Dear Stanton Families,
Welcome to Fall! Stanton Middle School students have adjusted well to our new and unusual school year.
In the month of October we will conclude our fall sports schedule.
Progress Book is a great way to monitor your student’s academic success. To assist your student, please look at
their grades on Progress Book. If your child is having any academic concerns, please email the teacher or call the
Counseling Department at 330-676-8620. Our counselors work with each team and offer organizational groups to
assist students.
To enable scholastic improvement, we also have tutors that work with teams and offer tutoring to all SMS students
(face to face and remote).
We want each and every student to achieve success at Stanton, and to that end we will support your student’s
progress in any way possible!
Enjoy the autumn season!

Times are so very different right now! We may be seeing some of your smiling faces only through Google Meets! We want to make sure you know that we are here to help in all the ways that we have been before AND MORE! We are walking this journey together for academic and social/emotional success.
Your school counselors are helping students and families to be successful daily! We will be doing our guidance lessons in the classroom and starting groups very soon! We will be getting creative and using technology to help your student!
As you and your students navigate this new way of learning, please do not hesitate to reach out to us. We are here to help as you create new schedules, get organized, and adjust to all of the changes that have come our way.
We are thankful to have many resources available to us at Stanton through agencies that work directly within our school to meet the social and emotional needs of our students. Both Children’s Advantage and Coleman Professional Services are available to see your child at school (or remotely) to help address their needs.
Our school-based mental health program is an off-shoot of the Stanton School Counselor’s Department and provides longer-term support to students who are experiencing ongoing school problems, friend problems, personal problems or other behavioral healthcare issues in the home.
The overall goal of the program is to improve the students’ method of dealing with their problems and/or learning alternative coping skills. There is no charge for these services. If you are interested, contact your child’s school counselor for the proper forms by calling (330) 676-8620.
As we begin study skills, academic success, social skills, and various needs based groups, please feel free to contact your grade level school counselor if you’d be interested in exploring having your child participate.

Tidbit of the Month: Organizational Skills
-American School Counselor Association
The middle school years can bring many challenges for students.
Amongst these challenges is the problem of disorganization.
Why are organizational skills so important?
✔ Research done by Kerr and Zigmond has shown that teachers view
organizational skills as “crucial for student success”.
✔ Students who are disorganized have a greater chance of receiving lower grades,
completing fewer assignments, being less motivated to achieve, experience more
frustration associated with school and have poorer self-esteem.
✔ The ultimate goal of K-12 education is to prepare students for the real world
therefore, it is important to recognize that post-secondary life requires good
organizational skills. Teaching students the importance of being organized while
children are in school will help them be more successful in college, their careers,
and throughout the remainder of their lives.
Use the following survey to help determine if your child is struggling with organization:
Check all statements that apply:
o I often forget to take home my homework assignments.
o I often forget what homework I have to do.
o I often forget to turn in my completed homework
o My parents do not help me stay organized.
o I do not know when and how my teachers assign homework.
o I often forget to take home books or needed supplies.
o I often forget when assignments and tests are due.
o I do not have a regular study space and time.
o I often wait until the last minute to start my homework/studying.
o I often leave supplies at home that need to come to school.
o I do not know how to break projects into smaller tasks.
o I am often late to class.
o I often forget to bring my supplies to class.
o I have trouble finding things in my book bag.
o I have trouble finding things in my locker.
o I do not take good notes in class.
o I fall behind in school when I am absent.
o I think my grades would be better if I were more organized.
![Page 4: Stanton Middle School NewsIf you are interested, contact your child’s school counselor for the proper forms by calling (330) 676-8620. As we begin study skills, academic success,](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022071213/602a289377d25c36ab2f25fe/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
o I do not know how to get myself organized.
How many statements were true for your child? If you feel your child could use
additional support to improve on their organizational skills, we would be happy to help.
Contact your grade level school counselor at (330) 676-8620.
To help support your child’s organizational skills:
● Do not assume that your child knows how to be organized.
● Recognize that organization takes time.
● Have consistent organization expectations.
● Engage in school-home collaboration.
● Provide your child with positive support and reinforcement.
● Remember the ultimate goal is school success and developing positive
self-esteem.
● Allow your child to see you practicing organizational skills.
Grief is defined as "A deep sorrow, especially caused by someone's death." Coping with the
loss of a family member or a close friend may be one of the most difficult things that many of us
face. As adults it is difficult. For adolescents, it can be just as challenging since many middle
school students that experience a death are experiencing that loss for the first time. Teens can
be very resilient, but not managing grief can lead to other mental health concerns if the
adolescent that is grieving is not supported. As a school community and as a counseling
department, we know that there are many students that are still struggling with the death of their
friend, Logan Carter, that died in a boating accident in June. If your son or daughter is
struggling, or you believe he or she would benefit from some conversation about Logan or grief
in general, please contact Mr. Goshe, 8th grade school counselor, at (330) 676-8620. Short
term counseling support, grief group work, and long term counseling referrals are available for
both the in-person and remote students.

