2011 Australian Legends

The Australia Post Australian Legends Award has

been bestowed annually since 1997. It recognises

individuals for their significant contributions to the

development of Australian social and cultural life and

to national identity.

The recipients of the 2011 award each rose to prominence

during the 1970s, the period in which second-wave feminism

flourished, challenging the status quo. The progressive thinking,

passionate commitment and tireless work of our four recipients

have confronted fundamental issues of gender inequality, allowing

for profound changes to reshape the public and private experiences

of all Australians. Many of the rights we enjoy and take for granted

today have been achieved through their advocacy, counsel and efforts.

Australia Post is very pleased to recognise change advocate Eva Cox AO,

former justice Elizabeth Evatt AO, AC, academic and author Germaine Greer

and commentator and author Anne Summers AO.

ATA 2011 Membership IncentivesNew incentives for membership in the American Topical Association have been announced for 2011. Membership costs are $25 in the U.S. or $33 international.

Each new ATA member will receive two free ATA handbooks. One book is ATA HB 133, Adventures in Topical Stamp Collecting, the seminal work authored by George Griffenhagen and Jerome (Jerry) Husak. This color handbook is written for collectors of all topics and has in-depth information about exploring, expanding, storing, presenting, and exhibiting topical or thematic stamps.

The second free ATA handbook will be selected by the incoming ATA member from a list of 45 different books. The topics covered are as wide as the thematic field. They include Birds, Space, Women on Stamps, the Statue of Liberty, Abraham Lincoln, Christmas, Music, Sports, Horses, Orchids and Topicals for Seniors. The offer is good while handbook supplies last; if a chosen handbook is out of stock, a different book of the new member’s choice may be selected.

Postage for the free handbooks is included in the domestic membership cost, with the exception of one specific handbook. If ATA HB 138 on Railroads, a book containing several hundred pages, is selected, the incoming member will pay $5 postage cost.

The American Topical Association is the world’s largest organization for thematic or topical stamp collectors and the

largest affiliate of the American Philatelic Society. Its members have contributed to more than 550 checklists available to new and continuing members. The ATA has published 160 different handbooks and almost 30 multimedia programs. Its bi-monthly color journal Topical Time, edited by Wayne Youngblood, is an award-winning philatelic publication.

More than 56,000 individuals have joined ATA during its 61-year history. Former members whose membership has lapsed are also eligible to receive the free handbooks upon rejoining for two years or longer.

ATA domestic membership costs are $25 for one year, $45 for two, $65 for three, and $100 for five years. International memberships cost $33 for one year, $60 for two, $82 for three, and $125 for five years. International new members will pay just $5 postage for their two free handbooks, or actual cost for shipping the Railroad handbook. Payment may be made by check on US bank, PayPal, or Visa, MasterCard, or Discover cards.

A list of the ATA Handbooks available during this membership incentive will be provided free on request by e-mailing [email protected], calling 618-985-5100, or writing to PO Box 8, Carterville, IL 62918-0008. An application to ATA, including a list of available handbooks, is available at:

10 - Stamp News

This month, some recent noteworthy auction results are discussed, and other subjects relevant to this column. Some of the auction items are excellent examples of that oft used term: “Uncommon use of the common stamp”. Firstly, however, two updates for the December, 2010, column.

Back then, I offered five suggested “Don’ts” for 2011. The first was “Don’t remain transfixed by New Issues. Buy only those which will go up in value”. After submitting copy, I received the October 2010 issue of the Brighton Philatelic Society Bulletin, in which friend, and fellow BPS member, Brad Baker, was the featured “Interview” for the month. Brad was asked “Do you have any advice for new collectors wishing to develop their hobby?” He responded: “Try not to spend too much on modern material; it’s like buying a new car. Once you take it out of the Post Office it is worth less.” Brad, diplomatically, was careful to place a space between “worth” and “less”.

Coincidentally, 2011 is my 50th year of proud membership of the BPS. I’m quietly hoping this might be the year I get to do an “Interview”.

Figure 1. 2/6d Aborigine solo to Grenada

In December 2010, I mentioned that I had yet to see a commercial solo franking of the 1952 2/6d Aborigine, the original watermarked issue. On a headcount basis, I pointed out that a solo franking was actually rarer than the sideways/inverted watermark variety of the stamp, of which

four used examples had thus far been found. Two solo frankings of the watermarked issue have now been brought to my attention, for which I thank Andrew Brockett and “Wayne”. Both are for the 2/6d ½oz. Airmail rate to B.W.I., the former (Figure 1) to Grenada (1953: note nice “MISSENT TO BARBADOS” marking) and latter Jamaica (1956). Doubtless more will be found, but this will remain one of the more elusive solo frankings for an issue of the reign of King George VI.

Figure 2. 5/- “White” Cattleman attractive combination franking

Figure 2 is from the Prestige December 2010 auction (as are Figures 4 and 5), a 12 Nov 1964 cover from German Restitution Office, Sydney, to Dusseldorf, featuring attractive use of the 5/- Cattleman white paper printing, which is a very scarce stamp on cover, particularly a standard-sized envelope. 5/6d was for 2/3d ½oz. airmail + 2/- registration fee + 1/3d Express Delivery. $575 (auction prices exclude Buyer’s premium) was a respectable realization (estimate $250); I was underbidder. I particularly like usage items bearing this handsome, real Australiana design, and have been endeavoring for some years to assemble enough material for a one-frame exhibit of the stamp issue.

Figure 3. 35c Christmas ’72 in strip of four, no less

The 1972 Christmas 35c is an elusive stamp on cover, and Figure 3 is the record franking I’ve noted,

a Jan 1973 use of a strip of four paying quadruple airmail rate Melbourne to U.K. It realized $300 in Torsten Weller’s December 2010 auction. Not expensive.

Figure 4. 6c Bird solo

Figures 4 to 7 are examples of the scarce U.K. Forces in Australia concessional airmail rate. Figure 4 is a 14 Apr 1969 use of 6c Honeyeater for the airmail letter rate, Canberra to U.K., bearing Defence Forces Postage Concession handstamp. A nice example from the Prestige sale, estimated at $200, and a sound buy at $150. Only the fourth example seen of usage of this stamp for the privileged rate. Given the 1966 Decimal series has become quite popular as a usage subject, and the “Birds” have even more followers, I had expected the estimate to be exceeded. Incidentally, for any reader wanting to consider the ’66 series, one of my favourites, it was featured in three past columns: Nov 2007, and Apr and Sep 2008 (see www.rap.com.au under “Rod’s Columns”).

Figure 5. 6c Gemstones rare pair

The 6c Gemstones used for the U.K. Forces rate is almost as scarce as the 6c Bird. Interestingly, the former is the only 6c stamp I’ve noted used for the double rate (Figure 5); the Bird, QEII and Flower have thus far been seen only as single rate items. This 22 Nov 1976 use from Canberra, with “BRITISH DEFENCE FORCES MAIL” handstamp, was bought by me at Prestige for $115 (estimate $150), with which I was very pleased. Predictably, I rate it a gem. Only two multiples thus far recorded, and five solos.

Figure 6 was spotted on eBay last December, the 4c Stinger as a solo franking for the U.K. Forces airmail postcard rate, used 12 Jul 1978 at Naval

P.O. Balmoral to U.K., showing Navy Postage Concession Rate unframed handstamp. The Air Mail etiquette is neatly and conveniently tied by datestamp.

This was the first example of the 4c airmail postcard rate I’d seen, and knowing pioneer usage aficionado, Martin Walker, would be after this, I sniped in what I thought was a courageous US$510 bid, only to have Martin pip me at the post, $517.50 being the realization. This is a very special item, a stamp which in itself is a rarity as a solo franking, used for a legitimate and extremely rare postal rate. Postcard traders/collectors see little merit in modern postcards. In this instance such attitude would be akin to not seeing the forest for the trees. Knowledge is power, that evergreen term.

Figure 7. 4c QEII never looked so good

Martin kindly sent me a scan of the only other U.K. Forces 4c airmail postcard known to us, shown as Figure 7. Note Navy Postage Concession Rate handstamp, and Lt. Commander C.P. Addis, HMAS Penguin, personalized handstamp, written at Alice Springs 20 Jun 1975 (note also comment “. . . Darwin (remarkably recovered from the cyclone)”). Superb example of uncommon use of the common stamp, indeed one of Australia’s most common stamps.

Figure 8. £2 Arms “Specimen” block

Also in the Prestige December 2010 auction was the Arms “Specimen” set, in blocks of four, Figure 8 being the £2, stated to be the first multiple recorded [the 10/- and £1 in blocks are listed in ACSC]. The trio realized a staggering $22000 (excluding Buyer’s premium). This is only an opinion, doubtless one that the buyer (and underbidder) will dismiss, but I regard this realization as absolutely remarkable for what after all are contrived confections, made wholly and solely for collectors, with no postal validity, rarity factor no argument, however, of little if any philatelic significance; “Philatelic fairy floss”, they could fairly be labeled. On the other hand, in terms of philatelic significance, compare the “Arms” cover which follows.

