Q&AWITHDIRECTORMAXWINKLERQ:HowdidyoufirstbecomeinvolvedinFLOWER?Whatdrewyoutotheproject?A:TheoriginalscriptforFLOWERwassenttomebyRoughHouse,whohasmadesomeofmyfavoritemoviesandtelevisionshowsovertheyears,soIwasimmediatelyexcited.Evenbetter,ithadcometomewithadisclaimerofsortsfrommyagent.Hesaid,“Look,thiswasascripteveryonereallylovesbutdon’tgettooattachedbecauseit’sanimpossiblemovietomake…”Ofcourse,thatonlymademewanttosayyesbeforeIevenreadthething.ThefirsttimeIsatdowntoreadFLOWER,Iwaskindofflooredbyit.Itfeltlikesomethingfromthe80s’—likeRIVER’SEDGEorOVERTHEEDGE—somethingyouroldersiblingwouldsneaktoyouonVHSandtellyounottoshowanyone.Butthethingis,thosemovieswerereallyalwayscenteredaroundmaleprotagonists.YouhadTomCruiseinRISKYBUSINESSorPatrickDempseyinLOVERBOY.WhatIlovedimmediatelyaboutFLOWERisthatEricaVandrossisacharacterthatyoudon’tgettoseethatoften,apartwrittenforafemalethatweusuallyseewrittenformalecharacter.Shejustfeltsohonestandmessytomeandreallysodifferentfromthiscommontropewehavecometoseeasthe“manicpixiedreamgirl.”ShewaslikeonepartTravisBicklefromTAXIDRIVERandonepartMiafromFISHTANK.Aseventeen-year-oldgirlwhoisdoingeverythinginherpowertofeelsomesemblanceofcontrolinherlife,becauseshefeelsshehasnone.Beyondthat,Erica’semotionaljourneytappedintoallthethemesthatIloveinmoviesaboutadolescence:therecklessnessofyouth.Wehavenoideawhoweareyet,andwe’resoscaredofshowinganyonerealvulnerability,sowegotothesegreatlengthsinordertomaskourpain,andanxiety,andsadness,andwedon’tletanyonein.Q:TellusabitabouttheconceptandstorybehindFLOWER.A:Wealwayssawtheuniverseofthemovieas:whatwouldamovielooklikestarringthekidsthatwerejusttoofuckedup,orweird,ortooscreweduptobeinaJohnHughesmovie,theonesyouwouldn’tevenseeunderthebleachers.Or,whatit’slikeforthekids,theR-ratedkids,intheAmblinuniverse—theunseenkidsinthemoviesthatIgrewupwithandobsessedoverlikeE.T.orTHEBREAKFASTCLUB.Andthesekidsaredealingwithsimilarissuesofalienationandfeelingdisconnectedwiththeirparents—issuesthataren’tdifferentfromtheotherkidsatschool—buttheyjustwearitalittle…differently.InFLOWER,allofErica’sbravadocruisingaroundtheSanFernandoValleyasaself-appointedvigilantetothewrongedisherwaytofendofftheintensefeelingsofabandonmentandfeelsomecontrolinherlife.It’swhatwedoaskids,wesortofmaskwhat’sreallygoingonbyaccentuatingquirksorrelyingonpersonalitytraitsinsteadoftacklingtheinfiniteproblemsofbeinghuman.There’ssomethingsortofbeautifulaboutthemovie.It’saboutthislossofinnocence,butinaway,it’salsoaboutthegainingofinnocence.Inthebeginningofthestory,Erica’ssoconfidentwithideathatsheiscapableofdealingwiththeseverybig,veryadultthings,butwelearn,asthemoviegoeson,thatshe’sinnowayequippedtodealwithalotofthisstuff.Ericaparadesaround,takingonotherpeople’scauses,butshe’sunabletoconfrontherownissuesthatshekeepsburieddeep,deepdown.

Q:WhatwasyourexperienceshootingthisfilmandworkingwiththecastandcrewtobringFLOWERtolife?A:Ourfirstorderofbusinesswhenwestartedassemblingtheteam—andthiswasreallyimperativebecausethisisafemaledrivenstorydealingwithsomeverysensitivesubjectmatter,andI’mthis32-year-oldguydirectingthis—wastosurroundmyselfwithasmanygreatwomenandasmuchpowerfulfemaleenergyaspossible.ThelastthingIwantedwastobeshootingtheseintimatescenesandhavelikeabunchofmeninjeanshortsonset.Thatwasaveryimportantpartoftheprocessforallofusearlyon.Intheend,wehadalmostallfemaledepartmentheads.Frommycinematographer,CarolinaCosta,whowasreallymypartnerinthis,tomyfirsteditor,SarahBethShapiro,productiondesignerTriciaRobertson,MichelleThompson,ourwardrobedesigner,andMartyGo,thelineproducer.ThefinalpersonwehiredtobeonsetwasCarolineGoldfarbwhoisajustbrilliantwriter(@theofficialseanpennonInstagram)andartist,andIwantedherenergyonsetforwritinganddesign.Then,itwasreallyaboutfindingErica.RichDeliawasourcastingagentandhadcastoneofmyfavoritemoviesofthepastfewyears,SHORTTERM12.Inthatfilm,hecastpeoplewhodidn’tlooklikeactors,butweresuchtalentedyoungkidsthatfelttotallyauthenticandtruthful.ForEricaandFLOWER,wewerelookingforsomethingsimilarandmust’vereadahundredactressesuntil,oneday,withoutanywarning,ZoeyDeutchsentinaself-tape.Iwasworkingwithmyco-writerMattSpiceronthescriptatthetime,writinginarestaurant,soIputinmyheadphonesandwatchedthisperformance.Iremembershewaseatingchipsonthetape(she’salwayseatingwhenshe’sactinglikeWarrenBeattyorsomething),anditbecameimmediatelycleartobothSpicerandmyself:Zoeyisthepersonwho’sgoingtobeplayingthispart.ShewasbetterthanthebestversionEricaIhadinmymind.Then,wefoundDylanGelulaandfellinlovewithher,andMayaEshet,whowehadneverseenbeforeandwhokindofblewusallawayaswell.Thethreegirlsreadtogetherandgotalongsowell.Overall,productionwasreally,reallyquick,onlyaboutsixteendays.Everyonereallyhadtobepreparedsowecouldmovequickly,butwithouteverfeelingthepressureofbeingrushed.Becauseofthenatureofthismovieandthescript,Iwantedeveryonetohavealotoffreedomovertheirdialogueandwhattheycouldsayandwhattheycoulddo.Iwantedeveryonetoputthingsintotheirownwordsandreallyfeelownershipoverit.Therewasalotofimprovisationonthesetandfreedomtotrythingsout,makemistakesandseewhathappens.Q:Howdidyoucapturethelocationofthefilm?Didyouuseanyspecialtechniqueswhenshooting?A:Thoughthescriptoriginallywasn’tsetwithaspecificplaceinmind,IknewthatmypersonalconnectiontothismoviewasthesuburbsofLosAngeles.IhadgrownupintheSanFernandoValleyandlovedtheroleit’splayedincountlessmoviesovertheyearsaboutteenswithalittletoomuchtimeontheirhands.Infact,alotoftheplacesweshotinwereplaceswheremyfriendsandIhadriddenourBMXbikes.Therewerenosets.Itwasallshotonreallocations,neighborhoodsfromResedatoPorterRanchtoSunValleystillfilledwiththesametrackhousesfromthe1970’s.Itjusthasaproductionvalueandcharacterandemotionthatcan’treallybematched.Fromthere,itwasimportanttomycinematographer,Carolina,andIthateverysinglethingwedidwithcamerawouldonlybetohelpcharacterorstory.That’sit.Therewasaruleaboutnoshowingoff,

nothingtoofancy.Weneverwantedthecameratobedistractingwhichreallyhelpedwiththesimplicityofthestory.AnytimeeitherofuswouldstarttoflyoffthehandleandpitchoutourGOODFELLASshot,theotheronewouldstepinandremindusaboutourrulesforthefilm.ItshouldalwaysbeinErica’sperspective,becauseit’sherstory,andwealwaysreallywantedtobejustastruthfultothataspossible.Forthelook,thewarmthyougetfromshootinginahundreddegreeplussummerheatintheValleyendsupinformingyourframewhetheryouwantittoornot,sowefullyembracedthat.AvailableandnaturallightwerealwaysthingsCarolinaandIweretryingtorelyon.Theentiremovie,apartfromonesequence,wasshothandheldtocapturetheenergyofthefilm.TheenergythatZoeybringstoErica,forexample,issopalpable.Wedidn’twanttoeverconfinehertospecificblockingorveryfancycamerawork,aswefeltlikeitwouldbecuttingoffherperformanceatthelegs.Instead,ratherthanlightingforaspecificmark,wewouldlightrooms360degrees,sotheactorscouldmovearoundandhavefreedom.Q:Werethereanyspecificfilmsorbooksthatinfluencedthiswork?A:Yes,everythingfromE.T.to400BLOWS.ThemovieswewerereallylookingatwerethingslikeFISHTANK,RATCATCHER,andallofAndreaArnoldandLynneRamsay’sstuff.KIDWITHABIKEwasanotherreallyimportantone.OtherthingswewerewatchingwerePICNICATHANGINGROCK,KennethLonergan’sMARGARET,KLUTE,andthere’sthisgreatDeSicamoviecalledTHECHILDRENAREWATCHING.ThesetandwardrobedesignteamswerewatchingalotofE.T.,PARIS,TEXAS,andOVERTHEEDGEforourpalette.There’salsoalotofreadingthatwentintoit.Researchwasreally,reallyimportant—becauseI’mnotinhighschoolanymoreandI’mobviouslynotawoman—soeveryoneonsetgotcopiesofbookslikeGoAskAlicetoPornography:MenPossessingWomenbyAndreaDworkinandPlayingTheWhorebyMelissaGiraGrant.Iwantedeveryonetobeaseducatedaspossibleinthatregard.EvenreadingAmberRoseinterviewswerekindofamazingbecauseshejusthadsomereallycool,andum,empoweringthoughtsonthetopicsweweretackling.Q:Didanydifficultiesorchallengesarisewhenshooting?A:IfIhadtodothingsoveragain,Ithinkdoingahigh-speedchaseina1993stickshiftSaabthatyoubuyonCraigslistthreedaysbeforewasprobablynottheanswer.EspeciallybecauseJoeyMorgan,whodrivestheSaabinthemovie,hadnoexperiencedrivingstick,sohehadtolearnthreedaysbeforeproduction.That,andthecarchasewasactuallyduringthefirstweekshootinginLancasterinaninsane110degreeheat,andJoeywasreallydoingalotofthedrivingstuntshimself,whichwasamazing.Nexttimearound,I’llhavethemtakeoutanAstrovanoutorsomethingwithslightlymoretrunkspacebecauseitwasourtwoleads,ZoeyandJoey,inthefrontwithnoairconditioning,andthenitwasmeandourcameraoperator,Shadi,whoisagorgeousLebanesemanwithflowinghair,bothshirtlessinthebackoftheSaabforhoursinintenseheat,liketouchingshoulderstogether.Itwasaninterestingwaytobondinthatfirstweek.Q:Whatdoyouhopetheaudiencetakesawayfromthefilm?
