A 57-YEAR-old woman, whowas shot during a farmattack,survived after pretending to
be dead while lying against the bodyof her dead husband.
Sixty-two-year-old Andy Rajpauland his wife Kamla, both employeesat the Stanger Training Centre, wereleaving their Glendale homeonMon-daymorning inaNissan1400bakkiewhentheywereattackedbytwobala-clava-clad males.
According to Reaction Unit SouthAfrica (Rusa) headPremBalram, thesuspects opened fire on the vehicleshooting Rajpaul several times.
"He then lost control of his vehicleand crashed into an abandonedbuilding on the farm. His wife, whowasalsoshot, laynext toherbleedinghusband. The suspects believed shewas also dead due to her being cov-ered in her husband’s blood. Theythenfledthescenewithouttakinganyvaluables.
“Twofarmworkers,whowereget-
ting into the bakkie at the time of theincident, fled the scene andwere un-harmed."
BalramsaidKamla escapeddeathas her handbag had shielded herfrom several 9mm rounds.
"She however, sustained a bulletwound and was rushed to a privatehospital."
Balram said that Reaction UnitSouth Africawerecalledouttosearchthe vast area with a helicopter.
"At 6:30am the Rusa helicopterlifted off from Verulam and searched
the Glendale area for the suspects."Assistancetobothvictimswasde-
layed as the female lay in shock forover an hour next to her husband be-fore using her cellphone to call forhelp. ThevictimsarerelativesofVer-ulam-basedpoliceofficerWarrantOf-ficer P. Indarjee."
It was established that Rajpaul leftearly that morning to pick up a busused to transport children withspecial needs to the school.
"He was in possession of a 9mmpistol, which he could not use due to
the surprise attack.“Eight spent9mmcartridgeswere
found at the scene and it is believedthat several more rounds were firedat the victim’s vehicle," said Balram.

DEALING yet another blow tothe indignity and the squalidconditionsassociatedwith liv-
ing in an informal settlement, Kwa-Zulu-Natal Premier Senzo Mchunumarkedhis100days inofficewiththehand-overofhousestoGroutvilleres-idents.
The homes are part of a R274mil-lion informal settlement upgrade attwo housing projects which werelaunched on Friday.
Mchunuwas accompanied byHu-man Settlement and Public WorksMECRaviPillayandKwaDukuzaMu-nicipality mayor Ricardo Mthembu.
The Groutville Priority 2 InformalSettlement Upgrade Project in Ward11’s eTsheni and Njekani areas ofGroutville will see a yield of almost2 000 units, while the Groutville
Priority 5 in Ward 9’s Mnyundwiniarea will see a yield of 1 000 units.
Both projects are set to benefit3 000 peoplewhohave been living inshacks with no proper sanitation,water or electricity.
The twopriority projectswill haveelectricity, water and sanitation thusrestoring the dignity of the beneficia-ries. Theproject is due tobe complet-ed in July 2015.
The premier and his delegationhanded over two houses with furni-ture and groceries during the visit.
“We are here to fulfil your aspira-tions because you voted for a govern-ment that listens anddelivers. This iswhat Inkosi Luthuli fought for untilhis untimely death.
“Importantly, in September asHeritage Month, we get the opportu-nity to strengthen the solidarityamongthepeopleofthisprovince.We
mustcelebrate thecontributionof thepeopleofKwaZulu-Natal fromallrac-es towards socio-economic develop-ment.
“As KZN we have developed ourown provincial growth developmentwhich puts emphasis on ensuring aquality of life for our people. We canproclaim without any doubt that westill careabout the implementationofthe vision of Inkosi Albert Luthuli.”
Pillay told the Weekly that thisproject is locatedwithinthepremier’s100-day target he had set.
“Immediately after we took officeinMay this year, he basically crackedthe whip and said these are the tar-gets we had set, [so] roll up yoursleeves and get things moving.“There was weekly monitoring of
the progress tomeet the 100-day tar-get whichwasmet long before time,”said Pillay.

