Autumn 2019

President’s Message Highlights from our President’s remarks at OSLT’s AGM, Tuesday, September 17, 2019 Here we go again... new season, new members, new board, new plays, new concerts, new water cooler, new sponsors, new program covers, and on we go. It is sooo exciting every time we launch a new year of entertainment.

Our playbill this year is very interesting, offering huge dramatic and theatrical challenges, and stretching our directors, techies, actors, production crews and especially our audience... and this is a good thing. We endeavour every year to learn and grow, and ask our audience to do the same.

Our first production, Sister Act, the musical, is six weeks away from opening night. It is a huge show and many people have used their summer to learn songs, design sets, sew wardrobe, build props and so on. It is an extraordinary company, dedicated and talented, and the prediction is that they will blow you away.

Meanwhile, the second play of the season, West Moon, has held auditions and director Kathleen Cassidy has the odious task of choosing the right actor for the right role.

Pat O'Connor has spent his summer planning, and plotting, and solving the many technical challenges that The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time offers.

Kevin Haxell has already visualized the look of his 1940's satire Born Yesterday, and has pre-ordered the feature drink to be served opening night.

So you see, the 59th season, in many ways, has already begun.

Are you a new member, or perhaps someone who hasn't been involved with a production in a long time, maybe you've just been routinely paying your membership but not reaping the benefits of it? Well come ... step up... get involved. This is why you joined isn't it, because you love Live Theatre, but want to do more than just be in the audience.

Executive Director’s Report

Highlights from our Executive Director’s remarks at OSLT’s AGM, Tuesday, September 17, 2019

OUR 59th season is here at The Roxy Theatre with many wonderful productions. Our Playbill -- Sister Act, West Moon, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and Born Yesterday will make people laugh, think, reflect and relax. The OSLT/ROXY presentations series is also varied and exciting.

Behind the scenes there have been some exciting updates. For fundraising, the Golf Tournament at Legacy Ridge was very successful with another one being planned for 2020. Coming up soon is the Roxy ODEON Nostalgia Night on October 3rd; all proceeds go to our Refresh the Roxy campaign. Come out to watch Coal Miner’s Daughter and experience a night of 80’s nostalgia.

We are updating some of our technology with the purchase of a new projector for the booth and are looking into launching a Home Ticket Printing system in the new year.

Children’s Performing Arts continues to be an important initiative for The Roxy. Lookup Theatre and Christie’s Stage Door were both successful and well attended, and we have school shows booked for March in both French and English.

We would also like to welcome Tessa Al as the newest member of our box office staff.

~ Matt Evans, Executive Director

Financial Report

Farewell!

Being the OSLT Treasurer has been a sometimes pleasure, and an often times adventure into mysterious realms of numbers, balances, bottom lines, and capital projects. I am thankful for the learning experience, and even more thankful that nothing broke while I was on duty!

In this year of many changes, one thing remained stable: OSLT’s financial position. We thank Karen Marcell for attending the AGM and presenting highlights of the audited report on behalf of Baker Tilly. It was with great pleasure that the Board of Directors received Baker Tilly’s Independent Auditor’s Report, which once again showed a positive “bottom line” (excess of revenue over expenditures).

And yet, is it a surprise? We’ve had many changes, yes… our staffing structure, the board of directors’ vision for OSLT, the stage floor, the auditorium… When I reflect on the changes though, what comes to mind is the unchanging, constant heart of OSLT: the volunteers and staff who are committed to our theatre. Given their dedication, it is not surprising that we accomplished a great season, and a solid financial picture.

I am very happy to welcome Cathie Locke back to the board of directors, and to the position of treasurer. I am confident in Cathie’s care for OSLT, her attention to detail, and her big-picture visioning.

On a personal note, I am excited to live vicariously as a theatre go-er, and to take a break from being a theatre do-er. As Janet Suzman once said: “Life is difficult. People want to experience that from the safety of a comfortable seat.” (An Audience with Dame Janet, The Jewish Chronicle, June 2, 2017). Sign me up for a comfortable seat!

