REGISTERING WITH CASTING WORKBOOK
The majority of our submissions are made electronically. Electronic submissions offer casting directors and talent agents the ability to access electronic breakdowns, submissions, sides, audition scheduling and other online services.
Please fill out your Casting Workbook profile to the best of your ability. This includes filling out the special skills section fully please check your skill level and if you have the apparatus required (i.e. tennis racket, ice skates, etc.)
You will need to take some time to acquaint yourself with Casting Workbook. We will use the messaging section to send you CRITICAL information regarding your auditions. If you have technical questions please contact Casting Workbook or look under “HELP” (tab on the top of your profile) for further information. The HELP tab has numerous Q & A’s as well as tutorial videos to assist you.
If you have a pre-‐existing account with Casting Workbook you will need to call them to be listed with PRINCIPALS talent. www.castingworkbook.com phone: 604.205.5107
BREAKDOWN SERVICES/ACTORS ACCESS
This is another system we use to submit you for jobs. The agents pay for the use of this system not the actors. If you wish to add your demo or additional headshots to this system you can pay a fee and do so. We will take care of all administration on this site on your behalf. http://www.actorsaccess.com/
**If you have a demo reel please discuss uploading of this as well as SLATE SHOT with your agent. There are benefits to doing so, it may help to secure additional auditions.
AUDITIONS
Once the registration is complete, we have all forms on file and you are up and running on Casting Workbook we will begin submitting you for appropriate projects. When we have secured an audition for you we will contact you (via: phone, text, email, etc) and notify you of all the details of the audition. After reviewing the audition notice and materials (this will be sent to you via email or thru Casting Workbook – Casting Workbook does send an email notice as well) you must immediately confirm with the agency that you will be attending the audition. Please confirm your apt ASAP, casting will often require that confirmations are in before the end of the business day (6:00pm). If we cannot reach you by the morning of the day of the audition (9am) your appointment will be cancelled and you will be removed from the agency roster.
REGRETTING (not being available) an audition is unacceptable behaviour. We should know your schedule ahead of time and expect that you are available unless otherwise noted. We hold our roster up to a high standard to keep our actors reputations where they need to be.
Remember that when we are calling out auditions we most likely have a few to call out. If you have questions regarding the audition itself please feel free to ask but if you are interested in talking further about your career or something else that can wait please call back or email us at another time or ask if when have time to talk about it first.

Being Prepared:
Check your phone and emails whenever possible, last minute auditions come up frequently and are a great opportunity to get in the door.
Consider setting up a new email account that you use just for your career it will help you to keep record of all your past auditions.
Keep your headshots & resume in your car for last minute auditions (change of clothes, make up, etc) is also a great idea.
Create an Audition Log Book. Keep records of whom you auditioned for, the name of the role, what you wore etc. This is very helpful when it comes to callbacks as they can be a few weeks after your original audition.
Take a headshot and resume to EVERY audition. No exceptions.
If you have a CONFLICT (commercial running in the same region for a similar competitive product) please advise your agent immediately.
CHECK ALL DATES when you receive your audition and be sure that you are available or can make yourself available for ALL callback and shoot days. If there are any conflicts, let your agent know immediately.
Before asking for a time change for an audition, please EXHAUST all other options. Rearranging audition times is time consuming and disruptive to the Casting Director and they are more likely to cancel the audition rather than accommodate a time change.
If you are UNSURE about anything regarding your audition please re read all materials sent to you if you cannot find the information you are looking for contact your agent for clarification.
KNOW YOUR LINES (Be OFFBOOK) do not attend your audition without having your lines MEMORIZED fully or if there are no lines be sure you have looked at all the information sent to you to be sure your wardrobe is correct and you are as prepared as possible. Look for clues about the scene in notes and breakdown.
Audition Protocol:
BE EARLY!! They change things last minute, arrive a few minutes early to make sure that the sides are as prepared and have not changed. This will also allow you to run your lines a few last times or with an assigned scene partner when applicable. We live in a city continuously under construction; Traffic and parking is not the responsibility of Casting always allow for extra time.
BE QUIET!! Respect Casting, Directors, Producers and your fellow actors. You don’t want to be in an emotional scene in the casting room while hearing someone in the waiting room talking about their weekend plans.
TURN OFF YOUR CELL PHONES.
FILL OUT ALL FORMS. Make note of any dates that are a problem (discuss this with your agent beforehand).
Be COURTEOUS and FRIENDLY. You are representing PRINCIPALS talent as well as yourself. When you have completed your audition say “Thank You” and get going. Don’t loiter; Be professional. If you want to wait for someone wait outside, chatting in the waiting room is not acceptable.

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION:
Please read thru our Newsletters each month when you receive them, it is frustrating to get a phone call regarding a question that was already answered in the newsletter. If you are the parent of a child on the roster, please have your child (age dependent) read the Newsletter, they need to take some responsibility in this journey too. We as your agent work for you; we will do whatever we can to secure you auditions that you fit. We will always provide you with all the information we have in regards to projects and your auditions, if anything is unclear or you are unsure, always ask. Our job is to ensure you are paid fairly, negotiate your contracts and assist in managing your career.
