This publication has been prepared to inform our customers and end users about

the product range and technical capabilities of our specialty metals wire and bar

products produced at our cold drawing mill at Altona North, Victoria, Australia.

Atlas Specialty Metals and its products

Atlas’ operations have a history in Australia dating back to 1939 when the

Company was established by its then Canadian parent as a supplier of specialty

metals for the Australian war effort. Today, through an extensive network of 20

warehousing and distribution centres the Company is the major stockist and

distributor of a full range of specialty metals flat, section and tubular profile

including stainless steel, aluminium, engineering steels, quenched & tempered

plate and specialised carbon steels.

The Atlas Wire & Bar Mill

The Atlas Wire and Bar mill was opened in 1962 and since then has played an

important role in the Australian and New Zealand manufacturing industry as a

supplier of specialty metal wire and bar product. Today the mill remains as the

only commercial operated mill of its type in this region of the world.

Rod, wire & bar

The definitions for rod, wire and bar are universally agreed, but in general can

be described as follows:

Rod is the hot rolled feed produced in coil and purchased by the down stream

drawers, such as the Atlas Wire and Bar Mill. This product is then cold drawn

down to wire or bar with diameters, properties and finishes suitable for further

processing in industrial applications.

Wire is typically supplied as coil and bar is supplied as straightened and cut

lengths.

Atlas Wire & Bar facilities & processes

The Atlas Wire and Bar Mill draws down coiled stainless and high-speed steel

wire rod until the wire or bar diameter meets the customer’s required diameter,

mechanical properties and finish.

The minimum diameter of wire rod supplied to Atlas is 5.5mm and the Atlas

Wire and Bar Mill is capable of drawing wire and bar down to diameters

between 1mm and 16mm.

Inorganic salt coating bath

Multi die wire drawing

The wire rod is delivered to Atlas’ bar and wire mill where it is plunged into

an inorganic salt coating bath and then baked in preparation for the drawing

process. Once the coated wire rod has dried, it is fed through a series of multi-

hole and some single-hole wire drawing machines, which reduce the wire rod

to the required diameter.

The wire can also be heat treated (annealed) to soften it, making it more

malleable. The wire is fed through a furnace, where it is heated, quenched in

water and coated. It may then be drawn again to the exact diameter required

by the customer.

Wire & bar products

Wire and bar is produced to meet the demands of many industries, in the

following broad categories:-

- Weaving wire for manufacture of woven and welded screens and belts.

- Forming wire for a vast array of clips, handles, frames, rings and brackets, in

strengths from annealed through intermediate tempers to full hard.

- Cold heading wire for production of corrosion resistant fasteners including

roofing screws, self tapping screws, bolts, set screws, nails, rivets and staples.

- Spring temper wire - a very high strength wire used in production of corrosion

resistant coiled springs.

- Special Products such as flattened wire, can be produced to customer

requirements.

- Bar in standard bright drawn and polished condition in standard or special

diameters. High strength bar or other cut length products with special technical

requirements can also be produced.

Grades available

Stainless steel wire and bar is available in standard grades 302HQ, 303, 304, 316,

316L, 416 and 430, and a range of other grades specific to particular

industries as required. (See the Application Table on page 18). Special grades can

be sourced for new applications.

Tensile strength

Typical tensile strength ranges (MPa)

Wire and bar can be supplied with a tensile strength suitable for the particular

application. Reference should be made to the Atlas Technical Department in

deciding the optimum tensile strength required for specific applications.

Where a non-standard tensile strength is specified a 200 MPa range (± 100 MPa

tolerance) is normally required. This wire can also be supplied in straightened

and cut lengths.

Values listed cover all sizes.

The usual grades produced are 302HQ and 316. A much lesser quantity of 430 is

produced for heading applications. All of these grades are suitable to produce

the full range of headed fasteners including cross recess pan-heads and cross

recess counter-sunk heads.

Type 304 is used in some applications where the degree of cold forming is not

as severe or where a higher strength fastener is required, such as some nails and

self drilling screws.

Heading wire is normally supplied with a final light “skin pass” draw, although

that destined for very severe cold heading operations can be “annealed at final

size” - this is the softest possible condition.

The most popular coating is Atlas “Supercoat”, which is a mixture of an

inorganic salt carrier coating into which the wire is dipped, plus some residual

drawing soap. This coating is subject to damage by handling and by the

environment, particularly by water. If well looked after, its life expectancy is in

excess of six months and is usually well over a year. Some simple heading jobs

such as nails and hinge pins do not require supercoat; normal Cold Drawn or

Bright Drawn finishes are acceptable.

Tensile strengths

These tensile strength maximum values are in accordance with ASTM A493.

Other grades and tensile strength ranges may be available with prior agreement.

Note

The table gives maximum tensile strengths for sizes 2.5mm and larger. Slightly

higher values may apply to smaller sizes.

