Chapter Members:
As Stanly Community College Phi Beta Lambda Chapter President, I am pleased to present our
Local Chapter Annual Business Report. We have strived to “elevate our futures” during this
forty-fourth year of our chapter. We have been involved in local, state, and national PBL
activities in addition to being visible on our campus and in the community as we have met the
goals of our organization.
Two of the highlights of the year are the election of two of our members as state officers and the
“Diamond Chapter” award at the National Leadership Conference. Although they later
transferred to universities, Katrina Sams and Amy Ray were Stanly Community College
students when they were elected as president and historian of NCPBL. Only 26 chapters in the
nation received “Diamond Chapter” awards in celebration of Future Business Leaders of
America-Phi Beta Lambda’s 75th Anniversary as a national organization. SCC’s delegates at the
national conference received special ribbons for their name badges.
Our chapter has participated in a myriad of activities including hosting a state fall “Kick-Off”
and attending the spring “Tip-Off.” We also participated in all the activities of the state Fall
Leadership Development Conference, and we received a “Gold Star Chapter” award and were
excited that our table won First Place at the Mardi Gras social!
March of Dimes has continued to be a priority. During PBL Month, we sponsored speakers each
week, recognized our advisers, and presented our Business Person of the Year award. This report
will reflect on those and the other campus, community, and PBL activities of the year.
My best wishes to our members attending the upcoming State Leadership Conference and then
the 2018 National Leadership Conference in Baltimore in June. With one another and through
the year’s programs and projects, we have “elevated” our friendships and our futures.

SIZE OF SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY
Established in July 1971, Stanly Community College was established in July 1971. Seated and
online enrollment is approximately 3,245, and business-related curriculums include Business
Administration, Accounting, and Information Systems Networking. The SCC PBL chapter
was chartered in 1974 and has attended every State Leadership Conference, 40 of 42 National
Leadership Conferences, and the chapter has received state and national “Gold Seal Chapter”
designations 37 years! Albemarle, North Carolina, is the county seat of Stanly County, located
approximately 45 miles east of Charlotte, and the city population is approximately 15,000. The
economy has transitioned from a traditionally textile and agriculture community to mobile
home, as well as cotton and poultry industries. An increasing number of residents travel to
Charlotte to work, especially business graduates, who find employment in the many banks in
Charlotte. Seven county commissioners comprise the decision-making group for Stanly
County. Stanly Community College PBL was pleased to have Martha Sue Harris Hall, the
1981 chapter president, elected as the first woman elected as a commissioner (1994).

RECRUITMENT ACTIVITIES
“A Legacy of Leadership” Brochures “Elevate Your Future” has been the membership recruitment theme for the year. Membership brochures and membership forms were distributed to business-related classes. The cover used the official theme logo and included pictures from the 206-2017 year. Additional text issued an “invitation” to join PBL and basics about the organization. This theme was repeated throughout recruitment materials and displays including a bulletin board in the Snyder Building where business classes are held.
Chapter Social Media
A chapter Facebook page and an Instagram account continued to facilitate communication of
chapter news and events in a social media format and to reach online students. Business cards
with the social media links have been distributed at recruitment events and networking
opportunities, and have been made consistently available on the bulletin board and with other
recruitment materials. A marquee at the entrance to the campus displays up-to-date information
on PBL meetings, activities, and membership deadlines, and a brochure with a list of PBL
competitive events was distributed in all business-related classes during February. The brochure
was sent electronically to all students enrolled in business.
Display Cases and Bulletin Board Located on the second floor of the Snyder Building at SCC are trophies, plaques, and awards received by the chapter over its history. Included are the 1974 chartering certificate and the newest item, the 2017 state and national Gold Seal Chapter plaques. The large display is one of the best recruitment tools for the chapter. A nearby large bulletin board is used to display chapter photos, recruitment brochures, and news articles.
College Cable TV Station, Website, and Facebook, E-blast, Calendar and Newsflush
Announcements regarding Phi Beta Lambda activities and membership were carried throughout
the year on the campus closed circuit television monitors located in the entries to each building
and the campus cafeteria. These are carried on the local cable station, SCC TV – Channel 21.
The homepage of the Stanly Community College website carries all the news articles that have
been released about the college. Throughout the year, numerous articles and pictures about PBL
were listed and archived, again providing valuable recruitment materials for potential members
as they checked the website. A banner on the homepage promoted National PBL Week and had
a “for more information about PBL” link including a photo gallery of 150 PBL pictures. The
SCC “Newsflush,” posted in campus bathrooms, carried PBL announcements.
State Recruitment Award
At the 2017 Fall Leadership Conference, Stanly Community College entered the “Presidents’
Award” competition for the best display of recruitment materials. The display won Third Place.
LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
2017 State Leadership Development Conference
The 63rd Annual State Leadership Conference was held in Charlotte, North Carolina, April 4-6, 2017, at the Hilton Charlotte University Place. The theme for the conference was “A Legacy of Leadership.” Several former SCC PBL officers and a current PD-F member attended the event
7
and helped judge the competitive events. In addition to the business and competitive events activities, the conference included an SLC Leadership Development series featuring eight
workshops. Delegates who attended at least four of the sessions received certificates recognizing their participating in this leadership development program. Four delegates from the chapter participated in the series and received certificates. Chapter members also designed and worked
at the campaign booths for our candidates for state office.
