Division of Health and Public Services

TO: Prospective Law Enforcement Academy students

FROM: Jerry Snay, Law Enforcement Coordinator

Thank you for your interest in the Stark State College Law Enforcement Academy (LEA). Below are answers to some frequently asked questions about the LEA:

What are the requirements for admission? You must (1) be in good physical condition, as certified by a doctor, because physical training is a mandatory component of the Academy; (2) have no documented mental health issues; (3) pass a background check1, and (4) complete the admissions process for the academy. If you are under 21, you can work towards your Associate of Arts degree in Criminal Justice while waiting to be eligible to enter the LEA.

When does the LEA start and how long does it run? Stark State College conducts three Law Enforcement Academies each academic year. The Academy starting times are Fall Semester (August), Spring Semester (January), and Summer Semester (June). A complete academy consists of two courses, Law Enforcement Academy I and II. Both must be completed. Please send an email to [email protected] for a complete schedule including application deadlines.

When and where do the classes meet? The LEA classes are held Monday through Thursday evenings (Fall) from 5:00-10:00 p.m., (Spring), 9:00 a.m.-1 p.m. (Summer) every Saturday and some Sundays from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (All). Classes are located at the Law Enforcement Training Academy, 8252 Frank Ave NW.

What does the LEA cost? The current total cost (for 24 credit hours) is approximately $3686.40, plus fees, books, and equipment. Each course has an $800.00 lab fee to cover costs such as ammunition, targets, and cruisers. Because you earn college credit, many students will be eligible for financial aid that can be applied toward tuition. There are also costs for equipment (for example, a firearm, handcuffs, uniform shirts) that total approximately $450.00. Uniforms and most equipment are purchased at the book store where financial aid may be used. The only items that cannot be purchased at the bookstore are boots and your duty handgun.

How do I apply for the Law Enforcement Academy? To obtain additional details on the application process, you must send an email to [email protected]. Please plan to complete your packet two months before you intend to attend.

I want to prepare for the academy, what should I do? The best thing anyone can do is begin a physical fitness workout. Please use the following link to view a physical fitness test. http://www.ohioattorneygeneral.gov/Media/Videos/Physical-Fitness-and-Conditioning. 1No person having any of the following situations may attend basic training (and if these matters include occurrences that are sealed or expunged, they must be reported to OPOTC for review). a. Any felony conviction; b. Any person currently registering as a sex offender, child-victim offender, or arson offender; c. Any person under indictment or otherwise charged with an offense under ORC Chapter 2925, Drug Offenses; Chapter 3719, Controlled Substances, or Chapter 4729, Dangerous Drugs, that involves the illegal possession, use, sale, administration, or distribution of or trafficking in a drug of abuse – if they are convicted of that offense, they are disqualified for a three year period; d. Any person under indictment or otherwise charged with a misdemeanor offense of violence – if they are convicted of that offense, they are disqualified for a three year period; e. Any person under indictment or otherwise charged with a violation of ORC 2903.14, Negligent Assault; f. Any person with a conviction or guilty to an offense under ORC Chapter 2913, Theft and Fraud, or a municipal ordinance that is substantially similar is disqualified for a three year period.

Students must pass the pre-test to be accepted to the academy. The pre-test consists of a timed 1.5 mile run, one minute sit-ups, and one minute push-ups. The student must pass at the level stated by the Academy Commander. The current standard is set by the Cooper Institute. Students are required to be at 50% to be eligible to sit for the state test. To assure students are prepared for the academy and the state standards, OPOTA currently requires a score of 15% to enter the academy. http://www.ohioattorneygeneral.gov/Media/Videos/Physical-Fitness-and-Conditioning Attend as many pre-test sessions as you like to monitor your progress toward the required standard.
