One of the focal points of myrecent All Hands Talk was adiscussion of the recom-mendations of the Communi-cations Task Force. Here I willdiscuss three of thoserecommendations: the newposition of Director of

Communications, the SLAC Employee AwardProgram and the Suggestion Box program.

I am establishing a new position in thelaboratory, entitled "Director of the SLAC Office forCommunications." A committee chaired by GregLoew that includes SLAC and University Staff, aswell as external members, has begun a search to fillthis position. The Director of the SLAC Office forCommunications will report to me and will beresponsible for coordinating a broad agenda ofcommunications tasks.

In this issue you will also read about the SLACEmployee Award Program. The purpose of thisprogram is to recognize employees who exhibitexceptional citizenship by promoting a positive andharmonious work environment at SLAC. The programwill honor employees who go out of their way to helpothers, who consistently treat co-workers withcourtesy and respect, and who work cooperativelywith others. These are employees that undertakevolunteer tasks that go beyond their normal courseof duty. SLAC employees and users are free tonominate individuals for this award. Up to 50recipients will be selected each year by a committee

of employees chosen to represent all areas of theSLAC workplace.

I am also pleased to announce that we will soonintroduce a one-year pilot "Suggestion Box" program.The system will encourage the SLAC community tosubmit ideas on improving our laboratory operationor encouraging a work environment that better valuesstaff contributions and productivity. The system willpermit either personal or anonymous suggestions viathe Web, email or fill-in forms to be provided by theLaboratory. As appropriate or at the request of thesuggestor, confidentiality will be honored.Suggestions will be reviewed by a committeecomposed of representatives from each division.Suggestors will receive an acknowledgment for eachsuggestion submitted, and a time frame for a responsewill be established. All suggestions and responses,except those protected by confidentiality, will beposted on the Web.

Finally, I would like to draw your attention tothe Employee Referral Bonus Program that weintroduced last year. This program will provide acash bonus to regular, benefits-eligible SLAC staff forreferring applicants who are successfully hired atSLAC. The minimum award is $200 to an employeewho refers a successful applicant for any posted job.The value of the award is assumed to $200 unless ahigher amount is announced with the Job Posting. Inthe case of difficult to fill positions, the cash awardcan be as high as $4000. The candidates for hiringmust be external to SLAC and the University. SLAC Honored for Near-Zero Air EmissionsTHE CITY OF MENLO PARK EnvironmentalBeautification Commission has given SLAC a 2000Environmental Quality Award in recognition of theLab's success in reducing air pollution. Members ofthe Environmental Beautification Commissionpresented the award, which recognized SLAC for"exceptional resource conservation," at the January 23City Council meeting.

To support our research mission, SLAC has avariety of highly advanced fabrication techniques, someof which utilize solvents to clean metal parts. WhileSLAC at all times operated within the emissions limits Frank Carney and Deidre Digrandespecified by both local and federal regulations, the Environmental Commission of themachining process nonetheless resulted in the emission Park, present the award to MFD'sof several thousand pounds of chlorinated solvent peryear into the atmosphere.

The phasing out of certain solvents mandated bythe 1990 Clean Air Act led SLAC to develop analternative to solvent cleaning.

"This was a pioneering effort since the alternativedegreaser we chose had not previously been used inthe State of California and it was a considerableinvestment for the Lab," said SLAC Director JonathanDorfan. The amount of chlorinated solvent airemissions dropped to near zero in the year 2000, froma level of 2,000 pounds in 1999.

Rich Cellamare from the Waste ManagementDepartment was the one who originally got started onthe idea back in 1993. He chaired a committee toevaluate alternative cleaning methods to replace ozone-depleting ones. This collaborative process involvedfour departments and took two years to complete."There's no doubt that a project like this calls for a lotof teamwork," said Cellamare. "I'm really pleased thatit all worked out for the best."

Representing SLAC at the award ceremony wereButch Byers from the Environment, Safety and HealthDivision and Ali Farvid from the MechanicalFabrication Department. Byers was the one whonoticed that Menlo Park gave awards forenvironmental action and he submitted thenomination on behalf of the Lab. Farvid's group inthe Plating Shop was where the main action tookplace. "I'm delighted that the efforts of our highlytrained and dedicated staff members are beingrecognized by the community," said Dorfan.

