The Harder I Try the Better I Get

After a lifetime being involved in competitive sport either

playing , training and coach-ing I found myself at the age of 48 thinking “what a great feeling of not having to go to training in all the extreme conditions and being able to go home from work and do little or nothing if I felt like it.” After 12 months of avoiding physical exercise I soon found my condition had dete-riorated and not changing my eating habits caused further problems. I’m not able to go for a run anymore due to bad knees that need replacing so I was looking for an alterna-tive way (bike riding is too scary where I live) to combat the weak mindset I had start-

ed to follow.

My daughter first posed the idea of joining a gym as she was about to join the work-force so thought she could afford the cost and she want-ed to become fitter and healthier. “Come with me Dad” was the cry- “Show me some exercises that will help me” - I have qualifications in Physical Education. I thought it would benefit both of us - get back some conditioning because I wasn’t enjoying laziness as much as I thought. Beau Girdham “I started off at STARplex in 2010. I

loved it so much that I wanted to make a career out of it, so became

a Personal Trainer. Sharing my knowledge and skills with others to

achieve their results is really inspiring and a great feeling.”

Thanks to the Government Training Incentives offered for this particular course, STARplex was able to offer this to the Trainees free of charge as well as at no cost to the Business.

As the Co-ordinator and Workplace Mentor for this program, I was amazed at the efforts by everyone.. Each and every trainee was deserving of the opportunity and, now 10 months later all 15 staff members hold a Diploma of Management. The 2011 Diploma group have really done STARplex proud and I know that their improved and newly found leadership qualities will filter through to the staff they lead.

STARplex Staff celebrate completion ofDiploma in Management

In March 2011, 15 STARplex staff accepted the challenge to better themselves, both personally and professionally. It was on….The Diploma of Management was now in their sights. The team of ‘trainees’ permanent part time and fulltime staff from ALL areas of STARplex. The Facilitator, Brett Hutchinson, from Proteus Leadership Centres, made his way to Gawler one day a month to cover all aspects of Management with the training group. Eight Modules cover-ing everything from Recruiting Staff, Managing People Per-formance to Risk Management and Managing Personal Work Priorities filled our trainees heads with the ideas, the confidence and the ‘know how’ to become better leaders.

Hello Readers

Do you ever catch yourself saying “I’m so busy” when asked “how are you to-

day?” Being busy might describe the heavy work load we undertake, the number of things we squeeze into the day or the number of things we have on our mind. Many of us are busy, but I wonder whether we sometimes lay claim to this simply to avoid being seen as lazy!

It’s important to recognise that we need time to slow down, clear the mind and relax. And being busy all day does not lend itself to this state of being. Slow down time should not be confused with being lazy, rather it is purposeful, planned and structured. It may involve physical activity such as walking or it may involve coffee with a friend or Tai Chi on the lawn. This year I would encourage you to find time in your day to clear your head of busyness. Imagine the reaction you might get when asked “How are you today?” if your answer was “I’m so relaxed”.

Having recently taken a short holiday and enjoyed some of the delightful plac-es in and around Adelaide, the Barossa and Southern Fleurieu Peninsula with family and friends, in beautiful weather I was reminded of how blessed I am to live in this country; to be able to lead a great team of people at STARplex, and have the privilege to tell people how busy I am or how relaxed I am. It can give you a fresh perspective, don't you think?

So let's appreciate the fact that we can work hard, relax and make a difference where we are, because many are not so lucky.

Yours in Health & Fitness

STARS in my eyes The ancient and very beautiful Bauhinia tree with its stunning white orchid-like flowers and 2-lobed leaves, growing on the footpath outside my house died over sum-mer. The council gardener has said he will remove it in the next round and plant a new one in its place. We humans I think have a preference for

straight lines. We think of evolution and human development as following an uncrooked path toward perfection. I see my own life more and more as moving in circles or cycles. Like the lesson of the Bauhinia tree, life is not linear but as the old song says ‘like a circle in a spiral, Like a wheel within a wheel. Never ending or beginning, On an ever spinning wheel . . .’ The poet Rilke said ‘I live my life in widening rings. And so do I. Never coming back to the same place, but as TS Eliot wrote ‘We shall not cease from exploration. And the end of all our exploring. Will be to arrive where we started. And know the place for the first time’.

Mindfulness The word travel is closely related to travail

and the Latin tripalium which means torture.

