  • New Beginnings…

offers you the opportunity to regain direction and passion in your life by deepening your relationship with God our Father.

Discover how to make the best use of your God-given talents, at home, work, in the community and at church.

New Beginnings was created to assist all of us ; young & old, active & inactive (yes we mean you) in discerning how to fully realize the unique person that God has called us to be.

“New Beginnings gave us the opportunity to reflect and to explore our faith. Being a Catholic shouldn’t mean just attending Mass on Sunday.

We were able to examine our strengths to see how we

should actually live out our faith in our daily lives: in

our home, in our parish, and in our community.

Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time There has been much analysis about the recent financial crisis that has

affected the world economy. The situation has been blamed on a variety of factors, including easy credit, bad mortgages, lack of savings, and

speculation. One area that has gotten particular scrutiny by regulators has been the clever financial instruments that were devised to lure investors

seeking higher returns. Things like mortgage-backed securities and credit default swaps were supposed to provide guaranteed returns even in a down

market. Instead, these very instruments were some of the causes of the market's downfall.

Being financially clever can often get a person a good job. But it doesn't always last. We see that in the parable of the steward who was

squandering his master's resources. Like Treasury agents from the FDIC swooping down on an insolvent bank, the master in this week's Gospel lands full force on the steward who must now give an account of his

actions. His approach is to ingratiate himself with his master's debtors in hopes that they will take him in. It is much like the approach of some

financial whiz kids who, after the collapse of some of the riskiest investment strategies, have come up with new ways to make money.

Jesus reminds his followers whom they really serve. We need to be honest and trustworthy with the things of this world, even though in the end they amount to nothing. When we are, then we can be trusted with the true wealth, that of eternity. For many people, the financial crisis and job loss has been a great burden. Some have used the occasion to re-focus their

values and discover what truly matters. The steward in the Gospel threw his lot in with those who would give him an easy way out of his corrupt

situation. Our stewardship of all that God has given us requires that we be faithful to Christ in all that we do.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE During an Army war game a commanding officer’s jeep got stuck in the mud. The C.O. saw some men lounging around nearby and asked them to help him get unstuck. "Sorry sir," said one of the loafers, "but we’ve been classified dead and the umpire said we couldn’t contribute in any way." The C.O. turned to his driver and said, "Go drag a couple of those dead bodies over here and throw them under the wheels to give us some traction."

Red Mass for the Legal Community All members of the Legal Community are invited to attend the first annual Gary Diocese Red Mass, an ancient tradition which got its name from the red robes worn by the priest and judges who attended Mass together at the annual opening term of Court. Today the Red Mass brings judges, lawyers, and law professionals together to reflect and seek inspiration from God to guide them in the coming year's efforts. People of all faiths are welcome.

CATECHETICAL SUNDAY Today, Sunday, September 19, 2010 is Catechetical Sunday. We celebrate, today, those who serve our parish community in a special way as catechists — teachers of the faith. At one of our Masses, we will call forward all of our catechists and recommission them for another year of serving the Lord in our classrooms both in our parish school as well as in our parish religious education program. Our catechists are very important people since they stand in the classroom and serve as living examples of people of faith. However, it is awfully difficult to teach the faith if the faith is not being lived on a daily basis in the home. That is why we remind all parishioners that we are all catechists. We teach the faith by living the faith. If a catechist in our classroom attempts to teach about the virtue of honesty but the student sees dishonesty at home, that student will learn that dishonesty is the way to go. If, however, a catechist teaches about the virtue of honesty and the student lives in a home where honesty is cherished and promoted, the catechist will help to emphasize what is being taught in the home. So, while we honor our catechists today, we realize that none of us are “off the hook.” We all must teach the faith by what we say and by what we do. Do the right thing today. God bless you.

Priests and deacons have served the Diocese of Gary more than fifty years. Others have served in the territory that is now the Diocese of Gary. Please pray for those men who have been called to God and whose anniversaries of death are this week: September 22: Msgr. John J. Charlebois (2009) September 23: Rev. Joseph P. Murphy, SCJ (1977) September 24: Deacon David Brown (1997)

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS

RCIA classes will run every Tuesday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. (8:30 p.m. is the latest that we go. Often we are finished by 8:00 p.m.) in the Conference Room by

the Parish Office. (Please note that this is a change in location. In the past, we used to meet in the Solar Room.) There will be inquiry sessions this Tuesday, September 21st at 7:00 p.m. and next Tuesday, September 28th. These sessions give you an opportunity to fill out a registration form, telling us about yourself. You also pick up the text book and syllabus for the year. You only need to attend one of the two inquiry sessions. The regular sessions begin Tuesday, October 5th.

Who is welcome? † Anyone who is not Catholic and who wishes to find out

more about the faith. † Any Catholic who may have been baptized but never

received any other Sacraments of Initiation. † Any Catholic who has a minimal understanding of the

faith and wishes to know more. † A very active Catholic and who wishes to share his or her

faith with others. Circle the dates on your calendar, come to the Parish Office, and find out what it is all about! If you would like to be a part of the RCIA Team, please call Fr. Mike or Fr. Rick.

    Living Stewardship

The Gospel today is teaching us to be faithful stewards, recognizing that we are caretakers, not owners of material

goods. We have to choose whether we are going to serve God or wealth. We can’t do both. Jesus wants us to see that the real

enemy of discipleship is not unbelief, but laziness— the constant postponing of full commitment to the life of faith and

what it calls us to be and do.

Respect Life Corner No, it's not Lent yet!

40 Days for Life begins on September 22nd. Forty Days for Life is a nationwide movement of peaceful prayer

and fasting, to stop the killing of God’s children in the womb. ♦ We are all encouraged to bravely take some time to stand and

pray at the abortion clinic in Merrillville at 8645 Connecticut St. with other sincere people, at a time of your choice when the clinic is open (Monday -Saturday from 7:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m.).

We Can Make a Difference!!... ♦ If you cannot make it to the abortion clinic, you can privately

fast and pray for an end to this widespread horrific practice of the taking of innocent human life...

♦ Spread the word every way possible to get others to join you in the 40 Days for Life...
