What is INTERNET
• The Internet is a vast network that connects many independent networks spanning over 170 countries in the World.
• The one thing all these different computers have in common is the use of the Internet Protocol, which allows computers of different types to communicate with each other

• Further all these computers and server have the capacity to store a stupendous amount of data
• The internet provides a route through which all this data can be accessed by any computer with the Internet Protocol and a connection to the Internet

What is an internet search ?
• From the days of ARPANET, today, Internet has become huge unwieldy and certainly CHAOTIC
• One funny definition of internet is: It is a huge library with all the books lying on the floor without any covers and the chapter have all been separated- A CHAOS

• To make sense of the chaos of internet we have IP address which is the virtual route to a website.
• IP addresses in itself are not much of an help-as we may not be able to get the address of the required website itself. This problem is solved by conducting an internet search.

• An Internet search is done by using a search engine. A program that searches documents for specified keywords and returns a list of the documents where the keywords were found
• The documents that are returned can very easily be accessed by clicking on the hyperlink

How a search engine functions
a search engine works by sending out a spider to fetch as many documents as possible. Another program, called an indexer, then reads these documents and creates an index based on the words contained in each document. Each search engine uses a algorithm to create its indices such that, ideally, only meaningful results are returned for each query

•A program that automatically fetches Web pages. Spiders are used to feed pages to search engines. It's called a spider because it crawls over the Web. Another term for these programs is webcrawler.

•Because most Web pages contain links to other pages, a spider can start almost anywhere. As soon as it sees a link to another page, it goes off and fetches it.
•Large search engines, like Alta Vista, have many spiders working in parallel.

•The key to get good search results is the “key” word that one types
•Hence, one has to think not just about what one is searching for, but about the word or group of words that will feature prominently in the page that one is expecting to find on the Internet

•Google and other search engines are getting the world's information online by bringing books online. •In this by doing a Google Book Search one sees links to those books which are available online

• All these books are scanned copies. A limited preview of all the books which are there is available. Some books without copyright issues are available virtually for free
• And all the books featured have the links to the site of booksellers as well as the order form for those willing to buy it online

• The “Guttenberg Project” is committed to make available as much of the printed material as possible in the virtual world for free
• One can contribute books if one has a scanner and use all the books that are available for free
Looking for definitions
•To see a definition for a word or phrase, prefix "define" then a space, and then the word(s) you want to get defined. If the Search engine has seen a definition for the word or phrase on the Web, it will retrieve that information and display it in the search results
Looking for music
•Major search engines such as google have specialized services for music. One can select the option at the home page
•If you enter the name of an artist into the search box, it will display user reviews, song titles, and other useful information related to that artist in the search results.