Rod Perry has been a philatelic trader since 1962 and a Stamp News advertiser since the 1960s . He founded Rodney A Perry Auction Galleries (now Millennium Philatelic Auctions) in 1971. As a collector he has exhibited nationally and internationally. Rod prefers his used stamps on cover and likens taking a stamp off its original cover to converting a tree to woodchips. Past editions of this column may be accessed on Rod’s ‘rap.com.au’

Figure 9. £2 Arms cover more to my taste (bottom of previous column)

Yes, this is the third occasion on which I have featured Figure 9 during the past nearly nine years. I rate it one of the great postwar covers of Australia. In comparison with the postally impotent £2 Arms Specimen block, this £2 is a postal hero. Not only did it serve to pay an extremely high postal rate (with the 10/- it paid a multiple of 25 times the 2/- airmail rate), it is one of only two recorded usages of the £2 on an airmail cover, and it survived an aircraft crash which, tragically, 33 persons did not. The cover was salvaged from the BOAC Belfast, which crashed at Singapore on 13 March 1954. The £2 Kangaroo airmail covers, of which there are also only two, have sold recently for $21000 (Kevin Nelson, excluding Buyer’s premium), and $35000 (Private Treaty). I’m not valuing the £2 Arms covers in that league, although they are heading in the right direction. What I am saying is I, for one, have great difficulty reconciling the $22000+ paid for the Arms Specimen blocks.

Figure 10. 9d Macarthur nice used block, on cover!

Figure 10, 22 Feb 1935 Preston (Vic) to London, nice 9d Macarthur block for double airmail rate. For my money, a lot of cover for just $270, the realization at Craig Chappell’s December 2010 auction. A used block off cover is rare enough. I rate this item a contender for the pre-eminent usage item for this stamp. Frankly, I’m constantly puzzled why great items such as this can come and go largely unnoticed, when so many relatively common items are sought after. I made a similar comment on the solo franking of the 9d Macarthur in the Kevin Nelson sale, in last month’s column.

Surely the attributes of attractive usage items of Australia’s 1927-40 commems and special issues cannot be overlooked by collectors indefinitely? I certainly rate them one of the best value for money sectors in Australian Philately.

Market Matters:British Guiana 1¢ to be sold?

14 - Stamp News

One interesting piece of news that will impact on the stamp market is the death in custody of John E. duPont, in latter 2010.

Mr duPont was the owner of the “World’s Rarest Stamp” – the British Guiana 1856 1¢ Black on Magenta.

The stamp was purchased in 1980 at Robert. A. Siegel auctions in New York by John E. duPont, for $US935,000.

It was sold and last shown so long back, no really good quality images exist of it.

Only a scan from the sale catalogue of the time exists, hence the rather poor photo shown nearby.

It is the best image available, and even that took ages to source! The stamp is cut to shape, and is said to be scuffed and defective.

31 years back that was clearly a lot of money. Adjusted for inflation it is around $US3-4 million today.

I have little doubt that if marketed correctly, and intelligently, by a media savvy action house like Shreves/Spink, it will be invoiced out for around $US5-10 million.

Mr duPont, the eccentric multi-millionaire, connected to the US chemical fortune, was sentenced in 1997 to 40 years incarceration for murder.

Jailed for MurderHe was convicted of the 1996 slaying of Olympic wrestler David Schultz.

The murder occurred whilst duPont was

legally deemed to be mentally ill, thus sparing him a life sentence.

Mr duPont was aged 72 when he died in custody in a prison for the mentally ill in Philadelphia USA in December 2010.

www.tinyurl.com/J-duPont contains more interesting detail on the stamp, and parts of the rather bizarre life of John duPont!

The British Guiana 1¢ served as the centrepiece for duPont’s British Guiana exhibit that won the Grand

Prix International at “Ameripex 1986” in Chicago. It is a rather ugly stamp, and is also in defective

condition, but it has the recognition by most as “the rarest stamp existing”.

Which of course is quite untrue - many other unique stamp pieces also exist – and logically are all equally rare and unique.

And these sometimes sell for just a few $100s or $1000s each, if from unpopular countries or fields. I sold one from Victoria last month for $500!

Stamp World’s “Glamour Item”However the “British Guiana 1¢” has been the undoubted “glamour” item over the past century or so in the stamp world.

The exact present whereabouts of the 1¢ Magenta is unknown - but is believed to be in a bank vault in Philadelphia.

Ugly and damaged – worth millions!

Stamp News - 15

When this stamp next comes on the market is anyone’s guess, but it is realistic to assume “sooner rather than later” will be the answer, with this death.

I think this stamp has enough status and intrigue attached to it, to be keenly sought by several wealthy stamp enthusiasts and/or entrepreneurs.

Keen to own something famous and newsworthy they can be publicly associated with owning, and loaning to International Exhibitions etc.

American Bill Gross is the type of person for whom this sum is small change, and I suspect if it does sell for a record price, it will probably get far more, soon down the track.

Even a Corporation buying it would not surprise me, or even a savvy dealer like Stanley Gibbons, who would gain millions in publicity alone while they offered it at a profit.

Discovered in 1873The stamp was discovered in 1873 by a 12-year-old schoolboy, Vernon Vaughan, in the Guyanese town of Demerara, amongst his uncle’s letters.

There was no record of it in his stamp catalogue, so he sold it some weeks later for a few shillings to a local dealer, N. R. McKinnon.

After that, the price escalated. It was bought by a succession of collectors before being bought by Philippe

von Ferrary in the 1880s for US$750.

Ferrary was one of the wealthiest men in Europe, but mostly dressed like a hobo, never married, and did not drink, smoke or party, or have friends.

He was obsessed with stamps, and had a mansion full – including many of the world’s rarities! He never sold a stamp, and showed them to almost no-one.

Arthur Hind’s agent bought the Guiana during the series of fourteen Ferrary auction sales in 1922, for 352,500 Francs.

This was £7,343, a world record then, and he reportedly outbid Maurice Burrus, and 3

kings - including King George V. A second copy reportedly turned up in the 1920s,

and sold to American Hind. Rumour says Hind lit a match under it and said: “I still possess the only copy”.

Australian Frederick Small bought it off Hind’s widow in 1940, and sold it at Siegal Auction NYC in 1970.

I feel sure The Guiana will sell for a great deal more than the Sweden “Tre Skilling Banco” has been reported as getting in recent times.

That stamp seems to have been dogged

with rather bad press for decades.

Being offered and ‘sold’ several times by Feldman’s, but full payment never occurring and being defaulted upon repeatedly etc.

No buyer name, and no price!

The most recent May 2010 alleged “sale” was via a sworn to secrecy non-public “auction” by Feldman of Switzerland to an undisclosed buyer consortium (again!), and readers can form their own views upon that.

One of the rules of that special private “auction” was essentially that publication of the alleged sale price was at the discretion of the buyer, and all others involved were sworn to total secrecy.

Also the “auction” was essentially by invitation only, to pre-qualified bidders. Feldman named no price paid, but vaguely alluded it was around the SFR 2,875,000 paid in 1996.

No surprise to me - at the end of the “sale” it was stated the buyer was staying private, and was not confirming the sale price, and nor could anyone else it seems!

I believe I have written more on this stamp than anyone else has - in the English language at least.

In the past I spent days researching this stamp and its sales history, from the original discovery, to the web of alleged “buyers” in recent decades who never paid for it etc.

It you type Sweden “TreSkilling yellow” into google, my detailed article comes up as match number one.

I do not believe any Expertising Committee at any time has ever given this Sweden “Tre Skilling

Yellow” a Certificate as being a genuine error of colour.

I have never examined it, but my deep research into the stamp’s history makes me feel it is a genuine error - if I had to venture an opinion.

“Did not have the funds”David Feldman said in the superb book on the stamp, produced by the last owner consortium:

“It’s simple - I came up against three buyers in a row, all of them Swedes, who did not have the funds to redeem the stamps they’d purchased at our Auctions.”

Despite what most dealers and collectors think, neither of these 2 famous stamps are the world’s “most valuable” stamp items. Not by a LONG way. That distinction belongs to the November 1993 Feldman “Kanai” auction piece shown nearby. The 1847 envelope is franked with the 1d and 2d “Post Office” Mauritius stamps, and mailed to Bordeaux France - ordering 30 barrels of wine!

Priciest stamp item everIllustrated nearby, The “Bordeaux Letter” sold for 5,750,000 Swiss Francs to a Singapore collector in 1993.

Adjusted for 18 years of inflation, this is around 10 million Swiss Francs in today’s money.

How many readers were aware of this record price?

The “Bordeaux Letter” was purchased by European collector-dealer Guido Craveri, who also paid over $US2 million for a 1851 Hawaii cover in a Siegel Auction in New York in 1995.

And close behind in price to the Mauritius, is the GB 1840 1d Black on May 3 cover that sold by Harmers Lugarno Switzerland for at that time 3,400,000 Swiss francs in March 1991.

Both these sales FAR eclipse what either the Swedish or British Guiana stamps have so far obtained.

And that would surprise most in the stamp trade I

imagine - and certainly nearly all collectors.

GUYANA or bust!As sheer co-incidence has it, I am typing this column about the British Guiana 1¢ 1856, in the very country where it was printed!

I am in Lethem GUYANA, a dusty sleepy speck of a border town with Brazil, sipping a locally brewed Banks beer, in the searing savannah heat here.

Which is pretty funny as this is the NORTHERN hemisphere here, and TV news is showing white outs and deep snow in American and European cities and airports!

I’ve been lucky to have visited all the other 12 countries in South America ... most several times, but had NEVER made it to Guyana for some reason.

So this Boxing Day, after spending a Christmas Day on the Amazon fishing for Piranha fish, I snuck in via public bus over a remote border crossing.

From the wild west north-east tip of Brazil to

a passport stamp for country 13 in South America, from a Customs Officer whose name badge (I swear!) said “PUGSLEY”!

Many do not realise Brazil is a FAR larger country in area, than all of Australia or the Continental USA.

99% of tourists visit only Rio/Iguassu Falls/São Paulo in the south – all 4 or 5 hours flying to this remote Amazonas Boa Vista region.

Stamp collectors are far more Geography savvy than nearly any other collector group.

But I suspect many would have had no idea that Venezuela, Suriname, Guyana and French Guiana are all totally Northern Hemisphere countries.