BOOKING OUT – This means you are going to be unavailable for a day or period of time. Please let us know as soon as possible so we don’t waste the casting directors’ time submitting you for jobs that you are unavailable for. Please advise us a minimum of THREE DAYS in advance before leaving and please email the information to your agent. Please take previous auditions (call backs & shoot dates) into account.
CHANGE OF PERSONAL INFORMATION – If you change your address, phone number, email, etc., it is important that you provide us with the new information immediately. If a cheque is sent to a previous address you will be responsible for any cancelled cheque fees.
RESUME -‐ Be sure it is current and updated. You wouldn’t hand out an old business card from 5 years ago from another company with out of date information treat your Resume the same. Your Resume should be on PT letterhead and the PDF version we have sent you, not printed off of Casting Workbook.
SIZES – Please take a moment to look at the example CASTING FORM EXAMPLE (pg. 15) you will fill these out at almost all Commercial Auditions. Please be aware of your sizes and have them handy at auditions. If necessary make yourself a little cheat sheet with all sizes and take to your auditions (or put this in your LOG BOOK). It will only impress casting with how organized and professional you are. Nobody likes the guy/girl wasting everyone’s time trying to sort out his or her sizes.
HEADSHOT – Please be sure this is up to date. Again, no outdated business cards (see above)! Your headshots should be 8x10 formatted. The industry standard is ROCKET REPRO www.rocketrepro.com. A headshot printed at Walmart does not represent a professional. Be sure to discuss with your agent before taking new headshots, make sure you look like your headshot.
AUDITIONS – Look like a STAR!! This is a job interview, LOOK YOUR BEST! Wardrobe that is appropriate as well as hair and makeup. This is key and often forgotten. You may want to consider coaching for larger auditions to take your performance to the next level.
CASTING DIRECTORS – Remember CD’s are there to do their job, bring in the right people for the right roles. They really want you to succeed and do well in the room, if you look good they look good. Always be professional, courteous and efficient in your dealings with them. Please NEVER contact a CD directly, always go thru your agent if you are running behind or need information regarding your audition.
SIDES – Another word for your Script. Always have them MEMORIZED (be “off book”). These are CONFIDENTIAL, do not post, share or distribute these anywhere.
6
SOC: Silent on Camera. Term used in commercials where performers have no lines.
COMMERCIALS – As a rule of thumb we recommend you take Background work on commercials if it is offered to you (often on your sign in forms there will be a box you can check regarding this). Background in commercials is much different to Film & TV and the chance of being upgraded to a larger role is high. Your agent will discuss with you if you are requested.
FILM & TV AUDITIONS – If you have an audition for a show that is currently running. Watch a few episodes online to get a feel for the show. Research who the director & producer is also, the internet is a vast resource and knowledge can set you apart.
TAPINGS – If we have agreed to tape you at the office for a project please be professional. Have your sides (script) MEMORIZED, be dressed and ready to and of course BE ON TIME. We want you to be comfortable in the office but please save rehearsals for home. If you want to bring a reader please do otherwise one of the agents will be happy to read for you.
CALL BACKS – Your second audition. Usually this is a good sign; they were happy with what you did and want to see you again. Please be sure to take an additional Headshot & Resume even though they may not take it, and try to wear the same thing or something similar to the first audition unless otherwise told.
RESUME UPDATES – If you need changes made to your resume please email your agent with ALL appropriate information. The name of the project (including episode name & #), Size of Role, Name of Role, Director, Network, Production Company etc.
CALL BEFORE YOU STOP BY – If you need to drop off or pick up items from the agency please give us a call to set up a specific time. We schedule many tapings and meetings every day and don’t want anyone’s time to be wasted or their appointments disrupted.
SIGN IN & OUT – On any job you work on or audition for please be sure that you SIGN IN & OUT. Often this is only on UNION Jobs but some NON UNION jobs also use sign out sheets, be sure to check if you are unsure.
PINNED, SHORTLISTED, ON HOLD – It doesn’t mean you have booked the job but you are one step closer these are all the same thing. If you are told any of the following by your agent it means that casting is interested in you. Often more than one client is put on HOLD for each role. If another client also wanted to book you, we would first call your HOLD to see if they would like to book or release you. You will be advised if you are BOOKED (got the job) or RELEASED (they have chosen another person) While on HOLD (Shortlisted or Pinned) it is expected that you will keep your appearance the same, if you have a beard don’t shave, and no cutting or colouring of your hair. They will be expecting to book the person they met in the room, not the shaved short haired blond you have become.
WARDROBE – Someone from wardrobe will call you directly once you have booked a job to set up a time for you to come and try on clothing for the job. Please be sure to provide wardrobe with accurate sizing information if requested. They will give you a time and place for a fitting. Please make note of this information as you are the only one that has it, this information is not passed onto your agent. Wardrobe fittings are often one or two days before shooting.
