WelcomeWelcome to the Stafford Half Marathon, School and Family Fun Run and the Junior Mile, where this year sees the celebration of the Stafford Half Marathon’s 25th anniversary.

This handbook has been designed to guide you through the pre race nerves and to ensure that you know everything you need to know about the events, including how to get to the start line, health and safety information and the all important route maps. For all those wacky fun runners out there, don’t forget that fancy dress really makes for a colourful event, and on the spot prizes are dished out on the day for the craziest and best costumes!

We would like to thank all of our sponsors and supporters of the events - without them the day would not be possible. Finally, we wish you the best of luck and hope you have an enjoyable day.

Half MarathonStart Line InstructionsNOTE: The start of the Half Marathon is situated in Stafford Street, at the Junction with Princes Street [see map on page 11].

As there is an increase in entries for this year’s Half Marathon, we ask that you follow the instructions below to alleviate potential problems in the start area.

Also, please note that there is a change to the first part of the course and there will be NO town centre loop at the start.

The start area is narrow, and it will be helpful if you can line up in accordance with your anticipated finish time, to ensure minimal congestion.

If each runner adopts this sensible approach everyone will move away from the start more smoothly and everyone will be able to get into their running quickly and without incident to have an enjoyable run in the 2009 Stafford Half Marathon.

Take up a position behind the start line that is appropriate for your estimated finishing time. There will be estimated finish time markers displayed along the start area fencing.

Guide finish times from recent Half Marathons:

Winner to 1 hour 20 mins 3% of the finishers

Winner to 1 hour 30 mins 15% of the finishers

Winner to 1 hour 40 mins 35% of the finishers

Winner to 1 hour 50 mins 58% of the finishers

Winner to 2 hours 00 mins 75% of the finishers

Winner to 2 hours 10 mins 86% of the finishers

Winner to 2 hours 20 mins 94% of the finishers

To conform to this legal obligation all runners must be aware of the instructions within the following section of the handbook.

On race day, runners must comply with all instructions from police and stewards, and follow any temporary road traffic signs on the route.

For the Fun Run, if you are aged under 12 years, it is strongly recommended that you run with an adult supervisor, who will also be entered into the event.

For the Junior Mile, you must be able to complete the mile distance in a minimum of 8 minutes, as the Hand Cyclist and Half Marathon participants will need to get ready for their events.

Running on the Road Although roads have been closed

to ensure the safety of all runners, please be aware of the following points:

Keep to the left hand side of the road and do not stray away from the route, as you may wander outside of the road closure zone. Keep within the taped area. Follow all instructions from police and stewards.

First Aid St John Ambulance Brigade will be

on duty throughout the race. If you require first aid, you should approach either first aid personnel or one of the marshals on duty along the route. A first aid ambulance will be located in Gaolgate Street.

Stafford Area Action for Fairtrade [SAAFT], Stafford's local Fairtrade group, are helping you to "CHANGE TODAY AND CHOOSE FAIRTRADE". Supported by Midlands Co-operative Society and Stafford Borough Council's Sustainable and Healthy Communities team we are giving every runner a nutritious and delicious Co-op Fairtrade Banana at the 2009 Stafford Half Marathon and Fun Run.

On behalf of the event organisers, SAAFT and the Sustainable and Healthy Communities team would like to express their sincere thanks to Midlands Co-operative Society for their support.

Look out for the Big Banana and Team SAAFT running "TOWARDS A FAIRER WORLD".

Buying Fairtrade products helps to assist farmers in developing countries to have a brighter future as they will be paid a fair price for their goods and produce, which in turn means that communities can afford to invest in healthcare, education and more sustainable methods of production.
