From the Desk of Mr. Sefcik and Mrs. Peters…
Welcome back! We are so excited for another fun and educational year. We hope to see you at Curriculum Night this Thursday, September 5 at 6:00. This event is for parents only and a great opportunity to meet the teachers, walk through your child’s schedule, become familiar with the grade level curriculum, and learn more about our PTA and Day of Service. Fox Lake District 114 is built on a foundation of our students, staff, families, and community. Cooperatively, we continuously work together to provide the best educational experience for our children. The model below displays how integral each component is to our achievements and how each member of our team relies on the other to be successful. If even one member of our foundation becomes disengaged, our circle will be broken, affecting our students’ learning and growth.
We are one team, all in!
Study Hall starts Monday, September 9 in Mrs. Culbertson’s room and meets every day afterschool (except Wednesdays) until 4:05. Study Hall is led by Miss Andersen, Miss Dulen, or Miss Jalove. This is an optional program and students can drop in as needed. Homework Club starts Tuesday, September 10 in Mr. Nickles’ classroom. 5th and 6th grade Homework Club meets every Tuesday and 7th and 8th grade Homework Club meets every Thursday. Homework Club is mandatory and requires a teacher’s recommendation to attend.
Attendance Awareness Week is September 9-13. We will be sharing attendance facts that directly correlate to your child’s academic performance.

We are excited for D114’s 5th Annual Day of Service. It
is our hope that this service project will not just raise
funds for the Fox Lake District 114 PTA, but more
importantly, give students an opportunity to serve in the
community and grow as individuals.
Our goal is to raise $30,000.00 for the PTA that will
benefit all students in Fox Lake District 114. The money
raised is used for educational assemblies, field trips,
Family Nights, Principal Programs, athletic scholarships,
Earth Week activities, school dances, the Lotus and
Stanton libraries, Book Buddies, and the Mentor Program.
Our Day of Service is similar to a walk-a-thon, but instead of students collecting pledges
to walk, students will seek donors to sponsor their involvement in a service project within
our community. We have organized a number of various projects that we will complete on
September 27 during our Day of Service. Additionally, students who collect at least $300
in pledges ($500.00 for families) will participate in a field trip that will include an
additional service opportunity and cultural learning experience. (More details to follow)

Ms. Ayers has taught middle school since 1995 and loves it! She
graduated from Northern Illinois University and most recently,
she taught at Palombi School in Lake Villa. Over the years, she has
taught health, science, life skills, and physical education. She is
Stanton’s new 6th grade science teacher and is excited to be part of
the team. She keeps herself busy outside of the classroom with her
three children and two cats. She also enjoys swimming and bike
riding. Welcome to Stanton, Ms. Ayers!
Music teacher, Miss Armbrecht, graduated from Carthage College
in Kenosha, WI and music has always been a big part of her and
her family’s life. They all love to sing and play the trumpet,
trombone, flute, tuba, piano, and organ. She loves to share her
passion for music and bring the joy of music to others. She is very
excited to get Stanton’s music program started and help the
students discover their musical talents. Her hobbies include
playing her flute, sewing, and doing craft projects.
Mrs. Grosclaude is in the process of earning her master’s degree in
secondary education and is completing her student teaching in Ms.
Wells’ 8th grade classroom this quarter. She married her college
sweetheart and has a 4-year-old St. Bernard rescue named Liam.
The love of teaching children runs in her family—her grandmother
taught in a one-room schoolhouse in Western Nebraska! In her
spare time Mrs. Grosclaude loves to sew, garden, and train dogs.
Best of luck Mrs. Grosclaude; you will be a great teacher!
Miss Goodsite, our new STEM teacher, recently graduated from
Iowa State University. Her favorite part of teaching is getting to
know so many wonderful students and learning how they each
think differently. As the STEM teacher, she is lucky to have every
student in her class. She is a huge Chicago sports fan and goes to
as many games as she can. She lives on Bangs Lake and enjoys
kayaking and boating. Miss Goodsite is happy to be teaching at
Stanton and we are glad she is here, too!
Meet Ms. Posey, Stanton’s social worker. She earned her BA at
Purdue University and her MBA from the University of Chicago.
She has been a social worker for 19 years and loves advocating for
students and supporting those who need someone there for them.
She has two children and two cats, Stu and Lulu. Her hobbies
include biking, hiking, cooking, and horseback riding. Her happy
place is the beach and she is a Chicago Cubs and Bears fan. We are
happy to have you join our team!
Mrs. Gunsaullus is a busy woman! She is the Speech Therapist for
District 114 and Grant High School. She is a graduate of Eastern
Illinois University in Charleston, IL and has been in education for
23 years. She loves being a speech therapist because she enjoys
helping students reach their true potential through learning
strategies and positive reinforcements. She is married, has two
children, and two dogs. When is not traveling between schools,
she loves to cook, bake, scrapbook with friends, and play games
with her family. Welcome aboard, Mrs. Gunsaullus!
Another Redbird from Illinois State University, Miss Palmer
officially joined Stanton’s 6th grade team this year after completing
her student teaching with us last spring. She loves showing
students their ability to believe in themselves while building strong
bonds with them. When she is not teaching, she loves being
outside fishing, kayaking, hiking, and walking her 12-year-old dog,
Pete. She also loves watching the Food Network, House Hunters,
and Netflix. We are so lucky to have you, Ashley!
Mrs. Shannon earned her MBA from Viterbo College in LaCrosse,
WI and started teaching in 1995. For the last 13 years, she has
been substitute teaching and keeping busy being a “stay at home
working mom” to her three kids. When she has time, she likes to
scrapbook and dabble in photography. Outside of work, you can
catch her at one kid’s sporting events or in her garden. She loves
making personal connections with her students and their families
and watching them grow academically and socially. Welcome to
the Stanton family, Mrs. Shannon!
Miss Neukam, the newest member of Stanton’s 5th grade team, is
an Illinois State University Redbird in her first year of teaching.
Her favorite part of being an educator is the chance to work with
students every day and make a difference in their lives. Her
hobbies include solving crossword puzzles, reading books,
coaching volleyball, and binge watching Netflix shows. She has a
dog, Cookie, loves the color pink, and penguins are her favorite
animal. We are so glad she is here!