2017 Stanly Community College Leadership and Honors Ceremony The Annual SCC Student Leadership Convocation and Luncheon for 2017 was held in May. Nine students were selected to be recognized for their leadership roles in campus activities and organizations during the year, and Amy Ray and Dony Santos were the PBL recipients. Student Life Director Rick Oelfke introduced the recipients and presented each with a college medallion. Katrina Sams was presented a special award recognizing her election as PBL state president.
2017 Fall Leadership Development Conference Stanly Community College had ten members and two advisers at the State Phi Beta Lambda Fall Leadership Conference at the Wyndham Hotel in Greensboro on November 3-4. “Elevate Your Fuure” was the theme. SCC members participated in networking, idea exchange sessions, and workshops. Each of the workshop sessions included a topic related to Leadership Development, Business/Entrepreneurship, Career Preparation, and PBL Development, and delegates could attend a cross section of topics or put together a complete track on those areas. A highlight of the conference was a Mardi Gras-themed social. SCC won First Place for the best decorated table! SCC was also presented with the “Gold Star Chapter” award for accomplishing a list of state goals by the October 20 initial membership reporting date. Chapter President Britney Pouch accepted the “Gold Star” award from Ms. Bobbie Brown, North Carolina PBL’s first state president, when she was a student in 1954 at East Carolina University.
Election, Officer Planning Meetings, Installation Returning members met in August at Pizza Hut for a social and then on campus to make plans for the year and design recruitment materials. Officers were nominated and elected.
Leadership Speaker Rick Gardner
On February 5th, PBL members and Stanly Community College students were invited to the first speaker series for National PBL month. The speaker series was held at Stanly Community, which was convenient to the members and students. The first speaker to be welcomed and positively impact PBL members, and SCC students was Rick Gardener. Rick Gardener shared his tips on professional dress code for success.
CAREER EXPLORATION AND PREPARATION
February Career Exploration and Preparation Speakers On February 20, Kim Mcllwaine, owner of Il Bella Gardens, was welcomed as a speaker for a
chapter meeting open to the college. Ms. Mcllwaine effectively discussed entrepreneurship skills
and tips for future success while sharing her business story.
Mr. Chad Nichols, a former bank manager, spoke to the chapter on February 13th about financial
planning and money-related issues. Topics were how to avoid accumulating debt, maintaining a
good credit score and investments. Several college employees also attended the meeting.
8
On February 27th, Mr. Phil Baucom and Mr. Joe Pollard introduced and taught the PBL chapter
the latest trends in Technology for personal and business use. Their topics also covered privacy.
Business Clothing Closet
Realizing many students do not have appropriate attire for job interviews, PBL organized a
business clothing closet as part of the college’s food pantry. Items are donated, and students can
take as need with no charge or without returning.
Civil Rights Monitoring Committee
Britney Pouch, Monica Chang, Lyric Medley, and Sara Bryant were asked to serve as the four
student representatives on the college’s Civil Rights Monitoring Committee.
BUSINESS PARTNERSHIPS
March of Dimes
The chapter set up a booth at the campus FallFest to raise money for March of Dimes. The
booth coordinated with the “Pirates of SCC” theme. PBL’ers Shiny Vang and Samantha Vang
did a painting of a pirate and a mermaid with faces cut out for students and staff to have photos
done. Little Tokyo Restaurant and Eastgate Cinema provided giftcards to be used for a drawing.
Downtown Development Association’s “College Night”
On August 24th, the Downtown Development Association sponsored a “College Night” at
Market Station. Businesses had booths, there was a DJ, and food was available. Students from
SCC and Pfeiffer University were invited to participate. SCC PBL did a “Legacy of Leadership”
display with pictures of local leaders when they were PBL members. Little Tokyo and Eastgate
Theater provided gifts for a raffle for March of Dimes.
Chamber Of Commerce, Downtown Development Association, Small Business Center Tour
On November 15th, in recognition of American Enterprise Day, SCC PBL toured the Stanly
County Chamber of Commerce, the SCC Economic Development and Small Business Center,
and the Albemarle Downtown Development Corporation, all located in Downtown Albemarle.
At each location, the president or director spoke to the group about the work of the organization
and its influence on job growth. Ms. Kathy Almond, 1982 SCC PBL president, is the recently
selected president of the Albemarle/Stanly County Chamber of Commerce, and former PBL
member Alicia Herrin is director of the Small Business Center. Following the tour, the group
had supper at Second Street Sundries Coffee and Café, which opened in 2015, with a mission to
provide employment opportunities for individuals with autism.
Lunch with City Councilman
Chapter members and advisers met with former PBL member Dexter Townsend, Albemarle City
Councilman and the 2017 Stanly County Citizen of the Year. He spoke about several areas the
City Council was working on, including a Downtown renovation project. An article about Mr.
Townsend in “Discovering Stanly” magazine included references to his PBL involvement.