~ Michelle Scobie, outgoing Treasurer

Billy Bishop Goes to War

Thursday, November 28, 2019 at 7:30 pm at The Roxy Tickets: $25.00 / $23.00 for season ticket holders Written & composed by John Maclachlan Gray in collaboration with Eric Peterson Billy Bishop Goes to War, the award-winning Canadian musical, brought audiences leaping to their feet at the Roxy Theatre last time through. This beloved show, which won the Governor General’s Literary Award for Drama, pays tribute to Owen Sound’s iconic hometown war hero and flying ace, Billy Bishop. The two-man musical features actor Matt Evans portraying the legendary Bishop, as well as an astonishing 15 other characters. Evans has garnered 5 Best Actor Awards with the Western Ontario Drama League, recently appearing at the Roxy Theatre as lawyer Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird. Matt has also appeared in Canadian feature films including Beowulf & Grendel, Black Swan, Things to Do, and The Birder.

Musician Michael Mulrooney co-pilots Billy Bishop Goes to War with Evans, using the on-stage grand piano to score and punctuate battle scenes, taking us from bar rooms to ball rooms, capturing both humour and heartstrings with skilful musicianship. Mulrooney is a sought-after music director, conductor, pianist and arranger, having worked on the Canadian theatrical productions of The Lion King, Phantom of the Opera, Ragtime, and Showboat. Michael has taught at York University and the Randolph Academy, and is currently a professor at the prestigious Sheridan College Musical Theatre Program.

Featuring The Roxy’s very own Executive Director, Matt Evans as Billy Bishop, this is a fundraiser for the Refresh The Roxy – and NOT TO BE MISSED!

Upcoming Productions: 59th Season, 2019 – 2020 (continued)

West Moon

By: Al Pittman Director: Kathleen Cassidy Producer: Jane Phillips Stage Manager: Karen Twining Auditions were held: Sept 22, 23, 24; call backs Sunday September 29th -- all at the Roxy Production Dates: February 6, 7, 8; 12, 13, 14, 15, 2020 — and WODL festival is during March Break. The playbill team has chosen our play, West Moon, for the second slot in the 2019/2020 playbill and we would like to thank them for giving us a chance to bring this slightly unusual play to the Roxy stage. West Moon is a spooky, heart-warming, humorous and bitter-sweet play from one of Newfoundland’s most revered poets, Al Pittman. The premise of the play is unique and so quintessentially Canadian that we will feel that we have always known these characters and that this story is part of our story. West Moon is full of power, laughter, joy and stubborn resilience. The play lends insight into the rich culture of the 1960's era Newfoundland out ports that were nearly lost when their people were forced to move inland. The play starts with lively Newfoundland music, and then onto the stage comes the Voice. Like most Newfoundlanders, the Voice is warm and welcoming with a knack for storytelling and sets the stage for the story. Then we hear the wind… and the stage goes dark… and with a crack of thunder… we are in the coastal community of St. Kevins on November 2nd, 1965… All Souls Night. One by one, we meet the 10 residents … of the cemetery… (da da da dah) On All Souls Night every year the souls of the dead of St. Kevins are able to talk to each other. They come alive to us and their story

captures the power, laughter, joy and stubborn resilience of those who populated the out ports of yesteryear, back before they were driven from their homes by the depleted fishing grounds to the so-called Growth Centres. ~ Kathleen Cassidy, Director and Jane Phillips, Producer

Upcoming Productions: 59th Season, 2019 – 2020 (continued)

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time Play by: Simon Stephens, based on the novel by Mark Haddon Director: Pat O’Connor Producer: Laura Wood Stage Manager: Connie Vincent Production Dates: March 26, 27, 28; April 1, 2, 3, 4, 2020 Auditions: November 25 & 26 for Christopher; November 27, 28, 29 for lead adults and the company (12 adults ages 20 - 70)

“And for its 6th Tony Award, this time for the ‘Biggest Mouthful for a Play Title,” the winner is The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time.”

This play traces the courageous journey of discovery for Christopher, a teenager on the autistic spectrum, and is presented through short scenes in and around London, England. The set is unique in that the walls will be three sizeable projection screens onto which back-projections will portray images, colours, and text. Richard Thomas will create this magic and the set concept is largely the result of conversations with Gary Byers who proves, again, his value to OSLT.