relationships and being around creative thinkers. In his spare
time, he likes to catch a movie in the theater, play on his computer
with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Indesign. He also loves to

and loves to help students discover what they are good at and then
do more of it. She loves when her students try new things and
meet new people. She comes from a big family and has a rescue
dog named Clark who is afraid of his own shadow. When not
teaching, Ms. Wicklander enjoys macramé, art, music, and making
new things in her at home art studio. We are so glad you are here!

Band Registration is Wednesday, September 4 at
Lotus School at 6:00pm.
Register online at www.musicedservices.org.
Stanton School partners with Music Education
Services to provide band instruction for our
students. Students had the opportunity to try a
few instruments to determine their interests and
natural ability on August 28.
If you have questions please contact 847-805-1800.
Stanton is making some changes to the way we use our Accelerated
Reader program! Students will now be involved in creating their own
personal goals each quarter throughout the year. We hope this will
encourage them to set attainable goals based on their commitment to
reading without the stress of needing to earn “points”. These goals will
not be part of their ELA grade, but will earn them several AR reading
incentives throughout the year. Naturally, we want all students to read
daily with the hope of maximum growth in vocabulary and
comprehension. Daily reading practice also reduces stress and
improves memory, focus and concentration. We hope you will continue
to encourage your child to visit the library and find books that will
inspire a love for reading!

Stanton Adds 4 Exploratory Classes
With the passing of ESSA, Every Student Succeeds Act,
Stanton has added four exploratory classes to the master
schedule. The new classes are art, STEM, music, and
Spanish. Throughout the year, students will be enrolled
in one class each quarter. According to Mr. Sefcik, “This
is an exciting time for Stanton School. Middle school is
a time where our students can explore new subjects.
While they learn from a curriculum steeped in core
courses, our kids will also benefit from exploratory
subjects. Adding fine arts, technology, and a foreign
language to our schedule has been a goal of mine for
several years. These courses are beneficial because
they expose our kids to areas not focused on that could
influence their interests and future educational pursuits.”

Recycled beverage tabs help support your local Ronald McDonald
House program, by providing a “home-away-from-home” for the families of seriously ill children being treated in nearby hospitals. Save your tabs and have your child turn them in to school. Tabs from any cans will do! (soda, pet food, soup) At the end of the school year, a donation will be made on behalf of District 114. Please contact the
school office if you have any questions.