Also attending the event at the City Councilmeeting were Stanford University Provost JohnEtchemendy, Stanford Government Affairs DirectorLarry Horton, Stanford Environment Division HeadLarry Gibbs, SLAC Acting Deputy Director GregLoew, and SLAC Public Information Officer P.A.Moore.

Announcing the SLAC Employee Award ProgramOUTLINED BELOW ISTHE Employee AwardJProgram recently an-nounced by SLAC DirectorJonathan Dorfan. Thosewho wish to serve on the

selection committee may volunteer by sending theirnames in writing to Brenda Warren at MS 22 or byemail to [email protected] by February 15."We hope to have a 12-person committee that willreflect all the divisions and departments," said Warren.

The first work of the selection committee will beto discuss how often awards will be presented, howlong committee members will serve, the process forselection of winners and the type of ceremony thatwould be appropriate to announce winners. This willinvolve a time commitment, so those who volunteershould consult with their management.

Nominations for awards are due April 15 andnomination forms can be found online or hard copiescan be obtained from your department administratoror from Brenda Warren in Human Resources.

Purpose: The purpose of the Employee Award programis to recognize SLAC employees who exhibitexceptional citizenship by promoting a positive andharmonious work environment at SLAC. This programrecognizes such actions as going out of one's way tohelp others, consistently treating others with courtesyand respect, working cooperatively with others,pitching in when help is needed, volunteering forSLAC activities not directly related to one's job,showing unusual grace under pressure, and any variety

of other positive ways in which people make our workenvironment more inviting. Please note thatoutstanding work performance should continue to berecognized through the annual performance evaluationand salary setting process.

Eligibility: All SLAC and University employeesassigned to SLAC are eligible to receive a SLACEmployee Award. A maximum of 50 employees will berecognized in each calendar year.

Nominations: All SLAC employees and users cannominate individuals for this award. Nominationinformation and forms will be distributed by variousmeans in January. If you wish to nominate a person forthis award, you will be asked to complete thenomination form which will primarily ask for examplesof the nominee's community spirit as demonstrated byhis/her positive behaviors at work.

Nominations will go to a selection committeecomposed of employees representing a cross section ofthe SLAC employee population from all divisions. Thecommittee will review all of the nominations and selectup to 50 people who meet the criteria.

Recognition: Each Employee Award winner willreceive a framed certificate of recognition, a letter fromthe Director that will go into the Personnel file, lunchwith the Directorate, and a commemorative gift fromthe Laboratory. Looking to the future, any employeewho receives an Employee Award five times will bepermanently honored and no longer eligible for theannual award.

SLAC Holiday PartySLAC HOSTED THE ANNUAL holidaycelebration with several twists this past year. Forone thing, there were minimal lines (see picturelower left). Anyone who has been here for anylength of time will remember when the line to thecafeteria snaked all the way to the Central Lab.Another switch was the Santa Claus, whodistributed door prizes with zeal, sometimesstopping to toss a gift-wrapped t-shirt into thecrowd. There were two sketch artists kept busydrawing caricatures of willing subjects. Musicwas provided by the Los Altos Main Street Singers(pictured below) and food catered by the SLACC-f^ -%LTi\.' Second HarvestFood Drive

Stephanie Carlson reported that SLAC contributed atotal of 1,373 pounds of food and $42.00 in cashdonations. Since last year's collection was only 800pounds, this was quite an improvement! In addition tothe barrels placed in various buildings, a drive-throughfood drop off was held one morning. Thanks to allthose who participated in the food drive and in theGiving Tree that was located in the Cafeteria. A

How did they manage their property along withall their other responsibilities? Barbara Johnson of theHuman Resources Department said, "Everyone lets meknow when property changes are made. I immediatelynotify Property Control so they can update theirrecords." We also got comments from Bob Kirby,Engineering Physicist, from the Physical ElectronicsDepartment, who said, "We are very aware of ourproperty control responsibilities, we know where ourequipment is."

Recently, SLAC submitted its report to the DOEthat tells of the property that was not located oninventory. DOE does a random sample and physicallyverifies the location and custodian against the inventoryrecords for accuracy.

Along with the Annual Inventory, you can helpSLAC achieve a successful "find rate" by notifyingProperty Control when you move or transferequipment.

Film Crew Follows Physicist for a DayIN DECEMBER, a Real Science film crew from SanJose's PBS station KTEH was on site to film a day in thelife of a scientist. They followed magnet physicistCherrill Spencer for most of a day, filming in locationslike the BABAR detector area, the Magnet Shop, theMagnet Measuring Lab and the overlook above theresearch yard.

