Dear Collector,Welcome to 2002 and a year of stamps which typify thevariety and vitality of Australia.

The year starts with our Australia Day, AustralianLegends issue. As you know the honoured subjects’identities are kept secret until the awards ceremony. I willsay this, five eminent Australians will be honoured in2002. You might not find their names in conventionallists of heroes yet every day of the year their achievementstouch lives all over the world.

February sees the Golden Jubilee of the Accession ofQueen Elizabeth II. We will mark the occasion with aspecial issue (replacing our traditional April Queen’sBirthday issue for 2002). We discovered many lovelyphotographs of the young Queen in our archives andwere inspired to use them to create special postcardsand a book. The images are exquisite.

Later in February we will salute Australia’s motorracing history. Then in March and April we take on anautical theme: first with stamps featuring four ofAustralia’s lighthouses (March); then in April a jointissue with La Poste (France) commemorating theEncounter Bay meeting of Matthew Flinders and theFrench explorer, Nicolas Baudin.

May and June will see new issues in two definitivestamp ranges – International Panoramas and Natureof Australia, Desert.

Issues in the second half of the year will featuresubjects ranging from Aboriginal artist, AlbertNamatjira to Australian race horses, Christmas, andour second joint issue for the year, this time withThailand.

As well as previewing our program, I want to assureyou that I remain committed to reducing gradually thenumber of issues in our annual program.

This Bulletin starts with our first AustralianTerritory issue. Luis Chiang’s spectacular designs havemade our Lunar New Year issue a favourite withcollectors in Australia and overseas. This year we areintroducing a new product, the zodiac sheetlet, whichyou can see on the facing page. I think it will be a hit!So, until next time, gong xi fa cai

As in previous years, 12 Lunar New Yearanimal icons are printed in the gutter of the45c stamps. There is no special text or designin the $1.35 gutter.

The designsThe Year of the Horse stamps feature animage of a horse (in gold foil on the $1.35stamp) and the Chinese text for ‘the Year ofthe Horse’ in gold foil on both stamps.

The miniature sheet’s mounted postmanillustrates a popular poem that speaks of longing for home and family at the time of thenew year.

Traditionally people who were unable to gohome would include a painting symbolisingthis poem with their new year’s greeting totheir parents.

The zodiac sheetlet incorporates theminiature sheet and the 12 zodiac stamps. Each zodiac stamp features one of the 12creatures for which the years of the Chinesezodiac are named, and the creature’s name, written in Chinese.

From top to bottom (by row) the stamps are:5c - Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit15c - Dragon, Snake, Horse (gold foilhorse and text), Goat25c - Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig

Gold foil in each product is one commonelement. The products also share a vibrant,fiery-red background flecked with liquid gold.Like the chi it represents the background flowsfrom stamp to miniature sheet, then througheach of the zodiac stamps. Within each of thesestamps the resident creature flicks its tail, putting its own imprint on the flow beforepassing it along to the next year in the cycle.

Zodiac sheetlet

Golden Jubilee celebrationsThe Queen has said that she sees thecelebrations as an opportunity to express herthanks for the support and loyalty she hasenjoyed during her reign.

Because the Queen's Accession Day (6February) is the anniversary of the death of herfather – King George VI – it is not a suitabledate for public celebration. In England theGolden Jubilee will be celebrated in June, with aBank Holiday long weekend (3 and 4 June). The main celebrations for the Silver Jubilee in1977 were also held in June.
