Letter From The Stylist
Emily Baldwin
aking time out of the day-to-day routine to reassess your life at the start of a new year can be overwhelming. However, this personal investment can be extremely rewarding. As a mother of three, working full time can bring its challenges, schedule
conflicts, and disruptions. On the other hand, when planned well, my life is more enjoyable and full of good surprises. I have found that without stepping away from the mad rush of all the directions we are pulled, you can get lost in finding your true self. Life has its ups and downs, but remaining true to who you are brings a peace of mind and a level of genuine enjoyment. I encourage you to take the time this spring to step out of your normal routine and redefine who you are. With this in mind, you will be able to plan your wardrobe and work in the trends of this season to compliment your individuality and lifestyle.
This season is about bold colors and patterns as seen on the runways of designers from Diane Von Furstenberg to elizabeth and James. Have fun with these looks by mixing and matching. Another prevalent look is that of sophistication through polished and dignified fabrics and styles. This trend was seen in the collections of multiple designers, most significantly 3.1 Phillip Lim. Another notable trend is the return of preppy casual with stripes, reds, navy, and blouses on the forefront.
After scouring for the best pieces from top designers, I am pleasedthat there is a large variety in trends. This expanse of options allows forspring and summer fashions to cater to casual women, sophisticatedwomen, and event driven women. I have styled three sections to show howthe looks from the runway can be worn in everyday life.
Take the time to find your individuality for spring and summer. Take the time to clean out your closet. Take the time to find fashion pieces that express your personality and your lifestyle.
Have fun with spring and summer 2011: seventies chic, preppy nautical, and the 40’s lady.

Letter From The Stylist
Matt Baldwin
he landscape of menswear seems to be changing about half the time, while the other half seems to be staying the same. This is something I have been exploring as I prepare to open up my first
Baldwin men’s shop in August of 2011. In the last two issues, I have referenced Steve McQueen, using his iconic lifestyle as inspiration for our products. What I have come to realize about McQueen is that he not only understood good design that was practical to his life, but the pieces of clothing he wore were also timeless in design. I believe that 50% of men’s clothing changes (trends) while the other 50% (classics) stays the same. I often hear people refer to a classic piece as a trend, thinking they can’t wear something now that they wore ten or twenty years ago. The reality is that the “trend” resurfaces because of its great original design and functionality. Take, for instance, a pair of black denim, which received a bad rap in the late 80’s and early 90’s. However, in the end, it’s a great alternative to wearing indigo and is a great neutral, and every man should own a pair.
I do see the move towards twill pants as an alternative to the classic denim in your closet. Look for a great fitting khaki, navy or stone colored pant for the spring. Men should also invest in high quality shoes which will last for a lifetime.
Here are my recommendations for spring 2011: a tailored navy or grey suit, a pair of Red Wing boots, a pair of American-made dry selvage denim, oxford button down shirts that fit like they were tailored, and a classic dress shoe. If bought correctly, you will spend more money per piece, but each item will last longer and serve its purpose with an unmatched confidence. You will ultimately spend less money because you buy fewer items, giving you a better value in the end. Buy American, shop local, and shop with an expert.
enjoy 2011. Live life to the fullest.

The West Coastto the East Coast.
This spring/summer 2011, we contrast 1960’s surf culture in an epic east Coast versus West Coast battle.
Relaxed and colorful define the West Coast while clean, preppy and classic neutral colors define the east Coast. Both have their own sense of personal refinement.
