CALLFORPRESENTATIONS(ExtendedtoSeptember1st)
TheBaltimoreImmigrationSummitisaone-dayeventwhichbringstogetheracademics,government,serviceproviders,activists,communityleaders,andothersworkingwithandforimmigrantsinourregion.Baltimoreanditssurroundingsuburbsisanareawithagrowinganddiverseimmigrantpopulation,andhasalocalgovernmentthatviewsimmigrantsasanimportantpartoftheregion’songoingresurgence.Thethemeofthisyear’sSummitis“StandUp,BeHeard,GetInvolved.”Weareissuingacallforpresentationsforthe8thBaltimoreImmigrationSummit.Weencourageproposalsforfullpanels,butwillalsoacceptproposalsforindividualpresentationsthatcouldbepartofpanels.Proposalsshouldengagethethemeof“StandUp,BeHeard,GetInvolved”Immigrantsoftenfacehardshipsandundertakechallengingjourneystoarriveinthisnationseekingabetterfutureforthemselvesandtheirfamilies,andtobepartofourdiversecommunityinthegreaterBaltimoreregion.Howcanwe,atlocal,state,andnationallevelssupportimmigrantcommunitiesinourregionthroughthistransition,makingsuretheirrightsareprotectedandtheirvoicesareheard?Wewelcomepresentationsabout“bestpractices,”i.e.examplesofhowindividualsandgroups–immigrantandnative-born–areworkingtogethertoovercomechallengesrelatedtoimmigrationandhelppromoteanintegratedandsupportiveenvironmentthatprovidesopportunitiesforunderstandingandgrowthforall.Politicalparticipants,communityinvolvement,civicresponsibility,publicpolicy,healthcare,education,economicdevelopment,employmentandthearts,areamongtheareasthatcanbeexploredgiventhisyear’stheme,andweencouragesubmissionsinthoseareas.
Weencourageactivists,scholars,practitioners,governmentrepresentatives,andothertosubmitproposals.Preferencewillbegiventopanelproposalsthatincluderepresentativesofmorethanoneofthesegroups,and/orthatincluderepresentativesofvariousimmigrantandnativecommunities.Forexample,apanelonimmigrantsandeducationcouldincludeateacher,aresearcher,astudentandarepresentativeofanon-profitagencyhelpingtoimproveeducationalopportunitiesforimmigrants,orapanelonimmigrantorganizationscouldincluderepresentativesofthreeorfourdifferentimmigrantcommunities.Ifyouareinterestedinpresenting,butdonothavecontactstoputtogetherapanel,theBISPlanningCommitteewouldbehappytotrytohelpyougetintouchwithothersinyourareaofinterest.Pleaseemailusatimmigrationsummit@towson.eduEachpanelshouldbelimitedtoonehour,andsomeofthattimeshouldbedevotedtodiscussion.Panelsshouldincludetwotofourparticipants,allowingfor10-20minutepresentationsforeachparticipant.Foryourproposal,pleaseincludethefollowing:TitleofthesessionNameofeachparticipantInstitutional/OrganizationalAffiliationofeachparticipantFullContactInformationforeachparticipantDescriptionofthesession:In200-250words,pleasedescribethepaneltopic,aswellasthemake-upofthepanel(i.e.,howwilleachparticipantcontributetothediscussion).Topicsshouldfocusonsomeaspectofimmigrationand/orimmigrantsinBaltimore,whichwouldbeofinteresttoscholars,activists,practitioners,and/orgovernmentworkersinattendanceattheSummit.PleasesubmitproposalsasMSWordorRTFfilesto:
