ALFRED THIES Alfred Thies, William's son, was married
December 18, 1910 to Clara Niemann, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Niemann, Sr. of Avoca. They farmed the river farm. A son, Clarence, was born in 1912. In March, 1916. they moved to the home place in Pleasant 'Township. A daughter, Helen, was born in 1917 and another daughter, Eleanor, in 1927. Clara passed away in January, 1929.
Alfred married Bertha Reineke of Hancock in 1930, and they continued farming until 1948 -when they moved to Avoca . Alfred lived a full life of retirement for twenty years. He became ill in 1968 and passed away in August 1969 at the age of 82. His widow, Bertha Reineke Thies is living at Oakland Manor, Oakland.
CLARENCE THIES Clarence Thies. Alfred's son, farmed with
his father after graduating from high school in 1929. He served with the army during WW II about three and one-half years spending almost two years in India and China. He returned to farming after the war.
Clarence married Merna Grobe of Oakland June, 1950. Merna graduated from Drake University, Des Moines and taught business subjects in high schools in Iowa before her marriage. They lived and farmed in Pleasant Township until October. 1972 when they moved to Avoca, and the home place consisting of 360 acres was sold.
To this union one son, Duane, was born. Duane is now a ~tudent at Northwest Missouri State University.
Clarence, Merna and Duane are active members of the Hancock Methodist Church where Clarence is an officer. Merna is a church officer, pianist and substitute organist. Duane has been a Sunday school teacher. MYF officer and pianist.
Clarence held several offices in Farm Bureau and FS board, held most of the offices in Veterans of Foreign Wars and is a member of American Legion.
Merna was girls' 4-H club leader 5~ years, holds offices in both the district and local VFW Auxiliary and American Legion Auxiliary.
Duane is a member of Kappa Delta Pi National Honor Society, English Honor Society, Journalism Honor Society and has been chosen to be in Who's Who in University and College Students.
Clarence's sister Helen works for Al l State Insurance, Skokie, Illinois. Sister Eleanor married Blaine Vandeventer and lives in Ames.
FREDERICK THIES Frederick and Catherine Schroeder Thies
came to LeClaire, Iowa from Mecklenburg. Schw.erise, Germany in 1856 with a son Charles and daughter Mary. Son William Thies was born at LeCiat re November 18, 1860 and daughter Ida in 1867.
Charles came to a farm in Pleasant Township in 1876, William joined him in 1876 and their parents and sister Ida joined them a year later. Mary had married John Petersen. Ida married Henry Bornholdt.
Frederick died July 1. 1884 and Catherine 434 died March 12, 1906.
WILLIAM THIES William Thies was born November 18,
1860 at LeClaire. Iowa. At age sixteen. he joined his older brorher Charles at Avoca. Later, his parents and sister Ida joined them. Together they farmed the 160 acres in Pleasant Township Frederick had acquired. William bought 120 acres adjoining for $21 an acre.
William married Lena Horst in 1880. She died in 1887 leaving a five-day-old infant son Alfred. Later, William moved to Avoca with his son and widowed mother where William became district manager for Hodgson Elevator Company buying grain - lots of ear corn.
He remarried in 1890 to Amelia Sievers. Three children were born to them, Bertha and two who died at an early age from scarlet fever.
William Thies acquired the land where William True, a grandson, now lives where he fed cattle. He served o n Avoca City council and as mayor, Avoca's board of education. and secretary of Pottawattamie Counry Fair Association. He later was a director and Vice President of the Avoca State Bank. William served two terms in the Iowa State House of Representatives, 1933-1936.
He died July, 1948.
ROBERT WILUAM THOMAS Robert William Thomas is a descendant
of W illiam Bassett. who came to America from England in 1621. His father , William Thomas was the eldest son of Herbert and Mary (Smith) Thomas.
William married Emma Roennow. daughter of John and Elizabeth (Glissmann} Roennow. They lived on a farm in the Quick vicinity all their married lives. (the same farm Robert lives on today}. To them was born Louise, John and Robert.
Louise married Harry Cha mbers and moved to California. Harry died 10 years later. Their children were: Stanley. Virginia and Harriet. Stanley was killed in an airplane accident during flight training in the U.S. Air Force.
John died at age 20. Robert graduated from Treynor High
School and farmed with his father. He married Ruby Dau, daughter of Emil and Annie (Kay} Dau of WalnuL She taught school before their marriage a nd again after their children reached teen age. Their sons are: Kent and Alan.
Kent attended college at Marysville. Mo. and Clarinda Community College. He married Lynda Lacoma of Omaha. They have two daughters: Holly a nd Kayla. Kent is a sales representative in Omaha and Lincoln.
Alan graduated fro m Dana College a t Blair, Nebraska. He married JoAnne McCoy of Greeley, Nebraska. They have a son, Tye. Alan teaches in the Omaha school system.
Robert has had a chain saw service and sales business for many years on his farm. He also. services and sells garden tractors, mowers, tillers, welders and snowmobiles.
GLENDON AND MARLENE THOMAS
Marlene Marie Ross Thomas was born on May 17. 1940. as the oldest of the five children of Merlyn and Zeda Ross of Underwood. Iowa. She started to school in the fall
of 1945 in the same physical buillding from which her parents graduated. She became a band member in the :seventh gratde playing alto saxophone. In high school sbre was ome of the organizers of the Top Hat!s, a dance band. which played after baskeU»all games. Pep Club, Student Council, Yearfnook Staff and the Junior and Senior Class P'lays occ.u~ pied her free time away froiJl her job of hot lunch accounts re c e ivable bo«>kkeeper. After school hours were spent wi th 4- H activities as a member of the Norwalk Fut urettes and a charter member of tbre Norwalk Go-Getters. An appearance on <an Omaha television program as a member ll':lf the winning Junior 4-H demonstration team \/Vas especially exciting in 1954. A ttrip to the Waterloo National Dairy Cattle Congress in 1957 was the award For being a ~member of the runner-up Senior demonstrartion team. As a member of the c ounty pouliitry judging team. trips were made to other cmunlles and local fairs_ Graduation in 1958 from Underwood Community High School Wtas only lhe beginning of a journey around thr world wi th the first stop in Washingtoll., D.C. as .an employee of the Federal Government.
It was in the Nation's Capitol tlbat she met and married her husband. Glemdon Earl Thomas, a native of Silver Point, Tennessee. Glen was on active duty with 1the United States Army. As a member of Uncle Sam's team. the Thomases were sent <around tthe world. Son Randall Jay· was biQJI'n at F<>rt Belvoir. Virginia, on October 311., 1960. and daughter Michelle Malia was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on April 19, 1963. <Other tours of duty were spent in Fort Huacehuca, Arizona. Costa Mesa, California amd Hyattsville. Maryland. Additionally, Glen ser"ed in Japan. Vietnam and Korea. With retSrement from the Army in 1975 tht!: Thomases chose Fairfax, Virginia as their halest home. The field of data processing is 1the chosen profession for both Marlene ana:! Glen; .she with the Federal Government as .a computer systems analyst and he with priiwa te industry as a computer systems analysrt/programmer. A mini-computer in their l.bome is not only a hobby but a useful and pa;actical t<>ol for financial recordkeeping. The~ are actt4ve in the Parent Teache r Associar.iion: havJng served as officers in local PT A:l.s in Maryland and Virginia. Gardening om two acres in Fairfax. Virginia, has replaced! farming on 160 acres in Underwood. Iowa. an all INlays but spiritually.
