It is my pleasure to share with you through this edition of STAI e-Newsletter the As- sociation’s activities and developments taking place in the global sugar industry. The Indian industry ended the sugar season 2018-19 with a record sugar produc- tion of 33 MT against pro- duction of 32.5 MT in 2017- 18. However domestic con- sumption remained stagnant at 26 MT leading to a huge carryover inventory of 14.5 MT. As every adversity comes with an opportunity, the same has come true for the Indian Sugar Industry as well. As per advanced esti- mates released by ISO, there will be global shortage of 5 MT in the coming sugar sea- son 2019-20, India stands a good chance to export the some of surplus sugar with the assistance of the Central Govt which announced a subsidy of Rs.62.68 billion to export 6 MT of sugar. Ethanol Blending : The Central Govt. for the marketing year 2019- 20, further hiked the price of ethanol made through C molasses from Rs. 43.46/litre to Rs.43.75/litre and ethanol made through B Molasses from Rs 52.43/litre to Rs 54.27/litre. In the marketing year 2019-20 the oil marketing companies are likely to purchase 2.6 billion litres of ethanol against 2.3 billion litres procured in 2018-19. This will assist the sugar mills to convert some of the excess sugar to etha- nol and maintain a balance in the season 2019-20 XXXI ISSCT Congress Comes to India: I have also pleasure in in- forming you that STAI success- fully bid to host the prestigious XXXI Congress of ISSCT in India in December 2022. STAI also successfully organized its flagship event – 77th Annual Con- vention and Sugar Expo 2019 from 17-19 July 2019 at the state-of-the- art Biswa Bangla Convention Cen- tre, Kolkata. The event was at- tended by 750 delegates from India and abroad. Wishing you a very happy and prosperous Diwali and a profit- able Sugar Crushing Season 2019-20. Dear Members, Greetings! It is my pleasure to share with you through this edition of STAI e-Newsletter the As-sociation’s activities and developments taking place in the global sugar industry. The Indian industry ended the sugar season 2018-19 with a record sugar produc-tion of 33 MT against pro-duction of 32.5 MT in 2017-18. Technology Providers Session

The session was chaired by Mr S M Sharma, Life Member, STAI and Co-chaired by Mr Pradeep Tyagi, Council Member, STAI . 9 presentations were made during the session on latest technological innovations in sugar & allied industries by the Technology Pro-viders.

Organizing Cultural Evening has become synonymous

with the Convention. Mr. Eaknarayan Aryal, Consul

General, Consulate of Nepal, Kolkata was the Chief

Guest of the evening .

77th STAI Annual Convention and International Sugar Expo 2019 : New Initiatives being undertaken this year :

NEW INITIATIVES To make the programme of the Convention interesting and lively for the delegates, the STAI Council as a new ini-

tiative introduced the following awards exclusively for the participating delegates attending the technical

sessions – viz. Sugarcane Agriculture Session, Factory Session and Co-products Session

1.The Best Participating Delegate award was given to the participant attending the technical sessions and was

decided through lucky draw by the Session Chairman & Co-chairman .

2.The Most Attentive Participant Award was given to the delegate answering the questions put up by the Ses-

sion Chairman & Co-chairman during the technical sessions.

3.Quiz Contest - A quiz contest was organized by Shrijee group for the participants that took place in Factory

Session and Co Products Session . 10 questions were put up to the delegates and the participant giving right an-

swer were given Gift Vouchers.

In conjunction with the 77th STAI Convention, International Sugar Expo 2019 was also organized wherein 52 technology providers including turn-key plant suppliers, SMEs, consultants etc. from India and abroad show-cased their latest innovations, products & services, for the sugar & allied industry. The Sugar Expo witnessed a large number of visitors from the senior management of Sugar Industry, scientific fraternity and R&D institutes. Over the years the convention and sugar expo have emerged as the most potent forum for showcasing of new technologies, exchange of ideas and a bellwether for the Indian Sugar Industry.

The XXX ISSCT Congress was held

from 2-5 September 2019 at

Tucuman, Argentina. Around 700

delegates from 45 countries

participated in the Congress.

From India 25 delegates attended

& actively participated in various

activities of the Congress.

Technical Presentations

A total of 302 oral and poster

presentations were presented

during the Congress in 5 ISSCT

Commissions, 9 plenary sessions

and 6 workshop reports. Out of

above Indian authors contributed

25 oral and poster presentations

under various sections.

XXXI ISSCT CONGRESS, 2022

AWARDED TO INDIA

At its final Meeting at the XXX

Congress in Argentina in Septem-

ber 2019, the ISSCT Council

decided through a secret vote, as

per ISSCT Constitution, to award

the hosting of the XXXI Congress to

the The Sugar Technologists’

Association of India (STAI).

During the XXX ISSCT, STAI made

a successful bid to host the XXXI

Congress in India.

The XXXI Congress will be held in

Hyderabad International Conven-

tion Centre (HICC) Novotel & HICC

Complex Hyderabad, India in 2022

according the following schedule:

- Pre Congress Tour from 2 and 3

December 2022 in the city of

Pune

-XXXI Congress from 5 to 8 December 2022 in Hyderabad -Post Congress Tour from 10 to 11

December 2022 in and around

Delhi

This will be good opportunity for the

Indian technocrats, researchers,

scientists, technology providers to

participate in the Congress in large

numbers which is being held in ndia

after a span of 22 years.

An attractive programme for the

Congress will be worked out next

year by the Congress Organizing

Committee, ISSCT Executive and

TPC members during their visit to

India next year.

The 1st Meeting of ICUMSA National Committee was held on 18th July 2019 at Kolkata and was attended by 11 members . Mr Sanjay Awasthi, President of INC-ICUMSA chaired the meeting and Dr. (Mrs.) V.S Keskar, Convenor gave brief introduction about the decisions of 31st ICUMSA Ses-sion held in South Africa in Aug 2018. She also gave an update on the Method GS-9 & work to be done by INC Members : Study of Four Methods of Colour Analysis i.e Method No 7, 8, 9,10

Study related to effect of various brands of MPOS on Colour Value of

Sugar.

Possibility of getting analysed the of samples of sugar on ICP-MS for if the

method is to be tested collaboratively and in case any other test method required by sugar industry, work may be initiated.

The proceedings of 77th Annual Convention have been dispatched to the valid members. Proceedings to members in arrears -Assoc iate/Fe l low/ Compan-ion/SME for the year 2019 have not been sent. The First meeting of the Research & Investigation Committee of STAI was held on 19 September 2019 at STAI Office, New Delhi. Shri D K Goel, Convener and Hon. Editor, STAI conducted the meeting which was attended by 10 members.
