The Prehistoric Hamburger?

The ingredients of a hamburger can be traced back into history, some

even to prehistoric times. Many ingredients have been combined to make

other foods. For instance, raised bread appears to have been first made

in ancient Egypt. Raised bread requires high concentrations of yeast added to flour dough. The technique was perfected in the ancient

Mediterranean and passed later to northern Europeans.

Ketchup, originally a Chinese word (ke-tsiap) meaning a fermented

fish or soy sauce, was broadly used in South-east Asia. The British found the sauce in Indonesia and tried to copy it when they returned home.

Early 18th-century ketchups were made of anchovies, walnuts and

mushrooms. Ketchup's main claim to fame was its longevity. It could

survive for months or years after bottling. British and American cooks experimented with a variety of ingredients, one of which was tomatoes.

Tomato ketchup did not become an important condiment in the United States until the late 19th century.

Mayonnaise is a combination of olive oil and egg that probably

originated in Roman times. The word 'mayonnaise' is derived from the French language in the mid-18th century. The French redeveloped the

condiment and introduced it into the United Kingdom and later to the

United States. Many different types of mayonnaise are produced today. Vinegar dates from prehistoric times in the Middle East. It is the

result of fermenting grapes and other fruits. Vinegar began as a by

product of ancient wine production. It was common throughout the

ancient Mediterranean world and was imported into the Americas by European colonists.

Mustard - a combination of mustard seeds with vinegar - was a

condiment used by the Romans, but it seems that it disappeared with the

fall of Rome. The French re-introduced the combination during the Middle Ages. Mustard was introduced shortly thereafter into the United Kingdom,

and was a product brought by English and French colonists when they

settled in the New World.

Ground beef has been consumed since prehistoric times in Europe. The word 'hamburger' was first used in Hamburg, Germany, in the 18th

century, to refer to a particular type of sausage. The combination of

hamburger with bread was a British creation. Several late-19th-century

claims locate the invention of the hamburger in America. Hamburgers

were supposedly served at the 1904 World's Fair in St Louis. They were

occasionally eaten at fairgrounds, amusement parks, carnivals and ballparks; hamburgers were also served at some diners, luncheonettes

and restaurants. Their major success dates back to the 1920s when fast

food establishments began selling inexpensive burgers. Fast-food chains

became even more important after World War 11.

Visual arts – food inspired Continuous line drawing p1

EXPLANATION

During the Portraiture Unpacked Virtual Excursion from Canberra last week you had a go at doing

a continuous line drawing of Nick Cave, a famous Australian singer, songwriter, writer, actor and

composer. A continuous line drawing is produced without ever lifting the pencil from the page.

This means that lines go back over the top of each other, so that the drawing is one free-flowing,

unbroken line.

MATERIALS

• A4 sheet of paper

• Lead pencil

• textas, marker pens, paint, crayons. (optional)

HINTS AND TIPS

✓ Draw slowly and think about where you are going to go with your drawing and how you

are going to get around the page with your drawing.

✓ Go from one major feature of what you are drawing to the next.

✓ If the drawing sections of what you are drawing doesn’t match up as you go, just adjust

your drawing.

✓ If the pencil comes off the paper, just go back to that point and keep going.

✓ It doesn’t matter how many lines are on the page as they all help to create the artwork.

✓ Don’t use an eraser. Extra lines are fine.

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Study the gallery of artworks below and decide on the subject you want to draw.

2. Find the objects at home to create a ‘Still Life Model’ to draw from. (It could be an

arrangement of food and food related items or just one object. Make sure there is enough detail

to make it an interesting subject to draw.)

3. Find a starting point at the edge of your still life and draw a line in from the edge of the

paper.

4. Begin outlining that section of your subject and continue drawing back and forward and

over existing lines that you have made while filling in detail until you have finished with that

section.

5. Move your pencil over the paper to the next section to be drawn and continue.

6. You can always draw back to a previous section to add extra detail or change the shape of

your drawing by adding extra lines.

7. Finish your drawing by drawing a line to the edge of your paper.

8. Use a limited number of textas, coloured pencils, crayons or paints to add some colour to

your artwork. (Keep your colour range basic and simple, as the lines are more important.)
