when its fail-safe device is activated.

WEAPONSAndromeda Strain: A virus brought to

Earth aboard an American satellite, it

causes almost immediate death by

clotting the blood of its victims. It even-

tually mutates into a form that eats

away plastic and rubber before becom-ing completely harmless.

Underground Installation: The labora-

tory where the scientists conduct their

research is equipped with a "fail-safe"

system to prevent any diseases from

escaping and harming the surrounding

areas. If the system is activated it will

set off a nuclear explosion, and only the

person holding a special key can

prevent it from going off. There are also

various protection devices—tranquilizerdarts, laser beams, gases, etc.—to stop

intruders and escaped laboratory

animals. Finally, during the film, two of

the scientists come to suspect that the

lab was built to develop germ warfare.

set off, thus blowing up the Earth andeffectively ending the film.

Buck Rogers and cohort Buddyawaken from suspended animation in

the 25th century just in time to help Dr.

Huer and Wilma Deering in their fight

against Earth tyrant Killer Kane. They

go to Saturn, where the good guys get

support from the Saturnians while the

bad guys make trouble with the

primitive Zugs. who are subdued.

WEAPONSRay Guns: A classic example of the

basic weapon used by most SF screen

heros. In Buck's case, it resembles a

round tinkertoy assembly, while the

Saturnians are equipped with sawhandles mounted with several test

tubes. They zap people with a beam of

light.

Mind Control Helmets: Used by Killer

Kane, they sap the will and allow him to

control people's minds. At one point, he

manages to use one on Buck. Theywere apparently fashioned out of

inverted tin buckets with fins.

BUCK ROGERS IN THE 25TH CENTURY

Buck Rogers in the 25thCenturyUniversal, 1979, Color

Buck Rogers is a 20th century Earth

astronaut who is frozen in space and

wakes to find himself in the 25th

century. He allies himself with the Earth

forces in the persons of Colonel Wilma

Deering, and robots Twiki and Theo—against the treacherous Draconian

forces, represented by sultry princess

Ardala and her sidekick Kane.

WEAPONSStarfighters: Used by Earth forces and

by the pirate marauders who are

actually disguised Draconians. The

Earth ships are similar in design to

those appearing in T.V. show Battlestar

Galactica, and use the same laser-type

weapons. They are controller by com-puter, but can be put on manual.

Freeze Gun: Freezes the victim in his or

her tracks. It is used by Buck to tempo-

rarily stop Princess Ardala's hulking

bodyguard.Bombs: Intended by the Draconians to

be used against Earth, but are instead

used by Buck to blow up the enemyspacecraft.

Rayguns: Carried by all concerned, they

cause instant unconsciousness.

the humans to mend their ways or else!

WEAPONSGort: The 12-foot-high robot acts as an

impartial police force, punishing any act

of violence. It is extremely strong, and

has a disintegration ray which comesfrom its "eye", which is used against

various unfortunate soldiers.

destroyed all life on Skaro. Now the

Daleks plan to finish off the Thais with

kill, and are defeated when it is dis-

covered that they are sensitive to high

frequency sound.WEAPONSDisintegration Rays: Both the flying

saucers and the arms of the aliens'

metal shells are capable of dissolving

people and objects into nothingness.

High Frequency Weapons: Developedby Earth scientists to knock the saucers

out of the sky, these weapons, mountedon the roofs of vans, destroy the aliens

with concentrated sound. The finished

weapon looks like a small radar

antenna.

Five people become miniaturized in

order to travel through the bloodstream

of a scientist in a proportionally

miniaturized submarine. Although

hindered by a saboteur in their midst,

they finally reach the brain, dissolve the

blood clot and exit via a tear drop,

leaving the spy to be devoured by white

blood corpuscles.

WEAPONSLaser: The sub is equipped with a spe-

cially built laser to be used to operate

on the scientist's brain. When the

saboteur strikes, it is used to cripple the

sub.

themselves from roving moon-calves,

the Selenites have developed a long,

branchlike tubular structure to which

are attached energy giving minerals.

The weapons emit lightning bolt-like rays

which drive away the creatures.

being of the ship is released and

threatens to destroy London.

WEAPONSMartian Spaceship: Equipped with a

still-active autoinatic system, the

spaceship electrocutes an intruder,

dissolves the flesh of an army officer via

a heat ray, and releases a force that

takes command of humans who are

descended from past interbreeding with

the Martians. The human/Martians then

turn on the Earth humans.Telepathic Powers: Used by the

human/Martians to destroy the Earth

humans.

WEAPONSGocko: Ming's protective pet is an ugly

combination of dragon and lobster.

While Flash manages to escape its

claws, Ming himself is not so lucky, andis vanquished by his own device.

Ray Guns: As is usual in these serials,

nobody is without one: Flash's

handweapon looks like a small thermos

with a handle attached: Ming's forces

bear elaborate hunting rifles. Theyknock people down with a lightning bolt

effect which was created by scratching

a pin directly on the film.

realize that the machine would also

3PO and R2-D2. In the end, the Princess

is rescued, Obi-Wan is (perhaps) killed

by the evil Darth Vader, and the Death

Star is blown to smithereens.

WEAPONSLight Sabres: Obi-Wan Kenobi andDarth Vader duel to the death with their

light sabres, sword-like weapons con-

sisting of short jeweled handgrips from

which emerge powerful rays of light. For

the finished film, the light and sound of

the British Enfield No. 1 Mark VI, cutting

down the stock and barrel and adding a

Tuskan Gaffe Stick: The Tuskan raiders

who nearly kill Luke at the beginning of

the film sport evil-looking gaffe sticks.

These fearsome weapons were actually

constructed of pipes to which wereattached such odds and ends as small

missiles, tires, and what resembles a

very oversized gum-stimulator.