All 4 border Brazil of course, which is partly in that Hemisphere, and all 5 countries speak 5 quite different major European languages.

That would be a great trivia night question, as many people assume Spanish is the only language spoken in South America!

Indeed Spanish is the primary language spoken by only 50% of residents on this continent.

To be only a few miles from Brazil, and surrounded by dark, dread-locked, ganja puffing locals, speaking only thickly accented Caribbean English is pretty neat.

Unique in South America, they all drive RH drive vehicles – all on the left hand side of the road, as in Australia and the UK and Japan etc.

Near everyone non stamp related who I told I was going to Guyana assumed it was in Africa – perhaps mixing it up with Ghana or Guinea?

Zero email/internet contact for a week here in Lethem Guyana, as a thunderstorm “hit something” and the entire sleepy town was knocked out.

Giving me a chance to type this. “Low Tech” does not ever begin to describe this part of the world!

This region is rife with Yellow Fever,

Made it to Guyana at last!

Malaria and Dengue Fever, and I got eaten alive by Mozzies. The “Tropical Strength” repellent rubbish they sold in oz, was like a taste treat for them.

The “Frontier News” has a photo of politicians promising to tar the main road “soon” - next to a barely clothed very bosomy local lady!

www.tinyurl.com/GlenMap shows the 116 countries I’ve visited – a fair while since I added a new one as I keep on covering familiar places!

Iceland uses stamps on orders!Well good to see at least someone reads these columns! I reported back in July 2010 on the clever new “Volcano Dust” impregnated stamps.

On 22 July, Iceland issued the three stamps shown nearby, showing the eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull Volcano, which as we know closed much of Europe’s air space for weeks.

All three stamps were silk screened printed by Enschedé, with very fine-grained ash taken from the volcano!

Enschedé printed the three stamps in sheets of ten. The stamps are inscribed (from left to right) ‘Local Letter 50g’ (75kr), ‘Letters to Europe 50g’ (165kr), ‘Letters to Other Countries’ (220kr)

Bureau Manager Vilhjálmur Sigurðsson took on board my comments then re using real stamps on client mail, and recently sent me this email –

“Dear Glen – we are now using real stamps on deliveries to customers. We would appreciate if you mention this in your columns.

This additional process of placing stamps onto envelopes, cancelling them by hand to standing

order customers, and all others as well, delays deliveries of orders a bit.

However we hope customers will be patient now when are doing this extra work – with the same staff numbers. Best regards, Vilhjálmur Sigurðsson, Iceland Post” - she concluded.

www.tinyurl.com/AshStamp contains a lively discussion of this trio on stampboards and confirms the VFU stamps now used, are often many times the shipping cost charged.

Iceland issues truly beautiful stamps, and in very conservative numbers, keeping the annual cost low.

Now that you get up to TREBLE in VFU face value than you pay shipping, I hope many readers sign up for New Issues.

It is a disgrace that EVERY Philatelic Bureau globally does not use real stamps on ALL standing orders.

How many still do? Please drop me a note if you can advise of any.

Are you game to soak these?

A Stamp Variation is a different version or format in which a stamp was issued (usually compared with the original single gummed sheet stamp). Variations are produced on purpose. They are not to be confused with “Varieties” which are unintentional mistakes, flaws or printing errors.

2010 SummaryIn 2010 Australia Post issued 593 variations costing about $5300 ! There were 29 new issues containing 108 designs and 316 new stamps. The face value of the new stamps was $255 but in many instances you had to pay more than face value, particularly for some of the reprints and gold-foiled stamps in the “Impressions” products. There were 241 new 55c or 60c ‘basic letter rate’ stamps issued which was, on average, about one every day and a half from Issue 1 in mid-January to the final “Impressions” product release on 20th December.

The number of variations in 2010 was about the same as 2009. The number of perforation variations was zero, which was the first time since 2004. There is certainly an opportunity for Australia Post to increase this number by perforating stamps from the one issue with different combs as they did in 2008. They have already doubled the image variations in some issues by having two different printers produce the self-adhesive variations. (This has frustrated collectors because the printer is not shown on the outside of the roll box and single mint stamps from each printer are not readily available.) There were 112 “collectable stamps” released in 2010. (“Collectable stamps” are cut out imperforate stamps that are not valid for postage.) Many of these were sold at prices well over face value. I have not classified the metal foil stamps as “collectables” as they could in theory be used for postage. The 2 Melbourne Cup mint foil variations were actually issued on envelopes! (A list of all decimal “Collectable Stamps” is on my website.)

Some unusual variations released in 2010 included the following:

The first issue for the year was the Australian •Novelists set. It had 140 variations which was the most number of variations of any issue last year. This was because it included a large prestige booklet containing many imperforate stamps and CMYK colour separation stamps with tabs. It also contained 18 black & white stamps.

The mint silver and gold foil Melbourne Cup •stamps were released attached to envelopes. They could be carefully soaked off to be placed in your album. The gold 60c stamp was the most expensive single stamp variation of the year with a price of $150.The huge Macquarie Bicentenary minisheet •released on 26th November was 270 x 100mm. It contained four 55c stamps. The 5 Melbourne Cup ‘Type 3 Reprints’ were •released in a prestige booklet with printed perforations. Each image contained the 2010 year code. If cut out from the minisheets they became ‘collectable stamps’ but the whole minisheet could be used for postage – except for the one containing the pair of 5d Archer pre-decimal stamps. The special sheetlet of 4 x 60c semi-imperforate •gold-foiled Cup stamps with large tabs on the left released in the 150th Melbourne Cup presentation folder. The Colonial Heritage – Empire $5 Queen •Victoria stamp was issued in 3 different formats. The stamp image was different in each variation. The intaglio printed imperforate minisheet stamp cost $15.

Full details of every new stamp issue, reprint release and the accompanying variations for 2010 are found on my website.

Late NewsFour new variations have been brought to my attention by readers. Thanks! Debra Collett found that the 60c self-adhesive Kingfisher roll stamp was printed by both McKellar Renown and Pemara. The Pemara variation has a slightly paler “Australia”.

Noela Dodd advised that the there were two 4-koala reprints of the Rainforest Butterflies 10c Blue-banded Eggfly stamp in September 2009. (The original was issued on 4th May 2004 with 14 x 14.4 perf.) The 4K printing by Energi Print has both 14 x 13.6 and 14 x 14.4 perfs and the total height of the koalas in the selvedge is 19mm. A third 4K variation

(which should have been a 1 Kangaroo) printed by McKellar Renown has 14 x 14.4 perf with a 22mm total height of the koalas. (I have classified the 14 x 13.6 one as a 2009 perforation variation and updated my website listing.) The eight (Kangaroo & Koala) Type 1 Reprints listed in the latest Stamp Bulletin are not all available yet so I haven’t been able to check them for variations. If I find any I shall add them to my website’s 2010 Stamp Issues list and update the above statistics.

Noel Almeida pointed out that the 50c Baggy Green stamp has been re-released for the third time since its original issue in March 2005. It was released on 25th November 2010 as a printed-postmarked stamp on a PNC envelope together with a recent 60c Wattles stamp. This ‘reprint’ does not contain a 2010 year code in the image and is identical to the original and 2008 reprint stamps. (I have not classified this as a variation.) Chris De Haer told me that the red 60c Southern Cross stamp in the “Americain” SSS released in November 2010 is a variation from the original issue of 19th July. It has light grey “60c Australia” text and a tab. Who said collecting variations wasn’t interesting?!

“Impressions” ContinuedAs mentioned last month, the “Impressions” variations products began being released in late November and December. The number of “Impressions” variations for 2010 was 54. They cost $1421 with a face value of $112. The difference

is $1309 “packaging”. I have removed all the stamps and variations and taken a photo of what I have put in the recycle bin. The packaging included a picture frame, numerous wooden and cardboard boxes, small paper ‘certificates’, cardboard folders, small plastic stamp boxes, wallets, badges, a pair of white gloves, coins and a $20 polymer note. (I have spent the ‘cash back’ coins and notes.) This was the last time I shall be throwing $1300 in the rubbish bin – see ‘The End’ below.

Details of the “Impressions” variations:

Melbourne Cup presentation folder • – This expensive limited edition folder was issued on 20th December. It was the highest loss item at $377. It contained 14 variations (see separate list) and a pair of white gloves! The 20 pages are screwed together for convenience of removal of the 2 sheetlets, 3 minisheets and 7 stamps. Five of the single stamps were the same design as the reprints previously released in the prestige booklet on 1st November but did not have the

2010 year code and printed perforations, hence were identical with the original stamps. The special sheetlet of 4 x 60c semi-imperforate gold-foiled Cup stamps with large tabs on the left is the most unusual item in the folder.Melbourne Cup FDCs • – As I suspected the silver and gold stamps are ‘mint no gum’. They have been stuck on the envelopes over the top of the silver and gold printed postmarks. The stamps are 2mm wider than the original paper versions and have a 12.9 x 12.7 perforation.

Melbourne Cup imperforate half sheet• – This contained 9 large 165 x 90mm minisheets which is 5mm wider and taller than the original perforated minisheet. The minisheet and the stamps are ‘Collectables’ and as such are not valid for postage.

Commonwealth Coinage imperforate half •sheet – This contained 10 large embossed 109 x 73mm minisheets which is 3mm wider and taller than the original perforated minisheet. Likewise the minisheets and stamps are Collectables.

