Opflex

Achievements

Up to 25 percent energy reduction for aeration.

Up to 75 percent energy reduction for grit chamber aeration

Up to 75 percent reduction in energy for internal pumping

Up to 100 percent reduction of chemicals

Opflex focuses on operational savings. The savings are achieved through prioritization of the best biological performance during all load situations without compromising a good effluent quality.

Advantages of the OpflexLower operating costs: Opflex helps reduce energy consumption and the need for chemicals in the denitrification and phosphorus precipi-tation process.

Reduced chemical sludge production: The sludge production will be dramatically reduced when the advanced online control is installed at a wastewater treatment plant, and the environment will benefit from this.

Flexibility: High flexibility in the process – continuous adjustment of the control in relation to the load variations over time. The general overview of operations will be improved and provide the operators with better information and knowledge.

Case: Damhusåen WWTP, Denmark The Damhusåen plant in Denmark has a capacity of 350,000 PE. Previously, the plant could not comply with the effluent standards on concentration of total nitrogen in the effluent, and the operational reliability was difficult to achieve.

In 2012, STAR Opflex was installed and within the first 12 months the plant reduced its energy costs for biological treatment by 16 percent and reduced its use of chemicals by 33 percent. Compliance with effluent standards on total nitrogen in the effluent was also archieved after the total nitrogen in the effluent was reduced by 30 percent. The good results were obtained despite the fact that the former operation was based on a PLC online control. On the basis of these good results and the experience from other plants in Copenhagen, the STAR Opleflex was ex-tended in 2013 with the PREACT - Forecast to improve the performance during rain events.

Achievements16 percent reduction of energy costs 33 percent reduction of chemicals

Case: SK Utility A/SSK Utility was established in 2008 by merging 4 munici-pal utility companies. Since 2003, STAR Opflex has been in operation at the main wastewater treatment plant in Slagelse, Denmark and successfully reduced effluent concentrations of Total-N by 20 percent, which resulted in a much more stable effluent profile for BOD, Total-N and Total-P. Subsequently, the plant has been upgraded to 115.000 PE.

SK Utility has extended the STAR Utility Solution™ by WWM-Control satellites at 5 wastewater treatment plants with capacities ranging from 2,000 to 35,000 PE. All plants have experienced reductions in Total-N, Total-P from 5 to 25 percent along with savings in energy con-sumption. Now focus is on the Radar - Forecast in order to improve its start-up of stormwater control and handling of stormwater situations in the catchment areas.

Achievements:20 percent reduction in effluent concentration of Total N5-25 percent reduction in effluent concentration of Total P Energy savings

Increase hydraulic capacity– reduced sludge escape & footprints

STAR Utility Solutions™ | WasteWater Manager-Control

Hydroflex

Achievements

Up to 100 percent higher flow through the wastewater treatment plant without capital investment

Smaller footprint if installed in the design phase of a DB project

Minimal or no sludge escape from secondary settling tanks.

Hydroflex focuses on reduction of process volumes while increasing the hydraulic capacity.

If installed in the design phase of a DB project, the online control will reduce footprints and avoid extension of volumes.

Advantages of the HydroflexProven CAPEX savings: Hydroflex will dramatically increase plant capacity. Investment in retention and settling volumes is significantly reduced and in some cases totally avoided due to WWM Control.

Flexibility: High process flexibility in relation to changes in the actual load compared to the design load.

Operational savings can be achieved through extension of the advanced online control system.

Protection: The environment will be protected through the increased hydraulic capacity which will minimize the combined sewer overflow (CSO) and reduce the risk of sludge escape.

Case: Czajka WWTP, Warsaw, Poland The Czajka plant in Poland is a 2,000,000 PE wastewater treatment plant at which the Hydroflex was introduced during the design phase of the DB project. The plant was built in 2010 and comprises 10 parallel lines each with a Hydroflex. Introduction of the advanced control already in the design phase made it possible to reduce the volume of the secondary settling tanks by 15 percent. The diame-ter of the tanks was reduced from 52 m to 48 m, which re-sulted in smaller footprints and lower capital investment.

An additional benefit of Hydroflex was that the operating costs were reduced.

