What:Three generator sets – model C2250D5 at 11kV (total 2,680 kW).One NER with three contactors.DMC300 Digital Master Control System with hot plc standbyand full BMS (Building Management Service) interface.Three sets of inlet and discharge attenuation.Three day tanks and connective fuel systems.

Purpose:Provision of reliable source of stand-by power to ensure Edith Cavell Hospital remains 100% operational in the eventof a power blackout.

Primary choice factors:• Cummins Power Generation products’ ability to get on line

and take critical building load within the 15 seconds C44Hospital Specification requirement

• Established technical expertise/ access to technical support team.

• Cummins Power Generation’s ability to achieve short leadtime and deliver a system capable of future expansion.

Cummins Power Generation provides round theclock power protection for Stamford andPeterborough Hospitals Foundation Trust

PETERBOROUGH, CAMBRIDGESHIRE, UK – The GreaterPeterborough Health Investment Plan (GPHIP) is a £335million project to build Peterborough City Hospital, the CityCare Centre and the Cavell Centre (mental health unit) inPeterborough by 2010. The joint venture is being led by PFIconsortium Progress Health.

Due to open in 2010, the hospital is being built on the site ofthe original Edith Cavell Hospital and will include 612 inpatientbeds, an emergency care centre, high-tech diagnostics unit, women and children’s unit, specialist rehabilitation unit, renaldialysis and a multi-disciplinary training centre. Following theopening, the existing Edith Cavell Hospital will be demolished.

On the same site, the hospital’s 102 bed mental health unit, run by the Trust includes adult acute, psychiatric intensivecare and a special unit for people with learning disabilities, centralised dining area, fitness, recreational, staff facilities andgarden areas. When both projects are completed the EdithCavell Hospital site will become known as the Edith CavellHealthcare Campus.

InstallationThe risk of a mains power failure represents a major hazardfor any hospital, particularly those offering critical healthservices such as operating theatres and intensive care units,as in the case of Edith Cavell Hospital. In order to meet theneeds of the project Cummins UK worked closely with theclient and consultant to develop a system to meet theexacting criteria of this project. The new standby powersolution by Cummins will ensure that essential care isunaffected by any interruptions to mains power.

As soon as a power blackout occurs, the standby systemkicks in automatically with the generators being synchronisedto produce full load power for the entire premises within the15-second hospital specification requirement.

Cummins supplied generators capable of taking 100% loadtransient and not stalling. With the AmpSentry alternatorprotection system, the first generator set online is able toenergise the whole 11kV ring while the other two units aresynchronising with the first unit and still keep within the 15-second requirement.

Cummins additionally supplied:• Fuel systems, fire and leak detection with a ‘double knock’

fuel safety system to prevent and minimise any fuelspillages.

• Air inlet and discharge systems• Exhaust gas silencer systems and flues• Main power, small power and communications cabling work

running equipment and distribution systems.

Cummins Control System SolutionFor this application Cummins delivered a user-friendly, highlyresilient and re-configurable system that fully accommodatesthe specific design requirements for the site. The completeoperation is controlled by a Cummins Power Generation DMC300 Digital Master Controller which can be programmed toprovide automatic mains paralleling, distribution breakercontrol, load management control, touch screen manualinterfacing/data logging/ recording, and exercising of the unitsin parallel with mains supply. Each generator set has its ownon-board synchroniser and controller enabling it to alsooperate on an autonomous basis.

When it came to came to the selection process, CumminsPower Generation was chosen for its superior products, service and technical solutions. This resulted in theemergency power protection for the hospital being taken careof 24/7 using Cummins Power Generation equipment.