Commonwealth Coinage wallet• – The imperforate minisheet was overprinted with the 1910 Coat of Arms in gold. When you cut

in the top left corner is a different font. The page number is also missing. The 4 Australians Under Fire stamps were originally issued on 19th February 1992. These were the centre pair from the original strip of 4 sheet stamps issued on 20th April 2010.National Service stamplet• – The digital printed stamp is quite different from the original. It is paler and the text is not as distinct. The single stamp has a tab on the top and a small selvedge. It is 55 x 55mm. Now we know what a “stamplet” is!National Service sheetlet • – Each stamp in this sheetlet of 10 x 60c stamps contained a gold foil logo in the top right corner and a gold serial number in the bottom selvedge.Aeronautical Licence wallet •– This contained a single pearl-embellished minisheet with a pair of high gloss $1.45 John Duigan stamps from the 9th March 2010 ‘Centenary of Powered Flight’ issue.Great Australian Railway •Journeys gold foil stamps – The 4 gold foil stamps are

the same size as the paper originals and are thin enough to put in your album. The perforation of the 55c stamps is 10.2 x 10 and the $2.10 stamp is 9.5 x 9.5. I wonder if they are valid for postage?

Emergency Services gutter strip• – Surprise! Surprise! They were 60c stamps, not 55c ones as illustrated in the catalogue. The pseudo ‘gutter strip’ contained 5 high gloss embellished stamps (the first, third and fifth stamps along the top and the second and fourth along the bottom) and 5 embellished logos in the gutter. The serial number of the accompanying uncirculated 2008 $20 polymer note was printed on the right selvedge.

Macquarie Bicentenary minisheet• – This $2.20 minisheet is considerably larger

than the one issued in the prestige booklet on 16th February 2010. It measures 270 x 100mm. It is probably the largest minisheet ever issued!

The EndThis is my final ASV article for Stamp News. I began collecting stamps 54 years ago but have now decided to stop. I can no longer afford to spend over $5000 a year to buy all Australia Post’s variations so I can write this article. Throwing over $1300 worth of “Impressions” packaging into the recycle bin every November was the “straw that broke the camel’s back”! I stopped collecting in December 2000. My first Australian Stamp Variations article was published in Stamp

News in June 2006. I have not received any payment for the 57 articles since then but I feel I have at least put something back into our hobby. Thanks Kevin and Mairin. I trust you have enjoyed reading them each month and I thank you for the feedback you have given me by post, email and on www.stampboards.com. My 1966 – 2010 ASV Catalogue will be my last. I shall now be selling all my surplus material accumulated since I was 10 years old. Keep an eye on my website and eBay. Stamp Collecting is one of the best educational hobbies there is. I am sure you will continue to get enjoyment from it.

auction news

British Empire flies the flag in October

28 - Stamp News

Three auctions held at the recently refurbished Grosvenor salerooms during October provided further compelling evidence of the growing strength of the British Empire market, the total realization of£1,469,494 leaving the pre-sale estimate of£1,106,550 far behind.

India is currently enjoying excellent support and the auction of the John Trowbridge Collection ofIndian Native States held on October 6th attracted wide international interest. One of the most remarkable prices was the £5,039 paid for the attractive 1907 Cochin revenue essay featured on the inside back cover of the catalogue (lot 332 illustrated below). Amongst other Cochin stamp rarities were the scarce Cochin 1943 provisional 1a.3p. on 1a. type 21 (S.G. 92c, lot 149) which reached £4,329 and the 1944 Official 1a. (S.G. 070, lot 153) which achieved £3,861 against a Stanley Gibbons catalogue value of £3,250. Lot 250 offered two examples of the original design essay for the Travancore

Conch issues, one of which was chosen to appear on the front cover of the catalogue. This popular lot achieved a very impressive £1,813.

Starting on the afternoon of the same day and continuing on Thursday 7th was the auction of British Empire & Foreign Countries containing items and collections from across the world, including special sections presenting exceptional collections formed by advanced collectors.

The first of these was the James E Brill collection of Pitcairn Islands which brought to the market more rarities from this area than one might normally expect to see in many years. One of the rarest King George VI booklets is the Pitcairn 1940 4s.8d. and the four examples that the collection here presented (lots 690-693) all found new homes, realising between £1,125 and £1,937.

The John Davis Collection of War Tax issues of the British West Indies provided an in-depth overview and fitting accompaniment to John

Davis's recently published guide to these interesting issues "The War Tax Stamps of the British Empire, First World War, The West Indies". Among many notable results were the £1,920 paid for both the Saint Kitts-Nevis 1/2d. green (lot 824) and 11/2d. orange (lot 825) in plate proof strips of three with plate number, whilst a used example of the Jamaica 11/2d. watermark sideways (S.G. 711aa) approached its catalogue value of£1,700 with a realization of £1,638.

The second day of this auction began with an outstanding offering of Miscellaneous and Mixed Lots with the first lot, an exceptional collection of Foreign Countries in two New Ideal albums (lot 915) rising to £56,160 and the second, a British Empire collection in two New Imperial albums (lot 916) reaching £45,630.

Strong prices continued throughout the remainder of the sale with £24,570 being paid for that popular rarity, the Jamaica 1919-21 Is. frame inverted (lot 1476) and £24,570 for the Rhodesia & Nyasaland 1959-62 3d. Rhodes Grave pair with centre omitted (lot 1670). A most exceptional collection of British Guiana including four 'Cottonreels" and other classics attracted great interest. The 1850-51 4c. lemonyellow (S.G. 2, lot 1181 sold for £5,999 and the 1856 Type-set 4c. black on magenta (S.G. 24, lot 1195) rose to £8,424.

Auctioneer James Grist later paid tribute to a very successful pair of auctions which had provided great interest for collectors in a particularly wide range of fields.

October 21st, Trafalgar Day, was a highly appropriate day for the sale of the 'Victory' Collection of Malta with a full room and prices high for what was the most important collection of this country to come to auction for some years.

The postal history section of the sale contained a number of items that also held considerable historical interest. Lot 3021, an 1803 letter from Lord Nelson to Major General Villettes, Governor of Malta, consequently did not disappoint, achieving £21,645 against a pre-sale estimate of £3,000-4,000. Among many attractive later covers was an 1855 incoming entire letter from Dacca, India that soared to £14,397.

Collectors were also determined not to miss this rare opportunity to acquire the many scarce essays, proofs and other items on offer among the

issued stamps and fierce competition repeatedly drove prices past pre-sale estimates. The 1860 1/2d. buff imperf. plate proof, one of only three known examples rose to £10,558, the handpainted essay for the 1886 5s. (lot 3253 illustrated below) achieved £10,764, whilst the imperforate plate proof block of four of the 1919 lOs. (lot 3344) impressed at £26,910. High prices are now perhaps to be expected for King George VI varieties and lot 3402, the used example of the 1948-53 'SELF-GOVERNMENT' 1/2d. albino overprint, was no exception, achieving £17,996 against a catalogue value of £13,000.

Auctioneer Andrew Claridge professed himself pleasantly surprised by the intensity of the bidding and the breadth of support for this sale, resulting in 54 separate successful buyers, an exceptionally high number for a single country sale.

A Unique Event Brings a Most Successful Outcome

Mandurah Philatelic Society (Inc.) and Peel Region Numismatic Group hosted the Mandurah 2010 Stamp, Coin, Banknote and Postcard Fair on Friday 19 to Sunday 21 November 2010. By all accounts, the last of the 3 national events this year was judged to be a great success.

To the best of our knowledge, the Mandurah 2010 Fair featured a first of its kind for Australia – it brought together four major collecting fields for a trans-Tasman competitive exhibition. The magnitude of this combined event was something new to the coin and banknote collectors, who showed great enthusiasm in their efforts to ensure the overall success of the exhibition.

The Mandurah 2010 Fair was timed to coincide with the Centenary of Australian Coinage and Australia’s First Powered Flight. As a prelude to the Fair, the historic bi-plane Silver Centenary flew souvenir airmails in a re-enactment flight, landing at Murrayfield Airfield, where the mail was handed over to the Mayor of Mandurah, Paddi Creevey.

Mandurah is a coastal tourist town, located about 70km south of Perth in Western Australia. The venue that housed this event was the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre, picturesquely located on the Mandurah Boardwalk, skirting the banks of the Mandurah River. The Arts Centre is within easy walking distance of accommodation, restaurants and local attractions. With the Perth rail link now in full swing

and plenty of car parking space available, it was a well-situated function for both city and country folk to attend. During the event, dolphins were seen each morning from the venue’s full-length windows overlooking the waterway.

Councillor Peter Schumacher opened the Mandurah 2010 Fair at 10.00am on behalf of the Mayor of Mandurah.

The exhibition showcased entries in four competition divisions:

Division 1: National One Frame Australasian Numismatic ChallengeDivision 2: National One Frame Philatelic Competition Division 3: National One Frame Postcard Competition Division 4: National Australasian Philatelic Challenge. The competitions provide an opportunity for

collectors to display some of their treasured items at a national level and compete for the prizes on offer. 309 frames of high quality material were on display, with the material varying from The 1d Red George V issue of Australia 1914-20 to Cuba Transatlantic Postal History, from Postcards of Gawler and the Great War to Cornelius Petersen’s Banknotes with entries from both North & South Island of New Zealand and most Australian States.

Entrants in Divisions 1, 2 and 3 each created a sixteen-page display on a topic of their choice.

Each display was mounted for public exhibition in an upright display panel known as a ‘frame’. Division 1 coin displays were exhibited in glass-topped cases provided by the Australian Numismatic Dealers Association. Adult entries in Division 4 were comprised of five frames (as 5 x 16 pages), and Youth entries between two and five frames (depending on the age of the exhibitor).

The Mandurah Performing Arts Centre, picturesquely situated on the bank of the Mandurah River, a most pleasant outlook for both visitors and volunteer workers.

A three-member jury for each class evaluated and judged each exhibit and awarded a score out of 100. All exhibitors who scored 55 points or more received a medal. Any Challenge will always bring out the better material to enhance each team’s chances of success.

