2At-Risk Afterschool Meal & Snack Program and Summer Food Service ProgramBenefits to Families & Children:Healthy Nutrition: Meals meet USDA nutrition guidelines, providing a well-balanced, healthy meal; an invaluable resource for families.

Enrichment/Educational Activities: Additional learning activities and programs keeping children engaged.

Benefits to the Community: Safe Places for Children: Programs offer safe, supervised environments during out-of-school-time hours and in the summer, when many children may be left alone.

Benefits to Sponsors:Sustainable Funding: Reimbursement funding is guaranteed from year to year as part of a federal USDA program, saving sponsors thousands of dollars in food costs.

TheAt-Risk Afterschool Meal & Snack Program and Summer Food Service Program are USDA reimbursement programs designed to give school age children and youth in low-income areas a nutritional boost and involve them in supervised activities that are safe, fun, and educational during the school year and summer. For the At-Risk Afterschool Meal & Snack Program, enrichment or educational activities are a requirement to operate the Program. Though not required for Summer Food Service Program, it is still highly recommended to offer enrichment or education activities as it increases participation at your site, making your program more sustainable.Currently in Oregon, 53% of school-aged children are eligible for the free and reduced price lunch program, meaning their families income falls under 185% of the FPG and one quarter of our children have experienced food insecurity, according to the USDA Census data.

Without access to nutritious meals, children experience more difficulty learning and socializing and are sick more often. These USDA meal reimbursement programs are providing a vital service to Oregon s children by combining learning opportunities along with the nutrition needed to keep them energized and focused.
