OUR HERITAGE, OUR FUTURE

We know our heritage pretty well but what about our future as Mercedes-Benz drivers? Will we be driving our cars in the future and for that matter will we own an automobile, or just rent one when we need it? Technology progression is not linear by any means, and I will not attempt to define what it is today. Someone said "the future is now" and that is so

Sweetheart Lunch Southwestern Yacht Club

By Steve Ross The Packard and Mercedes-Benz automobiles have a history of association from the early days of racing. At the start of WWII, these two motorcar companies were considered to be two of the best automobiles made worldwide. At the end of the war, Mercedes-Benz rose from the ashes to regain its prominence and Packard began to resume its place as a premier manufacturer of automobiles. For a multitude of reasons, Packard failed to recover its position in the automotive world. In the late 1950s, Mercedes-Benz became a subsidiary of

the Studebaker- Packard Corporation and as we all know Packard never regained its status in the car market. Mercedes-Benz went on to become one of the largest automobile manufacturers in the world. OK, I know you are asking what the devil has this got to do with a Valentine Luncheon?? For the past three years, the Packard and Mercedes-Benz clubs have been having joint events. The two clubs thoroughly enjoy each other's company, the interest and enjoyment of the cars, and the people have been most gratifying. Packard Club members have joined the Mercedes-Benz Club, and Mercedes-Benz folks have become interested in the Packard. The Valentine Luncheon was no exception. An equal number of the two clubs joined at the Southwestern Yacht Club and had a fantastic Sweetheart Luncheon, There was an exchange of valentines, and a drawing for great prizes.

We had some new members from both clubs and for a few this was their first outing with the club. On the far left is Nancy Werber who joined the Packard club on the day of the luncheon and joining her was Ed Radtke. Next to Ed is Mr. Steve Shapley who drove his totally original 1982 300 Mercedes-Benz diesel. Next to Steve we have Dion and Marjo who are members of both clubs. Marjo is the lady who put this entire event together. THANK YOU MARJO. I do hope you got lots of Valentines!

Steve Shapley attends his first Mercedes Benz Club event. Steve is in the process of restoring a 1982 300 Diesel and a Pagoda. I believe he has 4 Mercedes-Benz. He was very interested in Jim Woolsey’s 1935 Twelve, Limo. He and Jim spent some time talking cars and Packards. Who knows, maybe a new Packard club member. It is a pleasure to associate with the younger generation and share their enthusiasm and interest our hobby. A well-worn expression but, they are the future of the automobile clubs as we know them today.

Adelaide and Kathy. Adelaide smiled the entire day and if she cried or got upset, I missed it. Hope she can make our other fun events.

OK, Paul that was my winning ticket!

Susan and Mike Nadeau, new members, attending their first outing with the Packard Club. Mike and Susan have a 1936 Packard 120-B Sedan.

The beautiful dessert table and a close-up of one of the many choices. Of course for those watching their caloric intake there was not much choice but to “go for it.” Go “BIG” or go home I guess. There was plenty to go around so we all had a taste of the chocolate.

Mr. Phil Pizzuto also was a raffle winner. This table was a big winner in the raffle. The Santy family, Nick and Phil were all winners.

Nick Fitzelberg is a raffle winner Bet it is a bottle of Vino.

A view of groups seated for lunch, drawings, and presentations. The bags hanging on the back of the chairs with a heart affixed contains a Valentine which the person seated in the chair may use to present to whomever they want. Not all of us received a Valentine. Oh well

Kathy and Paul Santy with Karen and Richard Schauer. How could they possibly look any happier?

L to R Richard Mann, Anne Kinner, Munira and David Comber, and Pete and Jen Lobner. The tables were decorated by Marjo Miller and Carol Kruse-Ross. As you may see there are a lot of people in this photo but we will just look at the folks in the forefront. From L to R is Brian Kruse, Gary Jarvis, Bob Gunthorp, Jeanette Hay, and Rudy and Cheryl Hradecky.

Anne Kinner wins a raffle prize. Looks like wine maybe.

Diana Kruse, our Director of First Impressions, is a prize winner. I wonder what was in the envelope? A large sum of money, the title to a 2019 Mercedes-Benz AMG S63 or maybe just a free dinner card.

Front and center is Mike Nadeau listening as Packard Club Regional Director Richard Schauer and MBCA San Diego Section President Victoria Mazelli welcome the Star Car and Packard drivers to our Valentine celebration

Carol Ross was presented a spa day by the Packard Club for her contributions of decorating the room for our various dining events. As you can see she is not sure what is happening

This Carol after finding out that she is being given a Spa Day. The expression is considerably different.

Thank you Carol for your decorating talents

Carol looking relaxed after a busy fun day.