The quality of the displays was admirably attested to by the number of high level medals awarded. In the philatelic Australasian Challenge 40 out of the 48 entrants received a vermeil (75 points) or higher. The National Philatelic One Frame Competition saw 28 of the 61 exhibitors with a vermeil or higher medal. The National Postcard Competition produced 9 entries out of 15, and the National One Frame Numismatic Competition fared equally as well with 8 out the 13 exhibitors achieving vermeil or higher. Whilst it is generally accepted that the standard of Challenge entries will be high, it was pleasing to see the quality of the non-challenge exhibits.

There were three juries in operation, a team of 14 to judge the philatelic classes, a team of 4 to judge the picture postcards, two teams of 3 to judge the numismatic displays. All juries noted the high quality of the exhibits and welcomed the confirmed interest in both one frame exhibits and the Australasian Challenges.

The two Challenges are team events, with a team of six people per Challenge for each of the nine zones:

Western Australia, South Australia and Northern Territory, Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory, Queensland, New Zealand North Island & New Zealand South Island It was unfortunate that Queensland

was unable to field a team in the Australasian Philatelic Challenge.

Each Challenge team comprised of five adults and one youth. Points

awarded for the individual team member’s entries were added together for a team total. The team with the highest number of points was declared the winner of the Challenge for their Division.

The New South Wales team, with 508 points out of a possible 600, were the winners of the 5th Australasian Philatelic Challenge: with team members being Arthur Gray, Geoffrey Lewis, Maurice Williams, David Collyer, Gloria Bradley (novice member) and Blake Griffin (Youth Member). Tasmania, with 504 points was a close second. The captain of the NSW team, Linda Lee, was presented with the perpetual trophy, the Ed Druce Memorial Award, and each team member received an individual prize to commemorate their efforts.

Western Australia was the inaugural winner of the Australasian Numismatic Challenge. The team members were: Robin Hughes-d’Aeth, Steve Milner, Heather Arthurson, Ken Green, Hans van Zwol and Christopher Stone. Steve Milner, captain of the WA team, was presented with the inaugural Australasian Numismatic Challenge trophy, donated by the Peel Region Numismatic Group Award, on behalf of his team and again, each team member received an individual prize.

In addition to the team winners, the major individual prize winners were:

from Kalgoorlie, the show website www.mandurah2010.com provided a single point of contact for almost anything and everything to do with the Fair. Over 6,500 hits were received before the event was opened.

Souvenir items were sold before and during the Fair. These included three overprinted PNC’s, and overprinted booklets and Minisheets. For the postmark collectors a different postmark was available on each day.

There were seventeen APTA & ANDA dealers present from around Australia, and all seemed happy with their trading. Admission to the Fair was free, and this undoubtedly influenced many of the 2,000 plus visitors over the three days.

Also featured was an activities area for youth; informative talks; national show souvenirs; daily show postmarks and daily door prizes across the three days. The Postal Stationery Society of Australia hosted a meeting during this Fair.

There were two major evening events, adding tremendously to the great atmosphere: Friday night’s Co-Chair cocktail evening was held at the Stage Door restaurant overlooking the river. This event was the organisers’ way of thanking all of the dealers, judges and committee members. The evening was highlighted not only by the great company but the beautiful sunset colours of Mandurah and the

dolphins once again coming in to greet us all.On Saturday night the formal Palmares awards

dinner was held in the Conference Centre adjoining the Atrium Hotel. Glen Stafford was the compere for the evening, which was attended by 110 people, including the Mayor of Mandurah, Paddi Creevey. Her speech captured the feelings of the audience in her promotion of Mandurah as an idyllic place to hold such a prestigious national event. Awards and medals were presented, many photos were taken and one or two drinks were consumed, as is normal in such events.

The success of any major show in Australia is highly dependant upon the number and willingness of the volunteers who tirelessly give of their time in performing all types of duties. The volunteers were everywhere and highly noticeable in their monogrammed red shirts, making it easy to find someone in times of need. The overall success of this exhibition is a lasting tribute to the significant contribution made by our volunteer workers.

This exhibition had another first – the introduction of the bright yellow Australian Philatelic Federation safety vests. These vests clearly identify all volunteers during the set-up and close-down stages, so important to maintain security over the material being handled during these operations.

It had been previously reported that the plaques honouring those donors who had supported the Frames Restoration Fund would be in place for this exhibition. A technical problem with the production prevented this from happening. However, all of the donors were acknowledged by a suitable display in one of the exhibition frames.

In Adelaide Stampex 2010 the Australian Philatelic Federation had experimented by including non-technical descriptions of each of the various exhibition classes, together with contacts for further information. The presentation of this information was improved at Mandurah, where it occupied two adjoining frames. It is intended that this type of information will be on display at all future national exhibitions.

The Mayor of Mandurah, Paddi Creevey (right), attended the Palmares Awards Dinner, and is shown here with Johanna Stafford, Co-chair of the Orgaising Committee.

For those readers who have not seen these Desert Magic books, they are a large A4 sized book (stockbook sized) with thick white Spiro edge binding that as you can see allows them to lay flat. (There is a half sized one which is basically useless in our view.)

The pages are of REALLY thick blotting type paper. i.e.thick heavy cardboard thickness. It is some special “fast release” formulation .. no idea what they use, but it really does WORK!

There is then a special smooth plastic coating on one side. So you wash your stamps, and if you leave them to air dry on tea towels or blotting paper or newspaper, light creases and bends will always stay there.

If they are placed into this book when touch damp (not sopping wet) and left there with the gum side to the plastic side and the front of stamp to the blotter side, they dry perfectly

flat, and many light bends and creases vanish. Nearly all of them. It is amazing the difference they make, which is why we sell so many!

Readers of www.stampboards.com have acclaimed these as one of the best stamp accessories on the market. Just put your stamps in, pile a few heavy books on top and forget them for a week. Most collectors have two books, as that is the secret ..... do NOT touch them for a week and let them dry slowly under weight. Most important.

The special formulation plastic coated side is super important as otherwise many stamps STICK to blotter if damp and between 2 sheets of blotting paper, with heavy weight on top. These do not. Again it is some special coating they have figured out which works perfectly for this specific job.

Almost any other kind of plastic sheet you may try to experiment with at home will leave a real ugly mirror like “SHEEN” on the gum side if placed in damp, under weight, which looks really stupid, and really shows what you have been doing. These do NOT.

The books last for decades. They really do. A 10/- C of A Roo used and light creased copy will be $100 retail, and one that is nice and flat $200. So the cost of the book is paid 3 fold with just one stamp that is saved.

New South Wales RailwaysI would like to place on record a very nice 1929 issue 3/- error of colour [fig 1] which has surfaced from a NSW junk lot of goodies. It is on NSW R wmk. As we know the 3/- was issued bi-coloured. I hear you say, ‘well it must be washed in a bit of chlorine which has turned it blue’ but not so. It may pay you to recheck your holdings of this issue as you may have a grubby 3/- mono colour sitting in with the 3d values. If you do find one please let me know so we can record it. This error of colour has now been added to my free on line catalogue. Thinking further on this, it may well be an actual issued stamp in blue which has not been listed by earlier students, but until more turn up it is probably best to list it as an error of colour. You may have some thoughts on this, if so please share them here.

Queensland RailwaysAfter writing about the NSW error of colour above, I now have to follow it with a horrible torn, rusty & part

missing Queensland 1919 Railway issue [fig2]. ‘Fit for the bin’ I hear you say – not so, if you look further it’s station name is Mount Samson with a fine numeral strike of 1321. This I would like to place on record as Mount Samson has been unallocated since 1919. It has taken some 90 odd years for John Amiet [well known Queensland philatelic researcher] to find one. We are lucky John was the finder of this as most ordinary collectors of postage stamps would have assigned it to the bin without giving it another thought.

Another Commonwealth Beer DutyAnother Commonwealth beer duty has surfaced on eBay selling for about $80. Figure 3 shows the 41/3d on 24/9d. My online catalogue does list this and even shows a copy, but these are hard to find and when they do show up are quickly snapped up.

revenues [fig 4] from Tasmania has made it’s way across the world from the UK to a Queensland collector [cough]. This is only the second imperf between pair between that I have recorded. The other pair is shown in my on line catalogue.

Further BeersPhilatelics Australia’s last auction had a fine selection of New South Wales beer duties up for grabs, including a very rare used 1/3d pair, paying the 10 gallon rate. This is only the third value I have recorded from this series in used condition. The pair is dated 21 Dec 1914 from the West End Brewery at Broken Hill. Also included was figure 5, a fine example from the second series. This auction further included a second recorded ‘set’ of ‘Our Boys League’ revenues. I wrote about these last year and also have a web page dedicated to this issue.

Revenue & Railway Perfin BookI have had a few emails asking when the Revenue and

Railway precanceled perfin book for Queensland will be released to the collecting public. The short answer is hopefully mid year. This task both David Coath and I have undertaken is taking longer than we both thought, due to the fact of cross referencing some incorrect work from previous publications. Some of which is totally wrong and needs addressing.

As an example, previous now outdated works list the Lowood Creamery Company which perfined its railway stamps with a large L as having its address at Lowood. My guess is previous works editors just guessed! Not a good situation to be in as we now find ourselves having to cross reference all company addresses. A shame previous research was poorly done, but the good news is we intend to do our best to correct this.

The Lowood Creamery perfin identity as to where it originated from, to a railway collector is glaringly obvious. The company had offices in Adelaide Street, Brisbane and used its railway stamps from Brisbane Central station. Further, just to complete the story we

have decided to include pre printed or handstamped precancels that are known. Some of which preceded the precanceling of perfins, others followed on. Something that has been addressed in this series of on line books is that perfins and precancels go hand in hand, and belong in the same book. Collectors need to remember that perfins are precancels as well.