Parent Teacher Conferences:
Conferences will be in the evenings (5:00pm-8:00pm) on Thursday, October 22, 2020 and Thursday,
October 29, 2020. They will also be held on Tuesday, November 24, 2020 from 8:00am-3:00pm. Some
teams may hold additional conference times; contact your child’s teachers for more information.
Conferences provide an excellent opportunity for parents to both give and receive information about
their middle school student. Here are some questions that parents may want to ask:
Homework – Is my child’s homework completed thoroughly, accurately, and on time?
Class Participation – Does my child ask questions, volunteer answers, and participate in
discussion?
Organization – Does my child seem organized? Does he/she come to class prepared?
Academic Success – How is my child doing in this class? Is my child working up to his/her
potential? Is this class appropriate for my child’s ability level?
Classroom Time Management – Does my child use class time wisely?
Focus – Does my child pay attention in class?
Social Adjustment – Is my child respectful and courteous to teachers and classmates? Does my
child appear to get along with other students?
Strengths and Weaknesses – What are my child’s strengths? Where does my child need to
improve?
Additional Questions – Do you have any advice or suggestions for my child or me? What is the
best way for me to contact you if I have a question or concern in the future?
If you would like the counselor to be part of the conference, please let your child’s teachers know. We
would be happy to attend and support your children.
Thank You

Dear Stanton Parents,
We want your child to be happy and successful in school and in life, and we know that you feel the
same.
To help support that achievement, we want to ask for your commitment to your child’s good school
attendance. The evidence is clear: children with good attendance are more likely to be successful in
school. High attendance rates are linked to high student achievement.
Every minute in school counts. Missing school even 10% of the time has a significant negative impact on
reading and math achievement. Because of this, the State of Ohio has passed a new law (HB410) with
attendance requirements for all students.
House Bill 410 has set the following attendance definitions:
• Excessive Absence = missing 38 or more hours of school in one month OR 65 or more hours in
one school year with or without an excuse. (Students with Excessive Absences may have an
Attendance Intervention Plan initiated).
• Habitual Truancy = 30 or more consecutive hours OR 42 hours in a month OR 72 or more hours
in a year without an excuse.
• Chronic Absence = missing 10 percent of the school year with or without an excuse.
Whenever your child is absent, you must call the Stanton Attendance Line (330)678-7500 and leave a
message including the reason; OR you may call the main office (330)676-8600. Failure to notify will
result in an unexcused absence for that day.
If your child was seen by a doctor, dentist, orthodontist, etc., please turn in a doctor’s note to the
main office. Or you may ask your doctor to fax the excuse to us (330)676-8605.
If you do not have a family physician, you may be eligible to receive medical services through state
programs. Our district nurse, Stephanie Young, can assist you. She can be reached at (330)676-8617.
Please contact our main office with any attendance questions or concerns. We want your student to be
in attendance throughout the school year in order to be compliant with state law and also receive the
best education possible. Thank you for all you do to support your child’s academic success!
![Page 17: Stanton Middle School NewsIf you are interested, contact your child’s school counselor for the proper forms by calling (330) 676-8620. Appointment Pick-Up Procedures
Are you picking your student up during the day for an appointment?
Here are the steps to follow:
1. Send a note with your child that morning stating when they will be picked up and by
whom(or call the main office). Your student should give the note to their homeroom
teacher. Homeroom teachers will write a dismissal pass for the student to come to the
office at the appropriate time.
2. Call Stanton (330)676-8600 when you are here and we will send your student out.
Please use the Hudson Road entrance.
3. Please get a doctor’s note if possible. If you return the same day, your student must sign
back in at the main office.
Thank you for your assistance!
**If your student becomes ill during the school day, they should report to the
school clinic and see the Nursing Assistant. You will then be contacted if your
student needs to be picked up from school. Also, if your student is ill (or will not
be attending for another reason) and will not be attending school (in person or
online) please contact Stanton so your student can be marked absent. This is for
students attending 100% remote (cohort C) and cohort A or B students.**
Please make sure your information is current in final forms, email address and phone number,
so that we can reach you with needed information. E-mails and recorded phone messages are
often sent throughout the year.
Please contact the office if you need to update any information (330) 676-8600.

ENCOURAGING STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY
Parents, if you are dropping off items for your child (lunches, instruments,
projects, homework, gym clothes, keys, sports equipment, etc.), please note:
In accordance with our school policy, we will NOT interrupt instructional time to
deliver items or for parents to speak to children.
Students may be notified at lunch or TIE, or students may check the pick-up table
outside the main office at any time with a pass from their teacher.
Thank you for helping us to keep the focus on academic achievement!
Please note that per the Transportation Department, students are not permitted
to ride a different bus home.
This is due to busses being filled and also due to consideration of safety issues.
If you have any questions/concerns, please call the bus garage (330) 676-7690.