FOUR people were arrested and chargedwith public violence on Monday after theystoned police stationed in Ashville during aservice delivery protest.
Community members of Ashville andsurrounding areas burnt tyres and trees,stoned passers-by and police and blockedroads with garbage and skips demandingproper service delivery from the KwaDukuzaLocal and iLembe District Municipalities.
Their demands included water, electrici-ty and proper sanitation.
The scene became violent and the publicpolicing unit had to be brought in to calmthe situation.
One officer was struck on the foreheadwith a stone and had to be taken to AlberlitoHospital for treatment.
Protesters near Ashville Primary also at-tempted to attack teachers forcing them toshut down and leave school.
According to one teacher, the pupils at
the school were terrified and some evensoiled themselves from fear.
“It was a scary situation and we wereforced to use back roads to escape theprotesters.”
The protesting continued on Tuesdaymorning forcing the school to remainclosed.
Suspects, Sibusiso Manzi (46), Bhekani
Sithole (20), Sandile Mhlongo (40) andSabelo Luthuli (18), who are believed tobe responsible for the stoning, appeared inthe KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court on Tues-day.
Three were released on R500 bail eachwhile Luthuli was let off with a warning.
The municipalities had not responded tothe protests at the time of going to press.

THE South African DemocraticTeachers Union (Sadtu) hasembarked on rolling mass ac-
tion that will “bring education in theiLembe District to a standstill”, de-manding the resolution of 20 griev-ances.
These include the removal ofdistrict education manager CarolineVelakazi and Maphumulo circuitmanagers EB Gcabashe and T. Ntuli.
At a mass meeting on Monday atSadtu Park, Sadtu regional secretaryMthokozisi Mpunzana said sinceVelakazi assumed her duties, therehas been a decline in proactive rela-
tions with the district she is “sup-posed to manage”.
“Herconductof treatingourunionlikeheradministrationdeskhasbeenstomached tothe extremelimit, we [as]Sadtu are nolonger pre-pared to be ill-treated as if weare still underapartheid.
“Velakazihas never at-tended a single district task team(DTT)meeting, but instead sends thedistrict human resources co-ordina-
tor to chair them on her behalf. Weview such conduct as abdication ofduties. She reverses DTT decisionswhenever there are some which she
does not feelcomfortablewith.
“She faileddismally toconvene a sin-gle districtprincipal’smeeting.“Velakazi
has never putin place an induction programme fornewly appointed and promoted edu-cation workers under her district,
hence we have a litany of educationworkers and Sadtu members in par-ticular, misconducting themselvesand getting investigated, charged,tried and harshly sanctioned by thevery office that she occupies.”
ThesecretarysaidVelakazicollud-ed with circuit managers who are“her friends and cronies” to make“irregular appointments of educa-tors, in particular school principals”.
“Velakazi appointed a Gingindlo-vu circuit manager to co-ordinateKwaDukuza coremanagement crite-ria and used him as her guillotine toopen unfounded investigationsagainst some members, leaders andformer leaders of Sadtu,” saidMpun-
zana.Velakzai was also criticised for
abusingherofficepowersbystoppingthe St. Christopher Primary post-se-lection process for a principal duringthe day of shortlisting.
“She misrepresented the head ofdepartment’s office by telling Sadtuthat she acted upon the instructionfrom the HOD, and that was in viola-tionofHRMCircularno.15/2014pro-cedure manual.
“Velakaziandthedisplacedcircuitmanager, Mr Msane, attended agoverning bodymeeting ofWhebedeSchooland instructed thatmeeting toco-opt two principals into theirinterviewing committee whose taskwas to conduct a principalship post-selection process and such actamount to post-fixing,” the secretarysaid.
The meeting resolved to intensifythe mass action over the next fewdays, and to follow this up with astrike that would “bring education toa standstill” if thedepartment didnotmeet their demands.
“We have given them ample timeto apply their minds and resolve theissues, but to no avail,” she said.

Some residents complained thatthe protesters had thrown stones attheir vehicles and windows, while oth-
problem in the neighbourhood.“We often experience blackouts or
power surges that damage our appli-ances. It makes me so angry, but I canunderstand why these people areforced to steal electricity.”
One of the protesters, who spoketo the Weekly, said they were demon-strating because the KwaDukuzamunicipalelectricians hadgoneto theinformal settlement over the week-end and disconnected their illegalelectricity connections.
“How are we expected to survivewithout electricity? If they don’t wantus to steal electricity then they mustgive us power in the shacks. We arehuman beings too,” said ZakheleMadalose, who has lived in the settle-ment for five years.