It was a really beautiful day after a few days of rain. The sun was shining brightly in true San Diego fashion. The ladies were stunningly lovely and the fine automobiles were looking regal as well. Go back and take a look at the table decorations. Some lucky people go to take those home! Perhaps the clubs will do this again next year. If so please consider joining us for some fun dining, beautiful people, and fine automobiles.

WELCOME ABOARD

WE THANK The San Diego Section currently has 232 members. If you see a fellow Mercedes-Benz driver ask them if they would like to join our club. The magazine has interesting articles on defensive and performance driving, restoration and maintenance advice from brand experts, and information from sections throughout North America…and much more.

BUTTONWILLOW DRIVING EVENTS 2019

SATURDAYS, Feb. 16th; Aug. 10th; and Dec. 7th; 2019 8:30 AM to 4:00PM

Fast facts about Buttonwillow

This is an opportunity for members of the Mercedes Club to participate in a one-day driving experience, either on an individual basis or as an organized membership gathering. This one-day performance driving and learning event allows you to become a better driver. You also learn more about the performance and handling aspects of your Mercedes. Although this event held at a racetrack is referred to as performance driving, this is not one’s primary reason for going to Buttonwillow. You will be given the opportunity to learn to drive your Mercedes more safely and competently by a professional driver. You will learn about speed, cornering, braking, and more importantly the capability of your Mercedes or other automobile, as well as your own driving capabilities. After instruction, you may, if you want, go to the track solo and see how you do. Buttonwillow Raceway Park is a motorsports park in Kern County, California, 10 miles (16 km) north of the town of Buttonwillow and 28 miles (45 km) northwest of Bakersfield. It is located just off the Buttonwillow exit on I-5. Constructed during World War 1 by world famous racing driver Dario Resta, it is now owned and operated by the California Sports Car Club, a region of SCCA. Buttonwillow is the "flagship" track of Cal Club, and is also the location of the Cal Club's administrative offices. (Courtesy of Wikipedia) Visit the Buttonwillow Raceway website at: buttonwillowraceway.com.

PagodaFest Jeff Brook

PagodaFest is coming to San Diego in 2019! What is PagodaFest? In a nutshell, PagodaFest is about and for Pagoda owners and enthusiasts worldwide who own or otherwise enjoy the iconic Mercedes- Benz 230 SL, 250 SL, and 280 SL roadsters and convertibles and want to learn more about these cars.

Sponsored by the International Pagoda SL Group (www.sl113.org), PagodaFest is not formally affiliated with MBCA. Most Pagoda

members own other Mercedes cars and are members of MBCA. Historically, Pagoda events have drawn 25-30 or more Pagoda cars with attendance from all over the United States, Canada, Europe, and even as far away as Australia.

PagodaFest San Diego will be the first Pagoda-focused event to take place west of the Mississippi. PagodaFest San Diego will be headquartered at the Grand Pacific Palisades resort in Carlsbad, with car activities scheduled for both Friday, October 4, at the Flower Fields adjacent the Grand Pacific, and a drive starting from the Grand Pacific on Saturday, October 5, and winding throughout portions of San Diego County.

At the Flower Fields, technical sessions and interactive presentations are planned to educate PagodaFest attendees on the features, operation and maintenance of their Pagoda cars. Also, there will be a Pagoda Marketplace enabling attendees and vendors to sell, buy and trade all things Pagoda. In the afternoon we will have a Pagoda Showcase to show off your Pagoda on the lush grounds of the Flower Fields. A perfect setting for socializing with fellow Pagoda enthusiasts. We will end our first day with one of the things for which San Diego is best known, namely a Fiesta dinner with mariachi music, traditional dancers, and a Pagoda piñata!

The drive on Saturday will be a Pagoda Poker Run, and is a self-paced leisurely tour through several of San Diego County's scenic sights while competing with fellow Pagoda drivers for the best hand of poker. At each of five planned stops, Poker Run participants will be given a card ultimately forming a five-card poker hand. Prizes will be given for the best (and also the worst!) poker hand at a celebratory awards dinner that evening at the Encinitas Ranch Golf Resort overlooking the beautiful San Diego coastal bluffs. Here you can watch the sunset over the Pacific Ocean while enjoying your favorite beverage and friends while being warmed by the outdoor fireplace. Awards will be given to the winners of the Showcase and the Poker Run, as well as raffle prizes.

All of the above fun and excitement is conveniently available in one all-inclusive PagodaPASS ticket. If you are interested in learning more about PagodaFest, or to buy tickets, please visit the official PagodaFest website http://www.pagodafest.com. However, the number of PagodaPASSes is limited and we expect them to sell out soon. So if you have a Pagoda we hope you will act quickly and join us for two days of social and technical Pagoda fun! See you at PagodaFest in 2019