The stage furnishings are simply ten boxes which represent seats, counters, luggage, shelves, and even a toilet. The boxes will do double duty by housing all the props used on stage, the props that Jack Goad will be in charge of. The boxes, along with the masking flats for the screen walls, will be built by Andrew Dinsmore and Murray Smith.

The Production Team is headed by Laura Wood, the Producer; Pat O’Connor, Director; Connie Vincent, Stage Manager assisted by Kathleen Murphy and Fiona McConachie-Anderson. The sound track of music and sound effects will be engineered by Gordon McConachie-Anderson and the complicated lighting design will be handled by Bill Murphy. Susan Sankey will provide the costumes that will live on stage and be accessed by cast as they play varied roles.

Mike Tettenborn and Dianne Bray are building models of several iconic London city features. In fact, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament have already been completed. Martin Cooper, meanwhile, will create “the dog” of Night-time fame, as well as a cute animatronic rat named Toby.

The Cast of 12 is made up of two male leads: Christopher’s father Ed (30 - 50) and Christopher, himself.

Three female leads are Siobhan, Christopher’s teacher (25 - 55), his mother Judy (30 - 50) and Mrs. Alexander, an older neighbour (50 - 70).

There are three other women and four men who play multiple roles and they are all between 20 and 50 years of age.

Auditions will be held November 25 & 26 for Christopher; November 27, 28, 29 for lead adults and the company (12 adults ages 20 - 70). Rehearsals will begin December 2 and 9, 2019 and recommence January 3, 2020. If, in the Night-time or daytime, you are Curious about the play, you can pick up a script at the box office.

Upcoming Productions: 59th Season, 2019 – 2020 (continued)

Born Yesterday By: Garson Kanin Director: Kevin Haxell Producer: Sandi Holland Stage Manager: Lisa Miller Production Dates: June 4, 5, 6; 10, 11, 12, 13, 2020 Auditions: Tuesday, February 18 and Wednesday, February 19; Call backs: Sunday, February 23. I’m happy to be the producer of Garson Kanin’s play Born Yesterday, which will be OSLT’s June 2020 show. I’m also quite nervous as a first-time producer. But most of my fears have been allayed by a really supportive mentor, Jane Phillips, along with other OSLT members who have produced shows in the past.

Born Yesterday is a play from the late 1940’s which is extraordinarily appropriate in today’s political environment. It is a story about indecent folks that believe that they can buy anything or anyone that they choose, that it’s just a matter of price. But it is also a story full of hope that uplifts audiences as they watch the success enjoyed by the downtrodden when they are educated and equalized. There are many comedic moments scattered throughout the entire play. The set and costumes will be eye candy for the audience.

There are 15 roles, from major to minor non-speaking roles. In some cases, it may be possible for an actor to play two different roles. I would encourage anyone that would like to experience being on the stage to audition, even if you’ve never acted before.

Our team is not yet complete but so far, so great! Our director is Kevin Haxell; our stage manager is Lisa Miller; Lisa’s assistant stage managers are Val Prettie and Sandy Lemaitre. Lisa is happy to welcome future back stage crew to shadow and learn from her team.

We don’t have a lead builder committed yet but have offers from some members to assist the build by completing specialty tasks. Anyone interested in being our lead builder, please contact me! I’ll help you build both your team and your set!

Audition dates are planned for Feb 18th and 19th, 2020 and will be by appointment. Watch future newsletters, social media and the Roxy website for more details on auditions. Scripts are now available at the box office

In the meanwhile, Kevin and I will be researching the 1940’s cocktails that we hope the Roxy bar will have available throughout the production which may include Sidecars, Grasshoppers and Between the Sheets!