I have never found being away from home

an easy thing. It is more often than not

a labour. I always choose to walk, to take a boat,

to go the long way around. I like to linger

let strange places be themselves.

I always try to take the scenic route if I can

and arrive where I started always finding myself.

Become satisfied with what you eat

Many if not most of the weight loss diets on the market lead to 80% of people regaining all if not more weight within two years of diet completion. I believe that the main two reasons for this are;

People don’t take the time to learn healthy eating habits and tend to just follow what is prescribed

People become unsatisfied with following someone else’s diet plan and typically revert back to their old eating habits

If we can understand the ingredients in foods and meals we can take control of what we eat at home by manipulating our

favourite recipes. The nutrients that typically make a food or meal unhealthy are fat (particularly saturated fat), sugar and salt therefore foods/ingredients that are high in these need to be reduced. By making ‘Healthy Swaps’ we are able to reduce the fat, sugar and salt content of meals making them healthier while also retaining their taste. By reducing a meals total sugar and fat content we will significantly reduce total kilojoule content which is the key for those looking to lose body fat.

Below is a list of typical ingredients that can easily be replaced with healthier (lower in either fat, sugar or salt) alternatives. Be prepared to have slight taste changes in the final product however I guarantee you will soon not notice the difference and will happily continue into a healthier future.

Thrilling Australian Day Basketball Tournament

(story continued from page 1) competition was as we witnessed several games that ended in a draw and many others that were decided by less than three points. With so many teams we were able to create eighteen divisions and therefore a well-balanced competition with most games in the balance until the final seconds of the game.

The tournament also provided an opportunity for both under 23 players and men who are still very competitive and want to play basketball. A very competitive men’s grand final brought the tournament to an end and everyone feeling like the weekend had provided the perfect launching pad for a successful 2012 basketball season.

Keeping Kids Active The importance of children sustaining an active lifestyle is fundamental because of the possibilities of health implica-tions that may occur down the track. However, it is just as important that children enjoy what they are doing to keep active, and that they are having fun, as that’s what being a kid is all about! It is also important that children learn this from a young age. This helps them understand the importance and the reasons we need to keep healthy and active, and also makes it easier for them to adapt it to their

Father & Son sharing a passion for cycling My background as a former school teacher has highlighted to me the importance of father and son relation-ships. I am learning every day that this time is to be cherished. My eldest son, Callum recently turned 14 years old and has a passion for bike riding. Since finishing with his first sport (soccer) which he was involved in from an early age and spent the past decade playing, he has joined a cycling club and has competed in five road races (Criterions) winning one and placing well in most

petitive road bike and some riders have parted with the sum it would cost for a new small car! Callum is always searching on E-Bay for the best deal on second hand parts and until he finds a job this will be the only possibility of him getting an upgrade!

The real lure of this sport is the feeling of power; a bicycle can travel fast, it’s convenient, allowing anyone to travel almost anywhere enjoying the tranquil surroundings. We have often marvelled together how picturesque a view is and at the distance we travel in such a short time. In truth, part of the reason we ride together is my concern for his safety on the roads. When winter approach-es I will buy a set of rollers for him to train using his bike indoors.

I am learning from my son. The real test of character in cycling is not giving up when climbs are ridiculously hard, when your legs burn and you know that the summit is waiting there patiently.

others. This should not have been a surprise as my family had two elite riders in separate generations represent SA and Australia.

It’s often said it is the parents who most influence the children however in this instance I find myself swept up in his energy. I have begun to share his interest, riding as many as 200km a week with him, helping “condition” him for the season ahead. I enjoy this as it keeps me fit and we can share the burden of hard work afterwards stopping for a coffee or a bite to eat. We used to spend an hour or so kicking the ball in a park, now I find myself more involved than ever; stretching him, ensuring he eats properly (he once had a “hunger flat” riding home from a race which left him on the side of the road distressed because he did not have the energy to push the pedals) and ensur-ing his bike runs smoothly.

For some reason, cycling is not a natural choice for many young athletes. This may have to do with the cost. You can spend over $2500 for a basic com-

Bringing back the balance

As the end of the year comes to a close there seems to be a purging of all the things we don’t want in our lives, a soul cleansing if you like. As the New Year begins, the self transforms and we are driven to write down our goals, write down lists, stop smoking, eat healthy and exercise etc. How are you going with that? What strategies have you put in place to realize your goals? If you went to a life coach or had a mentor I guess these are some of the questions that they would ask you. If you work in a management role I guess the good

old strategic plan will keep you focused and on track to realize some of the items on your wish list. It is no wonder that some of us don’t even consider going there because it is either too hard or we fear disappointment.

