REVIEWSUNDAYNIGHT COMEDYWEYMOUTH PAVILION
AUDIENCE members who hadseen what happened last timea comedy headliner cancelledwere left waiting in nervousanticipation of flying drinks ashost Tom Glover announced thesad news James Acaster wouldbe the second star not to makeit down to Weymouth Pavilion’scomedy night.Thankfully, in true professional
form, Glover revealed thatCanadian-born Tony Law wouldbe the replacement act of thenight. Before that, Glover laid down
the ground rules of holding onto pints firmly and introducedthe first comedy act of thenight, John Robins. Setting offwith an obvious observation ofthe quarter-full theatre, Johnquickly moved on to the topic oflads’ drinking culture, growingolder and the discovery of mengetting thrush. Though fallingflat at times, Robins managed togag his way back to a rip-roaringfinish that led the path for thenext act and probably the best ofthe evening.Pavilion returnee Luke
Honnoraty, best known forsupporting Russell Kane andMatt Richardson, upped thelevel of entertainment with hisself-deprecating and anecdotal
humour. Rounds of applausewere awarded for his tales of3am ice-cream feasts and shameover being confused with abouncy castle salesman at achild’s birthday party. Honnoratyhad the audience in the palm ofhis hand throughout the set, apower that was definitely lost in
the last act.TV star Tony Law, known
from shows such as Have I GotNews For You, Never Mind theBuzzcocks and 8 Out of 10 Cats, performed the unexpected.Surreal and quite often
improvised, Law’s off-the-wallcomedy was perhaps lost on
the Weymouth audience whowere at times laughing out ofnervousness. Still, by the end ofthe set many were won over byhis wackiness and, with that,Tony was off to drive back homein his much talked-about CitroenPicasso Xsara.