“Food Lion Feeds” Food Drive
PBL sponsored a major campus food drive and raised over 1,400 pounds of canned goods for
the Food Lion Grocery Stores “Food Lion Feeds” program. (Details are in a later section.)
9
CHAPTER FUNDRAISING
Since new campus guidelines have limited organization fund-raising projects, the college has
been extremely generous to PBL in providing funds for participating in state and national
conferences. Registration, hotel, and travel expenses totally nearly $6,000 were covered through
Student Activity Fee Funds for the 2017 State Leadership Conference, the 2017 National
Leadership Conference in Anaheim, California, the 2017 State Fall Leadership Development
Conference, and the up-coming 2018 State Leadership Conference. The college allowed PBL
the exception of collecting at FallFest and SpringFling for March of Dimes. The treasury of the
chapter is handled through the SCC Fiscal Affairs Office. Chapter dues are $25 ($5 local, $10
state, $10 national). From chapter dues, $35 contributions are made to the NCPBL Professional
Division-Foundation scholarship and general funds and a dollar per member to March of Dimes.
PUBLIC RELATIONS ACTIVITIES AND CHAPTER PUBLICITY
Local Newspapers, Radio and TV Throughout the year PBL submitted information on the chapter to the SCC public information officer, who prepared releases for approximately 20 area newspapers and radio stations. The local newspaper also carried photographs with the releases on a number of articles, including the chapter’s participation in conferences, the Business Person of the Year selection, and awards won by the chapter. These releases are archived and obtained by linking to http:/www.thesnaponline.com/ and searching the keyword Phi Beta Lambda. PBL utilized the SCC TV station with chapter announcements and pictures promoting events and programs. The local cable station carried the County Commissioners’ meeting at which PBL members spoke.
National Publicity
A picture of chapter officers with County Commissioner, Mr. Gene McIntyre, signing a FBLA-
PBL Week proclamation was featured in the Spring 2017 edition of the PBL Business Leader.
Mr. Hazlett was interviewed by National President Kimberly Clark and featured on the national
website and social media on Friday of National PBL Week.
Campus Publicity and SCC Website PBL announcements are carried often on the SCC electronic marquee at the campus entrance, as
well as SCC’s “Newsflush” flyers that are posted monthly in bathrooms. Once each semester, the chapter is allowed to send an email “blast” to all registered students. Articles about PBL are carried on the college’s website under the “news release” listing on the front page.
Phi Beta Lambda State Newsletter SCC submitted articles for the state “Chapter News” website sections for both the fall and spring deadlines. The fall edition featured pictures of the SCC delegation at the national conference. The Spring 2018 newsletter featured pictures of chapter delegates at the County Commissioners’ meeting to have a FBLA-PBL Week Proclamation signed and the presentation of the Business Person of the Year award to Ms. Tracey Hayes.
Campus On-going PBL Promotions In addition to recruitment, the chapter used a large bulletin board in the main hallway of the Snyder Building for PBL promotions. Copies of news articles, pictures from PBL activities, and announcements are posted. An additional display with the chapter’s state and national awards is housed in the Snyder Building lobby. PBL had representatives attend and give reports at every monthly Student Government Association meeting during the year

The commissioners meeting is televised. A banner on SCC’s website recognized FLBA-PBL Week.
Business Person of the Year Program In February, the chapter named Ms. Hanh Tran as its Business Person of the Year. Ms. Tran is
the owner of two Little Tokyo restaurants in Albemarle and is involved in many community
activities. The award was presented during a dinner meeting at River Wild.
OTHER COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS
SGA Coordinated Projects
In addition to the fundraisers held for March of Dimes and the homeless shelter meal, the
chapter has been involved in community service projects sponsored by the college’s Student
Government Association, including blood drives and collections for the county Pregnancy
Resource Center and the county Relay for Life (cancer). Britney Pouch, Monica Chang and
Giselle Chavez represented PBL as SGA Senators and coordinated the chapter’s participation.
SCC “Halloween on the Hill” and “Holiday on the Hill”
Two major community activities that PBL assisted with were the “Halloween on the Hill” and
“Holiday on the Hill” evenings. On Halloween, members helped decorate the campus and
provide activities for a safe Halloween for local children. Candy was distributed at various
places. PBL members also assisted with the clean-up afterward. In December, a similar
“Holiday on the Hill” activity was held. In addition to campus decorations, Santa was present
for pictures with the children (and the PBL’ers!). Both activities attracted large crowds.
NC FBLA
To assist NC Future Business Leaders of America, chapter members judged high school and
middle-level Gold Seal Chapter applicants, and Mr. Hazlett led a workshop on Parliamentary
Procedure at the FBLA State Leadership Conference.
Food Lion’s “Put Hunger Out of Business” and West Stanly Christian Ministries
A major project of the chapter during February was the “Put Hunger Out of Business”
campaign sponsored by Food Lion Grocery Store’s “Food Lion Feeds” program and the NC
PBL Professional Division-Foundation. The chapter collected over a 1,400 pounds of canned
food to contribute to West Stanly Christian Ministries. Members did promotional brochures
and campus announcements and then placed blue buckets at the doors of buildings.
