We, the Hispanic Cultural Association (HCA) are proud to be celebrating Hispanic Heritage

Month from September 15th to October 15th. We were also excited and thrilled to have attended the

Fiesta in DC with The Center of Student Diversity on September 22nd.

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, we will be hosting information tables in Patriot to

educate the Mount St. Mary’s community about the depth of Hispanic culture. Each week will be

divided into different themes. The first week was an introduction into Hispanic culture. The second

week will be dedicated to Hispanic roots in music, which will include a Merengue and a 101 dance

class on September 24th from 8-9pm in the Seminary Dining Hall.

On September 28th from 1-4pm at Founders Plaza, we will be having a Heritage Festival that

will include music, food, activities, and much more. The third week (in October) will be devoted to

the Language within the Hispanic Community. Finally, the theme for the fourth week will be a

surprise...shhhh!

HCA meets every Wednesday at 6:45pm in AC 224. See you there!

BUSY SEMESTER!!!BUSY SEMESTER!!! A new semester is upon us and the Black Student Union has hit the ground

running! We would like to thank everyone who supported Showtime at the Apollo on

September 6th. Mount students and faculty were able to showcase their talents and we

had a great turn out. Shout out to Dr. Wolfe for winning first place and the Pan-Africa

Dancers for coming in second! Also we would like to thank all those who participated

in the Chick-Fil-A Fundraiser on September 11th. Hope you

enjoyed those sandwiches!!

The Black Student Union has many more events lined up for the fall semester. Keep an eye out for

our Book Drive in October. This is a great chance to donate all of your books and textbooks that you no

longer use as well as promote literacy around the world. Also, if you are interested in performing in our Lip

Sync competition in November, please e-mail us at [email protected].

Hope everyone’s semester is off to a great start! See you at our meetings every Thursday at 7:30pm in

AC225!

FALL EVENTS!!!FALL EVENTS!!!

Pan –Africa will have two main events this semester. We will bring

awareness to the Mount Community by beginning the semester with our

Annual Kick-Off event about! The event will include activities such as a game

show about the countries of Africa and a dance performance by the ladies of

Pan-Africa! Our goal is to get the Mount community engaged and to expose them to African Culture.

Our second event will be a panel discussion on education in various countries in Africa. Our guest

speakers will share their expertise on the impact of discrimination and conflict on the quality of education in

some African communities. This event is intended to inform and educate students and discuss ways of how to

provide equal opportunities for both male and female students to attain a higher level of education. Leading

up to this event Pan Africa will have activities such as bead sales and dance classes too! This is a fun way for

the Pan-Africa club to highlight the depth of African culture. Our intentions are to send the proceeds from the

bead sales to an organization in Africa that focuses on improving early childhood education for children.

Pan-Africa meets every Tuesday at 6pm in AC 230. We hope you’ll come and join us!

MPEs are a group of student leaders dedicated to facilitating conversations among the student body about

various issues of diversity. Students in this program undergo extensive training that prepares them to facilitate small

group discussions on issues such as racism, sexism, homophobia, classism and privilege. Sponsored by the Center for

Student Diversity (CSD), the MPE program is designed to educate and sensitize students to the diversity of the university

community. In order to educate our students about multiculturalism and increase an appreciation for diversity, the

program strives to establish presentation on social justice and diversity issues, such as stereotyping, discrimination,

ethnicity, cultural, racism, religious prejudice and sexism, able-ism and classism among all people rather than just

promoting one culture race or religion.

*Please contact the Center for Student Diversity at [email protected], if you are interested in

garnering support for diversity programs in your classroom or department.*

On August 28, 2013 citizens from across the country gathered upon our nation’s capital to commemorate and

celebrate the historic March On Washington which occurred 50 years ago on August 28, 1963. A group of 8 students

and 3 professional staff (including Dr. Timothy Wolfe!) traveled to Washington, D.C. to represent the Mount at this

landmark event! Despite spurts of inclement weather, attendees gathered on the National Mall to hear the inspirational

words of Jamie Foxx, Oprah Winfrey, Former President’s Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, and President Barack Obama

among many others!

Dr. King’s legacy calls for each of us to take a stand. In fact, it has only ever been the collective efforts of

ordinary individuals that have produced extraordinary outcomes in our society. Said Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

“Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable...Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering,

and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals.”