Near by, is a sample page [figs 6] of how it will look once it goes ‘live’ on the net via a user name & password. If you would like further information on costs to access this work or maybe pre order this work, so you will be one of the first to have this ‘up to date’ information at your fingertips, please make contact with David Coath on [email protected]

This work will be available on your computer, mobile phone or iPad. We have made this usable in all media forms for ease of use. Whether you are viewing

perfins in an auction room, or sitting at a dealer table at a stamp show, or maybe in a dealers shop anywhere in the world, this information is right there fully up to date. However included in this package will not be a set of steak knives but a reference set of patterns in hard copy form. It sure beats lugging around those big old books, then having to search for the revenue components in them. WHAT! you do not have computer access? Fear not, we will be happy to print off the internet pages and post them to you. Again David Coath will be able to answer all your questions in this area, if you write to my below address I will forward to David.

Stamp Catalogues Part 2

We’ll start off this month by looking at catalogue listing arrangements. This might seem like a strange topic if, for example, you only collect Australia, and have always used, lets say, the Seven Seas Australian Stamp Catalogue. The listings in the ASC are fairly straightforward: first of all we have the Kangaroo issues, then the King George V (KGV) issues, followed by the Official punctures and overprints, then all of the subsequent issues, mostly in chronological (issue date) order, followed by reprints, first day covers, booklets etc. If this is the catalogue that you’ve always used, you may be surprised to find that not all catalogues arrange their listings in this way. The Stanley Gibbons Australia catalogue, for example, lists all issues chronologically. This means that the various watermark and perforation varieties of the Kangaroo and KGV issues are interspersed in the listings, together with the early commemorative, other definitive and airmail stamps.

The most profound difference in listing arrangements for Australian stamps is found in the 8 volumes of the Brusden White Australian Commonwealth Specialists Catalogue. Here the stamps are grouped and listed by denomination, rather than in sets of values by watermark or perforation type. Let me explain. First of all, the various denominations are grouped together, so in the KGV volume for example the 4d orange listing is immediately followed by the 4d violet, then 4d blue, and finally the 4d olive listings. Then within each denomination/colour, the various issues are grouped together. So we find that the four different watermark versions of the 1/- green Kangaroo, issued between 1913 and 1932, together with the different dies relevant to this value, are listed together, with the first watermark 1/- being BW # 30, the second watermark 1/- is BW # 31, third watermark 1/- die II is BW #32, with the die IIB version of the 1/- in that watermark being BW # 33 and so on.

Likewise, in the KGV volume, the 4d olive, which appeared in three different watermarks and two perforation varieties between 1924 and 1938, are BW #’s 114 to 117.

This may seem rather confusing to those

unfamiliar with this catalogue, but with only a little practice you will find that it is a very easy catalogue to use, and that this is really the most logical layout for a specialised catalogue of Australian stamps, where plate varieties and their attendant re-entries and retouches, can persist throughout the entire ‘life’ of a particular stamp.

Beyond AustraliaBut listing arrangement variations don’t stop there. As we travel further a field in the world of stamp catalogues, we will find other variations. Perhaps the best known and most often encountered of these is the system used by the Scott catalogues. In these widely used catalogues, all the different types of stamps are listed separately, and each, apart from regular postage issues, has it’s own prefix letter. Airmail issues have the letter ‘C’ before the number, ‘Semi Postals’ (Charity and other fund raising issues) the letter ‘B’, Postage Dues the letter ‘J’, Special deliveries the letter ‘E’ and so on.

Most of the main Irish catalogues, including the specialised Hibernian catalogue, groups all of the definitive issues together at the front of the catalogue, followed by separate sections for the commemorative, airmail and postage due issues.

The numbers gameYou would think that, taking into account the variations in listings mentioned above, catalogue numbering would be fairly straight forward. In most cases it is, particularly if, as I suggested last month, you’ve taken the time to read the introduction and ‘how to use this catalogue’ sections. Despite this, there are still a couple of traps that the unwary collector can fall into.

The first thing to bear in mind is that in most cases the catalogue numbering system consists of two distinct numbers, the number relating to the stamp illustration (which is usually found directly under the illustration), and the number of the specific stamp listing. When dealers or collectors refer to the catalogue number of a particular stamp, they are referring to the latter. Usually the illustration number will be repeated in the listings, next to the catalogue number, to enable you to

Stamp Catalogues Part 2 Mike Lee

accurately identify the stamp. In some catalogues, only one value of a set will be illustrated, usually (but not always) the lowest value. This presents no problem if all of the stamps in the set share a common design, but can certainly make life harder if they don’t! In these cases the catalogue usually has ‘and similar designs’ or something similar, next to the illustration number in the listings, or it may list a short description of each design to aid in identification.

The second problem that I’ve encountered is that some collectors are amazed that the catalogue number for a particular stamp isn’t the same in all of the different publishers’ catalogues. Now, maybe I’ve just been around philately in general too long (and it has been quite a while), or my brain simply works on a different wavelength, but to me, that’s pretty much the same as asking ‘why can’t I fix my Ford with this Holden part?’ First of all, these catalogue publishers are competing with one another for our hard earned dollars, and by adding extra details etc to their listings, which may well result in extra or changed catalogue numbers, they are making their product more comprehensive, and therefore more attractive to the potential buyer. Next, as we saw in the earlier part of this article, different publishers put their catalogues together in different ways, some integrating all types of stamp issues into the one listing, and some having separate sections for each type of stamp issue. Many dealers’ price lists will show catalogue numbers from different catalogues, in Australia it’s usually the numbers from the ASC and Stanley Gibbons. One Irish price list that I had a few years back, listed four different catalogue numbers for each stamp! Once again, it’s just a matter of getting used to these sorts of things. One situation where this diversity of numbers can be a particular headache is when the time comes to update/replace your existing catalogue, or perhaps you’ve used a simplified catalogue up until now and you wish to move on to a more specialised one, and your wants list has the catalogue numbers of your old catalogue indicating the stamps you need….well, as you can imagine the change over might be a bit of a job!

If all of these different catalogues and numbers seem a bit mystifying to you, spare a thought for the poor dealer, who often has to guess which catalogue the numbers on your wants list are from (please, please include something to let them know!), and if I had a dollar for every tine I’ve had a conversation with a customer that went something along these lines: Customer: Hi, I’m just after three Australian stamps, they’re numbers 321, 465 & 1182. Me: OK, now which catalogue do those numbers come from? Customer: Which catalogue? My Australian catalogue! Me: OK, but which Australian catalogue? Customer: Oh, the latest one. I just got it for Christmas!

I’m sure you can all see the problem! Finally, and probably most importantly, copyright is also an issue. Let me quote from the Copyright Notice found at the front of the 2010 Stanley Gibbons Australia catalogue: ‘The contents of this catalogue, including the numbering system and illustrations, are fully protected by copyright’. Now, while I’m not sure of all of the implications of this statement, but I know that if I were thinking about publishing a new Aussie catalogue, I’d be investigating very carefully anything to do with the numbering system I was planning to use to make sure it wasn’t going to be infringing anybody else’s copyright.

How much?!?When it comes to catalogues, I’m sure that more has been written over the years about pricing than all other topics combined!

Before I go any further, go and get your favourite catalogue(s) and read the section at the front headed ‘Prices’,’ pricing’ or something similar. Make sure you fully understand what it’s saying, and how condition in particular can affect the value of stamps.

The whole issue of catalogue prices can be quite a minefield, and as I’ve already mentioned, much has been written on the topic. With this in mind, there are only a couple of issues that I wish to bring before you.

First of all, the hard, cold fact is that you will never get full catalogue price for your stamps

sn feb 2011.indd 41 12/1/11 2:54:45 PM

Page 42: Stamp News February 2011

Stamp Catalogues Part 2

when you come to sell them. Actually, this is fairly obvious when you stop and think about it. Let me give you an example. The prices that you’ll find in Stanley Gibbons catalogues are their selling prices. Obviously, no one is going to stay in business for very long if they buy and sell the same item at the same price. Hardly rocket science! Most dealers, and many collectors for that matter, will have a certain percentage of the catalogue value that they will buy and sell stamps for. This will vary from dealer to dealer and collector to collector, and obviously this will affect the real world value of your collection. Other factors also come into play such as supply and demand, which, in the stamp world, can take a variety of forms. One of the most common forms, in my opinion, is the popularity of the country of origin of the stamp or collection in question. If someone were to offer me a stamp, say, from Bolivia with an SG catalogue value of £500, and another stamp was offered to me from the Falkland Islands with the same catalogue value, I wouldn’t even consider the Bolivian stamp, even if the price tag were only $20! I would, however, be happy to offer the seller of the Falklands stamp a reasonably high percentage of catalogue value, and probably be asking if he or she had any more at home! Why? Because I could probably sell the Falklands stamp three or four times over within a few days – it’s one of the best selling British Commonwealth countries, and I have several customers who I’m sure would be interested. I have only one customer who may be interested in the Bolivian stamp, but I can imagine he would already have it, and would have paid less than the $20 I wouldn’t have considered! The fact is that in ten years of full time stamp trading, apart from the lone customer mentioned above, I have never been asked for stamps from any South American country by any collector. Supply/demand/popularity. But it’s not that simple. Offer the Bolivian stamp in another part of the world, such as the USA or South America, and the situation may well be reversed, or at least levelled out quite a bit. Now throw into this mix eBay and other internet auctions, world class philatelic public auctions located right here in Australia offering better

quality stamps on a world stage, and another dealer who has a very enthusiastic collector of Bolivia, and who knows what will happen! Whether you are buying or selling, do your home work. Look around, ask around, obtain dealer’s price lists or auction catalogues with prices realised, see what stamps similar to yours (or if you are buying, the ones you need) are selling for, and then, with this information cluttering up your brain, or better still cluttering up a spreadsheet or database, map your findings onto the prices in your favourite catalogue. This may not solve all your problems with pricing, but it might be a helpful starting point.