The standard finish for HQ wire is annealed and skin passed (lightly drawn).

Super coat: (SC) - Non metallic lubricant coating - this is the standard heading

wire coating.

Bare - all coatings removed.

Spring wire

Types 304 and 316 are the two most common grades used for spring wire.

The spring coating is usually left on the wire to assist spring making; this is the

same coating as “supercoat” left on heading wire. Imported spring wire may

alternatively be either nickel plated or “resin” coated (a very thin transparent

coating of PVC).

Coated wire is essential for spring coiling. Very tightly wound springs,

particularly of large diameter wire, tend to be most demanding of coatings.

Atlas use special versions of Types 304 and 316 for spring wire. These have

carefully controlled analysis ranges to ensure the required tensile strength

values are obtained.

Spring temper wire has the highest tensile strength of any of the stainless steel

wires; the standard strength is in conformance with ASTM A313M, as listed later

in this section, but wire can be supplied to conform with other specifications,

such as JIS G4314, if required.

Coating

Standard coating is Atlas “Spring Coat”, to assist in spring forming. By special

arrangement wire may be supplied bare to assist with soldering. Spring coat can

if necessary be removed by immersion in hot alkaline detergent.

Straightened and cut lengths

Spring temper wire in the diameter 1.6mm to 10mm can be supplied as

straightened and cut bar lengths, with tensile strength specifications of 90% of

the values in the previous table.

Stress relief

Stress relief of finished springs in the temperature range of approximately 200-

400˚C can improve their elastic properties. Higher temperatures will result in

permanent softening and (above 450˚C) carbide precipitation. These

temperatures must be avoided.

Types 304 and 316 and some 430 are used in a variety of tensile strengths,

diameters and coatings for weaving. These wires find many applications in

mining and processing screens and mesh link belts for mineral processing, heat

treatment and in the food industry.

Specific tensile strengths can be produced to customers’ requirements; about 1/4

Hard or 1/2 Hard wire is usually produced (usually 900-1100 MPa or 1000-1200

MPa). Cast and helix may also be specified for some applications. A range of

standard weaving wires is available ex-stock.

Product range

Standard finishes from Atlas Wire & Bar Mill are bright drawn & polished (“BD Pol”) and centreless ground

(“CG”), produced to h9 tolerances as below. In addition those products required with special tolerances

(h10 or others as agreed) may be available in cold drawn (“CD”) and bright drawn (“BD”) finishes.

Stainless Steel bar outside the range produced in Australia by Atlas Wire & Bar Mill is imported and

stocked in standard sizes. Full details of these products are given in the Atlas Specialty Metals Product

Reference Manual.

Water soluble coatings applied by dipping and baking to act as a lubricant

carrier in subsequent forming. Wire can be drawn in soap to provide an

additional stearate lubricant coating.

Lime A thin uniform coating of lime applied by dipping and baking.

Soap coated CD wire is usually supplied with drawing soap left on to facilitate

subsequent forming.

Oiled BD bar and wire can, if required, be supplied with the drawing oil left on to

assist subsequent fabrication.

Stainless steel wire is available in a range of packages:

- Catch Weight Coils: bundled and wrapped as required, in specific coil weights

if requested.

- Stem Packs: up to 1000kg, in a single length in some sizes. Stems are tubular

steel frames which improve efficiency of product handling and reduce set-ups.

- Special packaging: includes spools and palletised cartons.

Can be packed in returnable racks.

Wire cast & helix

The “cast” and “helix” are important features of the finished wire and define

how well it is “killed” (not to be confused with “killed” carbon or low alloy

steel, where killing refers to the deoxidation practice used in melting the steel).

These properties are observed by cutting a single lap from the final coil and

laying it on a flat surface. The cast is the natural loop diameter which this free

lap takes up; the helix is the difference in height between its two cut ends i.e.

how much of a rise is present. Zero helix is if the lap lies perfectly flat. The ideal

is a cast equal to the coil diameter and nil helix. Particular requirements for cast

and helix should be discussed at time of order.

Hardening and tempering

Martensitic (400 Series) grades only.

Other tempering temperatures can be used and will result in alternative tensile strengths.

*A double tempering treatment as follows is recommended:

a) 640ºC - 680ºC; followed by

b) 590ºC - 610ºC

Removal of coatings

Spring coat/supercoat Immerse in hot alkaline detergent followed by rinsing.

Lime Short immersion in 20-40% nitric acid followed by washing in hot water.