The video will be distributed via satellite to PBSstations nationwide in the spring and then will bewatched by about 10 million middle and high schoolstudents. Many watch the Real Science series in schoolas part of their science curriculum, and the programintroduces the students to different careers in thesciences. Bob Todaro Appointed Head of PurchasingIN HIS NEWASSIGNMENT asPurchasing Officer,Bob Todaro bringsconsiderablepurchasing and ad-ministrationexpertise. He plansto use this experienceto accomplish a majorcommunicationsobjective over thenext year for thePurchasing Depart-ment, which includesPurchasing, Ship-

ping, Receiving, Stores and Accounts Payable."We need to have more open communication with

the requestor community so that we can earn the trustand respect for the department as professionals,"explained Todaro. An open door policy and willingnessto listen and provide alternative solutions will be atthe forefront of his teamwork approach. "Customerservice is at the top rung of his ladder," said one of thePurchasing Department Buyers.

Todaro holds a Masters Degree in PublicAdministration. He previously worked with the DOEOakland Operations Office as a Contracting Officer,and with Lockheed Missiles and Space Company inSunnyvale as a Senior Subcontract ManagementSpecialist. He joined SLAC in June 1994 as an Associate

Purchasing Officer.Over the next 2-5 years, Todaro plans to move the

Purchasing Department toward an online orderingsystem, putting the SLAC community directly in touchwith the vendor. Users would have order placingaccess to various vendor commodities without goingthrough Purchasing. He will be promoting ongoingwork with BIS enhancements to the PeopleSoft systemto "let the system work for us instead of the other wayaround." The goal is to implement a more full-bodiedinformation system and reduce the frustrationexperienced by the user community.

Other improvements Todaro intends to implementinclude the mentoring and training of PurchasingDepartment employees, particularly alternate backupand succession planning for all personnel in keypositions. For the Shipping/Receiving/Stores areas,delivery time and shipments are being studied to findways to improve the processes. Work has alreadybegun on revising the Stores Catalog to include picturesfor many items.

Does this man have a hobby? Certainly-and itinvolves getting his hands dirty; Todaro findsgardening very therapeutic. If that's not enough, heenjoys traveling to Europe, in particular Italy wherehe's been known to embark on many a pizza, pasta andpastry tour! And just recently, he fulfilled a life-longdream of hiking the Great Wall of China. SupervisingSLAC Purchasing should be easy after such a majorfeat.

Holiday Giving Tree Successful

ALTHOUGH IT RECEIVED LITTLE publicity, theGiving Tree was a great success. A tree wasdecorated in the Cafeteria, not with bulbs and lights,but with requests from those less fortunate for aspecial holiday present. Lynn Thanash, HR TrainingCoordinator and head of the Holiday PartyCommittee, contacted the charitable organizationthis year after the Committee decided to considerother means of giving besides the Toy Drive.

"We hope to make this an annual event," saidCommittee Member Teri Peterson. "In fact, JerryJobe would like to use the Giving Tree for hisBusiness Services Division group's gift giving nextyear instead of the Secret Santa held in the past."

Perform and support world-class research in high-energy physics, particle astrophysics and disciplinesusing synchrotron radiation.

SSRL's Barger Honored by Health Physics Society

THE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA CHAPTER of theHealth Physics Society (NCC HPS) and the AmericanNuclear Society Northern California Section (ANSNCS) held a joint meeeting last September where JohnBarger of SSRL gave a presentation entitled, ActinideScience and Radiation Protection: Procedures at an XASBeam Line, SSRL BL 11-2.

ES&H Resolutions for theNew Millennium

THOUGHTS OF THE NEW year bringthoughts of resolutions. So how doesthis topic relate to the environment,safety, and health of you and yourcolleagues? We can all resolve to take

better care ot our own neairn ana environment in verysimple ways.

My first resolution fits in the Health category. I willgarden more-people say it relieves stress. I already tryto recycle material to the maximum both at home and atwork to help the Environment, but I could do bettercreating less-print fewer items and use my discardedcardboard boxes for Goodwill donations. The Safety iseasy-think before I lift. I catch myself cheating on therule of proper lifting even though I know better.

So let yourself indulge in thinking a bit about ES&Hresolutions before the year advances too far.
