Since Being Matched in Philadelphia in

2004, Big Sister Alene has taken an interest in, and been

supportive of, everything her Little Sister Alia does. “When I

first started crocheting, she asked me to teach her so we could

do it together,” she recalls. Alia’s favorite memory with Alene

was at her Sweet 16 party. “My Big Sister was so scared to get

up and dance, but after I got her on the floor, she danced all

night.”

Funny to think about, considering Alene helped a once shy

Alia come out of her shell. “Before I met my Big Sister, I

was very timid. Now, I’m comfortable talking to people and

making others feel comfortable. Without her, I don’t think I’d

be as outgoing or curious as I am now.”

The Big and Little have developed a high level of trust with

each other over the years. “She’s been very open and honest

with me, and I know I can talk to her about anything,” Alia

said. “If I’m having problems with a friend, she’ll listen and

offer advice. But I know I can also turn to her if I just need to

vent. She’s very helpful.”

Academically, Alene helped prepare her Little Sister for

a bright future. “She’s taught me how to write essays and

magazine articles for school. She’s written me letters of

recommendation and helped me get into my performing arts

high school, and she’s going to help me get into my dream

college,” said Little Sister Alia. The now 18-year-old Little

Sister has big plans for the future. She hopes to attend

Arcadia University and major in elementary education and go

on to teach English or Spanish.

Guided by their Big Brothers

Big Sisters mentors, children in

our programs are overcoming

the sizeable odds stacked

against them...

Dear Friends,

Your support last year helped us make a significant positive impact throughout our region – an impact with a tremendous rippling effect.

Together we positively impacted education because when children are mentored in our programs, they attend school more frequently and are more engaged when they are there.

Your support helped our mentors provide a respite for single-parent households and helped improve parental trust which positively impacts families.

Thanks to your support, thousands of children were mentored in our program and our data tell us they are less violent and less likely to engage in delinquent behaviors which impacts neighborhoods and our economy.

As a donor and volunteer supported organization, we could not make such a positive impact in our region without your support, and so on behalf of Big Sister Alene, Little Sister Alia and the more than 7,000 children and adults we served last year, thank you.

This publication outlines the impact we made in 2011, how we achieved it and who helped us along the way.

We are especially grateful for your continued support and investment which made this all possible.

Thank you,

Marlene L. OlshanChief Executive Officer

Last Year, we served more than 7,000 children and adults in professionally supported one-to-one mentoring relationships across Southeastern PA. Big Brothers Big Sisters mentors are friends, guides and role models, not tutors, teachers or parental substitutes. They provide support, encouragement and advice while helping to broaden the child’s horizons, experiences and interests, ultimately helping them develop the necessary skills to be “fully prepared” to succeed as adults.

The Nation’s Leader in quality, one-to-one youth mentoring, Big Brothers Big Sisters received praise for its effective mentoring model that leads to positive and measurable youth outcomes for children who face adversity, as well as for its organizational leadership and community outreach. Big Brothers Big Sisters’ first place ranking was the result of recommendations from 88 national at-risk youth experts with an average of 19 years of experience in the field. These experts looked at nonprofit organizations that worked with children they considered to be “at-risk,” including some involved with the foster care or the juvenile justice system; runaways and homeless youths; children who have dropped out of school or are at-risk of not graduating; and teen parents.

First Ever Nationwide Big Brothers Big Sisters Youth Outcomes Report The 2011 Big Brothers Big Sisters Youth Outcomes Survey conducted by Public/Private Ventures shows “statistically significant” improvement in six of eight outcomes measures for BBBS-mentored youth, including: social acceptance, parental trust, scholastic competency, educational expectations and attitudes towards risky behaviors like smoking, drug use and skipping school, among others.

For Nearly 100 Years we have matched children facing adversity with rigorously screened and professionally supported adult volunteers in one-to-one mentoring relationships designed to expand horizons for children and change the trajectory of their lives. Each time we match a child with a volunteer mentor, we start something incredible: a one-to-one relationship built on trust and friendship that can blossom into a future of unlimited potential.

• Two years in a row, 88% passed all their classes

• Two years in a row, 97% advanced to the next grade

• Two years in a row, 85% had zero unexcused absences from school

Youth with Big Brothers Big Sisters MentorsAre Less Likely To:

How We Created ImpactStudies have shown that children of prisoners are upwards of six times more likely than other children to be incarcerated at some point in their lives. While research on the specific challenges faced by children of incarcerated parents is still in its relatively early stages, studies suggest that they suffer from a particular form of grief and loss that comes from having a parent who

is alive, yet unavailable. It can be difficult for children to find motivation to make good decisions when they do not have adults in their lives who are similar to them, setting examples and demonstrating the path to a healthy and fulfilling adulthood. Last year we served 547 children with an incarcerated parent.

Mentoring Children of Prisoners

Beyond School Walls is a unique version of Big Brothers Big Sisters’ one-to-one youth mentoring program where companies give back to the community by hosting children from a nearby school at their corporate office. The children meet in the workplace with an employee volunteer mentor during their lunch hour, typically every other week. BBBS SEPA analyzes student data at the end of the school year to evaluate the impact of the Beyond School Walls program. 550 students (Littles) from schools throughout Southeastern Pennsylvania were matched with volunteer employee mentors (Bigs) at 15 corporations during the 2010/2011 school year.

College Bigs Exposing children facing adversity to the possibilities of a college education, more than 625 local college students mentored children last year as part of our College Bigs program – the largest in the nation. College students at La Salle University, Philadelphia University, Temple University, University of Pennsylvania, Ursinus College and Widener University met weekly with their Littles at their school or on the college campus.

• At Fairhill Elementary School, 51% of the student population is chronically truant (10 or more unexcused absences).

• Every single student in the Beyond School Walls program reduced their unexcused absences after being matched with a mentor.

• Overall, Littles decreased their absences 19%.