Passivation

The natural invisible protective film which forms on the surface of stainless steels

can be protected and all traces of iron contamination removed by subjecting

these alloys to strong oxidising chemicals such as nitric acid. All of the 300 series

grades and the 400 series grades containing 16% or more chromium (except free

machining grades such as 303) may be satisfactorily passivated in a 20-50% by

volume solution of nitric acid at temperatures ranging from 50-70ºC for periods

from 10-30 minutes. Care must be taken when passivating the straight

chromium grades containing 12-14% chromium (e.g. Type 410). A solution

containing 20-50% nitric acid should be used. The temperature range should be

between 40 and 55ºC. Full details of pickling and passivation procedures can be

found in ASTM A380, in the Technical Handbook or at the Atlas Speciality Metals

website.

Improved hot and cold forming characteristics over those of 303 and provides a smoothermachined surface finish. Machinability rate is slightly reduced.

Good resistance to corrosion, good for malleability and weldability. Most commonly usedgrade. Wine storage, laundry & kitchen products, water, food, architectural, cryogenic andhigh temperature applications. UGIMA 304 – high machinability bar with some properties.

Corrosion resistance as for 304, low carbon variation of 304 for heavy gauge weldedsections.

Excellent resistance to corrosion, particularly attack by hot sulphur compounds in oxidisinggases. Sulphite liquors and acids such as acetic, citric, lactic & nitric. Welding wire forjoining dissimilar steels.

Excellent corrosion resistance at normal temperatures. Good resistance to oxidisation andcarburising atmospheres in high temperatures over 850ºC to 1100ºC. Welding wire forjoining dissimilar steels.

High corrosion resistance to the complex sulphur compounds used in pulp & paperprocessing. Also resists attack by marine and corrosive industrial atmospheres. Suitablefor seacoast atmosphere, pulp & paper, heat exchange’s, propeller shafts, dyingequipment. UGIMA 316 high machinability bar, with some properties.

A variation of 316, suitable for heavy gauge welding.

Improved corrosion resistance over type 316. Often successfully applied where type 316has given only moderate performance. Applications such as acetic acid distillation, pulp &paper machinery, ink & dying processes. 317L is a variation of 317 suitable for heavygauge welding.

Excellent corrosion resistance, equivalent to type 302 and 304 in the annealed conditionand superior if the application involves service in 425ºC - 870ºC range. Typical applicationsinclude expansion joints, furnace parts, aerospace and power industries, heat exchangersand steam generators.

This grade is resistant to Chromium Carbide precipitation. This is suitable for partsfabricated by welding or for parts which must operate between 425ºC - 870ºC.

“Super Austenitic” grade with very high corrosion resistance, especially to strong acidsand chlorides.

Excellent high temperature strength and resistance to scaling at high temperatures.

Useful corrosion resistance particularly in wet abrasion environments. Readily welded andformed into tanks, flues, etc.

Resists atmospheric and automotive exhaust gas corrosion. Extensively used in autoexhaust systems and structural applications.

Good combinations of corrosion resistance, formability and mechanical properties. Typicalapplications include automotive trims, element supports, cold headed fasteners, wireshelves.

430F is a free machining version of 430.

Molybdenum improves the pitting resistance over grade 430. Good for automotive trimcomponents.

2205 microstructure in approximately 50% ferrite and 50% austenitic which results in thesteel possessing high strength and hardness and resistance to erosion, fatigue, stresscorrosion cracking and pitting and crevice corrosion.

Resists dry atmospheres, fresh water, mild alkalines and acids, steam and hot gases. Mustbe hardened for maximum heat and corrosion resistance. Typical applications include coldheading, bolts, nuts & screws. Pump parts and shafts, steam and gas turbine parts, mineladder rungs.

Good resistance in the hardened condition to the atmosphere. Food, fresh water and mildalkalies or acids. Higher carbon hardenable grade. Typical applications include cutlery,surgical instruments, shear blades, needle valves.

Excellent resistance to a wide variety of corrosive media. High tensile and torque strength.Pump & boat shafts, nuts, bolts and marine hardware.

Precipitation handling (“Aging”) treatment after machining gives high strength withoutdistortion. Corrosion resistance similar to Type 304.

Placing an order

1. Quantity Specify in kgs

Note 1: Shipping tolerances

Where a minimum quantity is required the order quantity should be increased

accordingly.

NOTE 2: Orders for special and non-standard bar must be specified by weight;

orders for a specific number of bar lengths cannot be accepted. Specific numbers

of standard bars can be supplied if ex-stock only.

2. Grade of steel Specify grade or give the chemical analysis if a special alloy.

3. Condition e.g. Cold drawn (CD)

4. Coatings Specify the surface finish or coating.

5. Diameter Specify in mm, and specify the tolerance if non-standard.

6. Form e.g. Bar or wire in coil.

7. Special e.g. Tensile strength (Tolerance ± 100 MPa), test certification, customer

requirements specification.

8. Packing/ Specify any special instructions e.g. coil weights, “supply on stems”, information

tagging to be written on tags.

9. End-use Specify the end use e.g. cold heading, machining, spring manufacture, weaving etc.