Report on … “The Roxy 2nd Annual Charity Golf Tournament”

Our Golf Tournament, July 4th 2019 at Legacy Ridge, was a success in every way. Mother Nature gave us her best sunshine & heat, 87 golfers had a great time, many sponsors were well represented at the tournament, we handed out tons of great prizes, sold lots of raffle tickets, Silent Auction items were a hit and we made close to $15,000 towards the Refresh the ROXY Campaign. A year’s worth of planning paid off. A major shout out to OSLT volunteers Carroll & Paul Flood, Judy Beth Armstrong, Helen Harrison, Jo-Ann Dowdall, Lynn Sparkhall, Lisa Miller & Libby Rea for running the registration table, selling raffle tickets, and monitoring the Hole-in-One contest. I want to extend my sincere thanks to my committee members whose hard work was very evident on tournament day. A huge thanks to Marg Benedict, Don Sankey, Sam McEvenue (Legacy Ridge), Brittany Graul (Scotiabank), Collene Bullock and Laura Wood. These folks put the FUN in fundraising!!! Keep an eye out for an email in the next few weeks as we will be asking for donations to the kitchen. As well, if you love purging and sorting, join us October 7th. The more the merrier.

Corkscrew City Tour

On the first Sunday of the months from June to October, OSLT partnered with Owen Sound’s Corkscrew City Bus Tour which took up to 16 people on the prohibition-focused jaunt around our city, under the guidance of Richard Thomas. We have a very interesting history with alcohol in this city.

Part of this tour was a stop at the Women's Temperance Hall (now the Tone Studio) on the corner of 1st Ave West and 9th Street West where a group of OSLT volunteers re-enacted a Temperance gathering, complete with a short sermon and a signing of “the pledge”. The two main characters in this short enactment were Mrs. Mary Doyle and the Reverend Kennedy Creighton, the two pillars of the early Temperance Movement in Owen Sound. The other characters presented were just banner-waving enthusiasts.

Thanks go to Paul and Carroll Flood for taking the lead in this little bit of fun. I will always remember the look on people's faces as Paul leaned into them and sniffed their breath for alcohol.

Thanks also to Susan Sankey, Valerie Prettie and Cathie Tilley for being so prim and proper. And thanks to the summer students from Grey Roots Museum who served iced tea and scones to everyone.

Before the bus left, we all gathered for a picture on the front steps of the Temperance Hall, holding our "Strong Women Against Strong Spirits" signs. I sent that picture to my son. He texted me back. "I feel it incumbent upon me to point out the inherent hypocrisy of this photo..." Kids nowadays. Cheers.

Again this year, OSLT members were invited to don period costumes and “to stroll” the grounds at Cobble Beach during the prestigious vintage car show, Concours d’Élégance, September 15, 2019. This year’s volunteer strollers, L to R, were: Peter Leonard, Judy Beth Armstrong, Jo-Ann Girdler and Ronn Cheney. Warm thanks to Laura Wood for coordinating OSLT’s participation, and to Susan Sankey for outfitting the “strollers” in their eye-catching finery.

The Drawer Boy - Then and Now

Quite a few members of OSLT went to Southampton in August to see the Bruce County Playhouse production of The Drawer Boy by Michael Healey. OSLT’s Kevin Haxell delivered a sensitive, touching performance in the role of Angus, who had been brain-damaged in World War 2 with life-altering consequences for himself and his best friend, Morgan.

For me, it brought back many memories of OSLT’s production of this fine play in February 2004, directed by Audrey Cheadle, which then went on to the WODL festival in Woodstock in March that year. Both Bill Murphy as Angus and Bud Jolley as Morgan, the farmer friend, were nominated as best actor with Bud receiving the award. Ben Cassidy as Miles, the visiting, aspiring actor/playwright, was nominated in the most promising new actor category; unfortunately, he was just three weeks too old for the best juvenile award. Jonathan Fair took the award for technical achievement.

OSLT’s production was also remarkable for the involvement of SIX teenagers. While other OSLT members like Michael Rea (lights), Peter Leonard (sound), Eileen More (producer), Ken Sobiski (set) were crucially involved in the initial production, the following young people virtually ran the show in Woodstock. They are: Ben Cassidy and Jonathan Fair as mentioned above; Caitlin O’Connor (now Ciaran Johnston) wardrobe; Tim Vigneux ASM; Emily Leonard, sound operator; Jill Welsh, hand props.

If you don’t know this play, don’t miss the opportunity to see it somewhere.