I had the privilege to go to a Living Ahisma workshop the other week with a dear friend of mine and we enjoyed a couple of hours of complete stillness as we were taken through a guided medi-tation and self reflection. The workshop was led by Mother Maya, a lady monk who has lived in a monastery for the last 30 years and has healed herself of cancer. Living Ahisma means to live your life with the intent not to hurt. It is the art of ensuring that your actions reflect your values, that you have an intent to be considerate to yourself and others, you have an intent to be kind to animals and also that you have an intent to make good environmental choices. The important words here are “that you have an intent to behave in a certain way”.

If your goals have become forgotten or a little hazy, can I ask you to consider that you take the time to create an intent to help you to stick to them. Just because we set ourselves a goal, doesn’t mean that it will come to fruition without any effort. Sometimes when creating goals we see the end result

which is great, but along the way we forget all the little steps that we must take to realize our goal. For example if our New Year’s resolution was to lose 10kg in 2012 or get a six pack, we then need to think about the things that are going to help us realize this goal. To steer us in the right direction we would then create an intent to start going to the gym three or four times a week and eat a healthy balanced diet. These two things together will help us arrive at the end result. It is also breaking our task into smaller more manageable tasks, so we are more likely to stick to our plan. We then also, however need to remem-ber to be kind to ourselves during those times that we stumble along the way or become distracted. Instead of beating ourselves up and going over the I should have done this or I should have done that, it is important for us to STOP, RE-EVALUATE AND MAKE A CHANGE, then try again.

As Mother Maya stated at the Living Ahisma workshop “If you strive for per-fection you will be bitterly disappointed, always strive for balance, this is the key to inner peace”. This is a quote that will stick with me through the coming year as I follow my intent to create more clarity and balance in my life.

The Harder I Try the Better I Get

(Story continued from page 1)

to see how we would go. On our first day of the new working year we both went to the gym and went through vari-ous exercises. I couldn’t believe how good I felt for the rest of the day—alert, relaxed and happy. Once again I was hooked on physical exercise to put me on a high. Each day I went I became more and more convinced that this was the way to a better lifestyle. After over-coming the usual soreness of starting a routine I began to expect more from my body and mind each time I went. That was 10 years ago and I still come to the gym between 3-5 times a week, in the morning before work. It is not an obses-sion, but an awareness that the harder I try the better I get. I still get the same feelings of achievement, relaxation and alertness every day as I did when I first started. I, as others do, have medical or physical issues to deal with but what it takes is a positive mindset and a facility to enable you to tackle the solutions to those issues. STARplex has allowed

me to improve my physical and mental condition by supplying a range of equipment, trainers and facilities to tar-get methods I think useful to help me succeed. I haven’t regretted the deci-sion to re-start my healthy lifestyle or the choice of venue to tackle it. There are days when you don’t want to exer-cise and that’s OK- as long as you know what you want isn’t going to happen without hard work and commitment. The harder I try the better I get .Don’t forget to enjoy the other things in your life as well. Knowing I will work off any over indulgence, I happily and without guilt enjoy my extras. A good balance is the key to what I think would be a suc-cessful life.

The inspiration comes from many people, some of whom don’t know they are inspiring you because to them, it is a way of life and they just get on with living and trying to enjoy life. These people understand that to best enjoy any endeavours in life you must be in a condition to handle the tough times when they arise and they do and they will continue to at times. Physical health

along with a well balanced mental con-dition will enable you to cope with stresses better. These people I first spoke of, are those people you see in the gym, pool and exercise classes doing what is necessary for them (some much older than myself, those doing rehab because of an injury or illness and those who are not happy with their lifestyle). These everyday people inspire others more than the specialist athletes because most of us will never be an elite athlete for one reason or another -that goal is not achievable for most.

When you see the average person having a go, it gives you hope that you can achieve success in your endeav-ours.

Ask the question when faced with the dilemma of “I need to get fitter”:—

FIT FOR WHAT?

Make sure your goals are achievable and have some short term goals so you can reassess often.