AchievementsReduced volume of settling tanks by 15 percent

Reduced diameter of tanks from 52 m to 48 m

Smaller footprints

Lower CAPEX

Reduced operating costs

Case: Køge-Egnen WWTP, DenmarkThe Køge-Egnen plant in Denmark is a 100,000 PE waste-water treatment plant with biological nutrient removal, which was challenged by frequent sludge escape from the secondary settling tanks during storm water events.

The Hydroflex package for upgrading of the hydraulic capacity was introduced successfully, and today, the bio-logical step manages 100 percent more wastewater with no sludge escape.

Together with the hydraulic control package, additional Opflex was introduced to reduce the operating costs. The first years showed a 25 percent reduction in energy used for the biological step, and a 33 percent reduc tion of che-micals for precipitation. The good results were obtained by replacing the original online control system with the WasteWater Manager-Control.

Achievements:Double up on hydraulic capacity25 percent reduction in energy for biological step33 percent reduction of chemicals for precipitation

WATER TECHNOLOGIES

Increase biological capacity– better effluent quality

STAR Utility Solutions™ | WasteWater Manager-Control

Bioflex

Achievements

Up to 40 percent higher biological capacity with same effluent concentrations as before

Up to 30 percent reduction in biological volume

Up to 50 percent less total N in the effluent

Bioflex minimizes effluent concentrations and increases biological capacity.

The improved effluent quality is achieved through optimization of the biological performance in all load situations and includes overall balance of loads and sludge distribution with optimum use of all available volumes. This focus has a win-win spin-off as energy con-sumption and the need for chemical dosing for denitrification and phosphorus precipitation will often decrease, and an increase of tank volumes may be postponed or even avoided depending on the load situation.

Advantages of the BioflexLower capital investment: Bioflex will dramatically increase the biolo-gical capacity at the plant and as a result, the investment in tanks for biological treatment will be reduced while the same effluent quality is achieved.

Flexibility: High process flexibility in relation to changes in the actual load compared to the design load. Operational savings can be achieved through extension of the advanced online control system.

Protection: A high treatment efficiency will be reflected in the water quality in the surrounding environment. Bioflex significantly reduces the total nitrogen concentration in the effluent, which will reduce nutrient pollution in the receiving waters.

Case: Ede WWTP, the Netherlands The Ede wastewater treatment plant in the Netherlands is a BioDenipho plant designed for 300,000 PE.

The effluent quality from the plant was exceeding EU’s effluent standards (10 mg N/L), and it was expected that the load would increase by approx. 20 percent.

In 2011, the Bioflex was installed and replaced the existing PLC-based online control system. Within a very short time, the Bioflex has achieved very satisfying results such as halving of the Total N concentration to a mere 6.8 mg N/l, reducing the metal dosage of AlCl by 20 percent and the planned extension of the plant was cancelled.

AchievementsTotal N concentration of 6.8 mg N/l

Metal dosage of AlCl reduced by 20 percent

No plant extension necessary

Case: Daugavgrida WWTP, Riga, LatviaThe Daugavgriva wastewater treatment plant in Latvia with biological nutrient removal has been designed for 730,000 PE but is overloaded which has resulted in a poor effluent quality as a result. In particular, it was not possible to comply with the effluent demand of 10 mg total nitrogen/l. At the same time, it was expected that the future load would increase and an extension would be required. The future load of the plant is expected to be 1,050,000 PE (200,000 m/d).

The introduction of the STAR Utility Solutions™ - Bioflex and a change of biological process to the BioDenitro process optimised the biological and hydraulic capacity to such a degree that an extension of the volume became unnecessary.

The wastewater treatment plant has upgraded the existing PLC/SCADA system, instrumentation and other equipment in such a way that it has become applicable for advanced control.

Achievements:40 percent increase of the biological capacity.

WATER TECHNOLOGIES

Be prepared for flooding during heavy rain – make socio-economic investmentsOnline warning by SURFF has been developed to reduce the damage from heavy rain and the flooding created by these extreme weather events. The earlier the warning, the better protection of citizens, buildings, and infrastructure is achieved.

SURFF ensures that the information from weather forecasts, sewer systems and ground conditions is automatically used for predictions of extreme weather events and the consequences. It is up to the authorities, utility companies and the cities’ emergency task force to find a common categorisation and order of priority and to be pre pared when the extreme event occurs.

