Environmental problems.

Some of the environmental problems we face today, such as droughts, were known to our ancestors but are now experienced more frequently. Others are new problems, resulting from modern technology.

ACID rain

Rain has become more acidic because of the gases and fumes we release into the atmosphere when we burn fossil fuels like coal. The wind carries the air pollution from heavily industrialised countries like Britain to other countries, where it falls in acid rain. This affects.

•Water in lakes and streams : fish and plants are killed.

• Trees: leaf loss and damage.

•Soil: soil erosion occurs when rains wash away soil which use to be protected by tree roots and the leaf canopy.

•Buildings: some of the most beautiful buildings in Europe are crumbling because of the chemical reactions with acid rain and stone.

•Health: contaminated water and food lead to illness.

Pollution of rivers and lakes

This is caused by agricultural, domestic and industrial waste. Such pollution:

• Kills marine life

•Affects water quality causing health problems

•Makes rivers dirty and smelly

•Enters the food chain, and harms animals and humans.

Sea pollutionThe sea is polluted by oil slicks, the dumping of industrial and domestic waste and acid rain. Sea pollution leads to:

Toxic algae that kill marine life and contaminate seafoodDirty beachesDamage to seabirds, seals and other animals.

Modern farming methodsUsing pesticides and fertilisers on agricultural land can:Contaminate drinking water and human breast milk,

Kill wildlife.

Sea pollution

The sea is polluted by oil slicks, the dumping of industrial and domestic waste and acid rain. Sea pollution leads to:

Toxic algae that kill marine life and contaminate seafoodDirty beachesDamage to seabirds, seals and other animals

Modern farming methods

Using pesticides and fertilisers on agricultural land can:

Contaminate drinking water and human breast milkKill wildlife.

Global warming

The greenhouse gas we produce lead to global warming, which may result in:

A rise in sea level, causing flooding and the erosion of coastlines damaging homes, crops, livestock. Having an impact upon the quality of peoples lives and even putting people’s lives at risk.Changes in vegetation and an increase in the number and size of desertsChanges in migration patterns, intensifying droughts and flooding.More extreme weather events such as storms and hurricanes

Other environmental issues include

•Extinction of species through over-fishing and hunting.

•Deforestation, the destruction of rainforests leading to the loss of species and climate change.

•Air pollution, which harms vegetation and humans.

•Toxic watse, which can affect the health of those who live near disposal sites.

•GM foods, genetically modified crops, which may affect the environment and human health

•Thinning of ozone in the upper atmosphere.