THE KwaDukuza Crime Prevention Unit offi-cersarewarningresidents tobecareful andonthe lookout for suspicious people near ATMsand even in business establishments and res-taurants when using their bank cards, as cardcloning, resulting in fraud, is on the increase.
This comes after KwaDukuza Municipalityemployee Neil Peters had R1 500 taken fromhis account on Thursday morning.

workplace to draw cash.“However, I noticed twomales standing to-
gether.WhentheysawmewalkingtowardstheATM, one of them went to the ATM and actedlikehewaswithdrawingcash.When I insertedmycard into themachine, it askedme to inserta 10-digit code.
“By then, bothmenwere standingoneitherside of me. I got suspicious and cancelled mytransaction. However, my card did not comeout. I quickly phoned my bank and told themthat me card had been

NORTH Coast resident Cheryl Lancellasrecently helped a crippled KwaDukuzaman, Dumisane Buthelezi, by getting
sponsorship for a prosthetic leg, but he hassince disappeared and she is concerned abouthim.
“I first met a man with no leg, now I have aleg and noman to fit into it. I am concerned asto hiswell-being and appeal to the communityfor information [on his whereabouts],” saidLancellas.
Lancellassaidshewalkedpastayoungmansitting on the pavement a while ago andstopped to talk tohimandnoticedhiscrutches.
Buthelezi was originally from Jozini but isnow living with his brother in KwaDukuza.
Hewas ina taxi thatwas involved inanacci-dent inMarch andlosthis lowerleft leg, includ-ing the knee cap.
“Hewastryingtohobblearoundonabrokenpair of crutches which were cutting into, anddamaging his hands. I felt so sympathetic as Ihavebrokenmyfoot three timesandcanrelateto the discomfort of crutches so I decided to tryand get this young man a new leg.”

IHAVE always wanted to write satire, sim-ply to provide comic relief for the AverageJoe that doesn’t involve alcohol or fan-
tasies about roundhouse kicking his boss.But I can’t write satire, which is why my
wife had to offer up the introductorysentence.
Not being Devastatingly Witty or Monu-mentallyIntellectualleavesmein theratherunenviable position of having to writesomething serious, abiding by the rules andstructure, and all the while having to watchthat I don’t thump into the often hiddenrocks of libel and false facts.
Breaking rules comes with consequenc-es, and in a newsroom, those consequences
often involve a haggard sub-editor whomoans at you for incorrect grammar andtense usage, as if these things are key to theUN’s Millennium Development Goals.
But then again, as people who have verylittle to lose — invariably the very rich or thevery poor — like saying, rules are meant tobe broken, because it is then that we discov-er something about ourselves and eachother.
The recent turbulence in Parliament isa case in point.
I do not sit in the EFF or Julius Malemafan seats; I find the party and the man tobe fascist in nature and morally lacking inpractice.
Led by Malema, EFF members chanted“pay back the money” during a question-and-answer session with the president afterhe sidestepped yet another Nkandla ques-tion.
The ANC-led government has subse-quently moved to suspend the EFF.
To show that it was in control of Parlia-ment, ANC officials called in the minister ofdefence, who told the packed newsroom:“We are the last line of defence”.
This would be understandable if CapeTown had a reputation as a meeting pointfor terrorists and separatists who walk thestreets with RPGs.
In reality, the ANC overreacted. And it didso to an embarrassing degree.
By suspending the EFF, the governmentwill be creating a martyr.
A simple warning would have driven thepoint home; a penalty on their salarieswould have been better.
The EFF members may have spoken outof turn and disrupted the rules of the house,but they did not threaten or hurt anyonephysically. Pride, however, took a knock.
But the rule breaking was important.Parliament is, in theory, a place of accounta-bility.
Accountability involves answering ques-tions.
It is a place of robust debate, where thefeelings of the people — through their elect-ed representatives — can be heard.
The ANC, for all it has done for this greatnation, could have handled the situationdifferently had it put more weight on wis-dom and less on ego.
A little wisdom needed

The ANC needs bet-ter strategists. Its inter-nal media machine isfailing.
Without rethinkinghow it is being per-ceived, the ANC willneed neither fine intel-lectuals nor satirists torip it to shreds. Its once-ardent followers aredoing that already.