7
CALLTIME -‐ Once you have booked you will receive a CALL TIME. Someone from Production normally one of the AD’s (Assistant Director’s) will call you provide you will your Call time and further information. They will let you know when, where and how if they are in a difficult area to reach. Please again make note of all of this information and get a contact name and number in case of emergency. Again your agent is not given this information. If they have wrapped late the call may come as late as 8pm and sometimes later. If you have not heard from anyone by 9pm the day before you are scheduled to be on set, get in contact with your agent.
ON SET ETIQUITTE – ZERO TALKING! Mic and Camera equipment is VERY sensitive if you can see ANY Camera’s, etc you can be heard and picked up on sound equipment… Be careful what you do say! ;) Chat with your friends on breaks or in your trailer. KNOW YOUR PLACE there is a hierarchy on set. Generally you don’t approach Producers/Director’s/DOP’s etc unless they approach you. It is a temptation to do so to promote yourself but it will give you a bad rep on set which will translate and result in you not booking as frequently. SMILE, STAY POSITIVE, BE PROFESSIONAL & RESPECTFUL and do what is asked of you. Moms & Dad’s please be aware STAGE PARENT is a negative term. Your job is to be there but be as unobtrusive as possible. You need to be able to see and hear you child on set but please be aware of where you are standing and try to stay out of the way. Please be aware of your child’s needs and bring them up politely if need be. Everyone is busy and some things may get missed, ensure your child gets to the bathroom before heading to set as some kids get embarrassed to admit they have to go once there. BE AWARE and PREPARED, above all else ENJOY AND HAVE FUN! This is what you have worked so hard for.
NON UNION JOBS – We will invoice Non-‐Union Jobs on your behalf. The agency will issue the invoice and request payment be sent to our office. Please keep in mind that Non-‐Union jobs are not regulated by a union so payment arrival time can vary from project to project. Most jobs are paid within 30-‐45 days. We as your agent/agency will deal with invoicing. If you are a Union member you cannot work on Non-‐Union jobs
UNION JOBS – If you are Non-‐ Union you will be required to pay a permit fee (your agent will give you more information at the time of booking), the agency will pay this fee on your behalf and remove from your cheque once it is received. You will be asked to sign a contract on set. Please be sure that the agency information is stated so we can accept payment on your behalf. If anything is unfamiliar please call your agent from set.
PAYMENT – When a client books a project through the agency the payment must be sent and processed through the agency. A cheque will be issued minus our commission fee and applicable taxes and sent to you within 5 business days of receipt. Please be sure you keep all receipts issued to you by PRINCIPALS talent you will need these for your taxes. Please contact an accountant if you have questions related to your taxes (write offs, taxes owing, etc), you are not employed by Principals talent.
GST – If you currently have a GST # please be sure this is provided when you submit your start up package. If you obtain a GST # while working with Principals please provide us with the details immediately. If you have further questions about your GST#’s please consult your accountant.
CHEQUES – If at any point you do receive a cheque from production please notify your agent and mail to the agency. Your cheques will be issued through PRINCIPALS talent. If the cheque is not from us please do NOT cash.
8
CONTRACTS – When you are on set you will often be asked to sign a contract. Please be sure that all your information is correct and that the agency information is also there. They will always contact the agency and not the performer. If you are uncomfortable or the information is different on your contract to what was discussed with your agent please call your agent from set before signing.
WRAPPED – This is the term for your time on set being completed. Once you have completed your time on set please be sure to let us know how the experience was for you. Please also send us an email with your time if you worked any overtime or numerous days. This will help us in being sure all payments are correct.
SOCIAL MEDIA -‐ Please find us on social media, we will post helpful tips, and general industry info, it’s a great way to stay connected. Please also be aware of your ONLINE profile. This is key to the industry so be very careful what you post and when, remember you never know which director, producer, or casting director is looking at you page!
SLATE -‐ If you are asked to slate you will need to state your full name & agency clearly. Sometimes they will ask you for some brief information about yourself and your age. Be polite, do as you are asked and if they say brief.. keep it short! ;)
AFTER YOU HAVE WORKED – You wrapped your first day… Now what? Send an email or call your agent, let them know how the day went. It is always ideal to send your agent an email with your hours for each day on set. This will help them to follow up to be sure everything is paid out correctly.
AUDITION LOG BOOK – If you are serious about this (or even if you just want to dabble) this is by far the most important tool you will have. Keep track of EVERY audition, who you saw, when you saw them, what it was for, how it went, what you wore, etc. etc… When you get called back you know exactly what to wear and be able to jog your memory on any notes they gave you in the room!
There are additional resources on our website, please take a moment to look over these at your earliest convenience. www.principalstalentcom
IF YOU DON’T KNOW – JUST ASK US! We are here to help. We are excited to be working with you and want to assist you in succeeding. If you are unsure of something get in touch, you know where to find us.
The most important rule of is all to have fun! If you are aren’t enjoying it, it will show!
BREAK A LEG!
