TRANSCRIPT
LEARNING OUTCOMESAfter completion of this module the
learner will be able to: Describe the purpose of stain removal. Understand the term “selective
polishing.” Recognize the effects polishing may
have on the teeth and present restorations.
Recognize the effects polishing may have on the gingiva.
PURPOSE OF STAIN REMOVAL Esthetics
“Selective Polishing”- indicated only if there is a need for pt tx.
Effects of cleaning and polishing
PURPOSE CONT: Precautions1. Bacteremia potential due to use of
power-driven instruments 2. Manipulation of the gingival tissues
Environmental Factors1. Aerosol Production2. Spatter
EFFECTS ON TEETH Removal of Tooth Structure **polishing for 30 seconds with a pumice paste may
remove as much as 4 um of the outer enamel.
Demineralized Areas Areas of Thin Enamel, Cementum, or
Dentin Care of Restorations and Implants Heat Production (pain and discomfort
for the patient)
EFFECTS ON GINGIVA Trauma to gingival tissues Removal of epithelium Patient Discomfort Pumice = irritation source Foreign body reactions to abrasives
(delayed healing following tissue trauma)
“SELECTIVE” STAIN REMOVAL The decision to polish is based on
consideration for the individual patient.
Patient education and instruction for stain prevention is important .
SUMMARY OF CONTRAINDICATIONS FOR POLISHING
No unsightly stain Characteristics of patients at
risk for (risk for dental caries) Patients with respiratory problems Tooth sensitivity (abrasive agent
may uncover dentinal tubules) Restorations Newly erupted teeth
(mineralization is incomplete) Conditions that require
postponement for later evaluation