The SURFF system warns 6 to 12 hours ahead, but 48hour forecast can be provided.

SURFF gives you:• Earlierevacuationofcitizens.Evacuation of citizens in

areas that are expected to be flooded.

• Morereliableinfrastructure. Possibility of prior traffic diversion at roads or viaducts at risk of flooding.

• Lessdamagetofurnitureandequipment. Possibility of planning security measures for buildings and furniture/equipment to minimise damage.

• Manyapplications. Warning of extreme weather events and risk of flooding can be used by many stakeholders and for many purposes as it is geographically predicted where the flooding will take place.

How does SURFF perform?Every hour, SURFF receives the latest updated weather report and calculates the consequences in the sewer system and at ground level.

The results are presented visually on a dynamic map that creates a quick overview for relevant authorities and other stakeholders. The information can also be provided for specific locations, if requested.

SURFF has a builtin quality assurance that will inform you whether the data available is sufficient, and will predict the probability of flooding. Therefore unnecessary and costly emergency measures are avoided. The quality assurance is visually illustrated for easy understanding.

Case: Copenhagen With the giant rain storm that flooded Copenhagen in 2011 and its unprecedented extent of damage, Krüger facilitated a cooperation with HOFOR, BIOFOS and DMI in 2013. Since then, this group has worked on a development project called OMOVAST. The project includes areas of high and low building density with both combined and separate sewer systems.

The purpose was to develop a tool for a more precise and longterm warning system for rain and flooding in order to set up a more targeted emergency system so that the consequential damages of extreme weather events are reduced. SURFF was created through this development project.

The results are presented visually in dynamic and continuously updated maps. They may also be communicated through text messages, emails, social media, or to a SCADA system.

SMART utilisation of the energy in wastewater – flexible consumption of electricity

STAR Utility Solutions™ | WasteWater Manager-Forecast

SMARTGrid

SMARTGrid is a future add-on service to the STAR Utility Solutions™ for waste water treatment plants that will allow the plant to achieve further savings on the energy consumption in connection with the buying and selling of electricity. In brief, the module postpones the electricity consumption at the plant to periods where electricity can be bought at the lowest cost and the production only takes place when the price of electricity is high.

The aim of the development of the SMARTGrid is to con- tribute to Denmark’s goal of being free of fossil fuels by 2050, with more green fluctuating energy sources, such as wind and sun, which requires a quick switch-over of the energy system and thus flexible, SMART consumers.

The SMARTGrid is based on the latest knowledge for predictive modelling of sewer systems and wastewater treatment plants for which the prioriti sation is conti-nuously calibrated on the basis of actual conditions with regard to the wastewater treatment plant performance, the current weather forecasts and updated price prog-nosis for electricity.

Advantages of SMARTGrid• Electricity consumption when the price is low

• Electricity production when the price is high

• Improved economy when buying and selling electricity

• Better CO2 balance

• Compatible with other control modules in STAR Utility Solutions™

• High degree of safety which always complies with effluent quality standards

• Easy and understandable user interface with the possibility of prioritizing the extent of the SMARTGrid forecast.

• Little or no investment required in new online sensors

Case: Kolding Central WWTP, DenmarkThis new add-on service will be tested at Kolding Cen-tral Wastewater Treatment Plant where the SMARTGrid demonstration project is implemented in an existing STAR Utility Solutions™. The development project will be com-pleted during 2015, and it is expected that the SMARTGrid will be the first of its kind in the world.

The challenge of the development project is that a wa-stewater treatment plant has only limited possibilities for determining the amount and composition of the raw material (wastewater) that will enter into the production (clear water). In order words, there is a degree of flexibility that cannot be stretched too far, since it could otherwise have negative consequences for the local aquatic en viron-ment. The expectation for this project is the development of software solutions that ensure the greatest possible utilisation flexibility.

After the implementation of the Kolding project, the STAR Utility Solutions™ is expected to be the first software product in the world that through intelligent, iterative, real-time optimising processes can optimise electricity consumption and electricity production at wastewater treatment plants and in the network, in relation to the balance of the electricity grid and the quality of the treated wastewater.

The first version of the SMARTGrid for the STAR Utility Solutions™ system is expected be lounched on the market in 2015.
