’t break it down. Also sea animals get trapped in the plastic and get hurt and die.

Oil mostly affects the sea through oil spills from a ships fuel. It affects sea animals in different ways from oil being spilled or from oil being cleaned up. It harms the sea animals because it has poisonous chemicals which sea animals breath in and the oil destroys the insulating ability of fur-bearing mammals, such as sea otters, exposing these creatures to the harsh elements more.

Sewage

Rubbish

Sewage is the waste liquids and solids which cause pollution. Also through waste water and sewage entering the water system and when it does mix together it causes the water to become contaminated. It affects sea animals particularly fish are endangered because the bacteria uses up oxygen which affects fish being able to breath and see clearly in the dark and murky waters.

Rubbish is usually disposed or abandoned on beaches, in waterways or thrown into the ocean by people. It causes so much damage to sea animals because they get entangled in the rubbish and can drown. Sea turtles are particularly endangered because they eat the rubbish which takes up room in their stomach and can cause them to suffocate.

Here are the answers to the questions you have discussed relating to the story you just watched called “All the way to the ocean”.

1. The main cause of the sea pollution in the story was from James dropping his water bottle in the storm drain along with all the other rubbish going to the sea. 2. It affects the sea animals by making them sick from having the rubbish appear in the sea which they will eat thinking its food.

3.The crane bird mentioned that the sea animals get really sick and their homes become polluted and the rubbish can get stuck in their throats.

5. They asked their teacher if they could collect rubbish at school and put it in the bins so it stops it going to the storm drains.

4. They are not aware of the harmful affects of pollution on the sea environment and think the ocean is so big it wont matter.