And finally, before we finish our brief exploration into the world of catalogues, I think one more pricing issue needs to be mentioned. As we have seen, different publishers use different listing layouts and different numbering systems. The same is true when it comes to pricing. A number of years ago, in an effort to more accurately reflect the real market price of a stamp, some publishers, most notably Scott in the USA, switched to ‘retail’ prices, a price reflecting the average selling price, as determined from a number of larger dealers price lists. As you can imagine, this threw the stamp world on it’s ear, and for a while there was much grinding of teeth and wringing of hands! After a while the dust settled, and most people came to realise that this system, while not perfect, actually made quite a bit of sense! In the years since, most catalogues, including those published in Australia, have gone on to adopt this pricing structure. It’s not perfect, and can still cause a bit of confusion, but it does seem to be the most logical criteria for catalogue publishers to use in most cases.

I do hope that these two articles have been informative. If you have any questions or thoughts on the subject of catalogues, please shoot me an email and I’ll do my best to answer!

All the best until next month,

Mike

Cinderellas AustralasiaThe latest edition of Cinderellas Australasia (Vol 24 Number 3) has a major article on the Patent Office Stamps of Australia 1954 – 1988. This article has appeared in two parts, the first dealing with the stamps was produced in the February 2009 issue, and this latest part deals with the cancellations used on the stamps.Membership of the Cinderella Club of Australasia is $20 and enquiries should be made to The Secretary at P.O. Box 889 Chatswood New South Wales 2057.

Our Boys LeagueA set of these stamps was offered as three lots in the latest Philatelics (Australia) auction in Adelaide. All sold at above estimate to the same buyer. This is only the second set of these elusive stamps that I have recorded. I wrote at length about these stamps in both the April and October 2009 Cinderella Corner columns and also in the Cinderella Philatelist of October 2009.

Charity SealsThese two items are from New South Wales, (figs. 1 and 2), going by the offset postmark on one of them and the location of the house on the other. They have the combined symbol of Community Health and Anti Tuberculosis Association on them and the offset postmark is dated 1977, however I don’t know when the Experiment Farm Cottage one was issued.

Wilson ParkingI picked this item, (fig. 3), up at the Mandurah exhibition in Western Australia. It, along with two others, was attached to the back of a parking station ticket. I have not seen them before and although Wilson Parking also operate in Adelaide, I have never seem them used here. Any further information about their use from readers will be appreciated.

VietnamThis is another one I have not seen before, (fig. 4), it certainly did not make it to Vietnam on any

serviceman’s mail. There were a couple of reverse ones that come to mind from 1967 when certain unions decided to boycott services to the military in South Vietnam. Veterans from that time will remember them and I won’t go into them in detail suffice to say that very soon after word about the opinions of those serving in that theatre arrived in Australia, all services to the military resumed.

Red CrossI have illustrated this one, (fig. 5), before but had little information about it. I still don’t have much. This is one of three on the back of a cover from Peterborough in South Australia. It has the date 1943 in the inscription and the cover is postmarked October 1943. I guess they were issued as a fund raiser for the Red Cross.

Racing Hall Of FameAnother of those mystery stamps that come to light every now and then. (Fig. 6). I have not heard of

the Australian Racing Hall of Fame Local Post. The stamp is cancelled on 13 June 2001 in Melbourne with a local post cancel. The issue celebrates the inaugural inductees into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame, and the image I have is of Carbine, winner of the 1890 Melbourne Cup. There are also images of five unnamed horses and a search of the Wikipedia shows that they are Bernborough, Kingston Town, Phar Lap, Carbine and Tulloch, the inaugural inductees.

And now for a little group of labels that have been sent to me by a reader who wishes to remain anonymous.

ScoutingTwo stamps, one commemorating the centenary of Scouting in the UK, and the other 90 years of scouting in Latvia. The www was no help to me with the Exeter one, (fig. 7), but the Latvian one, (fig. 8), was a little more forthcoming. This label was issued in two types, one with Latvian text and the other

with English text. General Goppers was instrumental in the survival of the scouting movement in Latvia after the Russian invasion of Latvia. The Communist Government banned scouts but the General took the movement underground by operating without uniforms and in the forests. General Goppers was killed by the Russians in 1941, but the scouting movement continued.

Riga 800This label, (fig 9), commemorates the 800th anniversary of the city of Riga, Latvia, and is also a fund raiser for the General Goppers Fund. The Wikipedia also records the General Goppers Fund, but does not go into detail about the fund or its purpose.

New Zealand TB LabelAnother anti Tuberculosis label, this time from New Zealand. (Fig. 10). The Wellington Tb and Respiratory Diseases Association.

Guide DogsAn attractive label, (fig. 11), that any dog loving reader and exhibitor would be pleased to have in an Open Class exhibit at an exhibition. Guide Dogs Victoria with a black Labrador and a large ball. What the Happy Holiday relates to I am not sure.

Captain CookThis interesting strip of labels, (fig. 12), commemorates the 250th anniversary of the birth of Captain James Cook and also publicises National Wildlife Conservation Day 18 November 1978 and the narrow strip, (fig 13), also commemorates the same event. Both have the appearance of possibly coming from a roll of stamps.

54 - Stamp News

This edition of Stamp News sees David Mallen’s last ‘Australian Stamp Variations’ column. David’s columns have been a much needed reference on the varieties (or variations) to be found in each new issue.

Before, starting my regular column in March, let’s take a look at modern varieties and what we can learn from them.

Where do I find varieties?Prestige booklets and limited edition items regularly contain stamps in a new format, along with reprints or design changes. Yet, many modern varieties can be obtained very cheaply, and sometimes you might even get one for free!

The stamps from exhibitions sheets often contain (minor) design changes. The 55c Anzac Biscuit stamp from the 2009 Melbourne Stampshow miniature sheet is subtly different to the sheet stamp, with a grey rectangle behind ‘AUSTRALIA’ (Figure 1).

The nine new stamps in the 2009 Hong Kong souvenir sheet escaped the attention of most

collectors. The Zodiac sheet stamps were die-stamped with red foil, but this was omitted from the souvenir sheet stamps (Figure 2). The 2010 Beijing Expo sheet also has the die-stamping omitted, and I wonder if the same will occur with the Hawkers Bazaar sheet to be issued on 4 February (the incorrect date is printed in the Stamp Bulletin).

Reprints are another great source of inexpensive varieties. During 2006 the 65c Rockclimbing definitive was reprinted, but few noticed a subtle change in the design - the font used for the hidden date changed (see Figure 3). An ultraviolet (UV) lamp can also reveal more varieties. The 1 koala $1.45 and $2.10 Bush Baby reprints are noted for being paler in colour, but the paper also changed from ordinary to phosphor coated (see Figure 4).

Now, what was this about getting one for free? Five years ago a copy of Stamp News arrived with the stamps in Figure 5 placed on the envelope. Like most of us I cut the stamps from the envelope, but something told me to take a closer look. Unusually the hidden date on the pen stamp was different to the others (Figure 6). I checked all the catalogues I could find, the sets in my collection and those held by dealers, with

no success. Then early in mid-2010 a good friend forwarded me a price list from a Sydney dealer. I bought one of the collections on sale and discovered the source - the sheet of 20 pen stamps with decorative border. So, you never know what might turn up in the mail, including a variety that has been unnoticed for over 10 years!

How do varieties occur? Many of the imperforate, reprinted, die-stamped and gold and silver stamps issued during the year are produced for collectors. While all are valid for postage, very few would turn up in your letterbox. However, many varieties are not intentional, and exist for very good reasons.

While we might grumble about the difficulty of finding gummed stamps on our mail, the number of self-adhesives produced simply

reflects demand. The design of a self-adhesive stamp can differ from the gummed version, due to postal mechanisation. During the processing of mail, stamped mail is scanned by a UV light, checking the envelope has a stamp and positioning it for cancelling and sorting. While most gummed stamps are printed on phosphor coated paper, self-adhesive stamps are printed on ordinary paper, with phosphor tagging applied over the image. To improve the readability, the phosphor is applied to the light coloured areas of a stamp. Designs with dark colours often have a white or light coloured border added. Other designs, such as the 2009 Dolphins issue, are

subtly altered (see Figure 7).Some varieties occur because of a change in

printer, or printing technology. During 2010 we had a number of self-adhesives printed by both McKellar Renown and Pemara Labels. The use of two printers, while doubling the cost for collectors as each printer’s output is subtly different, was probably necessary to maintain supply of self-adhesive stamps. Australia Post may also use a particular printer depending on the items produced, for example Pemara is a specialist in printer self-adhesive labels.

Can we learn anything from modern varieties? If you are like me, then you will find the production of stamps just as interesting as collecting them.

Each year’s imperforate sheet provides information which is normally unavailable to collectors, as it trimmed off before sheets are sent to post offices. This year’s Centenary of Australian Coinage imperforate sheet revealed much more. The ‘McKR’ logo at the top of the sheet (Figure 8), indicates the printer used was changed at the last minute. Just below McKellar Renown’s logo is the embossed logo of Foilmasters, who no doubt embossed the coins.

The use of elliptical perforations in one of the Melbourne Cup Folder miniature sheets took me aback (Figure 9 shows one of the stamps). Since when did Sprintpak own such a perforating pin, and why was it used for this sheet? Perhaps this was a trial, with plans for the use of elliptical perforations in the future? The same folder also gives information on the production of the gold and silver stamps. I never knew these stamps were produced by PAMP (Produits Artistiques Métaux Précieux) in Switzerland.