MUSLIMS view gambling as a self-destructive vicethat does colossal harm to society.
It gives false hope to people by portraying an es-cape from poverty and difficulty, to that of affluenceand luxury but it instead plunges them into debt anddeeper poverty.
The social impact of gambling can range fromproductivity loss, bankruptcy, suicide, crime, divorceand rehabilitation costs. It is never confined to thegambler but adversely affects spouses, children andothers.
Pathological gambling is a progressive diseasethat devastates all involved. Studies have found astrong correlation between greater availability ofgambling and pathological gambling, hence ouraversion to the request of an increase in machinesat The Ritz.
The only people that benefit from gambling arethe operators. With gambling, money from the pooris being relocated to the pockets of the rich.
Needless to say, there is a positive correlation be-tween crime and gambling. Gambling addicts resortto criminal activities to finance their habit. Our soci-ety definitely does not need to add fuel to an alreadyroaring fire of crime.
Gambling accounts for a huge slice of householdexpenditure. Problem gambling among the elderlyeats steadily at their retirement savings, money uponwhich they are dependant.
We urge the KwaDukuza Municipality, people ofinfluence and all other concerned citizens to pleasemobilise and oppose this impending disaster.
As Dr James Doughney said a couple of years agoat a gambling conference: "The harm is more unjust,more unconscionable, because government have aduty to protect."

If the rising noise levels in our clinic
are anything to go by the Crow team arein for another busy baby season.
Over the past three weeks alone,more than 130 sick, injured and or-phaned animals have been admitted toour centre, including several of our firstspring babies that have, among otherthings, fallen victim to the strongwinds we have recently experienced inDurban.
In addition to gearing up for babyseason, the Crow team have also hadtheir hands full with final preparationsfor the release of the over 350 animalsthat are currently at our centre.
Many of these animals have remainedin the safety of our care throughout thelong winter months and are now readyto go to their respective new homes inthe wild.

SUNBROOK Volleyball Club consoli-dated their position at the summit ofthe KwaDukuza Sports Association(KDSA)-sponsored KwaDukuza Vol-leyball Association (KDVA) SocialLeague log table after trouncing arch-rivals Virgo in straight sets (2-0) at theassociation courts on Thursday night.
After a disappointing 2-1 lossagainst rookies Cool Leaders in mid-August the Stanger Heights-basedSunbrook outfit were determined tomake amends and followed it up witha fluent 2-1 win against Teachers Stylea fortnight ago.
Sunbrook, who lost their openingfirst round league encounter againstthe Glenhills-based Virgo outfit in Aprilarrived at the courts in high spirits onThursday, flaunting their new red, blueand white silks and determined to seekvengeance.
Virgo, in 4th place on the log stand-ing behind pace setters Sunbrook, Dar-nall United and Teachers Style arefighting hard for a podium finish. Theytook a commanding 11-8 lead, upset-ting the rhythm of their rivals.
But, after an early timeout, Sun-brook’s twin-attackers, Sugen Munienand Calley Ganasen upped their tempoto catch the Virgo rearguard flat-foot-ed. They capitalized on the good setsby Suman Chetty to guide Sunbrook to
a comfortable 25-20 win in the first set.The lanky Sunbrook central attack-
er Leon Ramsamy started off the 2ndset in a fiery mode and apart frombeating the Virgo blockers with con-summate ease, giving his side a com-manding 15-9 lead.
Virgo, tried desperately to stay inthe hunt for honours, but man-of-the-match Ganasen (who is a strong con-tender for the player of the year)wreaked havoc with his thunderous at-tacks to guide his side to a comfortable25-18 win.
Manager-cum-coach of the Sun-brook outfit, Devan Moonsamy said:“We are beautifully perched at the topof the log table at the end of the 2ndround of the league and with one moreround of league fixtures ahead of us,it is important that the boys do not getcarried away.”
Inanearlier KDSASocial Leaguefix-ture, Teachers Style pulled out all thestops in their hard fought 25-23; 25-21win against Cool League.

