FLOOD BUYOUT NEWS

Attention SnowBirds, and “Worldly Travelers”

Please let us know when you move, as sub-

mitting a change of address to the Lodge is

extremely important. Updating your address

keeps you and the Lodge informed, and it

saves undue postage. Thank you.

I wish I could give you any news, good or bad, on the buyout pro-

cess. We are at a standstill – waiting for the appraisal, waiting for a

hearing date, waiting for an answer, wondering what we can do to

move forward. Very frustrating at this point, but we will continue

to work for the betterment of the Moose Lodge. Mike S.

Moose veterans are encouraged to self-identify or regis-

ter by calling Member Services at (630) 906-3658 or

For many years the Sons of Norway has volunteered to

work at quarterly Fish Fry night. This allowed our regular volun-

teers a night off so they could sit and enjoy the evening. But due to

various reasons they will not be continuing this tradition. Therefore

if you belong to a club or organization that would be interested

in this please contact the office for the details Again, we extend our thanks to the members of the Sons

of Norway for their past participation, their great service to the

Moose, and the lasting friendships acquired during their years of

breading, serving, cleaning, bussing tables, and serving ice cream

during the fish fry.

Coming in August—the International Spe-

cial Olympics Softball Tournament to Bis-

marck ND and being hosted by the Moose

Lodges in North and South Dakota. The

dates are August 17th to 20th. Volunteers

are needed in several areas and rooms will

be provided along with some meals.

More information and sign up sheets are

coming along with a website. We would

like to see 10 to 15 people from the

Lodge represent Minot. This will be a

great time. Please contact the office for

more information and watch the board

for posters.

We are spiffing up the Moose float, getting it

ready for the State Fair Parade and looking for

riders, volunteer help, and items to hand out.

at 838-6387!

new members to the Minot Lodge, loved to

play pinochle and pool and was a major

driving force in building our Lodge into

GOVERNOR’S COLUMN Greetings from the Governor,

Summer is here! As I write this month’s column we are into the

third week of June, and while I’m sure we all appreciate our long warm

days and beautiful evenings I can’t help but ask - Where is the rain? Usual-

ly we have four to five inches by early June, and this year my rain gauge

has yet to see even a tenth of an inch. We haven’t even gotten to the long

hot days of July and August, and Minot and other surrounding communi-

ties are already talking burn bans and water rationing - and of course a

fireworks ban over the 4th of July. By the time you read this month’s col-

umn it’s entirely possible we could have some significant precipitation and

our gardens will be flourishing, the lawns will be lush and green, and most

importantly the crops will be healthy, but for now I’d just like to walk on

my grass and not hear a crunching sound. (And does the wind have to

reach 25-30 mph every afternoon?) How ironic that our lodge, along with

many other individuals in our community, is in the midst of flood buyout

discussions yet we could be staring down a long hot summer of draught.

July in Minot means it’s time for one of the biggest celebrations

of the year - the North Dakota State Fair. Long sweaty days taking the kids

around the midway and being insulted by carnival barkers, the sweet smell

of fresh cow manure in the morning, ruining a pair of shoes in the beer

gardens, and that queasy feeling in your stomach after you’ve eaten a foot-

long with too many raw onions. Don’t you just love it? Once again the

Minot Moose Lodge will be entering our float in the State Fair Parade on

Saturday, July 22nd. Wally Holter and Heidi Price have generously agreed

to co-chair our parade event this year. I’m not sure of all they have

planned, but I hear there may be some karaoke in some of our futures. We

need some wild and crazy volunteers to help the Minot Moose Lodge put

our best foot forward. Anyone interested in helping out can call the Moose

office (838-6387) or Heidi (833-9334). It’s a great way to spend a morn-

ing, greet some friends along the parade route, and most importantly, get

in to the fair free on Saturday. All you have to do is ride on the float and

wave.

Speaking of volunteers, all you Moose Legion members out

there, the monthly LOOM breakfast held on the third Sunday of every

month could use your help. If you’ve ever come down to the Moose Lodge

for their haystacks or biscuits & gravy, you know there isn’t a better break-

fast deal in town. However there is a relatively small group of people that

help out every month, and they could use a break now and then. If you’re

interested in helping out with the LOOM breakfast, even if it’s only every

couple of months, drop a line to Bernie Gangl (240-7780). I’m sure he can

find a spot for you.

I’d like to end this months column with a note of both great sad-

ness and tremendous gratitude. As many of you are aware, former Minot

Moose Lodge Governor Dan Haugeberg passed away in May. Although I

didn’t get the chance to know Don well I have talked to many of you who

did, and everyone who knew him and whose lives he touched, had the

kindest of words for Don. In 2001 he received the most coveted degree of

the Order, the Pilgrim Degree of Merit, for his outstanding service to the

Minot Moose Lodge. Administrator Mike Stenvold informed us that Don

signed up 410 members in his years of service to the Moose. 410!! The

Minot Moose Lodge was very dear to his heart and he will be missed by

many. Here’s to you Don Haugeberg - your legacy and lasting memory

will be with the Minot Moose Lodge No.822 forever. Thanks for all you

did.

Fraternally Yours,

Rich Feldner

Editor’s note: the day after Rich submitted his column, Minot had an inch

of rain. He may have a new calling as “Rainmaker”!

WOMEN OF THE MOOSE

Happy Independence Day!

Due to the 4th of July holiday weekend, the Women of the

Moose monthly breakfast will be on Sunday, July 9th. Please come

enjoy our warm and tasty infamous French Toast, with sausage,

orange juice, and coffee for the same mere $6. Proceeds enable us

to support Mooseheart, Moosehaven, and Minot Community Ser-

vices.

Please join us in congratulating Michael Hauf on his ap-

pointment as the Moose International Moose Legion President!

Not only is this a well-earned privilege for Mike, but also an honor

for our Lodge to have him as a member here too.

Several members are journeying to Tampa for the National

International Moose Convention June 30-July 4th. In the next

newsletter, we will have news from the Convention.

Have a Safe Independence Day!