One of the cheapest Impressions products this year, was the National Service Memorial Stamplet

pack. As David has mentioned this product contains a small digitally printed miniature sheet (or stamplet). The printing process is not the same as the ‘instant’ Sydney and Beijing gold medallist stamps. Rather these sheets were printed by Embassy Print using a Hewlett-Packard Indigo digital press. Stamps are printed with lithographic quality, but each stamplet can be personalised with a serviceman’s name, rank and serial number. This technology has much potential, with the Irish post office using the Indigo press for their ‘stamps on a roll’.

Where can I find out more information?Stamp News regularly features articles on modern Australian stamps. The Stamp Bulletin also contains technical information on each new issue. At times this information is subject to change, and I know Australia Post’s website is updated quickly when errors are found. The staff of

Australia Post’s Philatelic Group have also been a great help to me, always taking the time to answer questions.

The major catalogues include varieties at different levels (you often need to read the introduction to find out what they do and don’t list). Dealer price lists and websites can also provide information. I also run my own website at http://stamps.chrisdehaer.com.au

which reviews each issue. Finally, you can be a source of

information. If you see anything new or unusual then drop me an e-mail at [email protected] or write to PO Box 1448, Booragoon WA 6954. You never know what might turn up at your local post office or in your letterbox.

WorldWide NeW issues

58 - Stamp News

In the second part of this series we commemorate additional Royal Navy vessels that visited Pitcairn and contributed to improving the life of resident Pitcairners. From providing medical services and judicial duties, to even providing a source of names for new born children, the ships have become part of Pitcairn's history. This issue highlights six more vessels that visited between 1898 and 2001 and have not previously appeared in a Pitcairn stamp issue.

HMS Royalist - built in 1883, She was chosen to convey a judicial commission to Pitcairn in 1898. The mission was to conduct the trial of Harry Albert Christian for wilful murder of Julia Warren and her child who Christian fathered. Found guilty, he was taken aboard the Royalist in irons and hung that same year in Korovou Gaol, Fiji.

HMS Cambrian and Flora - these 2nd class cruisers stopped off at Pitcairn in 1906 and during their five day visit, a torpedo party blasted a boat passage in Bounty Bay. When Millie Flora Coffin was born in 1907 she carried on the tradition of some island children being given names which commemorated naval visits. Both ships revisited Pitcairn in 1909.

HMS Aigerine - carrying both sail and steam this sloop was built in 1895 and visited Pitcairn in 1911 and 1913. Her second visit was more beneficial to the Islanders when Henderson island was reviewed, the inhabitants of Pitcairn island were documented and photographed and the ship's surgeon checked all for disease. None was found.

HMS Leander - this light cruiser was launched in 1931 and acquired by New Zealand on loan. En-route to NZ she visited all four islands of the Pitcairn group and her visits were highlighted by the use of her amphibious Walrus aircraft. The plane

took aerial photographs to investigate possible flying boat and landplane bases for a projected trans-Pacific extension of Imperial Airways Far East route.

HMS Monmouth - nicknamed the "Black Duke", the frigate Monmouth arrived at Pitcairn on 28 May 1995 and, with the RFA Brambleleaf stayed for two days. The Monmouth's helicopter

was put to good use ferrying officials.HMS Sutherland -launched in 1996, this Type

23 frigate visited Pitcairn in 2001 carrying the Governor of Pitcairn, Martin Williams and his wife Sue. Together with the RFA Bayleaf, the Sutherland made a two day visit enabling the Governor to attend official engagements.

64 - Stamp News

In the wonderful world of philately you frequently encounter exceptional people. One such person is undoubtedly Dr. Thebussem. He was the very first Spaniard to write about our hobby. On two occasions the Spanish Postal Service has honoured this philatelic pioneer with stamps but more about that later.

Dr. Thebussem’s real name was Mariano Pardo de Figueroa y de la Serna. As the name indicates, his family belonged to the Spanish nobility. He was born in 1828 in Medina Sidonia, an ancient town in the province of Cádiz located in the south of Spain.

After law studies in Madrid he obtained his doctorate in 1854. Mariano then travelled to several European countries and to the north of Africa before

returning to his home town for good. He passed away in 1918.

Pardo de Figueroa’s literary production is quite extensive. He not only wrote about legal matters but also about gastronomy, history, theatre and bull-fighting. Many of his texts dealt with the work of Miguel de Cervantes (shown here on a 1916 service stamp). Finally he wrote extensively about philately and ex libris.

Many of his texts were published under his pen name of Dr. Thebussem. It is an anagram of the Spanish word embustes which can be translated into English as lies or untruths. By adding the prefix TH he wanted to make the name sound German. The idea was to be able to comment on different Spanish

topics from the point of view of a foreign observer.Medina Sidonia was and still is a small town.

This of course created limitations for the creative and very productive Dr. Thebussem. He solved the problem of provincial isolation by maintaining correspondence with numerous people both in Spain and abroad. Today more than 12.000 letters penned by Pardo de Figueroa have been recorded. His extensive archive of a philatelic nature was donated by his family to the postal museum in Madrid in 1920.

Spain released its very first stamps in 1850. It can be assumed that this was something that the 22-year-old Mariano appreciated very much. However, the hobby of stamp collecting was slow

in getting off the ground in Spain. It is a fact that Dr. Thebussem was the pioneer of

Spanish philatelic literature. In 1871, he published a text entitled KPANKLA. This extremely curious title has absolutely nothing to do with philately. During one of his many walks in Medina Sidonia he happened to come to a warehouse where the strange word figured prominently on the wall.

His research revealed that the warehouse belonged to a company selling lime. The people running the company didn’t seem to know how to spell. In fact, the strange word is supposed to be “Cal para calar” which I believe means “Lime suitable for white washing houses”.

In this rather peculiar way Dr. Thebussem points

to the problems of the Spanish educational system. He suggests that schools should introduce lessons explaining how to write addresses correctly on letters. In the text he gives numerous examples of completely useless addresses which made it impossible for the post office to deliver the mail. He apparently had accumulated a large amount of letters with strange addresses. One of the most common mistakes was the omission of the town’s name.

Another topic which interested Dr. Thebussem greatly was the recent introduction of post cards in Austria. He believed in this inexpensive way of sending short messages. He discussed at length the possibility that postal officials would be able to read the messages but he did not believe this would be a major problem.

The Spanish post office had decided to release post cards but they never materialized. Thus he decided to have his own post cards printed. They were issued in May 1873 and they created a lot of attention in the press both in Spain and abroad.

On December 1, 1873 the Spanish post office finally released its first post card much to the satisfaction of Dr. Thebussem.

Our dear doctor took a strong interest in the Spanish language. In 1873, Spain issued a rather unusual stamp comprising four parts intended for printed matter. The value of the stamp is 1 céntimo with each part valued at ¼ céntimo.

Dr. Thebussem noticed that the value was indicated in the plural form – céntimos which of course is not really correct (it’s a bit like one cents!). Shown here is the reissue of 1877 printed in green – it seems the postal officials didn’t read Dr. Thebussem’s comments – the value still carries the plural form.

Another subject which Dr. Thebussem wrote about is the name of our hobby. Should it be philatelia or timbrología? Under the heading of philately he only included postal issues and under the second heading he also had revenues and other stamp-like labels. It is interesting to note that the two terms are still being used in France to this day.

He frequently chastised the poor designs of his

country’s stamps. He also complained about the quality of Spanish postmarks which were generally illegible.

Most of Dr. Thebussem’s texts were published as letters to the editor in a variety of magazines. They were often addressed to specific people. One of the magazines which printed many of his texts on philately and postal matters was El Averiguador in Madrid.

In 1876, he published an article called “Literatura Filatélica en España” in which he discussed the problems associated with compiling a catalogue of stamps. “Algo de Philatelia” was issued in 1899 and it was one of his last pieces of philatelic writing.

Many of his writings dealt with the need for improvements of the Spanish postal services. He also asked for better working conditions for post office employees. On March 20, 1880 Don Mariano Pardo de Figueroa was appointed honorary postman in recognition of his many services to the Spanish Post Office.

An honorary postman is allowed to wear a post office uniform but he is not entitled to any pay. However, he enjoys the privilege of mailing all his letters free of charge provided that they are franked with a special cancel. Dr. Thebussem used five different postmarks over the years. Four of the cancels have the word Cartero (= postman) spelt as KRTRO which of course relates to his first text entitled KPANKLA.

It is quite popular to collect Dr. Thebussem covers and in Spain such covers sell for more than $100 each.

So far the Spanish Post Office has appointed a total of five different honorary postmen. The most well-known is undoubtedly the Nobel Literature Prize laureate Camilo José Cela who was made a Cartero honorario in 1982.

On Stamp Day in 1944, Dr. Thebussem was depicted on a 5-peseta airmail stamp. A few imperforate copies have reached the marketplace and are major rarities today.

In 1981, the Madrid postal museum was featured on a four-stamp souvenir sheet. The 100-peseta

value depicts some of Dr. Thebussem’s books, his cancel and other postal paraphernalia.

Rather amazingly, Dr. Thebussem was never a stamp collector despite his strong interest in philately and postal matters. In 2003, Puerta del Sol, a cultural magazine published in Medina Sidonia, released a special issue devoted to the 175th birthday of Dr. Thebussem. The magazine features a variety of articles devoted to Don Mariano Pardo de Figueroa’s many achievements.

In the 1960s, a publishing company in Barcelona released two books comprising a selection of Dr. Thebussem’s many philatelic writings from the early 1870s.