K9 REAL Celtic of KwaDukuza LocalFootball Association and Real Connectionof Ndwedwe have qualified to participate inthe 2014/2015 season of the SAFA IlembeRegional League which is expected to getunderway on September 20.
Six teams comprising of Thembeni Foot-ball Club and Celtic of KwaDukuza, YoungParadise and Real Connection of Ndwedwe,Six Dollarz and Mapumulo Heroes of Ma-phumulo assembled in KwaDukuza on Sun-day to contest the playoffs.
Matches were played on a league basisin two pools with the top team in each poolautomatically qualifying for SAFA IlembeRegional League status.
At the Recreation Ground, Thembenisuffered a shock 1-0 defeat at the hands ofReal Connection in their opening fixture.Midfielder Lungisani “Sosha” Gumedescored for the Ndwedwe-based Real Con-nection outfit.
Despite the early setback, Thembenibouncedbacktowinningwaysintheir2nd fix-ture after trouncing Six Dollarz 5-1. PhilaniDladla, Sivuyizo Mazwi, Siphiwe Gumede,Xolani Mbhele and substitute VumaniNcube scored for Thembeni.
Real Connection needed just a pointfrom their match against Six Dollarz in thehope of finishing at the top of their group.Man-of-the-match Gumede scored yetagain for Real Connection to give his side a1-0 lead going into the break.
Real Connection conceded a late goalmidway into the 2nd half, but held on desper-ately for a hard earned 1-1 draw to secure astarting place in the SAFA Ilembe RegionalLeague (Ndwedwe Stream).
An ecstatic Real Connection outfitcoach, Nathi Maphumulo said: “My boysworked extremely hard last season to clinchthe Ndwedwe Premier League and were re-warded for their hard work today by qualify-ing for the SAFA Ilembe Regional League”.
Meanwhile, Celtic trounced MaphumuloHeroes 3-1 at the Manor Ground on Sundayin their opening fixture and followed it upwith a fluent 2-0 win against Young Para-dise to finish at the top of their pool to quali-fy for the SAFA Ilembe Regional League(KwaDukuza Stream).
The SAFA Ilembe Regional League willbe contested in three streams, namelyKwaDukuza, Maphumulo and Ndwedwewith the winner in each pool advancing tothe SAFA Vodacom League playoffs at theend of the 2014/2015 season.

Cup after notching up a thrilling 2-1 winagainst Sunbrook in the final played beforea large crowd at the association courts onFriday night.
Sunbrook, making their debut in thecorporate ranks, beefed up their squadwith the signing of former Powertrans stal-warts Neeraj Bageloo, Ahmed Essack andIsmail Essop.
Sunbrook stunned overwhelming fa-vourites Grove End to forge ahead 7-2 be-fore the lanky Neil Perumal moved into thefront court to reduce the deficit to threepoints (7-10). Essack troubled the GroveEnd rearguard with his wicked over-arm
serve to extend Sunbrook’s lead (12-7).Trailing 15-18 Grove End took their first
timeout and whatever was said to the ladsby coach, Neven Baldeo seemed to have
produced the magic. Sunbrook hit a stone-wall as Grove End blocked solidly and ham-mered the ball with venom to level thescores as 19-19. Perumal and Preggie Pillaycombined superbly to guide Grove End toa thrilling 25-19 win.
Sunbrook introduced Devan Moon-samy at the start of the second set in thehope of swinging the pendulum in their fa-vour.
The match was evenly poised with thescores locked at 5-5 and yet again at 12-12before Moonsamy scored successive win-ners (much to the delight of the Sunbrookfaithfuls) to give Sunbrook a slender 17-15lead.
Essack enjoyed a bevy of good setsfrom Bageloo and notched up two beau-ties to extend Sunbrook’s lead (21-17). En-joying a 4-point cushion, fans expectedSunbrook to canter to victory, but a goodsolid block from the lanky Kamal Singh fol-lowed by a deft service by the pint-sizedClive Kista which left the Sunbrook rear-guard clutching straws, saw Grove End re-duce the deficit to 2-points (19-21).
However, unforced errors by Grove Endat the death allowed Sunbrook to clinchthe hard-fought second set (25-23) andlevel the scores (1-1).
In the third and decisive set, Sunbrookstarted the game with Essack playing at
power and he relished the opportunity togive his side a commanding 5-2 lead. WithEssackmovingtotheback-courtGroveEndquickly snuffed out the deficit to level thescores at 7-7.
Nishen Govender, who had a quietgame (judging by his high standard of per-formance) scored a winner down the lineto give Sunbrook a narrow 8-7 lead at thechange of sides. Sunbrook forged ahead11-8 through the combination of Bagelooand Essop.
Perumal reduced the deficit to a soli-tary point (10-11) before moving to theback-court. Sunbrook capitalized on the“danger-man” (Perumal) away from thefront-court and stepped on the acceleratorto move within 2-points (13-10) of clinch-ing the Pie World Cup.
But, the undefeated Grove End outfit,seeking their third corporate silverware ofthe 2014 season, did not throw in thetowel, instead silenced their critics to grabvictory (16-14) from the jaws of death andadd the Pie World Cup to their silverwaretrophy.

Officials of Mandeni LFA are expecting amaximum of 16 teams to participate in Satur-day’s junior soccer showpiece.
Matches will be played in four pools on aleague basis. The winner in each pool will ad-vance to the semi-final stages of the tourna-ment.
